Sharks & Spearfishing - the time Josh nearly lost a hand.

  • People always ask me about sharks and spearfishing so here are a few times when I have encountered them on my adventures. They are generally not too much of a problem but sometimes they can get out of hand.
    Also for good measure some wahoo, Spanish mackerel, dogtooth tuna & fingermark getting speared. The sharks in this video are mostly bull sharks and bronze whalers.

      Look at it this way...... if u stand ur ground there is a chance it might fear that ur bigger than it. Which means it could deter the attack. However if ur cry like a bitch and run then ur telling him that he is bigger and that u are prey. And last time i checked only michael phelps can outswim a shark

      I meant to ask you - were they Sei, Brydes whales or Minkes ? They are not very big for baleen whales, so I'm guessing were probably something a little bit special.

    Got scolded by a lifeguard at Daytona Beach, Florida when I was swimming in the ocean about 400 to 500 yards out. He was blowing his whistle, waving red flags, etc. I thought there was someone in distress and why wasn't he going to help them. When I ultimately came back in to shore he yelled at me telling me "There are sharks out there." I yelled back, "No Shit. It's the Ocean."

    The joys of spearfishing I guess... had a ragged tooth shark/grey nurse shark giving me horns like the zambi gave you but with me the raggie came straight to me on the bottom and followed me all the way up to the surface and tried to have a couple bites and pushed the shark off 3 times just before I got on the boat..
    In South Africa we tend to have alot of shark action especially from the black tip shark and the bull shark/zambi but only on surten area's such as protea bank's and aliwal shoal when the fish are cooking.. yet we risk it🙈🙈
    Keep the good video's up... definitely a fan of your channel👍

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Renier. The grey nurse sharks are far from timid labradors like the scuba divers would have you believe. I should put up a video where a good mate of mine was charged at 32m by one!

    • @renierkruger2640
      @renierkruger2640 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel that would definitely be cool to see especially for the people that hasn't experienced something like that👌 the grey nurse shark is tame here as well but the moment we go to hole in the wall in the transkei they become more agro and aggressive

    • @TrailerYacht
      @TrailerYacht 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *PLEASE* do - nobody believes me ! A few of my mates have had "interesting" moments with "placid" Grey nurses wanting their kings while spearing on the Twelve mile reef off Tweed heads. I'll never forget how "placid" GNS's are from my own experiences chasing longtails & cobia on the NSW north coast.

I live in the States not near the ocean, and thinking about relocating soon. My question is, how often do you go spearfishing, or just snorkel/dive in general? Is it your job, or do you just do it every once in awhile?

    My first salt water trip was last week. Dropped on a jack in 15 meters of water. A 3 meter bull shark was after the same fish and swam right under my gun. No worries he called he can have it. I never even saw it, my cover diver though I was going to hold his fin for a ride.

  • @dougcole7677
    @dougcole7677 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was in the Bahamas pole spearing last week with my son. We saw sharks all day, every day, mostly Reef Sharks, but bulls too. One afternoon we had two reefs hanging around, one about 4 feet and one about 6. I went down, missed a fish, and on the way back up the small one charged me and banged his nose right into my mask. I literally pushed him away with my hands. It wasn't a big shark but it still shook me up pretty badly. That's been our closest encounter yet, and too close for me.
    I think we shot too many fish in that area. After that we started only shooting one or two fish per head then moving on.

    We tend to get the curious tiger mostly, either they are big females that glide in and glide out, or they are young and dumb and hang around trying to snake your fish constantly. Annoying buggers. Bulls/Whalers are just ever present, depending on where we are diving on the west coast. North mostly bulls, mid and south are mostly whalers.

    Hey Daniel I've got a question! it doesn't really pertain to this vid but i thought i'd ask on the most recent one. So i going spearing for the first time next weekend. should i use a reel on my gun or not? kinda confused about it. I've got a 90 cm Mako predator 3rd gen. i dont quite have a targeted species as is this is my first time and my brother and I are going alone. (it's both our first times) Safety wise we are trying to take all the precautions. we've been diving springs at 40 ft(really want to go deeper but all the springs that are deeper are browned out from a nearby river) and can do that quite comfortably with a bottom time of 40-60 seconds maybe longer. anyways i'm just trying to give a bunch of info so you can answer me the best way possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Dan , thanks for the recommendation on the last video picked up all the gear when i was in Torquey may need another weight for the belt and a new gun but i am at least 90% there , found it hard to breath through the new snorkel so much so that the following days i could not go again as my chest hurt from the exertion, will get a better mask and snorkel before i try it again . mentioned your name !! cheers sir.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow sounds like you were breathing really hard. I have had a sore chest sometimes after diving really hard in a competition but nothing that wasn’t just over exhortation. I think I did 120 dives in a 6hr comp. It does take some getting used to with a snorkel and I use a Riffe stable snorkel as I very rare get water in it. Expensive and a tad bulky but it works for me!

    I’d have been scared shitless, man. Bull shark is one of the last creatures I want to run into. Only type that would scare me more is a big tiger or great white... ✌🏼

      Hey Nikola, the other sharks were bronze whalers mostly. Never ran into a white but seen a few tigers before.
      I think the whales were Minke but not 100%. Some sort of finned whale anyway.

    What kind of speargun do you recommend for a beginner, snorkeling and diving in Scandinavia (Denmark)? :)

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Pi, when I dived Denmark I only used a small 80cm gun and shot quite a few fish. The flatties are very easy to spear and in some cases pickup by hand. I made a video about when I was in Copenhagen spearing. th-cam.com/video/of0hfAadGjE/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Daniel, great video, I like the educational through experiences aspect of it. I want to spearfish so hard, I'm going to buy my first speargun. I'll be spearfishing in the Mediterranean Sea, between 0 & 5 meters. The water is really clear, and I don't know if I should go with a 75 or a 90. I'm scared I'd struggle loading the 90 etc... Could you give me some advise ? Thanks :)
    Greetings from France.

      Hey Enzo, congrats on the World Cup firstly ⚽️. You will most likely be fishing in holes at that depth to find fish so perhaps a 75 would be okay. But I do recall in Menton I was snorkelling and saw a few nice species in 3m of water so the 90 would be my choice.
      You should have no trouble loading a 90. It’s all in the technique.

    Sharks are why I’m always scanning but it still scares the shit out of me. My biggest fear are not the ones I can see but the ones I don’t see. Example: snorkeling in the Bahamas on this ship wreck. I’m the first person in this group to dive down close to it, I look around a bit and then turn face up and wave at people. When I get to the surface everyone was like you weren’t even afraid of that shark!?!?! I’m like....what shark? That giant one right behind you. Thought they were joking but ya apparently had some “big” shark or something right behind me

    Could you help me out I got an auto immune disorder I just got back from the sea of Cortez Mexico and this time I couldn't get my 110 bands all the way back I kept hanging up on the mono crimp and I'm not strong enough to now to work it over that so frustrating any idea on how to change the mono set up or may be I'm pulling rong if you have any ideas thanks for all the great work and the video are amazing

      You could try longer bands if you’re struggling to load the gun. Also when loading make sure you have your knuckles facing the sky and palms down. It uses more of the back muscles which are a larger group of muscles than the arms when going palms up.

    Sharks are really curious in nature
    So as long as you do not start spazzing out like you mostly did in these clips they don't attack you xD
    They just come by have a lil pet and then just leave.
