    One of the best videos I've seen on any topic. Great explanations, great pacing, and I especially appreciated your taking the time to show Chase's handicraft in real-time. Much appreciation!

    Great video. is there any issue if the sealant is slightly above/higher between the concrete floor sections? Could cause any concerete harm such as pressure down and etc

    • @dscottgillett
      @dscottgillett  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know why you want it higher than the concrete. Would be very difficult to leave it higher anyway as you tool it smooth.

    Why do you use silicone and not polyurethan sealant? Silicones are much softer material and dont have much abrasion resistance. Do you live in a snowy climate? Wondering how they hold up to snow plows? Thanks

    • @dscottgillett
      @dscottgillett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Silicone based sealants have better adhesion and don't shrink/harden and pull away from the concrete with time like polyurethane sealants. I've tested both materials on my personal driveway and after 2 years poly will begin to failed and need to be replaced, after 6 years the silicone is still holding strong. Yes I live in a state that has 4 seasons and gets snow.

    • @dscottgillett
      @dscottgillett  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, but only when the concrete we are working is older and surface weathered. The sand on top will blend in better with the concrete like in the video.

      @@dscottgillett Actually, I was wondering about sausages that still have material left in them when completing a job. Can you keep a partially used sausage until you need it again? Can you keep an open sausage for a week and use what's left?

    • @dscottgillett

      @leekreeger9885--Dude, it's difficult to cover every little detail in a short video like this with out making it 45min long, which no one will watch. If the small chips are loose and come out, we glue them in and do the best we can to fill the tiny crack. We didn't show this in the video because its not what the video is about, but thanks for giving me the idea of another "how to" video. I have been sealing joints and cracks like this for about 6 years along with my concrete lifting business 10yrs. I have never had a call back for joint and crack sealing in those 6 years so we must be doing something right. Cheers

    I am an architect student and have a research assignment to do about this control joints and There is something i dont understand, in 8:59 there is still cracking in the concrete so what is the importance of the control joints. what im trying to say is that the concrete tiles (divided concrete) is still have a bad shape. hope you could answer me asap. thx

    • @dscottgillett
      @dscottgillett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Michael, if you learn anything about concrete in your studies learn this, "if you have concrete, it will crack"!! Control joints are to hopefully control where it cracks but that's not always 100% successful.

      I was a Real Bonafide Caulker for decades working for different companies with different Standards ( This guy who Cannot knife would never make it till break time) and have caulked miles of this type of concrete. Most Caulking on Concrete is Just Wrong ( even though we did it all the time) Caulking Sidewalk joints and many areas where concrete or whatever else meets walls There are many things caulked and sealed that shouldn’t be and would actually be quite shocking and unbelievable in England or so many other countries where they have standards and aren’t arrogant enough to believe that it’s okay to just caulk and seal up everything. I’ve seen so many different types of stone work where Clueless ones are stuffing backer rod in the joints and caulking or sometimes No Rod and Wet Tooling Wet Sponge wet wooden stick!!! These are all considered Flim Flam No Skills No Clue I’ve seen beautiful old stone work destroyed because Arrogant Americans think they can shove foam rod in and splash job caulk it literally Reverse engineering something that was meant to Breathe through the mortar which should be weaker than the stone and this is all just basis 101 caulking/ pointing stuff. I see concrete all over the place where caulking is blown out Completely failed the concrete is literally Spitting it out sometimes. Completely failed caulking on concrete is sometimes when it’s Caulked Long before the concrete has fully cured ( I’ve done it myself many times working for union contractors) I’ve seen plenty of old concrete where it has the old style brown expansion material ( now it’s a foam thing or rubber) and those joints never caulked are fine Caulking sidewalks only pretties up the joints but Really just causes damage caulked green and too much caulking injected with hardener whatever and the caulking causes the concrete to snap cracks break Sometimes concrete is just poured All one piece and saw cut 1/4 inch joints and Really should just be left like that. Caulking those saw cut joints is pretty stupid really I see that shit all cracked up everywhere and if they Never caulked them they’d be fine I know because I’ve done miles of it at a Way Way higher level than this rookie. Wise old man who was a real mason many years ago informed me of the Fact that Other nations are Way Way Ahead of us, centuries beyond Because of Americans being Arrogant and the older I get Every day am seeing Examples of that and it’s only getting way worse. There’s guys over in England who can lay over 500 bricks an hour and that’s spotless perfectly tooled plumb level straight and Not the Splash Jobs like American bricklayer contests and these 500 per hour bricklayers Are Humble and Zero Arrogance Unlike Americans who make videos thumping the chest about how clever and skilled they are meanwhile Every single thing they are doing would absolutely get me fired Completely unacceptable in the real world of caulking. This guy Cannot run a knife and would never exist on a real caulking job back when I did it and I’m not just being the nasty old man. Caulking is the most misused Over used Clueless Everyone thinks they are a pro on utube and I haven’t seen one yet that is anywhere near the standards or skill needed Caulking is a Trade in this nation and not just a skill

      @@dscottgillett I am long since retired Geezer now but we never took pictures or videos or any of that fucking around. You’re Video at least DIDNT show Flim flam wet tooling. I’ve personally been on big money union caulking jobs and the only reason why we’re there is that the last guys got caught Wet tooling ( and that’s just the spit finger lick and stick flim flam due to no caulking skills) anyway The caulking looked perfect and it was completely ridiculous to cut out thousands of feet of new perfect caulking It was Obviously Just One guy on the 6 man crew but the whole gang got the hatchet. We weren’t Allowed to use single stage sausage or tubes. We mixed bulk compound activator color etc with a low speed drill and Never Diluted with solvent like some companies did I started out mixing cans and prepping solvent washing cleaning and even cutting the joints straight cutting out old caulking whatever All these videos I see One Guy who claims he’s been caulking for 40 years and Can’t Even Mix a can like any of us had to. We All were Slobs at some level starting out clueless and trying to keep up with someone who’s caulking 1000 feet plus and has been doing it for decades. I used to have caulking all over me as a rookie like everyone else There was No going slow once all the cans started mixing. Those sausage are Expensive and not nearly as good as mixed stuff. It’s got No body, substance, whatever doesn’t perform as well. I worked with guys who caulked So Long that they could put the Exact amount in flat work joints like that and No back knifing Just knife it Sealed. And I’ve seen others who Load it Way too full and Back knife EVERTHING because it’s easier to tool and they don’t care how much they waste ( Wasting more than 50%) This guy caulking back knives a big load out and then Still doesn’t have enough in some areas. You have to be able to turn the knife 180 instead of one way stroking scraping. That Wayne Belcher guy who calls himself an “ expert “ and has 40 years experience Is Shocking and unbelievable to any real caulker who would be fired for doing some of the sloppy shit he does. It proves that Time means Absolutely Nothing in this country as far as some of the trades especially masonry caulking etc Where this country has zero standards and We Only Strictly Adhered to Our Standards. There really never was an “ industry standards “ even though many say it due to the standards They had to follow working with extremely fussy picky professionals. Every video I have seen has been pretty Awful Wet tooling with big sponges and not even putting bond breaker Everyone thinks that they can do whatever they want in America Flim Flam Wet tooling tricks that would get me Fired and clueless wankers making videos of all kinds of garbage work that would have got all of us fired back then

      To keep water from flowing into them and eroding the soil under the pads and or expanding if it freezes which will lead to cracking.

Anyway, Im thinking to go over it with cement again to level it all out. How would I do my expansion joint markings? Like put a post where the only expansion joint is at?
