@@rickss69 Prince was a very competent songwriter, producer, and guitarist, with flair and panache, but he's not the most skilled or best guitarist out there. Of note: Clapton has also said, at various times, that SRV, JJ Cale, Buddy Guy were the best guitarists.
Of course, Clapton hasn't hung around jazz cats like Joe Pass, Al Dimeola, George Benson much, nor did he ever share a stage with Terry Kath (whom Hendrix is quoted as saying was better than he was) nor Lenny Breault, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Danny Gatton, and so many others. There is no best or greatest guitarist. Too many metrics, too many genres. It's impossible to say.

Prince wasn’t the best at all instruments. But he had an ear to what needed to be performed by any instrument. That’s why if you played with prince , you were of studio caliber.
Princes had that ear. like that actor in th movie whiplash (forget the aggressive bs), prince wanted perfection
He wasn’t the best guitar player. Stevie Ray Vaughan , Randy Rhodes , Eddie, Ritchie Blackmore, Dude from ufo were probably all better than prince on the strings.
But prince could write a song. Prince was like his own genre, studio musician mixed with rock pop and lyrical rap schemes.

It was cool for me seeing him pre-superstardom and after. That 1st concert I saw was in a 3900 seat auditorium in a small city in Georgia. I knew then and there that he would go on to something special, but couldn't have imagined what was to follow.
A short 3 years later Prince and the Revolution were selling out multiple dates in major cities across the U.S. including The Superdome and The Orange Bowl(which they renamed The Purple Bowl for the concert). I have attended over 100 concerts and have always told people that The Purple Rain Tour is my favorite of them all. I caught two shows on that tour. Although I've been a fan of his for a long long time, I had never heard him play acoustic guitar until just now. Humbled. Blown away 🤯. Deeply, sincerely, impressed. It makes you wonder how he ever found time to get as good as he is on that single instrument considering everything else that he had going on with writing and arranging and performing and going over every mind you detail of his career as he built himself into the superstar that he became. He has the guitar chops of someone who has been in the woodshed with a guitar and nothing else for his entire life!

@@danzap384 How is Prince over-rated? Well, a lot of his schtick was lifted from other artists. Rick James was a HUGE influence on Prince. So were producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who used to play in his band but broke off to do their own thing as super top top music producers.
Also, a large portion of Prince's compositions sound, well.....kind of the same in terms of melodic rhythmic structure.
Hey, I love Prince's stuff, but a lot of it is seriously mediocre....or borrowed from somebody else.
