Maria bursting in, sprinting for her life because she knows she's late, then freezing when she sees all of the sisters staring at her is just so perfect.
Have had this song in my head all day. My mom’s name is Maria. We are in her last days of her Cancer battle. “Many a things you want to tell her, many of things you want her to understand. How do you make her stay, how do you keep away a wave upon the sand…” We are losing our Maria. How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand…
I have been singing this song to my daughter (marie) since she was a newborn. she is 4 now and has never seemed interested in it.i was doing my Bible study. and I was praying for God to show me ways I can show her love. as soon as I was done and out of nowhere she starts singing this song practically word for word no music just her four year old voice and it warmed my heart to no end. thank you Jesus and Rodgers and hammerstein.
2:03 is my favorite part… “She is gentle. She is wild. She’s a riddle, she’s a child.” It’s funny how the nuns are smiling (or tempted to laugh) at that part. It does confuse their opinions on Maria, positive or negative.
I think the main thing to take away from the song is that they do like her, and recognise that she does try, but in the end she isn’t suited for their lifestyle, no matter how she tries. She’s young and careless and is heading towards a different path.
I think they love her as a person but they’re well aware that she doesn’t belong in the abbey. In the end, they want the best for her, and they know that being a nun is not what’s best for her
The nun who sings the line "She waltzes on her way to mass and whistles on the stair is Marni Nixon, the woman who was secretly used to dub the singing for many leading ladies - Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady", Deborah Kerr in "The King and I", and Natalie Wood in "West Side Story".
Great fact I didn't know that, she was amazing but I have felt bad for her that she didn't get a chance to get lead roles but maybe she was not an actress. She looks much younger than I assumed.
I'd like to add a nice compliment to Julie Andrews. Marni Nixon, who had dubbed the singing for so many female leads, had also dubbed for Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady". On her first day of filming for "The Sound of Music", she was naturally nervous about meeting Julie Andrews, knowing that her dubbing may have cost Julie the role. Julie came up to her the first day, shook her hand, and said, "I love your work!" How classy!
@@donjohnson8079 Perfect info. I would say that if you had not already. Although, to Julie's credit, she did in fact say to Marni: "Marni, I am a fan of yours! "
That's cool, but I will say is was a dick move by the directors of my fair lady to have Audrey sing everything, only to have it dubbed over with someone else's voice without telling her. If I remember right, Audrey had to find out during the premiere
It is easy to view Sister Berthe as overly strict and even harsh, but I still say that she never had any genuinely ill intentions, and was only expressing her honest opinions as well as doing what she herself believed was for Maria's own good - the Sisterhood was a holy lifelong commitment, not to be entered lightly, and if the moonbeam that was Maria was really unable to conform to the expectations, then perhaps it was for the best to let that moonbeam shine elsewhere. Yes. I believe Sister Berthe also did not want Maria to have any regrets or squander her life on what would be an irrevocable choice, and despite being a supposed stickler for the rules, Sister Berthe actively aided the Von Trapps to successfully flee, and I say that says a good deal about this strict yet well-meaning and even loving character. 🙂
Berthe was the one given primary responsibility over Maria's training so it's easy to see why she's the most frustrated Once she calmed down she was fine
they didn’t hate Maria but they could clearly see that Maria wasn’t meant to be a nun and didn’t belong in the Abby and they were right they just wanted what was best for her
@@ddthewolfI do feel sister berthe (the one who says that) is being harsh and too serious tho. Like saying “she’s always late for everything 🙄🤚” with such attitude. Calling her a demon and a headache.

This one of my favorite musical numbers that reveals the main character to the audience in a way that informs behavior throughout the film. You KNOW the captain is not going to be able to reign her in at all. 😂
The directing of this short scene is immaculate- the subtleties of the glances the women exchange with each other; the consistent personalities each have as shown in their gestures, facial expressions, and choice of words. Just wow ❤ All of this while maintaining harmony both lyrically and melodically. It’s just so beautiful 😢
Love the line the revern mother says 🎶 she's a girl🎶 Sums it all up right there, she's just a human who may need to find a place where she really belongs
Uh no, I think they just loved her in the way that she had another vocation. I doubt they needed any pity, nuns love their lives and choose to follow their calling to serve God and his people in the way of the religious life.
This was my favourite movie when I was very little, like two years of age. Because of this movie, I learned how to operate the VCR at home at that young age. I still love the movie even at 39 years of age. The Sound of Music❤️
“She’s a headache!” “She’s an angel!” “She’s a girl.” I love this exchange. Maria is not perfect, but she’s not awful either. She’d devoted and respectful, yet she wasn’t made to fit in. There’s something free spirited and wonderful about her.
Genius idea of having nuns quarrel through song. To be able to find opportunities to shout opinions frustratedly without suspending belief while still being comedic is one of the reasons this musical is so good.
The final choral segment with all of them singing in harmony is so, so perfect🎶✨️❤ I find myself rewinding it multiple times just so i can sing each part.

Many a thing she ought to understand
