The Unknown, Unsponsored Underdog Who Slayed His Demon To Win It All

  • iDom wasn’t anyone’s pick for Capcom Cup 2019. He had an insane bracket, he played two mid-tier characters, and the one player he hadn’t beaten all year was one of the tournament favourites.
    It basically seemed impossible for iDom to push past the first few rounds, let alone win the entire tournament.
    But to really understand why iDom’s run was so incredible though, you have to know who iDom is and where he came from.

      Not detracting from how insane that it is but sfv’s best streak ever was via tool assisted when it was playing guile under the name rzr_infiltration, and no one knows how long the streak actually was because the system stops counting at 999, it was on an episode of excellent adventures of gootecks and mike ross back in the day

      @@Venom272X This bot cheated his winstreak. I'm not talking about the input reads but rather the fact that his winstreak kept going even after the bot was defeated. There are many videos on youtube where the bot loses on a streak like 200, comes back after a couple sets and still has the same streak. So no, this bot doesn't hold any winstreak record.

      He's also the only one to ever make it with a mid-low tier in SFV Capcom Cup. Du had that broken season 1 Mika and Guile. Mena had Birdie when he was easily top 5. Gachikun played no other than effin Rashid. It was a top tiers only club until 2019.

      Its funny. Laura got a huge buff in season 2 and everyone was afraid of her yet Idom was one of the few really making her work. One part of her design that never got nerfed was her ability to rob matches and die to characters/players who know how to keep her out consistently. That is one part of Idom's game that got better along the years is learning to fight that match up. In comparison to other Laura's he never over extends so he is always in good position to make a make that play. He even worked on his mental focus in crucial moments. It is what got him top 8s in big events in 2019.

    • @stonevicta
      @stonevicta 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@t4d0W his reads are also amazing! Dude catches so many jump backs with that badass looking anti-air heavy elbow it's crazy.
      Also also, he's got some really sharp fundamentals and can play neutral miraculously even with Laura's stubby normals. He even uses light elbow to whiff punish sometimes (!). It's beautiful watch him go toe to toe with characters that clearly got the upper hand against Laura on neutral like Cammy, Karin and Ibuki and it feels so satisfying when he manages to get in and put them in the blender.
      Man, I must confess I'm becoming kind of a Idom stan. lol

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Punk was. Both guys were young up and coming talented players in SFV within the northeast region (Idom for NYC and Punk in Philadelphia). Idom didn't get to travel much early on outside of regionals but when Punk was there in the same bracket, he handily beat him. Even in the TKONY SFV exhibition, Idom was the guy everyone in NYC was afraid of. But everyone else was afraid of Punk as he beat everyone else in such effortless looking fashion. It just looked like Punk was in another level of consistency and as good as Idom was, his demon will always remind him where he's at. But that all changed.

    This is special if you kept up with NLBC SFV History. Idom became the new up and comer (though technically he's been around since UMVC3) from the NLBC scene and definitely the guy who would challenge Punk in those EC events like King of New York for SFV (shout outs to Chris Hu's excellent commentary). But every time these 2 collided in those events, Idom would always fall short to Punk's decisive and confident play. At the same time Idom went from a regional threat being the strongest Laura player to a guy who couldn't even get out of EVO pools 2018. To making top 8 at EVO 2019 and finally making the most out his situation when he was knocking at the door of destiny. Sounds like a short TV documentary but there is always that guy who comes from humble beginnings, always has fun but learns to become a better competitor. Even after winning Capcom Cup he was still waxing people back home in his locals like nothing has changed.
