I would say the traffic is bad in Gainesville, even when there is really nothing going on at UF that weekend. Also, the price of gas in Gainesville was higher than in most other cities in Florida. Plus, the summer heat is miserable there (no wind, so the hot, humid air just stagnates). Finally, the location. It seems like you are a long drive from anywhere in Gainesville. It really is kind of isolated from the rest of Florida. That's what I remember as the negatives from my time there as a student.

You are 100% right about the heat… summer is no joke right now 🥵 Send a cool breeze please!

Not only are property taxes higher in Alachua County, but ALL other costs are higher inside Alachua County.

I'd like to add additional facts:
    6) Extremely high crime, and don't expect the police to assist you. Tangible evidence doesn't lie, people do.
    7) The city "commissioners" demonstrate an absolute lack of concern for the overall health, welfare and safety of the community. Again, tangible evidence doesn't lie, people do.
    8) Among the worst in healthcare providers. Tangible evidence doesn't lie.
Overall, it is a despicable City even more so for the elderly, children and disabled.
There is absolutely no rational reason to move to Gainesville based on tangible evidence.

I too moved to Gainesville to attend UF, got a job, and stayed. In my 40+ years of living in Gainesville I have heard, repeatedly, the same old justification for the high rate of taxation in Alachua County/City of Gainesville - it’s because UF does not pay property taxes. I say that’s just another load of BS!
What about the taxes generated by the thousands of unhomesteaded rental houses and apartments occupied by the tens of thousands of UF Students, Faculty, and Staff that support the inflated budgets of local government. Without the university Gainesville, in my opinion, would resemble someplace like Starke or Live Oak. Both examples, in may respects, would be an improvement when compared to the current decaying state of the City of Gainesville.
The real issue is not about the amount of tax revenue generated. Instead, the real issue is the continuous fiscally flawed decisions implemented by the the self-serving, low quality, and shear stupid local political “gang” that has a stranglehold on local elected representation.
Alachua County and the City of Gainesville both have proven time and again that stupid and/or corrupt leadership can, has, and will continue to waste or destroy any potential benefits provided to them by the presence of the huge university revenue stream.

I moved here from South Florida, (originally born in PA) - for me there isn't much to complain about. We don't really get hit with hurricanes or terrible weather compared to other places in Florida I've lived. Work is so so, but I mostly work from home and a job overnight so I'm not sure for others. We got to St. Augustine Beach pretty much every month, or Palm Coast. That drive isn't so bad compared to when I lived in states where a beach just wasn't an option. I also live in the Duck Pond area very close to downtown - the traffic can kind of be bad on game day and other events but have you ever driven in downtown Miami or tried to get from Coconut Grove to North Miami Beach when during rush hour or when there's an accident? lol - this is a walk in the park compared to that. I have two children and there are tons of playgrounds, parks, nature trails, free museums and things to do. Farms, the Krishna temple, temple of the universe, the springs just north of us. Sure we pay a little more in gru and taxes but try living in Naples or Miami. I've lived in Boca Raton, the Keys, Naples, West Palm etc. and so far this has been the most calming, friendly relaxing place I've lived in FL - I just wish it didn't get so cold and it would be perfect.

It's all about context. I moved here from Chicago 3 years ago, and if you look at every one of these issues, Gainesville is a vast improvement. Chicago's taxes are ridiculous, the traffic on any day is crazy, it's not just college kids, you're close to Lake Michigan (Ok, that's better), ComEd (the utility company up there) rakes you over the coals just as much. I love it here!

Horrid drivers. Incredibly rude and ignorant.
Cutting people off at merges, ignoring crosswalks, passing buses.
As a matter of fact I was almost hit in a crosswalk by some lady passing a stopped bus this morning. It is illegal to pass a stopped bus on a two lane road period.
It’s done nothing but get worse traffic wise. More and more pedestrians and cyclists hit.
I recently decided to bicycle to work because it’s only 6 miles one way. I’ve almost been hit many times. I now wear a helmet cam. So hopefully if I’m run down there will be footage. We need more cameras at intersections and on buses and more police.

You are talking about the out of towner students not from Florida when you talk about bad drivers here. All these videos depicting bad drivers in Florida are the Yankee snowbirds and students bringing your natural lack of driving ability here for us to have to deal with. That is a proven fact also, check the rest of the state where it is not infected by northerners and you see no traffic problems. St Augustine on the other hand is a US catastrophy for drivers all over the world not knowing WTF to do behind a wheel.
