Thank you, there's always more to discuss but only so much you can put in one video. Hoping people can treat it as a sheepshead encyclopedia of sorts haha
Moved to Charleston 3 years ago. Caught 1 sheepshead on rod and reel in those few years while not targeting them. Watched this video plus some of your others over the past few days. Went out today, caught 12 in a few hours using your tips and tricks. Plus some reds and blacks. Super helpful videos, I appreciate you. Disclaimer...I have been fishing those breach docks in your videos on foot for a while, so I was fortunate enough to be in good water.
I have never fished for Sheepshead, but have been wanting to try it. Could not have asked for a more informative video. Can't wait to try some of this out when I get back to CHS in the Spring. Thanks for posting!
SOLID VIDEO ! Watched every second of it ! You have Absolutely got the Convicts dialed, could not find anything you said that I didn't agree with 100 Percent. Keep up the good work. Tight Lines my Friend!
I'm not an expert by any means but I have caught my fair share of Sheepshead. I must say you are spot on with your information. I have fished for over 30 years and even I learned something that I didn't know. Keep up the good work Sir. Your detailed explanation will no doubt help others who are eager to enjoy fishing but may not easily comprehend. Very good job. I'm subscribing. Tight Lines Sir 🤙🏿
Awesome video .Thanks for sharing. I think people call them convicts because of their black and white stripes. You know years ago the guys in jail had to wear the black and white stripped cloths. Anyway, new sub here!
Thanks man! Yes I forgot to mention the stripes as well, the fact that they steal just makes the nickname that much more appropriate. Love your channel by the way, thanks for subscribing!
@@MakeTimeForFishing Right on. I've watched 100 or more Sheepshead fishing videos and they never ever get old. You are definitely on the right track! Our Sheepshead in my area are getting ready to Spawn and their are schools of them all over the place. Next month the Sheepshead bite is going to be off the chain!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that! With this warmer weather we've had up here the last 2 weeks I've definitely already noticed an increase in the sheep action, can't wait for Spring!
Thank you so much for this discussion. I have passed up fishing for them because i never can catch them. Now i see all of the things I have been doing wrong. I do believe i may have a chance now for at least one out of the hundreds of lost shrimp. J/T
Excellent video. Clear and concise. Covered all the basic techniques. Like these videos mixed in with your classic day on the water fish catching videos.
I don’t have access to a kayak, so my go to for Sheepshead is definitely the jetties. I put on a 20 lb leader and free line a shrimp about 5 feet infront of the jetties
When setting the bobber depth, i start with extra line, so i know its going to hit the bottom and lie the bobber sideways. Then watch the bobber and the stopper. All that line between the bobber and the stopper is how much you move the stopper to be just at the bottom plus however much you want to be off the bottom. Having a bright colored stopper helps so see from far away(i use a bright yellow srting to tie my stops). And, if you have a split shot on your leader, you have to take that into account. You can have the split shot off the bottom, but the bait is at the bottom.
This well produced vid will be the good to Introduction to Sheepshead Fishing. Most def keep up this high quality and thoughtful Coursera-esque instruction!! Well organized yet tactfully opined.
great video for me as I am seeking to put some food on the table and up my fishing game targeting a different species loads of helpful info here and in all your videos also because I fish Charleston waters
Great video! I love sheepshead fishing... mostly using a "bottom feeder" jig and fiddler crab, mud crab, or a chunk of blue crab. Always look forward to your trips and tips. Thanks! from NC coast.
What a great video. Lots of very detailed information.I am not a sheepshead fisherman, but now that I have moved to FL,maybe I’ll give it a try. Up North i used to fish for tog/black fish. Seems fairly similar. Thanks again!
Thanks Tom, hope the info is helpful! The tactics are every similar to tog from what I hear but I've never had the chance to target them myself. Goodluck down there!
Great video. I have been waiting on this one for a while. I am very excited for the weather to warm so I can get back out there and try the tips. Love the winter time instructional series , please keep them coming. Oh, cool artwork!
Thanks man really glad you enjoyed it! Hope the tips pay off for you and can't say I blame you for waiting for warmer weather I've been freezing out there haha and thanks! The print is a Christmas gift courtesy of my parents
Super great job!🙂 I plan on going to the Charleston area in March, what do you think of the shem creek area for Sheepshead! Would you know a better public access point around Charleston? I watch all your videos. You are such a very talented and nice looking young man. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for the information! Do you think it would be possible and/or smart to modify the slip float rig to use a knocker rig under the float as opposed to the Carolina rig? I'm wondering because that way, with the weight against the hook, the bobber would go slack if the fish fed "upwards", whereas with the Carolina rig they would have to swim 6-8" upward in order for it to visibly change the presentation of the bobber. Just a question--I was going to try it but figured maybe you already had and knew whether it worked or not! Thanks again for the video!
You know what I've never tried a knocker rig. I had thought of it but my concern was the bobber getting stuck on the leader to main line knot. I do think if that wasn't the case or if you used a shorter leader it could work very well. It makes a lot of sense I may have to just give it a shot one of these days! But if you beat me to it let me know how it goes!
You're welcome! Definitely fall into early winter if you're fishing inshore down in the SC area. If you're fishing much further north I think it's later Spring or early summer. But you can catch them year round down here you just have to weed through the bait stealers.
Thanks! You know I have with pretty limited luck. I know some people swear by it buy it hasn't really been my thing so far. I've been meaning to revisit it though... thanks for watching!
Newbie fisherwoman- Do you attach the sheep head jig directly to your braided line? It looks like you attached it to florocarbon but don’t recall hearing that.
Yes I do attach it to an approximately 3' section of 20lb fluorocarbon leader. But you can go as light as you want if there's no structure they can break you off on or heavier to 30lbs or so.
Great info! Do you prefer letting the bait sit on the bottom or would it also be OK to have the bait suspending in the water, maybe a foot or two from the bottom, or even higher up near the surface?
Thanks Andy! I personally let it sit on the bottom almost all of the time. It keeps the bait from moving too much which makes it look more natural and helps you get more bites. The sheep can be feeding at any place in the water column though, but I find I have my besr results by focusing on the bottom.
When it comes to sheepshead jig, do you tip the hook with oysters, or something else, or leave it bare? Thanks you for sharing all this knowledge. We have a larger area in the bay that has thousands of pilling with metal plates on them, that were set during WWII to fool potential enemy (airforces) into thinking that our air field/based were located there instead of there actual location 30 miles away. They are mostly in shallow, 2-4 ft, water. The current isnt particularly strong there and the tidal flow is usually < +- 1.5ft. Do you think that this area would be productive.
Hi Bobby, yes I tip the jigs with crabs primarily either fiddlers or mud crabs and occasionally blue crabs. I have used oysters as well with some decent success. The spot you're talking about sounds enticing in the warmer weather. Since it's shallow and a huge area I would recommend searching for the pilings that are a foot or two deeper than the rest and prioritizing your time there. Those deeper pockets are much more likely to hold fish, but the minimal tide swing is also a factor. If you notice any that have a strong current break try those as well. Could be a hotspot but only giving it a go will tell you for sure! Goodluck and thanks for watching
You really helped so much. Couple questions. Do you use a barrel swivel between the leader and weight for the Carolina rig? Are these fish only present at the bridges etc in the winter? Definitely got a sub.
Thanks Jim! Yes I do use a swivel to attach the leader on my Carolina Rig. And they're still inshore in the winter, but tend to be found in a bit deeper water since the water is warmer than the air. Most bridges are in deeper water so they definitely flock to bridges more in the winter but they're still on the docks too!
Thanks! Not sure about pedal drive rentals but there are some kayak charters which provide the pedal drive kayak. Beaufort SC Fishing does charters out of Beaufort if you're interested in that. Goodluck!
Thanks Calvin! Hook size is definitely important in my opinion. If you have a really small hook relative to the bait you're using they may not get hooked OR could swallow it. Alternatively, if you use a big hook relative to the bait it could be so big they don't bite or just eat around the hook. Size 1 seems to be the happy middle ground for me.
You can get the rod and reel at toadfish.com! If you want to check them out you can use code MTF15 for 15% off. And I've had mixed luck with the dropshot it's not my personal favorite.
you're right I completely forgot to mention that, it's more of a play on words what I was referring to since they're "bait thieves" as well. Good catch!
Scraping a pylon kills the pylon. Once all that growth is scraped off those sheepshead don’t have anything left to eat on. So yes for the day it’ll catch you more. But overall it’ll kill the spot. Just something to think about.
Great information. I have already learned so much from your videos, but this just spoon fed it all to me. Haha

Every try those frisky fins sheepshead jigs? Curious to know how they compare to the ones you use or if you’ve had any luck with them.
Always thought they were called convict fish cause they have light and dark bars on them like the white and black stripes of old prison clothes.
It's actually both you're not wrong!

My question is how far south do i have to go to catch monster like that iam in Massachusetts.
the term "Convict" comes from their stripes...the same pattern for old convict uniforms from the early 30's-50's....
you're right I completely forgot to mention that, it's more of a play on words what I was referring to since they're "bait thieves" as well. Good catch!
Pinned!!! Thank you!!!
Where do you fish at for sheepshead
What end does the hook go?
Scraping a pylon kills the pylon. Once all that growth is scraped off those sheepshead don’t have anything left to eat on. So yes for the day it’ll catch you more. But overall it’ll kill the spot. Just something to think about.
Completely agree, that's why I don't personally do it.
Im in the same area as you. Would you want to meet up and doo some sheepshead fishing?
😊
Convict comes from their stripes
You're not wrong the stripes are also a reason they're called convicts, that plus their bait stealing!
No discussion on bait?
I disagree they’re called convicts because of their strips, convicts used to wear striped uniforms.
You're correct, I've heard it both ways but I meant to include that as well and just forgot.
They are called convicts is there pattern matches old prison stripe uniforms , not what they eat. All fish steal bait😂
