Paul whitehouse's character deserves to be up there with the best, if this was a full series and not just a sketch it would be recognised as one of the greatest comedy characters in british history
As an Operating Department Practitioner of 35 years, I get 100% of all the 'in' gags. This pair have really done their research and rarely, if ever get stuff wrong. Absolute comedy genius.
Sheridan is the more inquisitive and extroverted of the pair. Charles is more reserved but extremely perceptive and sharp. What a fantastic pair of characters. They seem like genuine colleagues and capable professionals.
My God, how sharply observed and recreated/acted by the pair..a simply spot on sketch/es of our educated and skilled surgeons characters and foibles, delicious.
I think this sketch is an amazing study and observation of the 'Toff Upper crust' simply brilliant execution from the two of them. I'd have to say that this goes beyond a sketch into a realm of hitherto unknown territory of entertainment, surely a classic work of art.
Yes... superb. The connection and timing between them - their lifestyle comments are from " where other folk live " ..... aside the comedy, the character acting to top class.
I agree.... Paul is marvelous...but Harry is the perfect foil.... Precision comedy..... They complement each other in many sketches/characters.... None better...... Nor shall they will be in say, what you, 40, 45 years...Mmm?

Just fantastic to watch. Sheridan is an incredible character. So brilliantly brought to life. You forget it’s Paul Whitehouse. Wish he took this character forward into longer appearances. This and Rowley Birkin QC are the best comedic characters ever created. Fantastic stuff
Excellent! Not like that any more though. These were the lot who were at the very beginning of the NHS, all retired mid to late 90's. Never seen it before, so many thanks to Chris.
Having worked in Theatres at the _Portland Hospital for Women & Children,_ I can confirm this is absolutely *spot on.* Bravo, especially Paul Whitehouse.
This is the horror of our meritocratic world: there are indeed existing posh, highly educated, well-connected but super clever, super competent and, horror of horrors, ethical and really, really nice people. I once met a surgeon in the USA who had a phd in engineering, had been a fast jet pilot in the Air Force and who also managed a large hospital extremely well in his spare time. He had five children, had been happily married for “40, 45 years” to an ex-beauty queen, and an exceptionally nice person. I realised then that nature does sometimes gives out all the prizes.
My first job in the 80s was working in a shop owned by a character just like this, with the brylcreemed hair and everything. I once came in on a summers day with my jumper tied round my waist and he said my attire was 'rather more becoming of the chaps on the terraces at Stamford Bridge than someone facing the public'. Paul Whitehouse is a genius character actor but I do love how Harry plays Charles in this too. We just arent making comedy this brilliant anymore

'Back to Life' on the BBC and 'This way up' on Channel 4 being recent examples. I meant I dont see the depth of writing, acting, range and just sheer class out there that Harry and Paul have. Funny is funny but find alot of stuff a bit one dimensional and lacking in depth, apart from Partridge (which has gone of the boil in recent years). But what do I know? Opinions are like arseholes, we've all got one.

Their 'minds are racing' how on earth do Charles & Sheridan, I mean Harry & Paul remember their complex & rapid fire dialogue, they're so professional at this skit. I suppose its rehearsal & repetition gets it sounding just right, for that camera take. Good on ya chaps.

I don't know how many times I watched these clips but every time I see more and more to laugh at. Absolute exponents of character comedy which only Paul and Harry could pull off. Situation comedy at it's very best.
This popped up on my feed in 2024 and it's absolutely hilarious. Good to know great comedy will live forever on the interweb and will come up to tickle us from time to time.
My grandfather was a consultant surgeon in NHS & private practise and he spoke like these two. So for me, what's funny is the fact they banter right through the op.; my mother says their speech wasn't considered too posh for drs & surgeons 40 years ago.
My Wife was a Matron of the local ICU and assured me these characters really do exist ..one in particular listened to Beethoven’s Marche de Funebre whilst Operating ( it turned out the patient was a Funeral Director whom the Surgeon knew !)
Absolutely delicious stuff! You couldn't ask for better comedic material than that and yet is born from reality. My, what a rich little country we are..😉
when i was 14 i had a ingrown toenail operation, which i was awake during. It was a proper surgical environment, me, the doctor, 3 nurses, while he played Steve Winwood, Higher Love

Although Charles says he does National Health work - I would imagine it would be really difficult to get on one of his lists. Not sure that going private would do it either - probably it’s who you know .
I think these surgeon sketches are my favourite creation from Harry and Paul, nicely written and delivered. I so wish they could have fleshed it out into something more.
Harry and Paul is such an under rated show. To me, it's better than their earlier shows and is pin sharp satire! Edit: When I say 'under-rated', I do realise that the show was on prime time TV, and reasonsbly popular, but it doesn't seem to be *anywhere* near as popular as any of their previous shows (e.g. The Fast Show, Harry Enfield's T.V. Programme). I think this is the best material they have done and the characters and satire are spot on. The old Dr's are great personas amongst an array of great personas.
