Wow, i've owned one of these for maybe 2yrs. I watched this a couple of times when I first got it and it's taken me til now (stumbling across this video again) to fully get it. It seems so stupid now, but I wasn't using the time mode/changing the note length, so was naturally really struggling to make groovy patterns. Thanks so much!
Nice tutorial alpharisc. While using the classic Function + Step buttons is the traditional way to set the pattern length, you can usually skip it on the TT-303. With the TT-303, the pattern length is already set as you added the notes in Pitch mode, so if you enter 16 notes, you can just play the pattern after exiting edit. You can also insert and delete steps in Pitch mode to adjust the pattern length using Time + Ins and Del. Time Edit mode is the classic way to enter the rhythm of the pattern as notes, rests and ties, but you can also directly enter your rests and ties in Pitch edit mode. Time + the Rest and Tie buttons can be used to enter a Tie or Rest step into the pitch edit mode. The new Tap mode in the latest firmware is also pretty nice. Nice work!
thanks for the video, I put my tt303 up for sale on eBay last week because I just couldn't program it without loosing a part of my soul. I'm now going to use the information in your video and not sell it
Thank you, great tutorial! I'm finding in the manual you can go back one step in case you made a mistake with the [back] and [time] keys although I can't seem to get it done. it just goes back and leaves the note in it's place
Thanks Charlie, if you notice in the video you can go back to the start of your pattern or to the end, if you want to change the note, just find the one you don't like and select a different one, remove slide/accent/transpose etc
I just sent cyclone an email: Hello, I recently purchased a Bassbot and I have to tell you I'm deeply impressed. Though I would love to see a tap record live input while recording (like the 909, jx3p and korg esx-1) in a future update so you can make patterns on the fly (with overdub preferably). Would you consider this in a future update? this would make the machine a lot easier to program. Thank you for all your effort so far. Charlie.
Good weekend :) Q: Is there anyway to detune the TT-303??? as in the TB-303’s TM5 pot (V/oct) it seems to be missing on the internal board.. I need to tune it to my other hardware/s..
Hi! I have some trouble changing the gate length. Followed every step but my tt just doesn't seem to switch to the time mode field. You know whats wrong? Thanks a lot.
how to you set the timing of each note? not sure why you didn't explain that, you just hit the 16th notes a million miles per hour and didn't bother what you were doing.
does anyone knw the proper way to sync a tt303 with a tr 606? i have heard the doepfer msy2 does not work.. i have googled and googled and come up with nothing..please HELP!!
+Steve Nardone try sending a clock from an assignable out on the 606 such as hi hat/rimshot to the cv gate of the tt 303. although i don't have a 606 this works wth my tr8
I've got the same problem. Tried it with OSX 10.9.5 (iMac) and 10.10.1 (MBP) and Win7 with a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. Update from 1.0 to 1.1 was no problem.
both, and is it possible to skip steps? for example you put a C on 1/16 and in the second step 2/16 you leave it empty and then program another C on 3/16?
Hey, it's possible to do that. When you press "next" you go to your next empty step, and if you then press accent, (above accent you see the silence symbol in note notation.) the step is then kept silent. Same goes for "up", which makes the previous note keep sounding.
Hey man would you say this TT-303 have the same growl and Whop Whop sound the original have, I mean that raw lion burp growl is pretty much what you want and if it's not present in the same way it's pointless to buy it. The reason why I ask is because the comparison on Acid voice homepage is so shit it's not even funny, I mean no demo on youtube is that crappy so I am starting to wonder if they are bought up by like adafruit or roland to promote their units. I mean the volume is off in the comparison and the pitch seem higher and it just sound bright with no accent correct either and with no bounce or character to the growl at all. Check out the site and see what you think because I don't know, something just doesn't feel right with that comparison. But anyway what is your opinion on the TT doing those distorted lion burps and how do you think it compares to the x0xb0x? =) The x0xb0x to TB comparison on acid voice site is really nice there it becomes a no brainer to buy, but adafruit is a kit only from what I could see on the site and I don't really know how to build one. Thanks for uploading these videos I appreciate it.
It is different. The resonance doesn't have the same sizzle and the bass responsive and tone is different. The accent is quite different from the original, it has more decay on the filter envelope. The x0xb0x is the only unit that I have that sounds like a complete clone. That said the TT-303 is great to program, you can use it to control cv synths and it can create a new energy due to the subtle differences...
@@alpharisc Really? REALLY? I haven't seen a single x0xb0x that was even REMOTELY close to the real thing. The TT303 sound much closer to the original than those x0x machines.
TheLT I have a video comparing it. x0xb0x sounds much closer to the original than the TT. To start with the TTs accent is wrong, the filter envelope is way too open, sounds like a slow quaking duck. That said with the x0xb0x you have to choose the components carefully, I heard one made by mode machines and it sounded completely broken.

I like to set the pattern length at the end just in case I used too many notes, I feel funny counting out loud... On my own, in a quiet room ;)
alpharisc me too, 8 16 32 64 eh eh eh
The best tutorial I've seen for this machine! Thanks a lot!

fuckin funny that.... i havnt got one of these but I can totally feel your pain.
Took the words right out of my mouth
great video I'm glad my minds at peace on weather to get a new webcam or not.
on another note - great tutorial :)
what exactly did you do when you said "change the time mode a bit" at 4:59?
Thank you, great tutorial! I'm finding in the manual you can go back one step in case you made a mistake with the [back] and [time] keys although I can't seem to get it done. it just goes back and leaves the note in it's place

Ahhh it's that simple! sometimes (most of the time) I'm thinking too complicated. Love the midi support by the way! anyways, thanks for the answer!

Yeah a real time record would be pretty cool, play it from the keys or a MIDI keyboard :D
alpharisc exactly, that's where we're aming at. Maximum musical freedom.

Thank you so much for this great Tutorial!!
All of this, and Devil Fish mod compatible. Frack yes.
Such a nice tutorial.. I would like to mute some notes in a sequence so to make it more groovie, what should i do? Thanks
I found this super useful. Cheers
does anyone know if its possible to fake a trigger in function to the step sequencer via midi?
how can I live a blank note? or mute it? so it doesn't sound on that step?
How does it compare to Behringers new TH release please?
Hi! I have some trouble changing the gate length. Followed every step but my tt just doesn't seem to switch to the time mode field. You know whats wrong? Thanks a lot.
How do I program brake in the TT 303?

I cant get my TT303 to ver 2. I have yried with M Audio and OSX Yosemite and Windows 8 no luck. I am using the GUI from TT303. Are you in Melbourne?

Had same problem today. Changed midi cable and it worked. People have had success with trying a different midi interface.
Did you sort it out Cray?
alpharisc
Yeah had to go to a friends place and use his computer.
Excellent :)
"it sounds like it's falling down the stairs..."
The Time Mode still confuses me. .....Trying to figure it out
+zoopy60444 I I found some Informations about the Timemode in the original TB 303 Manual.
Hey AlphaRISC, thank you for uploading this video. Can U please answer me one question: How Can I program some long tones on the tt303?
What do you mean by long tones? notes that are tied together or notes that slide together?
both, and is it possible to skip steps? for example you put a C on 1/16 and in the second step 2/16 you leave it empty and then program another C on 3/16?
