    LT tires do come in handy when towing/hauling on rough roads. We have always had trouble with flats and tread belt breaks on the gravel roads in the Flint Hills of Kansas, the chert rock can be very sharp and will shred tires on heavy vehicles. No more flats after 10 ply tires.

      Yeah he just said he doesn’t need them so he probably don’t travel on gravel roads much like yourself. Everyone has different needs, he is better off with P rated tires and you’re probably better off with LT tires. No right or wrong answers.

    The Michilin Defender LTX are the best tires on the road. I want something more aggressive but I keep coming back to this tire based on my experience with them.

  • @ddbear8786
    @ddbear8786 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Kind of misses the point. It depends on the level of safety margin that you want. Towing with LT tires will have less chance of a flat, but P will also do fine if you stay within the load rating. Some people drive large heavy cars for increased safety and other people are comfortable driving tiny mini coopers. You could say that both are safe as long as you don’t crash. What if you drive over some wood debris or big pothole while towing? Or gravel road with sharp rocks? LT is safer. There are plenty of stories or people who tried both P and LT and kept getting flats with P until they switched to LT. There is no black and white answer, it depends on how much extra protection you want.

    I have been running lt load range c , d, and e tires on half tons for years but not for towing necessarily. I spend a lot of time off road working oil and gas as well as hunting and ATV riding. I have found the p rated tires to be far too light duty to tolerate that. Punctures and flats are common issues that i don't get with the lt variants. Different use however.

    you are absolutely correct with your analysis in my opinion. On my F150 I have a 17" wheel so I do run a set of LT245/70-17 tires. Smaller wheel than yours, and taller sidewall so I think this tire works great in this circumstance. I do run them only at 50psi, as these tires at that psi still have plenty of load capacity to well more than cover my load while towing. In this circumstance I have between 3500 and 3600# on the front axle and 3700 or so on the rear which is under axle capacity and even at only 50psi in the LT tires I am well under tire capacity. The previous owner of my truck had installed a set of P265/70 -17s on my truck and for the first year or so I used those, and actually they towed okay, but definitely the P265s had a bit more sidewall flex than I would prefer while towing. My wheel is only 7 inches wide as well, and I consider that a bit too narrow for the 265s. The P265s were rated for maximum 51psi, and I also ran them around 50. As always, safe travels.....

    As someone that's towed junk for 30+ years I don't agree. The difference between LT and P rate tires is very slim these days and no not all LT tires are heavier than P rates as they are both 4 ply tire rated. Typically the difference is in the material used not always the thickness so weight isn't always affected. Completely skipping over the even more confusing XL and SL ratings that exist now on both LT and P rate tires you don't mention "control" or "safety" in your explanation. Its been my experience towing with thicker ply tires have more control, wear better, less flats/failures, and in most cases return better mpgs when inflated correctly. On my daily driver 1/2 ton I always run C or D load rate tires with trailer weights between 4K-10K lbs. Even when my truck was new I tried the ST load rated tires it came with and had 2 flats and one tire cup something terrible in just 15K miles. I also noted better mpg's when towing with the D rate tires as they simply have less rolling resistance when under load. When your moving 10K+ lbs between trailer and truck the difference in 15-30lbs of tire weight isn't a factor. Ohh your trailer has either 6 or 9 ply tires and likely weighs less than your truck so why would 4 ply tires on it be acceptable?

    There's no way you need LT for towing. The manufacturer KNOWS what tires they gave you and how they rated it... That said, LT might be safer. Larger sidewalls hold more load. A larger sidewall should be better. A low profile is actually worse. It's all about heat, period.

    While I understand and appreciate your argument. It’s not necessarily a stupid thing. You are towing one of the most aerodynamic trailers in the industry with a smaller frontal area and lower side profile. Most travel trailers are a literal box 😂, so when the wind pushes trailer the truck feels wishy washy specially with longer trailers. I’ve towed over 10k miles in a year with P rated tires. They were fine first time picking up my trailer I didn’t like the feeling I’m not going to lie my exact words were people find this fun? 😂 just put on LT tires, E rated. Didn’t have to go that high as D would have been fine however found brand new takeoffs for a steal at $700 for all 4. While my P rated tires were fine. I wouldn’t go back, milaage when empty dropped from 19.2- 18 when towing it’s still 11-12. My confidence went up in towing and I can feel the road again and truck responds better. Whole set up is fine, no sway, nothing wrong. I just went from driving a Crown Vic to a Lexus.

We will be getting a a-frame trailer soon (still looking) and ill make sure it stays around 3500lb or less loaded. We will be dispersed camping so logging roads light 4wheel drive trails at the most. Would P-eated be fine, or should i consider E-rated for sidewall protection? Ill be going back to OEM size of 265/75/16. Right now I have E-rated 285/75/16, but i dont go offroad like i used to. Ive had nails just over the shoulder edge of these General Grabbers, and pulled it out and they were fine. Just wondering about the sidewall strength of both for towing on rough dirt roads.
