After all these years, we still have Lithgow Arms producing pew-pews. I would totally support tax-payer funds going to increase/expand their operations. We also have, apparently, the Sovereign Missile Alliance, which is meant to develop and produce Aussie made missiles...not heard anything more about it since its inception.

Good work Senator!!! Finally someone who cares how our money is spent!!!! Additionally the govt response was incompetent twaddle, as a long time PM I can tell you that any program of works like this should involve at least 3 projects.
1 a project to produce ships to meet our minimum deployment requirements.
2 a project to update the designs and build out the fleet to meet our actual desired deployment requirements with ships that also have the required capabilities.
3 a project to take the updated designs and develop a program of updating the existing fleet to meet the required capabilities.
At the same time, the program manager SHOULD be developing an overall program plan, as well as a strategy to scale up, or scale out the build capabilities, should the Stategic imperative change. These projects could all be run in parallel via 3 distinct project offices meeting our actual security needs much more quickly.
Don't let them BS you senator!!

Why is Australia in this position to start with? the LNP had 9 yrs to build up our defense. Now it's all the ALP fault.
Dutton brought three different types of of dud helicopters.
He peferred spending 1.8 billion dollars on offshore detention centers.
We already had detention centers in Australia run by Australians centres.
The LNP stuffed up the Japanese subs deal stuffed up the French sub contract.
Of course it all the ALP fault??

    • @Xaran001
      @Xaran001 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@gingertom56 OK firstly I never mentioned party, I was simply commenting on the ineptitude of the permanent gov bureaucracy that remains in power, regardless of the makeup of the senate or house. So these ARE or at least represent the "people" who stuffed up the subs, bought the wrong helicopters, etc.
Secondly, party politics is a scourge in every democratic nation. I vote based on what I think the country needs most, what I believe will help the most people and the policies put forward. In my life I have voted for Labour, Liberal, greens, Democrats (when they existed), One Nation and the Gun Party (I supported the buyback, but had issues with a couple of the restrictions).
I hope that clears up the intent of my criticism, happy to discuss further if you like :)

  • @HMASJervisBay
    @HMASJervisBay 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Australia's defence strategy has traditionally relied on its geographic isolation, alliance with the United States, and a technologically advanced but relatively small military force. However, this approach faces several challenges in the current geopolitical climate:
Manning levels: The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has struggled with recruitment and retention. As of 2024, the ADF had approximately 60,000 full-time personnel, which is considered insufficient for a country of Australia's size and strategic importance. This undermanning affects readiness and the ability to sustain prolonged operations.
Equipment modernisation: While Australia has invested in advanced platforms like F-35 fighters and new submarines (2050 in service), there are gaps in other areas. The Army's armoured vehicle fleet is aging, and there are concerns about the Navy's ability to project power across Australia's vast maritime approaches.
Industrial base: While growing, Australia's domestic defence industry cannot sustain the ADF in a prolonged conflict without external support. This raises questions about sustainability in a protracted engagement driven by an insufficient supply of unreliable energy platforms.
Cyber capabilities: Despite investments in cyber defence, Australia remains vulnerable to cyber attacks that could disrupt critical infrastructure and military communications.
Northern exposure: Australia's sparsely populated northern regions remain a strategic vulnerability, with limited military presence and infrastructure. Protection of major mining ports, E.g. Port Hedland and Dampier, are vulnerable, and the reserve air base at Curtin is to be brought into the strategic defence picture with both fighter and army infrastructure ASAP.
Strategic fuel reserves: Australia has historically maintained limited strategic fuel reserves, which could be quickly depleted in a conflict, affecting military operations and civilian infrastructure. Fuel is imported and stored. Control of sea lanes by a nefarious force ends fuel imports. A refinery on the east and west coasts is reinitiated ASAP.
Given these factors, it's doubtful that Australia could independently maintain its sovereign rights against a determined major power adversary without external support. In a hypothetical scenario:
Australia could defend against limited incursions or grey-zone activities.
It could sustain short-term, high-intensity operations.
However, in a prolonged conflict involving threats to sea lanes or requiring sustained air and naval operations, Australia would likely require significant allied support, particularly from the United States.
To address these issues, Australia would need to:
Significantly increase defence spending and manning levels
    Accelerate domestic defence industry development
    Enhance regional alliances and interoperability
Improve resilience in critical infrastructure and cyber domains
Develop more robust and dispersed northern defence capabilities.
However, in the landscape of superpower tensions, would the USA defend Australia, a step that engages China? That is doubtful. Current posturing by Australia and the US is for show, with no real teeth for a protracted confrontation.
Australia is a super-rich resource nation. In the coming decades, resources will be the only things worth fighting for and dying for.
The Australian Defence Force's capabilities and strategies may shift, and the situation could change rapidly in response to emerging threats or government policy recalibration.

Other nations have built up their own capability (which means actually helping local businesses and companies to get established and innovate). Foreign multi-nationals are really good at ticking all the boxes and have teams of people that work on bids. If you bury local industry in red tape during the evaluation phase, we'll have zero local capability - which means we can't sustain a local capability if we ever need it.

I can't believe the engineer is saying it's going to be slower to build these ships and that they can't get them into the water in the timeframe. Sack him and put someone in the job that can!

@@kevthecontrarian1614 yep because the British want the work done in their yards. And because we are a small player in the arms world, multinational companies can (through their governments) run rough shod over us! The whole AUKUS thing will eventually be the British & US establishing a servicing base here for their subs & their industries being given a leg up thx to the Australia taxpayer!

Since when have we had a “Defence “ force? WW2, being the only war fought on behalf of our own nations defence, while every other war has been fought on behalf of either British or American geopolitical interests. We are merely a subservient tool, used by the Anglo Americans in their delusional ambition of maintaining a quasi empire. In reality, many countries are turning towards China and Russia, with the Belt and Road initiative, which is showing an alternative to the current stand over tactics employed by the West. A multipolar world is the only way forward for humanity to finally obtain peace.

So Australia will have these ships coming into service sometime in the 2030's with second rate radars? Seriously, if the ship is not fit for purpose given the modern threats it will be expected to face, then why bother building it at all? Choose a better ship design.

Australia is a huge continent and would be hard to attack but similarly it's just as hard to defend.
We hear about the future plans and the likely costs of defence and nothing proposed convinces me that millions of Australians wouldn't be slaughtered if we were attacked.
We could spend $trillions and that wouldn't change.
There is one proven defence that has worked for over 70years yet it's never discussed.
Arm our new nuclear subs with nuclear missiles.
No two nuclear powers have ever declared war on each other.
Make ourselves more trouble than we're worth.
Only one sub need be hidden away at any time to be effective.
Something like 40 warheads per sub is a massive deterant.
Let's stop making plans to defend the country when we could be stopping wars before they start.

Lessons from Ukraine war, usa can't provide so we have to be independent, with a large drone related focus. And our energy resources must be utilised to reduce manufacturing costs. Add scalability. Done.

The lot of these people are useless, the amount of resources we sell off for next to nothing we could have used the royalties to fund real sovereign defence where everything can be researched developed manufactured here in Australia without relying on outside sources. Literally we advertise to the world that we are defenceless waiting on submarines, the blow-out in expense, this desperation of could be this decade might be next decade. This is why defence has to be done in-house on blockchain so we track all contracts, resources, and especially expenditure.
