I fish remote lake trout in Northern MN and Ontario. I've pulled Big Buddy heaters in my Otter Lodges for over 15,000 miles. I use a filter on my heaters and have not had problem one with either of my heaters. Both of my heaters are from early 2000. Still running strong and just bought two more.
From WA state. Lots of content doesn't really translate to our fisheries but I watch every vid regardless cuz they're fantastically good and ya never know when those personally pertinent bits of info will drop. Thanks for all you do Tom! And being a great dog dad!
There is a filter made for those buddy heaters if you put them on a large tank. Might help them last longer. Hope it helps. Thanks for all the videos. You are a go to for so many people who fish.
Tom, I noticed when you were talking about your Buddy Heaters that there wasn't a filter on your LP line. Everything I've seen about using a 20# tank with those heaters they recommend the in-line filters. That may be the reason for your issues. Keep the good stuff coming.
I run with an atv bcuz I use it for hunting purposes as well. I got a carrier rack for the back and put a plywood sheet on top with 3 holes. 2 for 6 gallon buckets and 1 for minnow bucket. I then have a backseat box for some gear and put the auger on the front with kolpin grip mounts. The only thing I still need is a way to mount my finder to the atv but I previously had used my phone on a handlebar mount for motorcycles and had the map up on that. Being in Southern WI we don't have ice long enough for me to justify the sled over the atv and can't swing owning both.
I can't wait to get out on the ice. Thanks for the awesome videos, you've been helping me out learn a whole lot about walleye fishing over the past year.
If you make a lift or bracket to get your buddy heat 3-4" off snow. I have noticed ahuge improvement. Main idea is not setting on snow. Seen on foam pads but never herd the results.
Awesome setup I’ve been ice fishing with snowmobiles for a long time now. One thing I’ve learned is to haul them in an enclosed trailer or else it leads to clutch problems. They rust and then they start sticking
Check out diesel heaters. Zero condensation, no propane tanks to haul. 1 gal of diesel will last 24 hours of continuous use and very little draw on your battery.
I bought 3 Elliott rods the 45" 42 and 44 and the 2B rod bag. The issue I have is with the butt of the rod being so long I have to push the piscifun carbon x 1000 past the tube and the line is tight against the pvc. Also with a bait on the keeper it is easy to get a hook in the material by the zipper since it is higher than the butt of the rod.
This guy got a buttload of money he got the sickest boats sleds rods electronics Id love to have an ice setup like this but we just dont get enough ice which is a bummer bc im stuck walking
Nice! Otter makes a Similar center council of plastic that I use, I'm going to strap my heater to that, its always a pain getting the heater out and it takes a beating sitting in the bottom of the sled
I agree with you 100% on the heater thing. After this many years you would think there would be more competition in the ice fishing heater market, give Mr heater a run for their money. Overall coming out with some better options at this point. I think you have the wrong hose on your heater there, you either need the Mr heater model #F273704, which is a 10' hose that according to them does not require a filter, or you can run your shorter hose with a filter. I now have 2 of these longer hoses and haven't had issues yet. But I now carry a big buddy and the normal buddy heater, with 2 propane tanks and 2 hoses, basically 2 full setups because I have had issues with heaters in the past and days on the ice ruined because of heater failures.
Tom, sorry for this late inquiry. I'm trying to duplicate your rod bag set up on the box. Trying to find the bungee straps you're using but cant. Do you remember the manufactures name? Thanks, Tim Watson
Great video, love the setup. Taking mental notes for future as where I fish here in Colorado I cannot use a wheeler or snowmobile which sucks @ss for hauling out sled/hut and gear especially if any amount of snow. Moving back to Montana soon so will put tips to use there.
I dont know if it helps but buddy heaters offer 2 different style hoses not just length but material as well sometimes if you use the one length hose they recommend the filter and if you use the other hose you dont need the filter because the hose was a better quality and the better quality was the 10' hose
Tom, I'm in the market for a rod locker. I've checked styles like a rifle case or the scheels 2.0 but don't like how bulky (wide) they are. I see you are running the 2b Ice XL, I like the case but cant figure out how it fits the 4th rod. Are there any videos out there or do you have any good pictures of how the rods lay in the case? Is the 4th rod / reel stacked on the bottom layer of 3? That's all I can figure out. Thanks for the help! Keep up the great content!
I would like to see your trailer setup. Is the sled and flipper on the same trailer, or is the flip over in the back of the pickup. I have my Otter cabin in the back of my short box Chevy. I wanted to add those hitch pivot bars, but then the toboggan would not fit into my shortbox truck. I'm stuck putting the hitch on and off every time.
I have an ice question for my fellow anglers. Here in ND we had 10 inches of ice last weekend, this week with all the snow and low 30's and high 20's temperatures, Im not sure if the ice was weakened this this week. In general, would a week of almost two feet of snow and temps like that weaken the ice or in general would it stay the same. Any input or opinions would be appreciated, thanks!
I hate buddy heaters as well and am supper disappointed to see that the new competing brand like dewalt and heat hog how the same exact starter. we just want and electric start on a small heater is that too much to ask?
@@TomBoley Carrying them flat is harder on the ceramic burner, as they don't have much strength that way. Same reason you don't haul glass or granite slabs flat. I haul mine upright and have never broken one. Also, the internal gas tube is conformed in a way to form a sediment trap. Hauling them on their side could allow any sediment buildup to possibly make it past the trap.
I'm assuming it may have something to do with sponsors or along those lines, but what made you switch from Eskimo escape series shacks to Otter? I have both and love them for their own reasons but was curious what made you switch.
As a person who has fished in both, (not sponsored, not even by the wife) the Otter's tend to be build better and have features that Eskimo just doesn't have. I do run a 949i, and it is enjoyable. But after sitting in a otter and seeing the little pockets, hangers, even the bag to carry the pop up, it's much easier.
No argument that Otter's are built better in general, but I will say after owning the otter lodge and the escape 2800 which are both modded, I do find myself bringing the escape along most days. I love that the skirt goes all the way around back side of sled and I do like the chairs better.

AW YAS. I've always wanted to see a video like this! It helps people like me to potentially rig up and makes it more practical.
thanks for the set up video... just bought seld and shack... building out my set up.
I like the table idea in the hut... I'll have to make one for mine! Thanks for the idea!
Diesel heater is a good alternative to a buddy heater. No fumes the main components are outside the shelter leaving more room inside

You can buy the filters off Amazon cheap
Daddy Boley with another banger
Tom, made a portable diesel heater for the ice season, game changer. Dry heat, low fuel consumption, increased safety - worth looking into.
no propane fumes has 4 hot air vent put heat where you need it
my kid has one mounted in his otter has exhaust cut in to sled
Buy cases for all your buddy heaters I keep all of mine in a case when not using during the summer and winter makes a huge difference

The buddy heaters need a filter if running anything over the 1lb tanks. The gas can have debris since its refillable.
Never had an issue
Smart idea bolting that milk crate down to the sled 👍

Great informative video, just purchased the pro lodge using several of your ideas
I can't wait to get out on the ice. Thanks for the awesome videos, you've been helping me out learn a whole lot about walleye fishing over the past year.
Can you give a close up of those bracket mounts you made for the kolpin latches …. What are they made of? Please and thanks man

Wow…. Wish I could just download that set up to a flash drive an upload it to my sled . Beautiful man.
Ohhh someone got a new sled!!! Nice!
Need a video of what your go to set up for jigging pan fish.

Just leave 4 inches of slack in your line
Polaris titan 800 is a beast of an ice fishing rig

Tom....I would like see what boots and sock combo you found to be the best for really cold temps. Thanks for all the great videos.
Tom, sorry for this late inquiry. I'm trying to duplicate your rod bag set up on the

Trying to find the bungee straps you're using but cant. Do you remember the manufactures name? Thanks, Tim Watson
My GSP (Stella too by the way) is a lap dog too.
Been looking forward to seeing your setup. Great video 👍
Thanks for going through the details!
Good luck on the ice Greg!
Nice setup Tommy boy, ran into you at bait and liquor in Hayward. Hope you have a good ice season!
Nice video! Thanks for taking the time to show us your setup Tom.
Yeah still in the boat down here in Southern Wisconsin. But GREAT info here!

Always good to see how you set up your system. Like the way you think.
Great insight on how you rig your stuff. I’m always looking for ideas!
nice, that milk crate it gold!

Do you have a link or an exact name for the mounting straps for your transducer pole? They look like good quality
Thanks Tom. Lotta useful ideas.

Cute Stella reminds me of my male GSP. Close in color and everything. Just don’t think he likes the cold! Lol great vid
Great video as usual! Keep grinding Tom love the content!
That is definitely a nice set up, thank you for sharing
Who makes the round tow behinds for the flip over. I don’t think you mentioned the brand
Otter

Might I suggest getting a heat hog. The tilt feature is worth it!
Excellent set up
To sum it all up... fishing is expensive! 😄
Tom, can you spell the company
name of the mount you use for the mega live pole. Trying to find one on line. Thanks
Kolpin Rhino Grip Flex
I have a 2 year old GSP. She's Nuts.
They are insane......best of luck
Check out heat hog heaters. I just saw they from a other TH-cam channel the other week. I have not tried them but they look better .
Tom, what is the bracket you use to attach the Digger Auger carrier to the front of the machine. It doesn't look like you went thru the front bars.
Front hitch attachment
I hate buddy heaters as well and am supper disappointed to see that the new competing brand like dewalt and heat hog how the same exact starter. we just want and electric start on a small heater is that too much to ask?
Awesome tips, thanks Tom!
Have you tried the heat hogs out yet? Great informative video!!! Dig it.
Thank you !!! Very helpful information. 👌
nice, thanks for the info
Awesome setup
Do you clean the pilot orifice? I used a qtip with alcohol
Yeah I always do that a few times a year
You are set, awesome set-up
You forgot the Yamaha VK 540
VK ALL THE WAY BABY!
Always forget about the yammie
Great sled for the hardcore ice fishing I do, and easy to work on if something were to break
Awesome as always thanks
Lots of great insights.
What a cool video
Put fuel filter on your buddy heater they work for ever at least for me
It's mainly the honeycomb looking face that breaks on most mine
