It's so baffling to see someone so far into their career still constantly innovating in ways we never anticipated. Just when you think everything's already been done Steve is always there to prove you wrong.
I wouldn't call this innovating, cause it really doesn't move anything forward. Instead it shows how far one man can push his own talent to even greater heights. This can only be played by the very elite of the masters.
@@42ZaphodB42 Never seen someone build like 7 different instruments into one guitar body and play all of them simultaneously, and with the inclusion of semi-fretted-semi-fretless necks on top of that. That's not innovative at all? I mean we've seen Michael Angelo Batio doing double neck stuff but nothing like this. This is definitely treading new ground as far as guitar playing is concerned.
I totally agree. For this, clicking Like just isn't strong enough !! YT needs to add a Love button !! BTW I 've been subbed to you for years MJR. I knew you had good taste in music ! Rock On !!
I love how he creates a unique instrument, a unique song , a perfect utilization of the instruments performance and turns it all into a killer sounding composition with the performance to go along with it.
Of course he is a great player….just wish he would put less emphasis on the show biz side of his things, and maybe stray a little bit away from his signature Frank Zappaish overall sound!
Been listening to this guy for 20 years and somehow, he STILL manages to blow me away. His multi guitar work never disappoints. I was blown away with I Know Your Here, and now this. Unbelievable. 👏🏾👍🏾
The instrument itself is a work of art, the amazing sounds created by the master himself is an elaborate show. . Pure genius. This is art. Eargasm at its finest. Anyone else listening to this at 2am?
I agree, the instrument, the design, the backdrop, the directing, the whole thing, was a real work of art. Its nice to see such feeling still put into this, every note is so important, every sound fx, the attention to detail here shows.
Just when you think Steve Vai has reached the ultimate level, he goes and composes a piece of music that takes the bar even higher. I’m blown away by this performance and don’t really know what else to say.
@@Matt_Holcomb While Knappsack was an incredible piece of music, I enjoyed Teeth of the Hydra much more because the tempo was much slower and it’s not as busy. I could actually hear what he was playing. And what you don’t play is just as important as what you do play sometimes. I could hear the emotions and atmosphere he was trying to create here. Playing a lot of notes really fast doesn’t always create the best piece of music or tell the best story per se. It’s more important than ever, especially in instrumental music, to use the sounds to influence the audience’s state of mind because there aren’t any lyrics. You have to use the sounds to create a mood. Simply put, I liked the mood I got from Teeth of the Hydra more than the mood I got from Knappsack. Both are excellent. I just like Hydra more. Just my personal preference. If you like Knappsack, that’s cool. There is no right or wrong when it comes to music, just preferences. Have a good one. I’m just glad we can agree than Vai and his music are great.
I mean. Steve is one of the true rock stars exist today. His aura, passion, ingenuity. He could very sit back but no he always challenges and innovates. It’s beautiful. Always appreciated his passion for guitar and music. Great guy
If you’re looking for guitar mastery that goes beyond the paradigm of the eighties (no disrespect at all to Steve Vai) check out any video by “Ichika Nito.” Watch a few videos and you’ll know what I mean. Not a virtuoso for the sake of it, the song always comes first - but man in his technical skill outstrips some of the masters of the past.
When I first heard the album, my ears couldn't conceive all the sounds coming from one instrument. Now that I watch Steve perform it, it's a totally different experience. That is one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. Period. Edit: I've honestly never been more inspired to explore music. The mental clarity I got from seeing that is astonishing. Thank you, Steve.
I hear ya on that. This is my favourite track on the album but now seeing him do all that on one guitar, overlapping the instruments, it’s mind bogglingly impressive and Steve just confirms time and again (think knappsack) why he’s the greatest of all time.
Watched this with my jaw dropped all the way through. Congratulations to Mr Vai for always pushing the envelope on the instrument, what an inspiration to younger generations of musicians!
@@SmoltingWassie Stole the concept?🤣The first prototype of Hydra is from 2016 while Luca first used a multi-neck guitar in 2018. Do some research before you start accusing people of "stealing concepts"..
Mr Vai is a true example of a genuine musician. No matter what a master can do yesterday, that has nothing to do with reaching for evolution. This man continues to evolve musically and that's incredible. Love to you Mr Vai
It's so funny, there's so many people these days with multiple neck guitars or 10 times the strings they normally have all doing stuff on TH-cam and whatever. Then along comes Steve Vai and shows you how it's really done. This man never disappoints. I'm a drummer and I'm not usually too into guitar stuff, but this guy has mesmerized me since the mid 80's. He was a big part of my childhood and it's nice to see the guy never stopped growing, his ego all seems to be contained within his guitar playing. He never comes off as the absolute legend that he is.
Steve just wont stop will he, he's definitely one of the greats whether you appreciate it or not, he's never lost his mojo unlike a lot of solo guitar guitar players
This Man has been at the CROSSROADS........for most of his life And Slaying it every single time!!!! With a sound that no-one, anywhere, has ever heard before!!!! HUGE respect from me.
I love that this triple necked monstrosity was used in a fresh, creative, and musical manner without an ounce of novelty present throughout this entire song. Then again, this is Steve Vai we're talking, here. One of America's greatest musical treasures strikes again as only he can! This is just plain brilliant, and I expect no less from the man.
He’s outdone himself again! One of the most iconic, creative and talented guitarists ever. Tops on anybody’s list. Love the multi-neck and the bell bottoms just cinched it. Great!!
You are my god. I decided to play the electric guitar with 14 years when I see you in Crossroads. And I see you in live ,3 years ago here, in Valencia. These are bad days for Valencia, we have the biggest inundation of the history. A message for your fans Will be very wellcome. Thx Stivy
I've counted at least five different instruments in this guitar - Regular guitar - "Sitar", half fret half fretless - Bass, half fret half fretless - Lyre (or kind of) - Some simple synthesizers I'm still impressed on how he not only can conduct them all beautifully, but also in how he came up with such BRILLIANT composition! Long live Steve Vai!
I think what you call a Sitar I'd classify more easterly like a Japanese koto... but I dig where you are coming from. Knowing Steve Vai, he probably meant it to play as both ( if not more) anyway 🤣
Oh fuck, this is giving me dangerous ideas. But then Steve Vai has been giving me dangerous musical ideas since I was 12 years old. My gratitude for his art & the inspiration is immeasurable.
Was at his concert in year 2023. What surprised most is that Steve was playing note for note - it is tens of thousands of notes - his compositions, exactly same notes he was playing like 15 years ago and how it sounds in my head. Not a single note was added, removed or changed. It is incredible!
Wow! There's something so hypnotic about this performance. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to figure out how to write and play something on this beast, then to turn it into a cohesive performance. Absolutely stunning.
Wasn’t it the other way around, he had something to write and needed Ibanez to build it since years ago. Forgot which interview it was but it’s was definitely regarding the Hydra.
Just read an interview and he said it took him six weeks to learn how to play the Hydra. That's a serious learning curve to work with just to feel comfortable with playing it.
Saw Mr. Vai in New Haven last night. Just. Freaking. Wow. What really impresses me is that while he can shred at a million notes per second and do things that shouldn't even be possible, he is really an incredibly expressive guitarist. He also clearly loves what he's doing and had great rapport with the crowd. His band was top of the line, too.
Yeah, I mentioned this on another video, but his emoting as a guitarist is top notch. He really thinks he's getting that bend slightly over the top by giving it stink lips. It's awesome to watch.
just saw him play that in Boston on tour with Satch. It blew my mind. It's more than just practice that brought those guys up to the top. It's a love affair
I just saw Vai play this last week! Unbelievable until you see him play it and hear the sounds he gets out of it. He is otherworldly. He moves like a dancer, he looks like a model with those gorgeous cheekbones. ❤
It would take Steve Vai to properly express and push the limits of such a beautiful instrument. They are a match made for one another. Unique, original, mysterious, and otherworldly. I imagine he is having great fun exploring the possibilities with this gem.
This is the new era in instrumental music. We are witnessing a history. Im just speechless. I was a hundred percent sure no one is gonna surprise me anymore until I’ve watched this!
Man Steve is such a hero and I haven't paid attention to him for awhile because I got listening to other stuff but he is the guy that really blew my beginner mind when I was first learning guitar. He's such a creative player and continues to do some new stuff that isn't quite expected. He's done so much for rock guitar! I've seen him in concert 3 times and was never not blown away. I hope to meet him maybe some day!
Notice how, with ALL of these instrumental options at his disposal, he still allows the piece to breathe. Taking advantage of the ability to not fill up every moment with something...pretty amazing!
I’ve been a fan of Steve’s music for a few decades…and he constantly improves with each day that passes. Thank you for sharing this amazing piece with us Steve, you are certainly the best guitarist out there today. This one touches the soul if you truly “listen”!

Okay... after extended listening/watching... and processing, I just had to add that... Steve , you ALWAYS start with (and maintain) musical integrity/ingenuity in your compositions and playing. Even your extended solos are melodic while being technically extraordinary... demonstrating mastery and taste concurrently. This instrument... the Hydra... and the piece you composed for it are a perfect example of your imagination, understanding and respect of the musicality that the Hydra could/should demonstrate (in the right hands of course). Your ability to conceive, compose and then execute the various parts is a true testament to you arguably deserving GOAT status. I've enjoyed your playing since the Frank Zappa days, and this guitar, song and performance have demonstrated that the greatest are always challenging themselves to reach new heights. I'm sure there will be other "Hyrda Performers" that copy/follow, but congrats on being THE revolutionary pioneer behind this instrument, composition and performance.
I've been a Vai fan since childhood and it makes me so happy to see the guy still evolving, still experimenting and pushing boundaries. What an inspiration. Thank you for the music Steve. Love you man.
Very well said. Everything about the guitar that might look like a "gimmick" on paper shows itself to be integral to the composition in the hands of Vai. The video does a marvelous job of showing all the ways he conducts this all-in-one guitar orchestra in support of his musical vision. Bravo!

Ya know. I think Steve Vai is the, hands down greatest guitar player/songwriter of his genre that I have ever seen in my life. I'm 58. I just played this video for my wife and as I'm watching him play this song, and I'm going out of my mind with laughter of joy and amazement, when it was over I realized that she didn't care. It didn't do anything for her and that's ok I guess. But I just don't understand how she couldn't even say something as simple as,"Wow! he's really coordinated." I wish I knew some like minded people who I could share my excitement with.
I’m in the same boat, my friend. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Now I’m a going on fifty family man with four college degrees and a wife who don’t give two flips about guitar- other than which ones look nice hanging in the hallway or parked in the living room corner next to an old tweed. It’s a feeling of isolation and loneliness as I long for my tribe. One love, brother.
Come on man, women's minds are not built to appreciate technical mastery hence why nearly ever achieve it. Trying to bond with them over that is going to be a lonely road. Your better off seeing Steve Vais closest relation to the Kardashians or whatever the boomer version is Marilyn Monroe and trying to get her interested through that.
I've been following vai my whole life I'm 63 now seen him in concert a few times, still in total awe of his creative talent and strength with his craft. In other words "WOW "
I'm with ya bro, been a fan since Zappa. His backstory is so inspiring. Just saw his blog about how he pursued Zappa and broke through to the side of ....Legends.
Steve I started listening to you when "Flexible" came out and you have surprised, astonished and reached me emotionally in so many different ways over all those years and albums. I have an old high school friend that to this day only has to say the words "Little Green Men" and we both crack smile and chuckle like little kids (we're both in our 60's). Thank you for being the exemplary human and musical explorer that you are. We music lovers are so grateful for all you've given us.
Steve was such a big influence to me when I started playing guitar when I was little. His musical ability is so inspiring and his creativity just keeps getting better and better.
I felt chills, a lump in my throat, a tingling sensation in the back of my neck, and a sense of something new that I hadn't seen or heard before… even from him. Amazingly unique outdoing himself, enjoying hearing his own notes and what only he can do, I have no words to describe my feelings of joy thank steve for your neverending magic
Thanks, Steve. Not only for creating and hexagonalizing incredible sounds, techniques, and strings; not only for composing and interpreting a song that transcends space and time. I thank you for representing the strange complexity of what makes us something more than human.
Bro’s got the baseline, chord progression, and melody all in one big ass guitar. Not to mention him plucking that acoustic guitar during those legato licks. That takes some next level coordination

Steve is a guitar-god. Prince was similarly multi-talented in many many instruments. He played to my certain knowledge - with expertise - piano, guitar, bass and drums, and may well have been able to play orchestral instruments like woodwinds and brass as well.
That was so sick, it felt like a 2 min vid... Jesus man, Steve Vai is so cool. Love watching him basically do victory laps at this point. Been watching a ton of Marcin and Henson/Page lately but this guy still brings it with such a fun and joyous energy. Thank you for this video and magical creation!
I have been a Steve Vai fan for years. But when I saw this monstrosity of a guitar, me and my buddy starting chirping it, using jokes about him using it to chop wood, or making it into a coat hangar because nobody could play it. A couple of months later, he releases this video that makes me and my buddy feel like fools for ever doubting him. Steve continues to push the boundary further and further up.
props for sharing. when I first saw it, my reaction was "that thing looks useless". The mistake I was making was it was useless for a conventional guitar player, but def not for Vai. That guy is a-ma-zing.
Oh this guitar and outfit are SO Vai! Lol I think it's hilarious. Not doubting his abilities, but I prefer Satch or David Gilmour or Roy Buchanan more. I think his overuse of swelling in his pedals is what turns me off.
When i first heard "Building the church" i thought, Hey, cool keyboard sequence.. but lets see ya play in on guitar. That was the first and last time I ever doubted Vai. 👑
This is beyond imagination... How could someone possibly think, create and play this guitar or whatever the mighty structure this is. Melodies, chord progression, all those awkward sounds combine in such a fascinating way that from the first moment it takes you in a whirlwind and doesn't stop till the end. Such a masterpiece by the master.

The track is crap, like most Vai’s tracks

th-cam.com/video/6x9jcQBVCxc/w-d-xo.html
I wouldn't call this innovating, cause it really doesn't move anything forward. Instead it shows how far one man can push his own talent to even greater heights. This can only be played by the very elite of the masters.
No it felt like he's muddying the waters of what he did in the past.
So well said. Unbeleavably good stuff from Mr. Vai.

This is why he played with Frank for so long. Pure Talent and Artistry , a Master of the Instrument.

Just when you think Steve Vai has reached the ultimate level, he goes and composes a piece of music that takes the bar even higher. I’m blown away by this performance and don’t really know what else to say.
Idk dude Knappsack was close
@@Matt_Holcomb
While Knappsack was an incredible piece of music, I enjoyed Teeth of the Hydra much more because the tempo was much slower and it’s not as busy.
@@Matt_Holcomb Knappsack was purely technical. This here has melody

Seriously, very few guitarists can consistently blow my mind again and again. Steve vai is an absolute creative legend.
Agreed. Absolutely out of this world.
If you’re looking for guitar mastery that goes beyond the paradigm of the eighties (no disrespect at all to Steve Vai) check out any video by “Ichika Nito.”
Watch a few videos and you’ll know what I mean. Not a virtuoso for the sake of it, the song always comes first - but man in his technical skill outstrips some of the masters of the past.
@@kuro2797 Yeah been watching his videos for ages now, maybe OP has also? Thanks for the suggestion though.

I think the top neck’s a twelve string, but it’s extremely impressive though, right?
this is him with only 2 arms, imagine the music he could create if he had all the arms necessary to play all the instruments at the same time

For Steve it prolly took no time at all. I mean the man basically freestyles the halo theme sing
It took him 50 years to get there, then he made this up in a few hours 🙃
Wasn’t it the other way around, he had something to write and needed Ibanez to build it since years ago. Forgot which interview it was but it’s was definitely regarding the Hydra.
Just read an interview and he said it took him six weeks to learn how to play the Hydra. That's a serious learning curve to work with just to feel comfortable with playing it.
Can you imagine playing this on *Rock Band* or *Guitar Hero* ? A custom three neck guitar/bass controller with this song would be BOSS!

Okay... after extended listening/watching... and processing, I just had to add that...

I wish I knew some like minded people who I could share my excitement with.
I’m in the same boat, my friend. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Now I’m a going on fifty family man with four college degrees and a wife who don’t give two flips about guitar- other than which ones look nice hanging in the hallway or parked in the living room corner next to an old tweed.
