    Not many bands manage to thrive with the same members for over a decade. While they built a solid reputation in Japan, the world has finally recognized their talent and charm. Thank you for supporting BAND-MAID. P.S. I really liked your reaction. Your sparkling eyes, smile, and composed way of speaking and gesturing are evidence that you're a 'good person.' ✨🥰🤘

    Welcome to Band-Maid! For awesome art in a music video, try "Influencer" filmed outdoors, and for an MV shot indoors with animation, try "Unleash". If you dig MV with pyrotechnics, try "Shambles", "Warning", or "The Non-Fiction Days".

    Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up.
    Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. The idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!
    And happy birthday Akane! The happiest drummer on the planet!

    They performed "Thrill" in the middle of a 3 and half hour concert at Yokohama Arena on Thanksgiving weekend. They killed it. The members of this band push each other and set stretch goals for themselves; you won't find a more professional band on the planet. They are THE live act. They do play to a click track and use backing tracks, but their is no doubt they play live. I saw them twice last May: at a small club in Detroit and an outdoor festival in Columbus, Ohio. They're just THAT incredibly good.
    Check out "Puzzle" live at Tokyo Garden Theater and "Dice/HATE?" at lollapaloosa 2023.
    They do insane instrumentals. Their vocalist has them do them to give her vocal cords a rest during their 2 hour + concerts. Check out "Onset" and "From Now On".
    Band-Maid has generated a HUGE catalog of music over the last ten years. They have no 'weak' songs; they're all good and they sound better every year.

    The "live" video you chose was shot during the pandemic era when all they could do was livestreaming concerts with no audience. They become even more amazing during live performances in front of actual audiences. The official live video for "Domination" is a great introduction to their live shows, and if you want something more recent, I'd suggest their performance at Lollapalooza of the songs, "Dice" and "Hate?". The official live videos for "Puzzle" or "No God" or "Sense" that were shot in January of 2023 are good examples of their talent as well.

    You are in for the ride of your life if you continue with the Maids. There's well over 100 videos for you to dive into. Their live videos are always real kickers.
    They have a few really good pages to check out. Their official TH-cam page, their official web page, and their 'Instrumental Maids' page. Go for it.
    I guess the best ones to really get a feel for the band, would be 'Domination' (live) & 'Freedom' (live). And then move into their newer offerings.
    But my favorite will always be the 2 for 1 video of 'Manners & Black Hole'. It really shows the depth and creativity of the Maids.

    Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
    Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
    Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
    Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
    MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
    Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

    You can learn a lot about the band with interviews and documentaries. A good interview to start with is Music Gold Rush episode 73 & 74. As for the documentaries, check out Ohrenje's fantastic 7 part series, which covers each of the members. The first one focuses on Saiki, Lead Vocalist. Episode 2 covers the genius composer and Lead guitarist Kanami, "Mincho". Next, part 3, Akane, "The Gorilla" on drums. Followed by bassist MISA, MISA, MISA, the "Barefoot Assassin", in the 4th episode. Finally ends with a 3 episode dive into our amazing "Small Pigeon" with a dream. Founder, second (and sometimes lead) vocals, rhythm guitarist, main lyricist and main spokespigeon, Miku. Seven episodes of information sounds like a lot to take in, but trust me, they are so interesting, the time flies by and before you know it's done. I believe your buddy John Reaves did the Ohrenje series as reactions. Episodes 1 and 2 together, then 3 and 4. And then a 3rd reaction with 5, 6 and 7. PO!!!🕊 WORLD DOMINATION!!!🤘😆🤘

    Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume?
    MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
    Interviewer: What’s the meaning of the name “BAND MAID”?
    Miku: I used to work at a maid cafe, and I thought “I want a band!” So it became BAND-MAID - maids in a band!
    Interviewer: How did BAND-MAID come together? Did any of you know each other before joining the band?
    Kanami: Miku was looking for members to be in BAND-MAID. I was approached to join the band, and then I brought my friend, the drummer Akane, with me. Then, Akane brought her friend, the bassist Misa. So the instrumental performers were all gathered through connections between musicians. After that, our vocalist Saiki joined through an audition.

    Welcome to the world of Band-Maid. If you continue down the pigeon hole, you'll learn why it's not called a rabbit hole and you'll discover that "Thrill," although a great song in its own right, is in the shallow end of the pool of their immense talent. What song to do next? I'd say *"Puzzle."* It's a song that's newer (2017) than "Thrill" (2015) but it's still back-catalog. The official live version is from January 2023 and it is magnificent rock and roll.
    After you watch it everyone will _insist_ you watch an acoustic version of it, which you should. Then you'll know they aren't just another rock band.

    At the time of the MV, Miku (rhythm) couldn't actually play guitar and she is now a bona fide Rockstar. They completed their 10th Anniversary tour a couple of weeks ago with a performance at Yokohama Arena, 33 songs over 3 1/2 hours. Thrill was a highlight, very heavy and for me is the definitive performance of the song. Because their catalogue is so deep and so good , they have scheduled a concert for next year which will be songs that they didn't play at Yokohama Arena and it will easily equal the Yokohama setlist in quality songs.

    • @jeffersoncosgrove1910
      @jeffersoncosgrove1910 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It appears to me that Miku was actually performing some guitar by this time. The issue for many new guitarists is playing syncopated riffs while singing, so they seem to have worked around that. But the entire New Beginnings album was arranged and recorded for two guitars, even if Miku's parts were less strenuous. Plus she can be seen playing along in later MVs for this album and ancient live clips.

    • @rolandkarlsson7072
      @rolandkarlsson7072 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@jeffersoncosgrove1910 Listen to the two versions of Thrill above. I cannot hear two guitars in the first MV version, but I can hear two in the Live version.
      I have always heard that Miku COULD NOT play guitar in the beginning. But, that is actually not reasonable. Why did she buy guitars then? She even bought fancy guitars.
      She probably could play guitar, but not good enough to perform in a good band. But she learnt, and now is VERY proficient, even starting to play solos.

    • @jeffersoncosgrove1910
      @jeffersoncosgrove1910 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rolandkarlsson7072 Exactly. More likely she'd played some acoustic guitar, just not an electric so she didn't consider herself a "guitar player." As far as Thrill goes, even now they play similar parts in the chorus. It's one of the few times in any song where they play in unison, even though I've remembered that happening a few other times, such as the first half of the Puzzle intro. For the Thrill recording I could be wrong but seems to hear two slightly different versions of parts during the main riff, as if she was meant to sit out the verse and pre chorus, then join in on the chorus. Also there's a rhythm part to back the guitar solo section, which we know Miku plays now. There are two guitar parts coming in and out of the whole album. Obviously the amount increased with Brand New Maid and beyond. I heard she (Miku) stood alone for an extended guitar intro for Influencer at Yokohama. I'm looking forward to seeing that.

    • @davesheville2023

      Yeah she did! It was nothing fancy, just some power chords with a little feedback but it was cool..Then everyone else came in and they played through a few more chords and finished with a long pick scrape into Influencer. This video saved their career. Band Maid's management company was about to drop them due to low album sales and general public interest. The band and management team came to an agreement that they would shoot a low budget MV, put it on TH-cam and see if that would get some renewed interest in the band. At first nothing really happened but luckily they got noticed by international music fans and reactors. This video now has over 19 MILLION views and the band recently finished their 10 year anniversary tour and announced that they will be recording a new album in 2024.
    So, you have seen Band Maid and I saw you have been watching Baby Metal. Some other Japanese bands to check out:
    MAXIMUM THE HORMONE - Yoshu Fukushu They are VERY influential in the Japanese music scene. Band Maid's drummer, Akane Hirose, did not know girls were allowed to play rock drums until she saw Nao from MTH playing.
    Nemophila - Revive (official MV)
    Galneryus - Angel Of Salvation Symphonic metal band
    Lovebites - The Hammer Of Wrath (live) Always pick live MV for Lovebites. They are quite possibly the best new metal band on the planet.
    Hanabie - We Love Sweets
    Unlucky Morpheus - CADAVER/REVADAC They play the song CADAVER, then play it backwards note for note REVADAC. Btw they have a heavy metal violinist who also does Van Halen covers.
    Bridear - Light In The Dark
    DOLL$BOXX - Take My Chance
    Aldious - We Are
    Also, did you know India has metal bands?
    Look for Bloodywood and their song, Aaj. Don't worry, they sing in Hindi and English.

      I lay my vote for Nemophila and Lovebites, both ar super duper top notch. Also Hanabie and Maximum the Hormone are fun. MtH is a bit difficult though. They like to be silly and provocative. So, some of the things they do is a bit meaningless for most of us. But what they do good the do GOOD. I would also add Ningen Isu, just for good measure.

    • @rolandkarlsson7072
      @rolandkarlsson7072 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I concur on seeing Lovebites live. They are SO good live. They tend to overproduce their music movies. But they have some MV that are fantastic, e.g. the "Stand and deliver" one is fun. But, you should be familiar with the band first. Because they are doing things in the video only fans understand. Like swapping instruments and the singer Asami looking up at the guitarist Miyakos microphone. Asami is 1.47 m and Miyako is 1.57.

    As the saying goes, "You ain't seen nothin' yet!". If this video hadn't gone viral their label was prepared to drop them. Since then they've only gotten better. They're Hard Rock but they have every influence under the sun and use them every chance they get. The are quite simple the best band in the world. Think The Beatles, except they're girls, and from Japan, and there're five of them, and frankly they're better musicians. With well over 100 songs and counting, you have a lot of catching up to do. But the usual starting point for reactors is 'Domination' LIVE. But since you liked them so much, I'm going to suggest the song right before it, 'Play!' LIVE, and then just go ahead and jump right into 'Domination' LIVE without a pause. That would be a good start!

    Sugoi! I enjoyed your reaction. I've attended BAND-MAID shows twice in the last 14 months. They are easily one of the best live bands I've seen in 50+ years of concert going. They are incredibly fan friendly with their "Omajinai Time" and "Japanese Lesson Time" interludes. "Mincho" (Kanami Tono, lead guitarist) is a phenomenal musician as well as one of the most prolific songwriters of the last 5-10 years. There are over 100 songs on my BAND-MAID playlist, each worthy of unending listens.

    "I don't care if nobody watches these videos"
    Hahahah
    That will not be an issue.
    You will find they're better live than on the studio version most of the time. This isn't even a good example as this is from a covid concert without a live audience. Check out Domination or Play live if you want to see them own a room. These ladies just get better and better. You love this song, but aside from a reverence for it because it saved the band, most people think it's a fairly mid track for them... and they have like 150 songs.

    Hey, I think we can welcome the first penguin to the pigeon hole. 🤭🤘🏻 Believe me, this is their first MV from 8 years ago. If this is already to your taste and you consider it solid, then you'll absolutely love everything that comes next. At best, this only scratches the surface of what these ladies have to offer. For quite a few, these ladies are considered BY FAR the best the rock genre has seen and heard in decades. Sure, it's a matter of opinion, but I also think that 130+ songs WITHOUT A SINGLE bad one among them speaks volumes.
    Next up, I recommend "Real Existence" in its live version(!). And with that, the German Maidiacs section says "Hello and welcome" ✌🏻🙋🏻‍♂

    Good reaction. Thrill is their 1st released song, some 10 years ago today. I came across “Thrill” in 2016 and was both floored & hooked at the same time. Thrill is a solid, direct, catchy tune that is much simpler than their newer songs that are much harder, complex bordering on being metal/prog rock. This live version was a live (pandemic shutdown) internet livestream performance. The Maids are much better live playing to a big crowd. Check out the official live versions of “Freedom”, “Real Existence”, “Play” & “Domination”. Regardless, there are no weak songs from Band Maid, only varying degrees of excellence.

    Alone (MV) before this song, someone else wrote their material. Kanami submitted song after song until management gave this the green light. Since then, all of the songs have been written by Kanami, and Miku(lyrics) along with parts written by MISA and Akane. It kinda reminds me of how the relationship between Rush and their management changed after 2112. But I digress...
    Domination (Live) is the first song I ever heard by Band-Maid. It's the song that made me a fan.
    Those are my "next" recommendations or do whatcha like. All of their songs are excellent.

    Great band of epic talent from each lady. Nice choice for your first reaction to them, the music video that saved the band. The offical music video went viral and unbeknown to the band, their label was going to cancel their contract if this song didn't take off for them. Super choice 👍👍 ....although, you can't really go wrong with any of their stuff....10 years since this video and they have a large catalog to catch up with.

    Back in January 2022 I was having lunch at work while randomly clicking on TH-cam recommendations, when the name 'Band Maid' caught my attention. I fully expected it to be something typically Japanese - quirky and cutesy - but by halfway through the song my foot is already tapping. This does not usually happen on a first listen, even with bands I'm familiar with. Three songs down the line and I know I've found my new favourite band!
    An added bonus was the revelation of then finding all of the quality acts from Japan, South Korea and across the Far East, meaning that almost two years later 90% of the music I listen to on a daily basis is in languages I can't even speak, but I'm certainly not complaining....

    As the saying goes: You ain't seen nothing yet. This is the song that saved them from being dropped by their label, this wasn't supposed to be the one used for the MV but they pushed for it and got it. It's a decade old and they're better by leaps and bounds. You're going to get a lot of suggestions for DOMINATION live but I would tell you to watch DICE and HATE? from Lalapalooza 2023. Generally speaking people like them much better live, they're an incredible live band. Best rock band on the planet in my opinion but I'm horribly biased. Do the online version of NO GOD if you want to really hear what the bass player (Misa, Misa, Misa, the barefoot assassin) can do.

    Several of their MV have interesting art/visuals. Don't You Tell Me, Warning, Unleash, Afterlife are some. Other wise, echo what many are saying. They are another level with a real audience. Either Domination live, or HATE from their 2023 Lollaplalooza gig.
