  • Tomorrow (February 6, 2023) marks the 47th anniversary of Vince Guaraldi's passing at the age of 47. Here is my very brief rendition of his "Cast Your Fate To The Wind".
Guaraldi is buried just a few miles from my home. I recently visited his grave site for the first time. He is buried with his mother in a modest plot in a very large Catholic cemetery with many far grander memorials, many for very famous people like Joe DiMaggio.
Since just after Thanksgiving, I've been on quite the Guaraldi binge. I've been listening a lot, of course. I also read a Ph.D. thesis about Guaraldi's style by Alec Huntley and watched the thesis lecture-recital on TH-cam: • The Guaraldi Sound - A... .
I also read the most comprehensive and authoritative biography of Guaraldi available, Vince Guaraldi at the Piano by Derrick Bang. Bang also provides an amazing amount of Guaraldi information online: fivecentsplease.org/dpb/guaral....
In this video, you can see me using the heel of my left hand to play notes, as Guaraldi did on this tune. There is a surprising scarcity of video footage of Guaraldi performing, and almost none of him performing this, his signature tune before Peanuts soundtrack music solidified his legacy. I'm aware of only one instance of video of Guaraldi performing this song: • Vince Guaraldi . It's from an unaired 1960s television special called Anatomy of a Hit. (That TH-cam video is an excerpt from the show. I would love to see the whole thing.) The video shows Guaraldi experimenting with the song at his home in Daly City. You can clearly see him playing the notes with the heel of his left hand. So I was surprised to see David Benoit say that Guaraldi played the notes with his fist: • Vince Guaraldi - Cast... . When Benoit says he saw video of Guaraldi playing the song, he is almost certainly referring to Anatomy of a Hit. I don't know why he says it was played with a fist.
If you happen to be into Homestar Runner and Vince Guaraldi, you can listen to Volume 1 (palacefamilysteakhouse.bandca...) and Volume 2 (palacefamilysteakhouse.bandca...) of my recordings of various Homestar Runner themes. Most (but not quite all) of them are performed in the style of Guaraldi and are often an homage to something specific on the A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. The downloads are free, or really "pay what you want" but put $0 if you just want to download them. They come with the implicit blessing of Strong Bad himself in the form of a few tweets telling people about them like / 1605960282978881536 .
But enough tacky self-promotion from me. Go listen to a lot of Vince Guaraldi. There's a whole official music channel for Vince here on TH-cam: @VinceGuaraldiMusic

Here from "Treat Street", Just want to say that I really appreciate all the "Vince" stuff, He is one of my favorite artists, and is in my opinion (outside the Christmas special), A largely underrated artist.
