    Great as always.
    Just a consideration. If you are using upgraded/strengthened axles or drive shafts, all you are doing is transferring the weakest point somewhere else in the driveline and usually to a less accessible/costly location (diff centres, transfer/gearbox). For example; it may be preferable to have an axle go, rather than a diff centre (axles can be like fuses for a driveline, sacrificial).

      You're not "transferring" the spot. All twisting/binding forces will be the same everywhere as long as the stronger replacements function the same way as the old ones. If they can take those forces before they will take them still just the same. It's just that those more robust replacements aren't the ones that failed first this time.

    A common failure I see in drivelines, in Canada, is lack of diff breather service. (Snow,ice,salt,mud) People overlook this all the time. $11 part could save thousands of dollars down the road. Found water in many a rear diff. Really like your videos. Keep them coming!

    In regards to strengthened aftermarket parts, be aware, that you are likely transferring the breaking load from the part, which would otherwise fail to another part. You can almost consider some parts as mechanical fuses, like CV Joints. A Broken CV is better than a broken Transmission. Just consider the other parts of the driveline when upgrading and what may become the weak point once you upgrade something else.

  • @MrDudeCZ
    @MrDudeCZ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Ronny, you've hit that nail right on the head. I agree with you 100%. Particularly reverse recovery and cv/u-joints in full lock. I have been asked countless times why I always turn around before pulling anyone. Simply because of the cut of the teeth and also position of the pinion in regards to the diff. In my case forward is stronger. Also as other mention here, keeping that weight down helps quite a bit to fight premature wear and unnecessary damage. I have put quite a bit of steel on my rig, but I always considere thickness of my materials. Not every skid or armor needs to be 10mm thick. And also, when wheeling, I always carry only the absolutely necessary things with me, like recovery gear, spare wheel, basic tools. I don't really do overlanding so I keep to minimum. Love your channel, greetings from far overseas. Martin

  • @wstrater
    @wstrater 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The problem with adding a more durable part is that it may transfer the force to a more expensive part to repair. Breaking a drive shaft is probably a lot cheaper and easier to repair than breaking a gear in the transfer case or differential because you added a really strong drive shaft.

    Another way to weaken the driveline is bigger tires. With bigger tires comes a longer leverage. Your Chanel is awesome Ronny. It didn't take long to become a patreon of yours.

    I found this video useful. How about about a top ten ways on reducing vehicle weight?

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Drill big holes in your chassis.
      Or, don't bolt the whole ARB steel goods catalogue on there. If you ever see an ARB/TJM etc. vehicle outside a store or at a show fully kitted up with everything on there, particularly Cruiser or Patrol wagons, ask them how much it weighs & if it's under legal GVM. You'll either get no response or a very sheepish look as I'd almost guarantee vehicles like this are way overloaded & illegal. The whole industry needs to change from a mindset of fitting bigger & more accessoriess to an approach where vehicles are actually legal to drive on the road. I always find it funny that places like this don't even have facility to weigh your vehicle when fitting suspension (engineering negligence) so the chances of them bolting a heap of steel to your vehicle & knowing it comes in under GVM is almost impossible.

    • @gortnewton4765
      @gortnewton4765 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good points, never even thought about the legal side of GVM. I don't like heavy gear or heavy vehicles and don't subscribe to the Big Iron ideas of 'forget the weight, feel the strength'.... hahahaha. About the only thing heavy I'd bolt to a vehicle is the Bullbar. Nothing on top and keep the center of gravity low as possible, weight low too.

    • @azazeldeath
      @azazeldeath 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a few ways to do that, can do full drift/drag spec and pull anything that isn't required out. Not the best on a 4x4 unless you are planing to do competitions. Or simply pull out things you don't need, have an 8 seater and NEVER use the rear most seats? Pull them out. Have a site box as your storage? Unless you really need that locking capability swap it out for something a lot lighter.
      I found a lot of it is common sense or compromise, I also think 4XOverland has a few very old videos you can check out (to tide you over until Ronny does one).

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, the best thing about GVM was Andrew from 4xOverland binning the 79 build as it was over GVM. You see far too many Utes with massive campers on top crippling them & looking like a Great Dane humping a lame Whippet 😬

    Very interesting video. These modern 4x4 machines are incredible - but given continuous harsh treatment, will all begin to suffer over time. Also seems to remind one to keep things lightweight. We won't ever really get away from that for extended off-road travel (and let's face it, it's great to build killer trucks!), but less weight equals less strain. Keep these videos coming!

    Another thing with CV boots on IFS vehicles, if you're driving in deep snow and have parked your car overnight, before driving it the day after, take a rubber mallet and knock off the ice that may have formed around your CV boots. This will keep the ice from completely destroying your CV boot if you drive off with ice on them.

Love how I get a few videos a week from you instead of 'one a week' as done by the 'other' 4X4 channels. Waiting 7 days for a video and to stay with that channel is wearisome and I lose interest for most part.

    Hey Ronnie, Steve here from SA...a great way to release the tension built up in the driveline s, as you mentioned, slow down, preferably onto a soft surface, select reverse gear and reverse a short distance. This will unwind the tension and you will be able to move the 4WD select lever easily from 4 to 2. The more the tension the longer you will have to reverse, but in general it usually takes me about 10m. Cheers mate.
