  • Recipe here: www.joyofbakin... Stephanie Jaworski of Joyofbaking.com demonstrates how to make Date Squares. Date Squares are also called Date Slices or even Matrimonial Bars. They consist of two buttery layers of an oatmeal shortbread crust that are sandwiched together with pureed dried dates scented with vanilla. I just love their wonderfully sweet yet earthy flavor. Absolutely perfect with a hot cup of tea.

    I love the way you don’t assume that everyone has all the right equipment and give other options. Don’t know how you don’t have 10m subscribers as you make everything seem achievable even for beginner bakers. Thanks for all the tips.

    Loved your recipe and video, Stephanie.
    I've made these dates squares for years.
    My only twists on your recipe are to cook the dates with 50% water and 50% fresh orange juice. It's because I like the orange presence with the dates. I use less orange zest but keep the vanilla flavouring.
    I don't puree the date mixture because, as a personal preference, I enjoy the texture of the date filling as is.

    When I was a kid, my mom always made "Betty Crocker" date bar from a box mix, it was quick & easy. Everyone loved them. They no longer make the box mix unfortunately. I love they way your bars look. You always make it easy and enjoyable to make your recipes too. I will have to make these. P.S. It's always a treat to see your beautiful dog!

    I haven't had date bars in decades. I remember, as a kid, my mother would go to the bakery and I got to choose one free item...the lady always wanted to give me a cookie but I always chose the date bar, they were my absolute favorite. I ordered dates and as soon as they arrive I'm making this.

    I have a clamshell container of dates in the fridge right now. Think this will be my next baking adventure; they’re so easy to make. Probably will use almond extract (since I’m out of vanilla) and stir in some toasted walnuts in the date mixture. Thank you for sharing.

    Thank you ma'am for this typical Canadian treat recipe.
    As per Ayurveda, eating dates warms up your body, so eating it in winters along with nuts and seeds is a good idea.
    As for "matrimonial cookies" , my guess is , either it used to be served exclusively at weddings in those days, or, it is called so due to "matrimony" between the dates and the oatmeal :)
    Best regards !

    Nicely done. We make pastry stuffed with dates in the Middle East but usually they are closed . Shaped circular or like a roll or like Cornish pasty but smaller.They are known as ma’mool or klecha. You can find ma’mool in most Arabic shops in the west. We certainly have them here in London . A little bit of cardamom powder would add such a lovely flavour.

      Thank you for replying . Indeed it would. Cardamom powder is so versatile . It adds such a different dimension to foods sweet or savoury . As I added in my previous comment , ma’mool which is a dates stuffed pastry is available in Arabic shops. I am certain you can find them in the us too. We have them here in London . I’m sure you will like them . Thanks again.

    Stephanie, you're so precise with your recipes and measurements which I love. I wish all bakers used a scale! However, you never specify the type of oven in your videos or recipes - convection (fan forced) or conventional oven. This can greatly effect the temperature. Will you start adding this to your recipes?

    • @joyofbaking
      @joyofbaking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use either type of oven. I don't say temperature differences because in some ovens there is a correction required and some not. Newer ovens don't require a correction for convection. My current oven doesn't require a correction. Check the manual of your oven to see if a correction for convection is required.
