Senator Fawcett, Thank you for asking the questions that we want answers to. Some one must be accountable (not a 'coward' committee group) for signing an order to scrap the Taipan helicopters and burying them. If the helicopters were stripped, where did all the components and parts go? How did ADF receive payment? They are desperately needed by Ukraine. I also heard that ADF is selling retired equipment at auction, as an Australian tax payer, where is this auction list available to view?

The army says the MRH-90 helicopters are useless, if the helicopters are dismantled and buried, their opinion can't be disputed. If the helicopters are given to Ukraine, and the Ukrainians get valuable use from them, then it will show that the army was lying.

No not surprised either, it's exactly how I expected it to operate, deniabilty of responsibility is at the centre of self interest, No wonder the ADF is a basket case!!!!

As an Australian mother who lost her Son in Ukraine, I am totally disgusted with these useless public servants. Thank you Senator Fawcett for showing us all how shallow they are, even a smirk on one of theirs faces. The lot should be sacked.

Respect senator! For these so called professional representatives to be so inadequately informed about their own position within such a situation is clearly concerning for all Australians.
Would it be fair to say they opted to refuse to mention the powerbrokers and foriegn higher achy who govern and reiterate our government.

Too many Chiefs - not enough Indians. ADF has one of the highest GEN to Other Ranks ratios in the western defence forces. Noting, all personnel promoted to star rank are approved by the Defence Minister (political influence in decision making might be an issue). A far more robust system would be independent promotion boards to assure civilian oversight of the military.

It has nothing to do with FPR. They told it correctly. Rather than guess and potentially inadvertently mislead you, they did the right thing and took it on notice to find the actual documents that were submitted and confirm EXACTLY who signed off on them. The more valid criticism would have been why they didn't have those documents available immediately as a reference given how hot a topic it is.

It comes across to me that there's another reason Defence doesn't want to give the Taipans to Ukraine, an ulterior motive that's being obfuscated by these other non-issues.
If Ukraine wants them, and we don't want them, give them over. It's that simple.
We need to be doing more to support Ukraine. We have a lot more capability to do that than what we're letting on.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe someone in the defense department thinks that calling those helis useless but still holding onto them and hiding them for future use in case of a potential future conflict with China is not a bad idea.
If I was all the way over in Australia I wouldnt be so keen on giving any hardware I might need later because it'll end up being damn near impossible to get any kind of replacement for it in short order.
As troublesome as things look over in Europe and Ukraine at the moment and as incredibly generous as Australians want to be with their equipment, I really think they should build a bunker for those helis and put em in storage for future use if there's ever a conflict with China.
I respect the hell out of Aussies. They've been great partners with America in terms of defense and security. As an American as sad as what is going on over in Ukraine is, I am much less worried about what is going on over there than I am about what China could do in a Pacific theatre. I realize its not 1940's but to be honest the reality is that China and Russia have alot more in common than not in terms of government and they both see the USA as evil and a strategic threat they'd like to be rid of. I think Ukraine is surrounded by NATO partners who are supporting it and will continue to support it as they realize they much prefer that Ukraine border Russian than them. So I am much less concerned over the affairs of Europe than the potential of war in the Pacific. I worry that should Putin manage to achieve a certain degree of success in Ukraine it might trigger Xi to take Taiwan or North Korea to attack South Korea or God knows what.
Im not worried about Ukraine and Europe as much as China controlling the Pacific. Russia cant drive their tanks across the Atlantic. I do worry about the Pacific.

@oompaloompa7430 yeh we know all about China. They tried to cripple our economy following Covid by imposing tariffs on all our exports. They shon laser beams at our aircraft and they attacked our navy divers using a sonar ping causing deafness, not mention all the other stuff that we don't hear about.

Considering Angus Campbell is Chief Of Army. He should be answering questions! Just override the Army, the Australian taxpayer owns the Taipans so the government should overrule the Army and gift them to Ukraine.

Its actually the Support Agency. Once something has hit its end of life for one reason or another and no longer required then it is out for Disposal. Simple process really.
Disposal can be several things, Resell, Dispose as in break it apart for cannibalisation or destroy.
If resell then they sell the thing off to parties that are interested. However certain restrictions may come into play, such as approval from foreign countries if purchased overseas like the Taipan.
So maybe Defence did not get approval to onsell? Maybe they have to dispose. These are questions that need to be asked as well.

One individual I wouldn't think would sign off on something, it would be a committee process. However, I do believe at the end of that process, one individual should sign off as a final tick. This will never happen, though, as then one individual can't take accountability and not be held to blame.

The ADF (Army) representatives fronting the enquiry are highly indicative of those senior ADF officers who have been neutered by the Defence Minister to provide no meaningful information that might go against Labor policy.
This is understandable when all ADF one star and above promotions are at the behest of the Minister...
