He was a far better guitar player than he gets credit for because his animated persona overshadowed everything else. Dude was incredible in all facets of creating music.
In a interview with Eric Clapton many years ago he was asked who was the best guitar player he had ever seen...his replied without hesitation "Prince".

What's crazy about Prince is everyone knows he plays guitar, but he can't justifiably be categorized as a guitar player. Hearing him play without a band, on an acoustic, there's no denying his acumen, and adroitness is on par with top tier guitarists. Unequivocally, the man was an exceptional guitar player, it's just his chops were that tight on several instruments. His understanding of each was based on their respective foundations, and specialized techniques. So if he's on keys, he's not a guitar player on keys, he's the flippin'' piano man. And still, this falls short of describing his musicianship, because he was also able to compose unique parts for each of these instruments, from their unique perspectives, all at the same time, which made him a beast in the studio. When he'd take it on the road, he was also able to lead other musicians to hit all his subtle nuances on their instruments while he's playing guitar. He wasn't just a prodigy, he was a prodigy among prodigies. Obviously, this video got me thinking. I don't think I've ever heard Prince playing solo on acoustic before. This kind of hit me like hearing Hendrix play Hear My Train a Comin' on a 12 string for the first time. I'm glad TH-cam pushed the post.

I was lucky enough to see Prince twice. First time was at Wembley stadium, then some time later at Wembley arena on his “Gold Tour”. The much smaller Wembley arena gig (1995) was my favourite of the two. When he sang “Gold” at the end of the concert, a huge cloud of gold ticker tape rained down on the audience from above. It was a night out that I’ll never forget. Amazing performance.

As a musician ,producer, performer........the man was exceptional in every single way. As a person in his own right......I'm only guessing but he had real issues that we never seen. The sad fact is we lost someone who had more talent than most of his generation ever did have.

Although I've been a fan of his for a long long time, I had never heard him play acoustic guitar until just now. Humbled. Blown away 🤯. Deeply, sincerely, impressed. It makes you wonder how he ever found time to get as good as he is on that single instrument considering everything else that he had going on with writing and arranging and performing and going over every mind you detail of his career as he built himself into the superstar that he became. He has the guitar chops of someone who has been in the woodshed with a guitar and nothing else for his entire life! Peerless.
I’m so glad I got to see the Piano and Microphone Tour in Melbourne just before he passed. What a genius and lovely man he was. He had the crowd mesmerised and laughing at his humble humour 🥰❤️

You never fully realise how super talented these artists are until they leave us ! I remember seeing Prince in London the night the England football team were playing, I was upset my then girlfriend dragged me along. A quarter way through his set I realised I was watching a true genius at work and football didn’t seem to matter that night ! What a tragic loss left us far to early……..
He was one of the best guitarists- there were not very many popular guitarists better for me Prince was top ten guitarist and he did everything else aswell
As a kid I heard my dad listen to Prince from time to time and I knew he was a guitar player. When I started to gravitate towards bass my dad said check out Prince and that was when I realized he was a true musician he really was a master of all instruments and music
He had his share of good riffs, but he was a star because of his great talent as an entertainer. I’ve not been a pop music fan, but definitely like his music. RIP.
Charisma, humility, incredible talent.......terrible that he is gone. Purple Rain is in my five greatest albums of all time.. RIP little man, you'll never be forgotten..
Heavy rainfall almost caused a Prince (’89) concert I visited in to be rescheduled, but then he suddenly emerged from a cloud of smoke, shouting; “please lord, stop this rain” after which he got into the just released Sign of the Times. Candy Dulfer (who would later work with him) and her father Hans (who I did a jamsession with) were dancing in front of me. Unforgettable. A famous Dutch artist (Herman Brood) said he was so impressed by the concert that he left after about half an hour, because otherwise he would never dared to enter a stage anymore.
Prince was an all around great musician. It wasn't just his singing it was his persona. He was an incredible musician and there will never be another. He played all the instruments on his first album and was not just good at it he was great. generational talent he was and they just don't exist anymore.
I don’t think there will never be a Prince biopic. It would be impossible to cast anyone to credibly play him. He was truly one of a kind! Rest in peace.
Best musician ever? There have been some awesome guitar shredders in this world, but it's hard to find a better one than him. Musical mastermind at over 20 instruments as well? Played a hell of a basketball game too? Truly....
I never really cared much about Prince and thought of him as just another 80s star, until I worked for him as a stage hand in 2000. I've met many artists, from Paul McCartney over Beyonce (well, Destiny's Child then) to Michael Jackson, but no-one impressed me like Prince. He blew me away. It was Jimi Hendrix reincarnate. I'm a fan ever since.
In 1984 I saw the Purple Rain Tour 17th row main floor at the Rosemont Horizon in suburban Chicago. Sheila E was the back up band. I have seen a lot of great concerts in my life and that one has to be in the top 5. What a major musical talent with the persona to match. The best way to describe how the chicks in the audience were swooning for him was that it reminded me of the earliest videos of the Beatles with all of the teen age girls screaming and fainting LOL! Only at the Prince concert they weren't fainting they were lusting!

Born in '64. Late Boomer. Always liked Prince but not what one would consider a fan(atic). Then, I met the love of my life in '92. She is a fan(atic). And she shared her love of Prince with me. And I could not help but respect and admire the musicality of the man. I mean, damn, he could pick up a trombone, having never played, nor touched, a trombone, and show the trombonist he was paying, how to play the damn piece. Dude was a phenomenon.
What a legend. Great to hear this man on acoustic!
oh my god i miss him so bad. I never got to meet him. It was a life's dream, and he was such an amazing person, performer, musician, ...he was a deity on earth. I love him and will always cherish his memory
1985 at the beach bars in SoCal. 🤘. Every band was covering Prince and 1999!!! We closed the bars Friday and Saturday nights. Prince was so talented and left his mark. 🤓🤘🥳. He was flamboyant, yet humble. Even his passing was Prince being humble not wanting people to fret about him… R.I.P.
...this was on of my my first singles i bought in my life- it was fckd and scratched- only piece in the shop- nobody bought it -except me- i took it home and played on my fathers stereo - loved it and still do- still sad bout his early passin...
I was lucky enough to see Prince twice. First time was at Wembley stadium, then some time later at Wembley arena on his “Gold Tour”.
The much smaller Wembley arena gig (1995)
was my favourite of the two. When he sang “Gold” at the end of the concert, a huge cloud of gold ticker tape rained down on the audience from above. It was a night out that I’ll never forget. Amazing performance.
Miss him so much and can’t forgive myself for not seeing him performing live . Godspeed giant
Seen him twice, he was great.
One of my biggest regrets too!!!!
I literally had tickets in the "cart" for the last show he played in Atlanta. Said to myself, I can't afford it right now, next time....
Yes❤ only when we look back we regret it
Ooh you really should have here is where I’m lucky to see Prince live gigs, concerts, jams, phenomenal absolutely magnificent, one word Electrifying 💜🕊️
God Bless Prince
Rest in Paradise xxxx
That dude never ceases to amaze me!
A master musician, one of the best of all time.
Out of the world. I never saw such a style of playing guitar before!! Hats off to you two
What an Amazing musician....
As a musician ,producer, performer........the man was exceptional in every single way.
As a person in his own right......I'm only guessing but he had real issues that we never seen.
The sad fact is we lost someone who had more talent than most of his generation ever did have.
Not only could he read and write real well but, he could play the guitar just like a bat outta hell.
That's just stupid. Bats can't play guitars. 🤭
@@drinkinslim The reference is Chuck Berry - Johnny Be Good.
@@pauljordan4452 I think you confused Chuck Berry with Meat Loaf. :) Johnny B Goode's lines are: Who never ever learned to read or write so well.
But he could play a guitar just like a-ringin' a bell. So go. Go, Paul Jodan. Go. ;)
@@drinkinslim Get out. You don't talk that way to someone mentally ill. Is that my mistake?
Promised myself.. to see Prince live..no matter what the cost…dam shame we’ve lost his spirit and talents forever…life ain’t fair..❤️🩹
What a talent he was! So inspirational
Peerless.
It’s so sad that the guy who was with the people who found Prince dead in the elevator who has a Suboxone got there a day too late
@@stevescontriano860 just mind blowingly horrific and tragic to this very day. A huge loss…
I loved Prince and the Revolution, kick ass music but Prince is not a good acoustic guitar player, get real.
He's Such a Comedian and Serious with playing the Guitar Love it😍🎸💜
Uno de los pocos reyes de la música!!!! Creador y virtuoso como pocos!! Genios que vienen a marcar épocas y tendencias!!!❤
I’m so glad I got to see the Piano and Microphone Tour in Melbourne just before he passed. What a genius and lovely man he was. He had the crowd mesmerised and laughing at his humble humour 🥰❤️
Every time I see him on guitar I always say the same thing. He could have been as good as Hendrix if he would have just focused on the Guitar. Incredible human being he was. Miss him so much and his CD's are in heavy rotation in my CD player always, Thanks for sharing this Gem and I do mean that term quite litterally. Enjoy your day and thanks for reading my post. It means the world to me.
I think he was just as good as Jimmy if not better. And perhaps Jimmy could have been better if he wasn't focused on heroin. Check out Prince playing at his hall of fame induction. May change your mind. Take care.
He could play bass too
I love you because I loved PRINCE HIS MUSIC BROUGHT ME THROUGH MY ADOLESCENT AND TEEN YEARS THEN TO BECOMING A MAN AND NOW A OLDER MAN AND ITS STILL WRITING THE PAGES OF LIFE.😇😇😇😇😇😇🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿💯💯💯💯💯😭😭😭😭😇👑🥺🥺🥺😌😌😌
@@majorerskineCH47played bass better than guitar.
Prince is a GUITAR GOD in his own right. His playing is masterful and impeccable.
Not enough people know what a great guitarist he was, such a musical talent.
He's a very good guitarist, at best!
Not sure about underrated!
Overrated.......
Incredible musician. Plays numerous instruments and that guitar playing is as good as it gets
Absolutely genius! His guitar playing is stellar!🌟✨✨🌟
Holy crap I miss that man. I saw Purple Rain very young and asked for a guitar. Thanks man. 🎸
Such a musical talent, rest in peace
Heavy rainfall almost caused a Prince (’89) concert I visited in to be rescheduled, but then he suddenly emerged from a cloud of smoke, shouting; “please lord, stop this rain” after which he got into the just released Sign of the Times. Candy Dulfer (who would later work with him) and her father Hans (who I did a jamsession with) were dancing in front of me. Unforgettable. A famous Dutch artist (Herman Brood) said he was so impressed by the concert that he left after about half an hour, because otherwise he would never dared to enter a stage anymore.
His talent was impeccable! Everything he did was perfectly performed. What a loss 🙏
What an amazing spirit. Sure miss him and his gifts for us
nothing compares to prince ,especially these days.he was a fantastic singer and musician.
RIP prince, the greatest musician in our generation.
Wonderful stuff best wishes to your family
I'm not a big Prince fan, but he is in fact one of the greatest talents of music that ever came around. RIP
Saw Prince in Toronto on the Musicology tour.. he did that awesome medley of the classics on acoustic. What a show.
Amazing stuff ! What a talent that guy was. Thanks for uploading. ❤
Soooo talented..crazy talent from this small dude!!
He was a once in a lifetime kind of talent!! Gone too soon 🥺😞
Nvr got the Prince Michael Jackson colab tho
Best musician ever? There have been some awesome guitar shredders in this world, but it's hard to find a better one than him. Musical mastermind at over 20 instruments as well? Played a hell of a basketball game too? Truly....
He was also a monster on the ping pong table, I hear.
Always wished he wouldve done a heavy guitar rock album. He was so good.
he has some and shreds! it was never released by labels but he released it
Probably has a few in his vault.
Oh the man is one of history's rare talents. Incredible.
Such a shame he wasn't recognised for his all of his talents when he was alive.
Most people dont realize what a virtuoso and master guitar player this man was.
You've got to be kidding, right?
?? I think they do!
He was good guitarist nothing more
If you are a musician you absolutely know.
Pure, raw talent. One of a kind.
He seems like a real smooth cat in this video man! Glad you got to meat those folks!
try meet lol
Crazy how you were not able to tell from his music.
@@mattmorris2867 LOL! Yah Meet is what I meant. Too big a hurry I reckon!
So cool you got to be there, I never got the chance to see him live, was totally my bad! 😢
Prince, Awesome guitar player, Awesome performer!
Він бездоганний ❤
Музика любила його, а він любив музику... Ніколи не перестану милуватися цією взаємністю.
Sempre tocou muito!!! Talento único!!! Que Deus ilumine sua passagem!!!🙌
One of the greatest guitarists of all time - and that was just another talent he had omg
Gotta love it when you are asked to play something and then the person talks over it, either to you or other people.
One of the best guitar players ever
The Purple One was and is without equal!! The BEST to ever do it!!!! 💜🐐💜
