- Was Early 2.2 As BAD As We Thought? (Geometry Dash)
in this video i discuss early geometry dash 2.2 when the update released in late 2023, and whether the early 2.2 update levels in the geometry dash community were as bad as people were predicting. This covers everything from platformer levels, pixel style, early 2.0 comparisons, and the lobotomy geometry dash trend. Thanks so much for watching!

Really really great points!! Deep down I always had faith that 2.2 would go well, since I think we as a community have definitely improved at pinpointing what makes a "good" and rate-worthy level compared to early 2.0
That being said, I feel like a lot of the fear of 2.2 actually came from the levels made on private servers. Every now and then you'd see a crazy 2.2 GDPS level circulate on Twitter, or big channels like Nexus. These levels were usually 100% made with the intent of being cool to watch, but absolutely miserable to read or play. And in all honesty, I think the reason for that is because if you're going out of your way to download a completely new client for Geometry Dash, you feel much more inclined to play around with every new feature it has to offer. On the other hand, actual rated 2.2 levels feel less like they're trying to flex every new feature and more like they're either using them for some extra spice, or picking one as inspiration for a themed level. It's no surprise that my least favorite levels (usually very excessive pixel-styled levels, or Dash and Explorers remakes) all seem to come from former GDPS creators who are too stubborn to just make a normal level that isn't trying to show off.
I still think we're in the pretty early stages - mainly I've noticed a lot of experimentation with what is and isn't acceptable for camera movement and shaders. I see lots of levels that fire off random shaders (like hue shifts that affect orbs/portals), or add random camera offsets and rotations in places that don't feel like they add anything meaningful. It's pretty normal since they're still brand new, but as time goes on people will take more mental notes from the levels that use them well and it'll be behind us.
Also, lately I've seen more classic levels with the mirror portal than the arrow trigger and I just think that's kind of funny

I think what really made a difference was Robtop making Dash. For every single update, the main levels have inspired what people create, and in 2.0, we got Geometrical Dominator and Deadlocked.
Now, back then, it was clear Rob didn’t know how to use the new triggers to make fun gameplay, because as fun as Geo. Dom. and Deadlocked are now, they are definitely filled with gimmicks that make them terrible to sightread. Because the community copies the creator, so many did the same, leading to the 2.0 gameplay situation. But now, with Dash, Robtop clearly understands how to effectively use his new triggers and made Dash have genuinely fun gameplay, instead of being a mess of blind jumps. This in turn inspired the community, so the start of 2.2 was much better received.
did you actually play dash? that shit is like geodom on crack

Dash was decent besides the spider part
The memory blocks part in deadlocked is hard
There were some good levels in early 2.2, it was just memes that fueled the shitposts. 2.2 allowed for lots of jumpscares or other crappy stuff that people found funny to be put in actual levels.
Short answer: No. It was FIRE (in the hole, of course!)

Idk why people thought early 2.2 levels were gonna be bad when we already had 2.2 gdps for so long beforehand.
I think a lot of the people who would've made bad levels just made them in the GDPS
The community has also matured a ton since early 2.0. Remember even without the random moving objects a lot of rated levels had absolutely no color theory put in mind or anything and just used whatever, but still got rated, which probably contributes to everyones bad memory of that era
For me, I've found that gameplay in lots of levels has become impossible to sight-read and now require practice mode. I had fairly good expectations that things were going to be fine, but they really aren't.
Good. Levels should be learned with practice mode
@@aTtsb Not if it's a 7 star, especially at my skill level (my hardest is 8o). Demons are at a difficulty where practice is required, which I'm fine with. And I hope you understand that by "practice mode" I don't mean "practice run". You must exclusively play demon levels if you think that practice should be required for levels. Sight reading is important, and recent levels have failed to understand that, especially sub-10 star levels.
@@BanefulOtter fair enough (I mostly play demon levels and wave challenges and haven't beaten an insane demon yet)
Tbh most of it come from bad transition. Since arrow and camera triggers are invisible you have to add little bit of time for the player to react like the robot part in dash (use orb if you want it shorter)
Otherwise they're pretty sightreadable imo, just hard to sightread
Damn it’s almost like wavix is still with us fly high brother🕊️🕊️🕊️
Hard to believe Wavix perished in the bloodbath. Rest in tidal wave buddy 🕊️

@@Nightcaat he has ascended to heaven
I'm still getting over the fact that Wavix was sent to Tartarus, where he will suffer a fate of the most wicked kind. I hope that he will one day be able to escape his sorrowful abyss of darkness.
oh so now we are referencing GD levels to Wavix's "death" seriously this isn't ok
People stopped using gameplay rotation is what I’m noticing. Or at least as frequent as it was in the begin of 2.2.
Rotated gameplay can be very time-consuming to build in my experience. Dash used it really well though
Honestly I think the community learned from how bad early 2.0 was, so It wasn't nearly as abysmal
Early 2.2 had its memes, but it wasn’t as bad as early 2.0, I mean there was some shader spam in some earlier levels but that’s about as bad as it got, we even got some masterpieces like ‘and ever’ so it wasn’t bad, I mean in a year or so great levels’ll be released all the time, we just need to get really used to the features.
true, early 2.0 levels are literal garbage (most)
I think people were too safe with the new features and didn’t experiment much
Probably because people either don't know how to use it yet, or that some features gets a bit silly billy at times (one time my arrow trigger worked but when I enable channel only it switches to the wrong direction and fucked up my trigger flow).
the "pixel/dash style" in 2 or so years will be known as the "early 2.2 style" just like the early 2.0 and 2.1 styles that look awful and generic now. I bet the early 2.1 level style looked really cool at the time as well, just like the 2.2 style. Everybody else kinda likes the style that i've heard, and I just think it's boring and uninspired.
Perhaps, it might also be modern levels or glow levels tho
honestly i thought 2.2 was going to ruin the game for a few reasons but now i dont think i would be able to play 2.1 anymore
I think with 2.2, like 2.0, the recent tab was abysmal, but unlike 2.0, rob did a good job of making sure levels that had bad gameplay and abused 2.2 mechanics to make it annoying to play didn't get rated.
"FOR YOU"
Day 19 of asking Wavix to do this: What if Zoink had a heart attack and died, causing Spaceuk to return to the community with no hacks. Then, with the help of cherry team, space verifies bloodlust 2 and becomes immortalized as the verifier. Alternatively, you could just have Zoink dying from a heart attack.

Early 2.2 wasn't bad by any means, it was just a big hype and people experimenting with new triggers, blocks and other stuff, and since all this was new, people were naturally overreacting, making lobotomy levels that I'm sure every player at least laughed at. Now we look at early 2.2 and think that these levels were garbage because now we know how to use the new level creator, plus again, lobotomy levels were a nice start into 2.2, it made gd recognizable everywhere and that's why gd has so many players and fans right now. I love early 2.2.
I still can't believe it's been over half a year since that first night. I still remember joking with friends about some of the moon achievements being impossible because there were like 4 rated platformer levels out. First update I've ever been around for since I joined in 2018. Good times...
The deco was great, the gameplay not so much.
I think early 2.2 was pretty good (especially compared to early 2.0). I've played in private 2.2 server before the update and in the leaked 2.2 betas that were around 2018/2019 and I've seen some pretty wild stuff (at least in terms of gameplay). From my experience I think the majority of the community was pretty tame (aside from lobotomy of course) compared to what it's could've been.
I think we did pretty great :)
Stargrinding harder levels is really annoying in 2.2. Almost every rated harder levels recently are unsightreadable, has annoying timings, and buggy gameplay
Early 2.0 levels have some nostalgic factor to them, I just love the 2.0 part in Phobos
Anyway, if you think about it, 2.1 was a bigger update than 2.0. More blocks than 2.0 added, a lot of new triggers, more orbs and another new gamemode. However, 2.1 didn't introduce any groundbreaking features, unlike 2.0, which added a TON of new foreign stuff (move triggers, unlimited color channels, ...). 2.1 was just an addition on top of what we knew (by "we" I mean players in general because I started in 2023) and that's why early 2.1 levels and late 2.0 levels have the same vibe to them. 2.2 was a bit of a soft start too, because we had GDPS 2.2 which made creators familiar with the shiny new editor.
After you beat Lichtenstein you will have to beat Sint Maartin
i cant believe he still has scheduled uploads... almost feels like he's still here. fly high wavix 🕊
my main issue with 2.2 is that upside down ship is wonky and impossible to straight fly
there was definitely a lot of abysmal levels but i feel like some people overreacted there was a lot of things using shaders and new triggers that were NOT that hard to get used to in most levels but people just complained because they died once.
I also think the 2.2 editor being usable during 2.1 helped make some early levels not being as shit as the 2.0 lvls, as some ppl already had experience with the 2.2 features.
It's just that in gd 2.1 came a lot of newgens from tiktok who did not catch 2.0 and therefore think that the first levels in 2.2 is a cringe, but in fact the first levels in 2.0 is a nightmare, I remember for a long time pissed off with how people too often used move trigger because of which it was unpleasant to play levels
0:13, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS COIN
i felt like a lot of 2.2 levels were basically just 2.1 levels with a few camera controls, shaders, and spider orbs. If they were daring, they would also make ship gameplay but you play as a swingcopter instead.
Not all 2.2 levels did this but a good amount of them did.
I watched skibidi toilet. I lost 73736639361048 braincells. Help.
8:47 he didn't say that, he said 6 months of DEV TIME, that means 6 months after 2.21 and every other bugfixes are done, which is very different
The lobotomemes were PEAK ngl, still kinda miss them
i wonder how many centuries its gona take till 2.3 comes out
good vid but granny 2 playthrough when i wanna hear more granny backshot jokes
We're almost to Liechtenstein
Wavix please lower the music volume next video, the music is so good I keep spacing out and missing what you're saying man
There is another bomb in my pants after eating tacobell
I mean, it’s fair since I doubt being the only developer working on a 10 year old code would be easy
Dude we’re still in early 2.2
considering this video is mostly comparing the current situation to 2.0, which only lasted 1.5 years, and half a year has already passed, i feel like it's completely fair to say that we've overcome early 2.2
not to mention that rob said he wants to make updates quicker now and seemingly finally started using a versioning system so he can actually just postpone a feature that he was working on to a later update
You made it, you beat Liechtenstein!
i was very scared that early 2.2 was going to be awful, and to be fair, it wasn't GOOD but it wasn't awful either. there was a few awful levels here and there but that's that.
I mean if you count the lobotomy memes and shit then i guess, but if not then I'd say no. There were a good ton of good early 2.2 levels each using the features effectively
also wavix pls make vid about if pointercrate made platfromer list version (i know platformer demonlists exist but let's be honest if pointercrate made platformer top play would skyrocket)
Robtop was saying 6 months after 2.21 not 6 months after 2.2
people dont realize that early 2.0 was so bad because 1.9 creators *really* didn't know what they were doing
2.2 is *still* bad, that's the problem. It's late 2.1 with even more garbage in subpar levels that still get featured.
Well platformer levels being added has made the sent system even worse... but still the new icons are awesome
Early 2.2 was literally the only time that almost everyone with a decent experience with the editor could get a rated level. Just make a random ass decorated platformer and boom you got a rate
stormflies prediction was very accurate
Would've been much more fun if the game actually saved and didn't crash every 10 minutes
7:50 Didn’t aeternus get completely remade in 2.2
lobotomy levels were worse then what we thought early 2.2 was going to be
I personally don't think it was that bad. Early 2.0 was really bad
i wanted to play explorers at 2455 volume but instead i got the least funny sfxs
Its still bad because people have no idea how to make gameplay. Levels with bad gp should never even get stars.
2.2 levels arent terrible but there is wayy too many platformer levels that use the auto build future and use pixel blocks as their theme
bro, why Nexus have Explorers beta unlocked??
I am not sorry for what I brought upon this world.
i hate 2.2 its so shader pilled lobotomy maxxing
tldr, you use your keyboard for a single page transition / tapping the play button and it insta crashes the game
I don’t think 2.2 as a whole is bad, but a lot of levels that have come out of early 2.2 are kinda ass. Most of the “pixel block levels” are terrible, because they rely on the pixel block tab for 90% of their designs, leading to them feeling more generic and same-y. platformer levels (specifically the demons) are also straight ass, with many of them feeling really annoying to play, especially the thousands of IWBTG remakes that substitute good gameplay for tight robot jumps. Despite how bad these problems are, we have still gotten some MASTERPIECES already, like Astralith and And Ever, which is more than what can be said about early 2.0.
also lobotomy levels make me want to give myself a lobotomy (still better than the towerverse though :troll:)
Edit: the swingcopter game mode is also ass
5:30 :o im using dis song for level
There’s no way we have been waiting for 7 years for an update and people are complaining about it. I can get the physics problem but let’s be real 2.2 is awesome and ever since the first day of the update there has been banger after banger and I feel like people are just finding random reasons to complain at this point
Don't scare me like that 9:03
WE GETTING OUT OF EARLY 2.2 WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🔥
Is it just me, or is 2.21 an entirely separate update from 2.2? It has a new main level, a new gamemode(ish) a ton of new icons, and other features as well.
At this point robtop should just call 2.21 2.3 bcs it's an entirely new update
who is "we" the only people who thought it was bad was the people downplaying the giant game changing update because of nitpicks and some issues that nobody would care about in the span of a month. regarding levels before 2.2 launch I really wasnt worried because levels that are awful to play I will just not play
Joke's on you my subscribe button is still red
Easy Demons were, most others: Not really
Gauntlets are getting pretty bad tho
Oh yeah I remember that poll
I think what wouldve made a difference is the 2.2 gdps
Lobotomy levels were very bad but early 2.2 levels were kinda bad not extremely terrible though
For me it was the physics
Why is everyone yapping 😭
I enjoyed this early era more than the early 2.1, the 2.2 memes have been one of the best things, #LOBOTOMEMESFOREVER
