Could you do a video on feather trebles to see if having feathers makes a difference.. for one I have a lot of top water with feather trebles …. I have phased out fishing hard lures with rattles and instead add small glass rattles to my soft plastics and my bites have increased dramatically even in the heat of summer

So which clicking sound is the closest match to the clicking sound of crawfish clicking across rocks? Tungsten or lead.

As a new fisher, ive gone fishing twice on a boat and struggled a bit. I have a conventional and spinning reel. Just wondering if you suggest this as well?
A Carolina rig is a great setup for anglers just learning the sport. Start off with a shorter leader - 18" to 2'. The casting is a little tricky so a side-cast lob motion will work for you to get started.
Which one sounds more crawfish? Do have any video of that?

Do you have any videos of Craws clicking their pincers together? -Is the Craw smart enough to know if he keeps doing that he's going to bring the enemy right to his position? also when a Craw Molts does he realize how vulnerable he is and that he should hide until his Exoskeleton grows back again?? also up North- about what time do Craws start looking for a Winter Home and become less available as a food source -So I know when to put away my Craws and switch to Baitfish Imitations??
I’d be interested to know if a bead even matters. It seems to me that the majority of the sound comes from the weight making contact with the bottom. The weight and the bead seems to be in constant contact when dragging.
That's a great question. I'll have to do some experimenting on that one.
Now if you could just record the sound of a crawfish climbing over rocks.

If bass can hear crayfish walking across rocks, this must sound like firecrackers going off in their head. The big question is does it attract or detract and cause more or fewer strikes.
Some c-rig old timers insist that brass sinkers are the way to go... I wonder how those sound.
I need to redo this with the brass for sure.
Two tungsten bullet weights both big ends with a bead in-between must be loud under water that's my setup had great success with this method both clear and stained water

Wish I could share my pics on this set up: Ive caught monster bass ( in summer) with a texas rig, bullet weight, glass bead , tied to a worm on an EWG. The sound is soo key, especially a glass bead hitting the tungsten weight.

@rodneychandler82 I have very bad hearing in high range, so it sounds louder than tungsten
As bad as it is for the water i prefer lead. Was hard to switch to harder metals.
Is there any chance you might revisit this with brass weights?
I definitely need to. I realized I had brass weights after I had this finished.

Watching and hearing you underwater footage is so cool Steve. I long while back when umbrella rigs for bassin were a newer thing the major magazines were buzzing with the idea of "scenario rigs". Often it was a rigging where something was chasing something else or schooling like the umbrella rigs simulate. Watching this footage reminded me of the soft plastic following some small crustacean or bug along the bottom. It got me wondering if that isn't a part of the appeal past just the attraction you mention. As always you do get me thjinking. Thx bud.

I like my leader around 12" or shorter is my go to before the Texas rig on everything soft plastic baits. With fast pop's to jump in off the floor. Sometimes the off baits that don't run straight sometimes work when nothing else is working for me. it twiste throw the water like a dead fish. My friend throw those away because they don't swim straight even if the worms are bent thy will not use them. I'll take them for those days they don't want to hit. Thing how straight that was going 🤔

I've been using plastic because I've heard that the glass beads can chip and cut your line. I've also heard, and have to imagine that glass makes a much better clacking sound.

Excellent video. These videos make you think. My first thought is the Carolina Rig would probably be less effective in a muddy bottom lake. About half of my local lakes consist of silted mud. But, I have been to big spring time tournaments at Lake Eufaula Alabama, where everything is muddy and anglers do well on the carolina rig.
I wonder which sound do the bass prefer, lead, tungsten or maybe the tones of another material.
I mentioned before, but hopefully you can do a Forward Facing Sonar video with underwater sound recordings. I would like to hear what FFS sounds like from various distances, 60, 80, 100’ and others. Then, what does the FFS sound like with the various power gains available.
It would be neat to record what FFS sounds like as you sweep the transducer from side to side. The transducer is kinda like a directional “Yagi” style radio transmitter antenna. I wonder can bass hear FFS off the sides 90 degrees, and behind 180 degrees the forward position of the transducer.
Also you can’t forget recording the “Perspective” mode of the transducer. Prospective mode might effect fish in general because the fish lateral lines are more horizontal in position.
All of these sound recordings should benefit the understanding of angler and fish interactions.

I kept waiting for you to say “and now listen to the brass weight which everyone threw in early days of carolina rigging”. Would’ve really given me a better conclusion on if the new stuff is better because I sure caught a ton of fish on and won a lot of money on those brass weights.

I love these getting to hear the lures under water. A suggestion for another video how about putting rattles in worms or craws and shaking them to hear the differences in rattles glass vs plastic and small vs large etc. Great stuff Thank you

That's fascinating! It makes think about all the times I've heard pro anglers say they prefer tungsten over lead because of the higher pitched sounds it makes. But if bass hear best in that 600 Hz range and below, I'm wondering if lead would actually make a better sound.
That is an excellent question. The lead is definitely a more muted and subtle sound.
if a bass can detect a crawfish moving across rocks, i really don’t think lead versus tungsten would make a difference. but i do believe it would make more difference to the angler for sensitivity.
The tungsten is definitely more sensitive. It’s amazing what can be felt.
I'm experimenting with using two small steel egg sinkers (two 3/8 oz=3/4oz) for the clicking noise and also to avoid spending $8 for a tungsten weight, which seems ridiculous.
Those tungsten weights are super expensive for sure!
Sweet. I wonder if there is a definitive study on the frequencies that lateral lines pick up on the most. To me, the tungsten sounds better, but then again, I'm not a fish.

I have not yet, I am actually working on some crawfish videos and that is something I am going to try. Not sure if it will work or not, but will hopefully find out.

They have specific brass weights for carolina rigging. Wonder about those
After I had this all put together I realized I had some of those brass weights you are talking about. I wish I would have remembered those. Lol.
There are specific clacker pieces too. They look like little washers.. might be something
Why would you use a Carolina rig instead of a Texas? Or a Texas instead of Carolina? Also can you use a snap swivel and surgeons not instead of thing directly to the swivel?
These are all great questions! I will have to do a video covering this, but a quick answer to your first question - the Carolina rig covers a larger area quicker and keeps a very horizontal presentation. I also like it easily defines the bottom composition while the lure dragging behind it is a more subtle float and dive action. The Texas rig, while it can be used effectively dragging the bottom, has a little different look to it with the weight and lure tight together. And the T rig definitely is the choice when it comes to picking apart stuff vertically. I have never tried a snap swivel so maybe there is someone here that can help answer that one too.
I have heard that some guides will not allow novice anglers to use the Carolina rig, because it's more difficult to detect bites, so more fish get gut-hooked, increasing mortality.

Tungsten is crazy expensive. And of course, as soon as I tie one on it seems like I lose it right away. Lol.
