The Set You All Want - LEGO Lord of the Rings 2013 Battle at the Black Gate (79007)

Todays throwback review is of the 2013 released LEGO Lord of the Rings set, Battle at the Black Gate which feels fitting for the current weeks we're in since we just had the reveal of Barad-Dur, more villain landmarks.
This thing was pretty well received at release for giving us an enemy area and the minifigures really went above and beyond here.
So the Black Gate is an interesting one. I do think the shaping here and overall design is great, its really recognisable to me being based on the final entry and all. I’ve always thought the bad guy stuff in movies just has great aesthetics that translate to toys really well. We didn't get too much in the LEGO line for Mordor so its cool to have what we have and I’m not against buying multiple sets for an accurate build as long as this one works on its own. I actually think it works better as a standalone piece just because of those extra doors. To improve this set, I don’t mind the squashed nature if we actually got a second tower for the other side. Removes the idea of combing two sets but maybe they should have worked more on the army builder side then if they really wanted me to buy another one. I don’t see much of a “Battle” here with two soldiers and 3 named characters. Excellent minifigures though regardless of this but I don’t need 2 Gandalf's, Aragorn's and Mouth of Sauron dudes personally.

I’m glad Lego is making a new mouth of Sauron! This set is awesome but there is no way I can spend $300 on it.

Cool looking wall piece, with a bunch of special figs to go with it. I think 70 dollars is a big ask for this (at the time), but given it would probably discount at regular retailers, it could be a decent addition to the LOTR line. I think many would love to have the option to buy this today for that price. I wouldn't be against LEGO for re-releasing the whole old LOTR line for people to get into, altough the timing at this moment would be a little weird. There is no movie or series coming out that has anything to do with Lord of the Rings and I don't expect anything relevant coming out for quite some time.

I thought about this too but Harry Potter also hasn’t had anything released recently that actually linked to Harry Potter the character and we’ve had the longest run ever for sets with that theme. Releasing alongside Wizarding World spinoffs, we do have the Rings of Power and some animated properties in Lord of the Rings releasing soon

@@RayLilySeries I'm not familiar with the animatied stuff, but I know rings of power has very little to do with LOTR outside of using the name.
As long as it sells well, I don't really think LEGO cares too much about the timing.

Believe the upcoming animated stuff is more prequel based material. Also have that strange new Gollum movie that was just announced too? Maybe the series is coming back?
