This ending had no right to hit this hard, this whole movie had no right to hit this hard Jonathan Larson's story isn't just his, it's everyone's. It's an inspiration to all those who are struggling, feeling worthless, burdened, afraid of running out of time, its an inspiration for them to keep at it because sooner or later you will make it, we are all surrounded by despair, by fear but we can still choose to be driven by love, love for our work, love for our friends and family and most importantly, love for ourselves. This one scene is just so well done, he doesn't have the success he's dreamed of, he does not have a second chance of bringing back the love of his life whom he himself drove away, his best friend is sick and has difficulty expressing his identity, many of his friends have died, he's 30 and time is running out for him but he still chooses to be driven by love, to do what he loves and its beautiful and what's better he's supported by the people he loves, people who have helped him hone his craft, his inspirations, his mentor, all of them and that final tune of Happy Birthday is so weirdly triumphant, it just works.

Why do we play with fire? Why do we run our finger through the flame? Why do we leave our hand on the stove- Although we know we're in for some pain? Oh, why do we refuse to hang a light When the streets are dangerous? Why does it take an accident Before the truth gets through to us? Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words. Why should we try to be our best When we can just get by and still gain? Why do we nod our heads Although we know The boss is wrong as rain? Why should we blaze a trail When the well worn path seems safe and So inviting? How-as we travel, can we See the dismay- And keep from fighting? Cages or wings Cages or wings Which do you prefer? Ask the birds Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words Louder than, louder than What does it take To wake up a generation? How can you make someone Take off and fly? If we don't wake up And shake up the nation We'll eat the dust of the world Wondering why Why Why do we stay with lovers Who we know, down deep Just aren't right? Why would we rather Put ourselves through hell Than sleep alone at night? Why do we follow leaders who never lead? Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution? If we're so free, tell me why? Someone tell me why So many people bleed? Cages or wings? Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer. Actions speak louder than Louder than, louder than Louder than, louder than Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds Fear or love baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than Louder than, louder than, ooh They speak louder Louder than, louder than, aah Actions speak louder than... Words
When Andrew Garfield sung the lyrics, "so many people bleed" he put his ENTIRE soul, body, mind, voice, and just his absolute everything into it. This will forever be my favorite Andrew Garfield movie because Andrew Garfield was just so f-ing amazing in it. He put his everything into this movie and that's why It turned out so great. Also, great job to everyone else because this movie was just so amazing and everyone put their absolute ALL into this masterpiece. The ENTIRE team was just so incredible and really worked HARD to make this movie the best it could be. And they accomplished just that. So really what I'm trying to say is thank you for allowing us to rest our eyes on this treasure and thank you for sharing Jonathan Larson's story. And thanks to Jonathan for getting up everyday and still writing even when you were told not to because people didn't believe in you. Thank you for creating beautiful pieces of artwork for people to hear and see.
Andrew Garfield literally made me cry for two hours with his performance and sealed the deal with this incredible song to destroy me emotionally I really hope he wins an oscar for his performance. This whole movie deserves recognition
This is a film that should really surely be the subject of the next Academy Award / Oscars ceremony. The energy and passion that has been put into this film is second to none. Garfield, Hudgens, Shipp and the rest of the cast absolutely raised the roof with this masterpiece of a movie.
I really wouldnt say that Andrew Garfield is an "overlooked teen star". He has two academy nominations and has been in some very big productions the last 10 years with high praise.
This song is so beautiful 😭 It's like he's asking "cages or wings which do you prefer?" And the logical answer might seem simple like who would prefer cages right? But the examples he gives throughout the song, "why do we refuse to hang the lights when the streets are dangerous?" "Why should we try to be our best? When we can just get by and still gain?" It seems like we always choose suffering that's why he says "actions speak louder than words" and i love the lyric "why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution?" Like why do we wait things to burn down and why don't we take the action before something horrible happens? And the whole "fear or love" thing 😭 it's like if we fear then we would do the logical things like we won't try to be our best cause we can just get by and gain but we don't do that, we choose love and thus our actions are not logical. Humans are driven by love not by fear.
the ending of this film makes me cry and sob every time. no matter how many times i watch this clip. it's just so beautiful, and honours jonathan larson in such a beautiful way.
"Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution if we're so 'free'? Tell me why? Someone tell me why so many people bleed!" Best lyrics in the song, sung with such ferver in this version, gets me right in the feels.
I've watched this movie only once, but find myself coming back to its music quite often. As soon as this one begins, as if on cue, my eyes and my heart become full. It's amazing to me how much power this song has on me.
This song is so well written and still so relevant today. It was written in the 90s and yet if you had told me it was written 2 years ago I would’ve believed you
That's a very touching and sad movie. I feel like Lin captured a beautiful moment in Jonathan's life: the one where he doggedly, obsessively chased his dreams. And we've all gone through this when we become adults. Sometimes life changes our course, but we've already had a time when we struggled so hard for our dreams that we felt unstoppable.
This song always gets me cry every time hearing it 🥲 The questions got me thinking. Thankyou Jonathan Larson for the amazing song and Thankyou Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, and Joshua Henry for delivering this song beuatifully 🖤 Thankyou Lin-Manuel Miranda for casting these talented actors… Andrew Garfield deserves an Oscar for this !!!

I think this song should be performed everywhere because this said a real message that everyone needs to hear. My school needs to hear this because it shows the truth about your actions.
I’ll never tire of the looks of pride on the faces of both Ira and Rosa about halfway through - two of his biggest and most influential supporters when not many others would go near him with a barge pole seeing the fruits of their belief in full flow. This movie is damned beautiful.
I don’t know if anyone who worked on this movie will ever see this, but I just want the creators to know how much their work here means to me. I can’t think of another movie in the past ten years or more that has affected me so deeply. I’m a 28-year-old disabled writer, and I connect to Jonathan Larson's story on a visceral level. The desire to create regularly takes precedence over other things in my life, as does the notion that I may be running out of time. I especially love that moment in the Therapy scene when Jonathan starts writing a song in his head, right in the middle of trying to make up with Susan. It’s such a poignant moment that speaks to the obsessive nature of artists everywhere. Also, because I have a progressive disability, I've lost friends in my community too soon, and I worry every time one ends up in a hospital. Seeing Jonathan lose friends during the AIDS epidemic hit me on another note. This movie is absolutely beautiful from start to finish, and it continually provides me with hope, empathy, and a reflection of my own story every time I watch it. And of course, I listen to the soundtrack religiously. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for putting this out in the world, and thank you Jonathan Larson for your spirit and artistic ingenuity.
"Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution if we're so free? Tell me why - someone tell me why so many people bleed?" hits home in a polarized USA today.

This song has really given me hope as I navigate my 20s trying to figure out who I am and what I should do with my life when everything about being an adult feels so hard. Thank you Jonathan Larson for giving hope to so many people!
When I watched this the first 3 times, the piano happy birthday at the end was the icing on the cake to make me tear up. What an amazing movie
What I loved in that scene was the shot of Jonathan looking tearfully at the audience. It’s just bittersweet to me
Omg. This is me 😭💖
This song has me in a chokehold right now. So magical, it makes you think these thoughts that need to be thought about more, and when Happy Birthday starts playing at the end I will always start to cry. It's so brilliant, Jonathan was ahead of his time
The more you listen to this song clip, the more you love the people's reactions at that moment. Micheal, his parents, his colleagues from the restaurants, the lady from the survey (don't remember well), his agent, Susan, all of their reactions to this Jonathan's Tick tick boom musical were the BEST of the bests. They were so amazed and so proud of Jonathan Larson. And Jonathan was also so happy to see all of them enjoying his music. This song gonna be my FAVOURITE of all time.
BTW, even Julie Larson, Jonathan Larson’s actual sister, is in the audience
This and 30/90 are my favorite songs from Tick Tick... Boom. Andrew Garfield is an insanely talented actor and singer. I hope he gets an Oscar or at least nominated.
Why do we play with fire?
Why do we run our finger
through the flame?
Why do we leave our hand on the stove-
Although we know we're in for some pain?
Oh, why do we refuse to hang a light
When the streets are dangerous?
Why does it take an accident
Before the truth gets through to us?
Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds.
Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer
Actions speak louder than words.
Why should we try to be our best
When we can just get by and still gain?
Why do we nod our heads
Although we know
The boss is wrong as rain?
Why should we blaze a trail
When the well worn path seems safe and
So inviting?
How-as we travel, can we
See the dismay-
And keep from fighting?
Cages or wings
Cages or wings
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds
Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer
Actions speak louder than words
Louder than, louder than
What does it take
To wake up a generation?
How can you make someone
Take off and fly?
If we don't wake up
And shake up the nation
We'll eat the dust of the world
Wondering why
Why
Why do we stay with lovers
Who we know, down deep
Just aren't right?
Why would we rather
Put ourselves through hell
Than sleep alone at night?
Why do we follow leaders who never lead?
Why does it take catastrophe
to start a revolution?
If we're so free, tell me why?
Someone tell me why
So many people bleed?
Cages or wings?
Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds.
Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer.
Actions speak louder than
Louder than, louder than
Louder than, louder than
Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds
Fear or love baby?
Don't say the answer
Actions speak louder than
Louder than, louder than, ooh
They speak louder
Louder than, louder than, aah
Actions speak louder than...
Words
Thanks
I hope we get to see Andrew Garfield in future musicals cuz he’s really opened himself up to this genre.
And he never sang before filming this movie... Mind. Blown.
whomever liked my post, I like your Like ;)
Keep liking things :)
1:33 I love the addition of the side character in the final scene who loved their performance so much.
Me too
Andrew Garfield literally made me cry for two hours with his performance and sealed the deal with this incredible song to destroy me emotionally
I really hope he wins an oscar for his performance.
I’m so here for Andrew Garfield and Vanessa Hudgens’ journey from overlooked teen stars to solid musical theatre performers. 👏🏻
I really wouldnt say that Andrew Garfield is an "overlooked teen star". He has two academy nominations and has been in some very big productions the last 10 years with high praise.
It's so impressive that he is British and can even sing in an American accent
@@cam52391 he’s also American
Love your interpretation ❤️❤️
@@indahdwips thank you 😊❤
This is Amazing! Thank you for this comment! 🥺❤
@@amandacorreia22 aww you're so sweet thank you🥺❤
The way described it makes it the most precious comment here 💖
the ending of this film makes me cry and sob every time. no matter how many times i watch this clip. it's just so beautiful, and honours jonathan larson in such a beautiful way.
Love this movie and love this song. Bravo to the genius Jonathan Larson and Andrew Garfield for playing him so beautifully.
If he does not win an award for his performance in this movie, this will be a crime against humanity.
Andrew Garfield was robbed at the Oscars. This is a stunning performance.
I just rewatched the movie today. Andrew deserves an Oscar!!! He's just PERFECT here!!!
Hes nominated but in the movie hacksaw ridge
This song always gets me cry every time hearing it 🥲 The questions got me thinking.
Thankyou Jonathan Larson for the amazing song and Thankyou Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, and Joshua Henry for delivering this song beuatifully 🖤
Thankyou Lin-Manuel Miranda for casting these talented actors…
Andrew Garfield deserves an Oscar for this !!!
This song brought me to tears yesterday when I watched the film. I do not like musicals that much, and the fact that this made me cry, shows how good it is, and how great Andrew Garfield's performance is
I swear in god’s name that if Andrew doesn’t win the Oscar to best actor for this magnificent work, i will hate Hollywood the rest of my days
I second this!! I haven’t been this passionate about a potential nomination since rami malek in bohemian rhapsody!
Ehh as of now he is in like 3rd
Took decaprio ages to get recognition with a Oscar so hopefully not as long for Andrew
@@videogameguy1988 ehhh technically no he didn't. Leo, while a phenomenal actor, did not deserve a win until 2014 with the revenant. Every nomination he lost is because someone else gave a once in a lifetime type performance.
It'll either be him or Will Smith. Javier Bardem (Sp?) could be the dark horse winner though.

Andrew is a complete package of talent ✨⚡
and hero
He’s the best actor
Please add a gentleman if you have seen him around women. Always respectful.
this song is a balm for the soul on this awful morning.
Andrew Garfield deserves the Oscar for his performance in this movie. He has shown his acting skills not just with a single type of movie. Its from musical, action, adventure, war, and drama. I get chills every single time I listen to this song.
im not a theater kid and growing up not knowing this kind of magic can happen in a room performed by several people. but damn i wish i was because of this movie. not only andrew aced this but the entire cast and crew did such great job capturing everything and trying to tell the story as truthfully as possible. andrew gave his all to this project, lin really knew the materials he was given, and the cast!!! i cannot tell you how much i want the superbia songs to have official recording and being released because i couldn't get enough of it!! i will surely be jamming to the album for at least the next month (i didn't stop listening to hamilton for about 3 months straight, and in the heights for like 2 months, so yes)
Andrew Garfield can literally do anything - act, dance, and sing. I find him very smart too. It’s time we give him the flowers he much so deserves!
I'm obsessed with the way he sings "birrdssss"
ikr! it’s so soothing that it gives me goosebumps every time!
The crescendo up to his final delivery of "actions speak LOUDER!" at 4:03 is my most replayed moment on all of TH-cam. It's such a triumphant delivery and way to wrap up a brilliant film.
3:10 -3:16
GOD, im in love w this lyric and how incredible is andrew/vanessa voices 😫💘💞💖💖
Harmony is on point
This film was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I was sobbing by the end it was so moving and Andrew Garfield's performance is mind blowing. Give them ALL THE AWARDS!
Can we jsut take the time to appreciate that Andrew Garfield can not only sing but is bloody beautiful! Like there are some actors who are like yeah... they got an alright singing voice but then you got actors like Andrew Garfield and Hugh Jackman who can act so freaking well and then they can sing like angels!
Zac Efron
@@pauljohn.zac23 yeah he's amazing too but we already knew he could sing Andrew was an unknown when it came to signing and he absolutely blew it out of the water!
Vanessa Hudgens is criminally underrated. What a beauty and voice 😍🥰❤
Finally I no longer need to open the film on Netflix to listen to the video-version of the song. Thank you!
I lost it when they showed the photo of Rent 😭 This movie is absolutely brilliant and so is Andrew Garfield's performance.
Man, I love this song and how Andrew did justice to the role given to him. Here's hoping to see Andrew again on the big screen on 16th 😉
We all did 🔥
In my opinion, tick, tick... BOOM! is undoubtedly one of the best musicals ever, and is a chef’s kiss to Musical Theater. Thank you Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrew Garfeild, the amazing cast, and most of all, Jonathan Larson.
I love how throughout the movie the audience isn’t shown but the final song makes beautiful cinematic choices and cuts to all of the key characters at the perfect time
“Make a wish”
The way this movie ends is just WOW, chills each time
I love this song and I love how Andrew portrayed Jonathan Larson
This man deserves the best
I think this song should be performed everywhere because this said a real message that everyone needs to hear. My school needs to hear this because it shows the truth about your actions.
One of my favorite films of the year! Andrew deserves an Oscar for this film.
what an outstanding performance by andrew garfield, he’s perfect for every role that he played. i love him very much
I’ll never tire of the looks of pride on the faces of both Ira and Rosa about halfway through - two of his biggest and most influential supporters when not many others would go near him with a barge pole seeing the fruits of their belief in full flow. This movie is damned beautiful.
the lyrics to this song, larson's powerful words with andrew's beautiful voice. brings me to tears every time.
I will forever be upset that 1. Andrew didn’t get his well deserved Oscar for this. 2. We didn’t get a live performance of this song at the Oscars
Thank you, Garfield, Hudgens, and Henry, for giving this song the justice! It sounds a like from the original which how it's supposed to be.
This movie made me cry for an hour. The acting was brilliant, and Jonathan Larson was a truly incredible songwriter
The transition from "He still had so many questions" to this song was heartbreaking
Andrew is insanely amazing. He can act, sing, perform some stunts, etc. I’m amazed
hearing Andrew sing in this film just made my heart melt
I mean... Ive never *not* liked Andrew Garfield, gut he's really having a moment this past month... This was a fantastic role for him.
Vanessa Hudgens is really amazing in this movie 🔥
One of the movies, that definitely made me the person I am. Everytime I feel lost, I come back to this song to remember.
"Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution if we're so free? Tell me why - someone tell me why so many people bleed?"
hits home in a polarized USA today.
My goodness this put me in tears..very much like Seasons of Love! Song of Our Generation
They should include that happy birthday song at the end that I ended up sobbing, I can't even stop my tears. Thanks for this movie and Jonathan Larson..I remember how I used to believe in myself regardless of what others say
Tearing up at the tenderness of the voice and lyrics again
A movie has not made me this emotional in years. Watched it last night and Andrew Garfield is an absolute genius.
man after listening to the original I appreciate the cast of the movie even more. Especially Vanessa Hudgens sounds EXACTLY like the original cast recordings it's amazing
The movie was amazing...like him...like his performance...he really deserve an oscar...this last scene..song..lyrics..especially the last words : make a wish.....made me cry....i don't know why, maybe because of sadness or happiness, about past or future....I would say it's a mix between these four.
this is my favorite movie ever…. this song gives me chills every time. I don’t know what I want to do with my life, but I know I want to do acting or music. This is Andrew’s best acting performance ever imo
Jonathan really was ahead of his time. This song is so applicable to today.
Omg - don’t do musicals but got stuck in this …. Fabulous - surely an Oscar for Andrew !!!!
Joshua Henry! Incredible Broadway actor. The Broadway actors and creators in this are astonishing.
The way he hits the "birds" note every time!! Me dying
Seeing Julie Larson in the audience? The OG cast of RENT? The Sondheim voicemail? I don't think I've ever cried so hard in my life. Jonathan Larson was a visionary and this is SO powerful. Lin-Manuel could not have created a more beautiful homage to Jonathan. Andrew Garfield should get an Oscar nom.
Literally how was this not nominated for Best Picture
And how did Will Smith win an Oscar instead of Andrew Garfield
Just give this guy an OSCAR !!!!!
Andrew deserved an Oscar for this film. His performance is incredible 😭
Damn, Josh and Vanessa killed it vocally. So much feel and potency in their vocals.
I absolutely loved this movie, this has literally become up there as one of my favorite movies of all time
I want them to perform this song at the Oscar. Andrew is an amazing actor and singer. Can't wai't to see him in a Brodway musical. I miss Jonathan. I wish he was here to see the influence he has on people all other the world. It was a great movie. Thank you Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Sadly that’s reserved for original songs and this is not an original song.
This is right up there with Seasons of Love!
