    Hi Ronny, as a mechanic in Perth and a 4wd specialist I see heaps of 4wd's everyday with issues related to mud, and not just in brakes, electrics, and so on, but also in diffs and transmission due to inadequate breathers. As for green death, that is a nightmare for everyone and very hard to repair, and a lot of the time the first symptoms don't occur until months after the water ingestion. I actually keep multiple alternators for the KUN series hiluxs in my shed as pretty much every week there is a post on various facebook groups for a person looking for an alternator urgently as most people won't remove and clean the brushes. And your video does a great job showing the best combat for mud is prevention, although not completely effective but inox is a great product to spray on the vehicle, I personally use lanotec steel seal on my 4wd as when it dries it leaves a wax like finish on everything, it doesn't wash off easily either so can last multiple washes before needing to be re-applied.

    Dear Ronny,
    I'm a geologist and have to tell you're doing very well on the mud issue. I never drove through mud in Australia so far - it is on my to-do-list - yet I did it in Sibiria, Africa, Southern America and of course Europe.
    I do not at all like mud - it is not my speciality and I do not like to drive through mud, yet as you pointet out very correctly, sometimes you can't get around to do it.
    And I'm an naval engineer.
    I didn't sleep at class on the issue of corosion.
    As far as I can tell, your video, this video is hitting the nail on the topp as precise as one can get to enterrainingly shortcut lots of the details that tell appart science from journalism.
    If I had to give you a number between 0 and 10 with the 0 to beer-garden-rumors and a 5 to serious jornalism and a 10 to science I had to pick the 8.
    Well done!
    Very well done.
    Best regards from Germany
    Stefan

    One bog hole, 30 seconds of fun, caused me about $25K worth of damage to my 100 series.
    Sunk it halfway up to the doors in sandy silty mud in the middle of nowhere- No way to clean out the radiator, intercooler etc.
    That single bog hole was responsible for:
    Rebuilt engine after the oil overheated, broke down and wrote off every bearing in the engine and scored the crank
    Replacement turbo after its bearing failed
    Rebuilt starter
    Replaced Alternator
    Replaced Clutch- Damage from the sand in the mud chewing the clutch disk up
    Re-seal the gearbox
    Rebuild the transfer case after EVERY single seal on it started to weep from silt getting into the sealing surfaces
    New uni joints all round for silt contamination
    New wheel bearings all round from silt damage
    New brakes all round- Rotors and Pads from damage
    New Handbrake shoes from silt damage
    Full strip down and rebuild of both diffs due to water contamination and silt getting into the pinion seals and ruining them
    Replacement winch motor due to water ingress not being caught and it rusting
    Not to mention hundreds of my hours doing the work, cleaning the thing, constantly finding new niggles and issues related to it. I'll drive around bog holes at every opportunity now unless i absolutely HAVE to go through it- And then i'll send a sacrificial friend through first!

      Does insurance not cover any of it?

    • @rossrhodes1963
      @rossrhodes1963 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ollie620 that all depends on where you were when it happened and depth of bog hole/ water crossing. Had one person in the club take the wrong line. Only the front half of the vehicle was in the bog hole. High enough to seep through the door seals though. Insurance company just said it’s a write off. Due to unknown electrical issues that may occur later on. She spent months fighting the insurer over that. They finally reached an agreement the insurer would pay to fix everything that could found wrong with the vehicle at time of repair. Anything that went wrong with the electrical system after a three month period. Would be on her to fix. The vehicle was then devalued by the insurer. Due to that one mistake she couldn’t insure the vehicle with anyone above half its market value. Lessons in that watch what others are doing. Check your lines and definitely check those depths of mud holes and puddles.

    • @ferremit
      @ferremit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ollie620 most insurance doesn’t cover acts of stupidity- plus they’ll look at it and go “it’s a hole surrounded by dry ground for 30m either side- you chose to drive into it”
      And as also mentioned, they’d write the car off for $25K of damage, and the other issue is it’s taken 4-5 years for all the issues to crop up

    My alternator, Jeep XJ, quit twice after getting stuck in silty mud. The first time I replaced it but the second time, I took it apart. With Jeep alternators, the silt makes the brushes stick in the plastic holder. The manufacturer even cast a slot so you can use a small screwdriver to release the brushes. Worked fine with some WD40 after I put it back together.

    • @useryggfdcc
      @useryggfdcc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alternators are easy to service if you can find the parts.
      Back in my home shithole country, South Africa that was a common thing to do back in the 70's and 80's.
      Here in Canada now it's much harder to find parts.
      Common parts need replacement were bushes and front/ rear bearings.
      Check charge voltage, 14.3 volt, good to go.

    I used to ride my motorcycle in the swamp every weekend with my buddies. Brake pads had to be replaced every 3 weeks. Wheel bearings made it about 2 months. Fortunately my wheel bearings had lifetime warrantees. I had 2 sets. One set was always in for warranted replacement. Fairly cheap for a motorcycle, loads of fun, wouldn’t change it. My truck has never seen mud, and I hope it never does. Way more expensive and cumbersome.

    Another great set of tips, Ronnie. And so many variations on the theme on mud.
    My dads little Ford 4x4 Ranger back in the 80s was covered in mud after a week-long hunting trip. It was the most and only 'mudding' either of us or the truck had done.
    Got home, put truck thru standard car wash once, and called it a week.
    6mos later, that truck was wandering all over the road holding the wheel steady. The mud got in to the wheel bearings, tie rods, suspension bushes, and especially the brake slide pins and destroyed them that quickly. Lesson here is the underside needs prudent yet pedantic cleaning with pressure after mud runs. I don't think the underside of dad's Ranger ever saw direct water cleaning, which clearly lead to the issues imo. Well that and mid-80's Ford quality. (lol it was a good truck).

    Rotors...in a FB group I belong to for Nissans, a few people always chime in about getting drilled/slotted rotors. Are you taking your 4x4 to the racetrack? No, so those slots and holes are where you accumulate debris. Then you can't stop on the trail. At least at this point, enough people have pointed that out. Oh, and where I live, we have clay. When soaked, almost like driving on ice. Love your videos, Ronny.

    Probably one of your best informative videos yet Ronny! I used to work for the army and service and repair mechanical components on ABRAMS tanks and ASLAVS along with APC'S and ACV'S. The Australian military use lanolin underneath all army vehicles. I used to apply it on all components after rebuilding them. Mud is death. It really is. So many heavily rusted components that most times when rebuilding a strut or control arm that weighs 250 kilos i would replace most components because of how rusted they were. That's why a lot of military vehicles use mechanical seals which resist contamination better than your conventional rubber lip seals. Lanolin is excellent at creating an effective barrier against corrosive substances like salt and mud.
    But a lot of people with 4 wheel drives have a very distorted perception about what a 4 wheel drive is supposed to do. It's not as much as they think. It's just a car....like any other car. And mud will kill it much quicker.

    Love the video! Wish it was up 3 months earlier after I went into Toolangi state forest ( Vic ) at Not much Help Track and flooded the Lux and cost me over $5.5k In repairs! Tip make sure you cheek your diff Breathers as mine moved onto my Exhaust and burnt wholes into them

    So there are some of Americans who don't live near the big wide rocky expanse, and instead have to deal with this kind of fun. Thank you so much for making videos like this!
