Peter jackson fully admits he was completely lost and in over his head while directing the hobbit trilogy after the first director ditched. it was still a cool trilogy.
The last movie of the hobbit trilogy is much better than the second in my opinion. Much due to the necessary break Jackson took to gain the correct vision distorted by the previous director.
Dustcovers on the first set you show with the Readers Companion are the designs Tolkien made for the covers of the original printing but where never used because of cost and complexity. This is first time they have been used for an edition of Lord of the Rings.
+TimeAndChance They're in my wishlist but as they're a rather costly investment I've held off. I did peruse them in my uni library and enjoyed what I read. So possibly… at some point.
As a serious Tolkien nerd, those books are quite awesome. However they do make me sad because Tolkien started several interesting novels before they were abandoned.
Hey, any idea to where or whom I can purchase the Lord Of The Rings boxset (tree of gondor edition) from?! Please and thanks! Awesome collection btw! 😁
I've got a first Canadian edition, printed in November of 1965, copy of the two towers in hardcover. It's referred to as one of the Ballantine books and has the cool artwork on the cover. I can't seem to find much info on it on the internet, because all the Ballantine copies that I've seen are all paperback. some info on the book would be much appreciated.
Thank you for sharing this, and showing us such a great book collection. I feel so glad to find out that I'm not alone in my rambles through Middle Earth. I completely agree that the film of The Hobbit is a mess, and not at all the story I know and love - as others have commented, Peter Jackson felt compelled to make another epic to 'top' his L.o.R., but that is not the nature of The Hobbit. A little anecdote: I was visiting some friends in the West Midlands in England, and we went for a walk - 'a ramble' as the English say - and looking out across some small hills and fields, I said, 'You know something, this reminds me of the Shire a little bit...' My friend said, 'Yes! Tolkien lived in this area for a while!' Another note: I love the illustrations of Pauline Baynes, an illustrator that Tolkien himself actually approved of, and the little box of four books you have, as I do. My first Lord of the Rings was tattered paberback but it had Pauline's cover illustration...so it has a special place for me. A lovely website has been created for Pauline's works, so do take a look. You really ought to get the book of all Tolkien's own illustrations and drawings, which includes early attempts, maps and insignia of Feanor and others of the Silmarillion!
great collection! I'm especially interested in lotr box set. What's your opinion on it? Is the paper nice? the font size? Are there any illustrations??? i don't own any Tolkien hardcovers yet and I'm thinking maybe this box or maybe some other edition?
Love your collection. Along with collecting the books I collect most of the reference material as well. If you enjoy the reference material get the The Languages of Tolkien's Middle Earth and Tolkien's World from A to Z if you don't already have them. Believe it or not the The Orgins of Tolkien's Middle Earth for Dummies is a great reference book. The author Greg Harvey did his homework and is a huge Tolkien fan.
Totally agree The lord of the rings movies are the best. But the hobbit movies missing the soul of the original movie. Other note Why I am the only one including beowulf to the Tolkien video collection
The 75th edition with the Tolkien designed covers, where did you order? They're a pretty penny on Book Depository, so far the best price for Aus, but I'm terrified they'll be banged up, even just the casing damaged would be upsetting.Lovely collection, you're inspiring me to get some figurines! x
+Jessica Foster I preordered mine through Amazon as they were the cheapest by far. I think I paid around $75-$90 for them? I can't remember exactly as it was over a year ago. Good luck hunting!
Nice collection! I have to grab that edition of the Silmarillion. This is a really inane, nit-picking question but does your new edition of Lord of the Rings have nice paper (acid free?) and good binding? I'd like to buy a copy to last me for the rest of my life and these seem like a good buy. However, I'm wondering if I have to step up to a crazy purchase like the Folio Society or something.
Bruce Burns I'd recommend the three volume hardback edition shown at 2:50, there are myriad of beautiful one volume editions but I find them very uncomfortable to read. You can purchase the books separately, each for ~25€ . That's what I did cause I wasn't that much interested in the reader's companion, which you can get for about 35€
Thanks a lot! I was actually beginning to arrive at a similar conclusion. I do realise that Tolkien originally intended Lord of the Rings to be a single volume, but I think the practicality of reading them in bed or in a living room chair precludes this somewhat. Moreover, Tolkien obviously considered the three volume idea seriously enough to come up fantastic dust-jacket artwork for each individual book, all of which would go quite well with his watercolours of the Hobbit and Silmarillion.
Bruce Burns You're welcome! I totally agree with you, yes, I'm aware that Tolkien wanted lotr to be published in one hardcover volume ( he disliked the these days upcoming paperbacks ), but due to the length of the book these editions aren't the most comfortable to read. The classic hardback edition is available for 35£, yes; three volume editions are more expensive but it's an lifelong investment :)
Amazing collection. The Tolkien Treasury looks fantastic, I need to purchase it. :) Also, I can absolutely relate to your opinion about Hobbit movies, I haven't even seen the last one (and I don't intend to). It's almost offending what he did with the story.
Strange, i absolutley love the hobbit movies and the book. I have watched them like 283727 times and find them really good. I think they got the soul of the book in the movies great. Never understod why people hate them so much. 🤷🏼♀️☀️
Nice collection! I didn't like The Hobbit "Trilogy" either. Desolation of Smaug was the worst. Unexpected Journey was okay, except for the ending. Battle of Five Armies had some redeeming qualities.
Wow, your whole collection is absolutely stunning! The cloth bound ones are especially beautiful; it's a shame they don't sell them anymore. Btw, just wanted to let you know that your thumbnail has a typo. ;)
Ok call tf down with that “travesty” shit…the hobbit is a result of Peter Jackson coming into directing well after production had started with Guillermo Del Toro…and he did a pretty good job with all the stress he was under…yes it pales in comparison to the lord of the rings trilogy but then again the same can be said about the books
I love the Hobbit movies. I'll never get the hate for them. I did go through a period of feeling very critical towards them but then realized I was nitpicking and started to enjoy them again for what they are. No they aren't perfect, they have flaws but I'm able to look past them now and i absolutely adore them and along with LOTR (perfect imo) watch them all the time! Oh and I have both theatrical and extended but I mostly watch the extended. For me so much better.
I LOVE seeing collections. I haven't watched the Hobbit movies yet but do own them so we'll see how that goes... What did you think we're the worst points? The treasury books are my favourite out of all of them, I think! I love owning multiple editions of my favourites. I have collections of Harry Potter and Little Women right now. :) I might eventually get around to videos!
+literarydiversions th-cam.com/video/jrGhHQ8nV5s/w-d-xo.html It's old but I did a WHOLE reaction video on it after I first saw it. Ultimately I feel like the focus and heart of the book were taking out of the movies for the sake of action and continuity with the Lord of the Rings movies.
+exlibris whats with all the hobbit hate? ive read the books and have a very big tolkien collection and i enjoyed the movies, there were some bad moments where pj ruined it but overall it was great.
Azhar_LOLZ they do, why does everything have to have this glow, the cgi is meant to blend in with reality not warp reality into this ugly looking world, the beautiful vista's of new zealand were more than enough to fill the audience with wonder, to question is this real, less is more.
I've got a tattoo of the original Fellowship book cover on my leg. I've read all the books plenty of times, seen LOTR over 100 times. The Hobbit movies suck just man. They're ok...ish... Not really. Watch any LOTR movie, followed by any Hobbit movie. One film will be perfect, and one will be a slow, boring computer animation Jackson was unhappy with. I wanted to like them, we all did. But my mom thought LOTR would be some fantasy gore movie she'd hate. Fourteen years later, her cats are named Merry and Pippin and they're her favorite movies of all time . She never saw the second Hobbit.
And I really love LOTR films! 😍😍😍 I've just rewatched them on TV. I like them much more, than the LOTR books. Excuse me, have you caught a cold? You sound like this, especially on low notes of voice, hoarse.
I consider foolish people who buy books just to have them in their own collection and don’t read them immediately! So why the heck did you buy them? The reading first, then comes the collection factor.
Your pronouncing Sauron as Sore-on and Smith of Wootton Major as Woodcotton Major makes me question the appropriateness of your decision to publicise your celebration of Tolkien Reading Day. That being said I agree with you that The Hobbit films were a travesty. Only thing worse than them is that horrendous Shadow of Mordor game.
Just played Shadow of Mordor and he's right it was trash, it became dull and repetitive and the story breaks the canon, and the canon breaking was lame, trash like the ring slipping off Sauron's finger and Celebrimbor taking it was pathetic, the final boss was a joke too just button press laughable, only thing I liked was the statue of Sauron with the 9 kings on a leash and the Tower of Sauron sequence, how boring was the orc promotion system too, the dlc was a whole world of shite the Celebrimbor one even worse than the already naff Hunt dlc massive disappointment after people hyping it for years will wait a while to attempt the sequel. I agree with the Hobbit films being a travesty really annoyed me the mispronouncing of Smaug throughout in particular.
Not often do you find several comments in a row that are all retarded. There's no such thing as a "true" Tolkein fan, or a "true" fan of anything. You can enjoy something any way you damn well please. Get off your high horses, you aren't better than one another.
Tolkien has to be the only author I know of who has his own insignia on the spine of his books. Like him or hate him, the man has style.
Who hates him?
Napoleon Lovecraft Prince has got one too. Just kidding of course.
nice harry potter reference!

The Hobbit has to be one of the few movie adaptations where you can read the book faster than you can watch the movies.
Peter jackson fully admits he was completely lost and in over his head while directing the hobbit trilogy after the first director ditched. it was still a cool trilogy.
Nes Nej Wtf are you talking about. Lorth was poop to
u fucking what m8
I enjoyed it even though it had a couple things it could improve on.
PapaJake You’re insane.
I really wished del toro could’ve finished his version of the series. I’m sure at least visually it would’ve been amazing
The last movie of the hobbit trilogy is much better than the second in my opinion. Much due to the necessary break Jackson took to gain the correct vision distorted by the previous director.

You pronounced Sauron and Smaug wrong, although it’s a cool collection though

I love the 2013 cloth bound set. Super rare.
Are you considering getting the History of Middle Earth books vol. 1 -12 at some point? They certainly are scholarly & certainly not for everyone.
+TimeAndChance They're in my wishlist but as they're a rather costly investment I've held off. I did peruse them in my uni library and enjoyed what I read. So possibly… at some point.
+exlibris You can them cheap on Amazon and some at Barnes and Noble.
As a serious Tolkien nerd, those books are quite awesome. However they do make me sad because Tolkien started several interesting novels before they were abandoned.
I did enjoy the movies, yet I think the book was way different and better than them
are the contents of all lotr book editions same?🤔.. I don't understand it🤷🏻♂️.. Plz reply me someone who knows about it🙏🏻...

Totally agree
The lord of the rings movies are the best. But the hobbit movies missing the soul of the original movie. Other note

I have a special respect for Tolkien and his books and no author can take his first spot Atleast for me
The fan edit is the hobbit book, you will love it!
For everyone who would like to read the books or just own them I recently found all of these books for around 3.99 on thriftbooks
Watch the Fan Edits of the Hobbit. The Bilbo Edition especially is very good.
Bela coleção...Parabéns!!! Qual destes produtos é o seu precioso?!? rs
Shouldn't the tree of Gondor have seven stars? It has nine on that LOTR cover
the reader was a ballentine softback with all the stuff in your tree and leaf plus adventures of tom bombadil and farmer giles, and all in one book.
Amazing

I'm so glad someone agrees that Peter Jackson trashed the Hobbit.
I love most of the cast, but agreed, Peter Jackson messed it up completely

How DARE you insult The Hobbit films! They were absolutely beautiful and gave a great insight to the journey and it's characters.
they were utter shit are you thick?
I haven't seen any of the movies. Why watch a movie when you can read the original text in Tolkien's own words and create your vision.
So you don't watch any book movie adaptions?
