    I saw them live a couple of weeks ago. They're a bunch of absolute goofballs, there's not a shred of ego among them. They're completely genuine and they're doing what they were born to do, how could anyone not love that?

    It's so insane how clear it is to hear when someone truly love playing their instruments. Not just going through the motions to play the songs. You can hear in every single of one these girls' way of playing that they love this.
    Especially that drummer. I love her!

    What I love about Kanami's riffs is that she'll start off with something you've heard a hundred times before and you'll think she's going the expected, clichéd direction, but instead she highjacks it and goes into new, unexpected territory. Brilliant!

    I saw them in Maryland and Boston. I was trying to follow Kanami’s hands….. I could not do it, her hands move so fast. Incredible guitarist, they are all the top echelon of musicians.

    The best interview I’ve found, so far, is on a Japanese TV show, ‘Gold Rush #73 & 74.’ It has English subtitles.
    FYI: Jimmy Page saw BM and was so impressed with Akane, drummer, asked to meet her back stage.
    Misa, bass, writes all of her parts in BM’s songs. A chant of, “Misa, Misa, Misa,” is common at shows.
    They have rapport with their fans unlike any other I’ve seen. The show I saw during this recent US tour had 2 intermission. One of them is Omanijni where Miku has her magic spell time. The other one was Saiki sensei and Kanami teaching the crowd some Japanese words.

    These ladies are one of the hardest working bands on the planet. They push each other and work as a team. Their live shows are about as high energy as it gets and their stage show is as entertaining as can be. Their lead vocalist is every bit as talented as the rest of the group. The only complaint I've ever heard is that their earlier albums are over compressed and make for difficult listening. But their live videos are much better. Their story is amazing.

    I'm 75 and have been following rock since the mid-to-late 50's and have seen and heard them all, and this is the best rock instrumental I've ever heard, bar none. Back in the early 60's with the beginning of surf rock there were a lot of instrumentals from the likes of the Ventures and the Surfaris and The Rip Chords. And over in England The Shadows were an excellent instrumental group around the same time. But at some point, sadly, it died out. It was great when I first heard Band-Maid, and especially Onset. I was very impressed. I have to do a deep dive on From Now On to see what other kind of sorcery Kanamincho has come up with. She really is a savant when it comes to composition.

    • @mikeat2637
      @mikeat2637 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And when we get to Kanami's solo, there is such a southern rock vibe to it, like Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

    • @jz55859
      @jz55859 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not to mention Misa is a world class bass player. I'm a 67 year old rock guitarist and understand the absolute need for a great foundation. She is not only a Effin metronome but shreds while she's at it. She's a true virtuoso on Bass.

    • @mikeat2637
      @mikeat2637 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jz55859 You hit the nail on the head. Misa is a virtuoso for sure. I read somewhere that she has a background in the cello, and I think that her exposure in that milieu only makes her a better bassist. When you learn the classical approach, I feel it gives the musician a very solid background on how to blend their work into the overall sound of the group. I can't think of any better power trio than Kanami, Misa and Akane, and it shows in every song they do. And the little pigeon, po, has slotted into the exact spot she is needed and has become a very fine guitarist for someone who had never played one before. I daresay that at present, they are the perfect group from all standpoints, composing, lyrics, sheer power of artistry, and that one thing that is most important, they are pretty much joined at the hip and work as one unit.

    The best rhythm section I have heard in a very long time. I taught myself to play the drums as a teenager and have always regretted not getting lessons. Even now in my mid-50s, I would love to have a fraction of Akane's ability.

  • @stevekane4922
    @stevekane4922 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I have come to believe that akane really is the best drummer in the world. When Jimmy Page complimented her is because, like Bonham she is only relevant in the context of the band. His solos are celebrated but I don't think the band cared much for them except for a smoke break, what was irreplaceable about him was that thing that achi has which is to be a part of the overall instrument that kanami forces and coaxes the band to become.
    They each slot together like a beautiful puzzle but without a drummer as extraordinarily musical as akane they would not be able to stretch themselves as they do. The others are outrageously good musicians and kanami a composer and producer in a million but without achi the centre would not hold. She is like that in the team too, the others are all more than slightly mad but achi is the antipsycotic - too much in the groove to be unhinged but soo gifted. In the beginning when they would tour Japan in a hired hiace van, she would book the gigs and rehearsals and make damn sure everything happened - they chose her as bandleader at that crucial time that made them into a real rockband.
    Don't ever let anyone tell you that they're not a real rockband like the legends of the sixties and seventies, they've paid their dues. No they are not a product of the Japanese music industry that everyone says they understand and you don't. Achi symbolises that. She may not do virtuoso 10 minute solos, BAND-MAID don't do that because they are a band and not a bunch of insecure musicians.
    How many drummers spend weeks video ing their technique from all angles to make it more efficient?

    There are many instrumental only versions of most of their songs floating around. I bring this up because I find the vocals act as a leavening agent, masking how hard the music is. Their music is just flat out killer. An interesting oddity is their cover of a Slipknot song, done as a off the cuff livestream some years back.

    This is more intense than in-person. The cinematics are out of this world. I've seen Kanami perform this live up-close (on her side), but I always have these images in my mind. I have this on Blu-Ray. In fact, I have a few of the Blu-Ray albums (unopened), but no Blu-Ray player (Haven't had the chance to go shopping for one). So, I rely on YT rxns, and going to see them live (that's my excuse to the wife 🤓). Once she finds out that I'm going to Tokyo Garden (We in LA), she may just get me one for Christmas and I'll be sleeping on the couch, Po! 🦍 Look for Band Maid 2015 Music Gold Rush interview #73/74 by

      Kanami does most of the backing track herself. Back when this was recorded, she probably did all of the backing track. Currently, ALL of the Ladies contribute to the backing track. Vocally and on other instruments. I've read several rumors that since Saiki has been learning piano and guitar, Kanami had her on keyboards for the backing tracks of at least one of the songs on the Unleash EP, while Kanami, Akane and MISA all did piano on other tracks. And this is just a RUMOR, all of the Ladies are after Miku to get her to start learning piano again.

    “Onset” is their 1st instrumental, “From Now On” is the newest. There’s another instrumental in the middle, relatively recent, called “No Holding Back” which you should definitely check out. Akane is amazing on drums. Her drumming is always in the groove, and she is so clever with her pedal work and fills. Around 2017, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, caught one of their shows and went backstage to complement Akane on her drumming. Misa & Akane are the best bass/drums combo going. As you have seen, Band Maid’s live performances are just as good and usually better than the originals. Good review.

    If you would like to hear some of Akane's best work, try their other great instrumental 'without holding back' - or maybe the best drumming, in the oft overlooked incredible 'honkai'.
    Also of note is the amazing black hole (the live that comes with manners) - but imo it stands out even more for the incredible bass work all the way through if you pay attention.
    p.s A few of these like Honkai do not have an official live or MV - but please dont react to the poor quality fan recordings. Its much better to react to the album version with just the music.
    The only live ive seen of honkai is pretty bad audio and it spoils it imo. The just music album version in on YT like probably most of their songs.

Also on TH-cam if you look for Band-Maid Music Gold Rush, you will find parts one and two, which there are several copies, ut one has the translation embeded the other you will have to use the close captions.

    Lead guitar Kanami Tōno actually plays through a Mesa, rhythm guitar Miku Kobato plays through the EVH, and bass MISA plays through the Orange. There's a lot to like about these instrumentals but one thing that stands out to me is how Kanami's lead _becomes_ the vocal, especially in the choruses. Both she and MISA are very stylish in their playing. They phrase their lines very much like a human would say (or sing) them; they connect words into phrases, then they take a breath. I know there are some hotshots out there that can play more notes, but *how* they play the notes is what blows me away. Very very tasteful.

    Nice. Going back to the beginning is always a good idea when there is a lot to digest. This was a pretty sweet set for a reaction video. Kanami, lead guitar and song writer, develops the backing tracks. She studied piano since before grade school. I believe she did the final version in the studio for older songs. Not sure if she created/recorded the backing track for From Now On, but I'm pretty sure it was her music. The others apparently wanted an instrumental with an orchestral backing track and she obliged.

    There is an interview with Herman Li with Mjku and Kanami with subtitles
    Any Maids serving (as they call their songs) ROCKS!!! The ladies are in their early 30s now and have been rocking for almost 10 years.
    Try Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage (the label was about let them go when this happened in 2015), Freedom, Onset, From now on, Hate? Are all great tracks and they have an extensive back catalogue of over 100 tracks.
    Welcome Masters and Princesses to the 5 Band-Maid members:
    SAIKI Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. The youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock front women... or front men!
    MIKU Kobato (Me-Ku), "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals and lyricist. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. She couldn’t play when she formed the band and was tutored by Kanami.
    KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more!
    AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
    MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
    Plenty of Solo work from Misa, Kanami and Akane
