To reiterate what everyone else has said by this point. "Boombayah" and "Whistle" were their two debut songs. Imagine jumping on the scene with this fucking banger. Mind blowing. The other debut "Whistle" is a completely different sound in the best way. It was kind of a risk putting it out there because it's so different from what people expected at the time. Turns out, "Whistle" actually won a few awards for "first rookie track to make it to number whatever" on their charts. Good stuff. 100% support a "Whistle" reaction. It's one of my personal favorites.

this is actually their FIRST song ever to be released. along with 'whistle'. these two songs were their introductiom to the world. they immediately blew up in south korea. their actual blow up song was 'ddu-du-ddu-du'. D4 landed them international fame and signed them to an international label and they've been creating bops ever since. great reaction as always!

WHISTLE and BOOMBAYAH both mvs released at same time August 08, 2016 at 8PM KST (advertisements of the time said 8 8 8), so technically co- first song. They were killing it from the start -- won like 5 rookie of the year awards on Korean year end award shows. Their current labelmate friend JEON SOMI (who just released album XOXO on YG sublabel THEBLACKLABEL with same producer Teddy) was center of temporary girl group I.O.i at the time getting rookie awards also.
Teddy and the girls fought w/ label to have Whistle as first release (mentioned in Netflix documentary) since it was more chill hiphop minimalist had a country sounding pre-chorus, different vibe from Boombayah.
Later also did dual songs & MVs on 2nd release w/ Playing with Fire and Stay on Halloween 2016.
Whistle and Playing with Fire are my 2 favorite Kpop songs ever, made me a BLINK early 2017.

I love the song and think it's the kind of ballsy move that only a mononym superstar with confidence and swag could pull off, but it needed to be paired with another song that would balance the release (like similar to my wishes with Jennie's solo, I was disappointed there was no extended fast rap verse to show off Lisa's skills outdoing her LTHM rap, possibly in the b-side. NOTE TO YG: WE NEED AN EDGY RAP LINE B-SIDE ON THE NEXT BLACKPINK EP for JenLisa and a vocal line song for ChaeSoo).

As people here have said, they were dropping songs in pairs. And they were ALL like A-side songs. They were each so freaking good that you wanted to show people, share with others how good this group was. Everyone wanted to know more and more about them. They eventually fed those fires with a lot of content. Where there wasn't content, fans were creating their own content. Never has one group blown up like this one. It was the ideal type of group with great songs at just the right time when worldwide people needed entertainment,... and there was a need to be attached to something. And here were these 4 gorgeous individuals with this music ready to perform. You could just follow them around in a reality show and it was gold.

THIS IS their first song lol 😂 they were already a big hit before debut because they are under YG, which is a big company, a father of widely known artists. In kpop, they have a predebut phase where the members are introduced to the world before they debut. The company will post dance practices and vlogs so we get to see a sneak peak of what the group will be like, therefore making them popular before they release music so they can have a fan base already.
