What I love about these two things (and the 808) they always sound now. Depending on how you use them. People talk about classic music as if it's the only thing with charm and history but these units have a history and class that never dies. Even when people buy new pads, they want these samples on them.
Don't listen to those that set limitations on themselves in any way i.e. vst vs analog. Use any and all instruments/tools available to you. It is not the tools you use, but how you use them. I have a midi keyboard and controller but i still use my MPC and my analog synths as well (its just a matter of preference). They're all one big, happy, patchwork family. Without Grandfather, Jr. wouldn't exist... but the youngster has learned from the old ways and extrapolated upon them. Progress: don't be afraid of it. Your Roots: know them. Class dismissed bitches.
I'm just learning to program a 303 and wanted to put a few classic acid lines in to see how they were done, and found a few versions of this one online which were total shit. You've got it just right here though - nice one!
Great video! I never knew about synthesizers until a few years ago, but I had to get a behringer 303 copy when it came out. It was like $130! I want two now, but I’m patiently waiting for their Synthi A clone and their 606.
Love it mate. Great demonstration on how to programme them both. God they still sound so good together. Such an over used sound but thatsvfir good reason. Vst will never replace solid analogue.
I truly loooooove this sound.... As for using a computer,I think I'd just rather be able to touch what I'm creating,I'm the same about djing, vinyl is where my heart is.... Superb videos!!!!
Some software 303 emulators are incredibly, incredibly accurate in recreating the original 303 sound. Audiorealism has one that basically even the most hardcore 303 audiophile would have a hard time distinguishing from the real thing.
demonkoryu perhaps it wasn't just the hardware. Whatever it was, the older technology had a distinct sound and ATTITUDE. The machines were harder to use and were labour intensive - but maybe the hands-on-approach engaged the artists more - hence the song is a stronger reflection of the artists personality as opposed to modern-age 'dribble.'
also if you turn your 303 right up, and tweak your gain on your desk you'll get the ragged sound. and if its to much just use the gain to smooth it out......
"if you cant afford one its because you aren't a professional musician.." "..and so should not be sitting on a tool which.." WHUT? who are you to say that? let me tell you something.. no one has to be a professional musician in order to LOVE the sound of this thing the way you said that is like we don't deserve to have it? i can't afford a 303, but i managed to get a x0xb0x even if i *DID* bought a TB-303 - would that make me a professional musician? - no do i make music with my x0x - HELL YEAH
They will be mine...once I've sold my 505 which has way too many variables, sounds seem dated (even though it contains the bench mark amen and tech house drums) It just doesnt quite reach the timeless analog sound of the 303 and 909. The MC505 D-beam is a bunch of POS shite, uterly usles aside from filter and cut, which work better on a knob. These are the organs my body needs to punctuate reality. Great video!
@Filthdrive I use a future retro mobius sequencer als master clock. It sends both midi as sync24. The 909 receives is hooked up via midi and the 303 receives sync24 via an mc202 (acts as a sync24 splitter for a 606 as well).
The fact that people are putting hundred of hours to build clones it means that there is still something. the glide, the 36db/oct filter with that unique resonance, the weird sequencer. it all contributes to something unique. Plus I don't really wanna program a bassline with the mouse.
CHROMATICFILMS No it will just sound utterly and completely different. Those people who like the valve/tube sound will find it harsh, tinny, brash and basically unenjoyable. And those people who like a modern Class A amp playing HD WAVs will find a vinyl record through a valve/tube amp muddy, indistinct, distorted and unlistenable. Different strokes, simple as that.
majorfubar69 A reference system is just that a "reference system". Thermionic culture will sound creamy as you like played back on a reference system. A reference system is not tinny harsh brash and unenjoyable or it is not a reference system. Just listened to a bunch of Coltrane Recordings in my studio and they sound incredible. I can hear every nuance of the recording, the warmth the detail the dynamics all with the potential of full range frequency playback. Those that want to listen to wax cylinders on a vintage valve amp would not be able to tell the difference between a recording of a wax cylinder and valve amp played back on a reference system and the real thing in a blind test. My Thermionic Culture Vulture sounds as valve as you can get but I would be missing out on all that detailed analogue thermionic harmonic distortion if I referenced it via an old valve amp. The new high end valve stuff can sound transparent just like solid state too. I don't think anybody really hates the sound of vinyl played back on a decent valve amp and I really don't think most people like harsh sounding tinny brash unenjoyable sound either.
CHROMATICFILMS The point I was making is, a lot of it's about personal preference. I actually used to know someone who preferred the sound of old shellac 78s to vinyl records (yes he was very old even then, and that was 30 years ago). Quite often people who like the sound of valves/tubes/vinyl don't like the sound of integrated amps. Or at least that's what I've found. Though I can't say I've devoted huge chunk of my life to scientifically researching it.
A reference system can easily give you that exact sound if that is what you want as it is a reference system. So feed in the sound of a vintage valve amp and that is what you get out. Not many would want to mix a record on a non reference system because it is not a reference system and will not be able to play back accurately.
great video. how do you like the doepfer msy2? i can't decide between the doepfer and the kenton pro-solo. the doepfer has 2 sync24, the kenton needs a DIN split lead. any tip?
No way! This website says that Rebirth 303 cost only 640 SEK Swedish Krona = 61.77 EUR Euro Now I'm seriously thinking to get one if not used TB-03. I have to check review for both of'em.
I have a TB-3, but it is really limited. It looks nice though. Especially with my TR-8. I definitely would not recommend the TB-3. But it has a step seq.
I find curious the way you skip the kick in the first step: in any other case I guess I'll hear the one of the compass in the 8th step, but it's clear for me that is in the one.. Maybe its couse I'm so used to that 303 sequence ... Indeed makes me wonder if the original Fatboy Slim track has this kick-snr "figure" Well, whatever.. Nice video, thanks!
I think the clones have come out with really good instruments in there own element, but it hasn't really come close to the 303 sound yet. Control Synthesis Deep Bass Nine is probably the best of all of them for it's really cool sound, but again not really like the 303.
@synthjammer Could you record another video of programming this bassline on a 303 now that you have replaced the switches? The double-triggering confuses me quite easily when I try to program the bassline on my 303 emulator lol. Also, could you caption every transpose and key stroke? I would really appreciate it.
There's another clone called the TT-303 Bass Bot by Cyclone Analogic. It's a complete hardware clone with the same aesthetics too. Look them up, they're also making a 606 clone.
I dont really agree, most of the pros I know use d16 vsti bc its quicker and easier to get in the mix. 303 and another 303 can sound very different, unless you have had it from new or know every component to check you dont even know if the 303 is original, many have been 'fixed' with bad parts ect, so you just cannot tell.
Rebirth it is. Now as an app but I didn't see the original version on their site. I don't need it I have 909, 808 kits and plenty of synths that'll do a good 303.
It's odd how much that thing sounds like an acid trip makes me feel. Not the cheesy psychedelic nonsense that we usually hear about but the feeling that I just ingested some heavy chemicals and they are strangely melting their way through me but in a fun way.
As somebody who has owned analogue hardware, virtual analogue hardware, and many softsynths, all I can impart with you is this: Softsynths almost never have the same mix-ability as hardware. Is it because it's in a box? No. It's because the designers of hardware have gigantic teams of innovators, each with knowledge of individual stages of a synth. Softsynths are rarely assembled by more than a few programmers and engineers, and do not receive the same kind of effort as a hardware product.
It's a collectors item. Thats why the price is so high. Anyone who'd pay the money for a 303 knows there's cheap alternatives, but they just gotta have it. Collectors are generally a bit crazy, and rich.

indeed, i only use vsthost as daw haha, i hate midi players and piano roll.
i want all the old equipment :) Analog all day!
I owned a 909 with an ex girlfriend, she left with it. I cried for months.. About the 909.
Thanks for sharing, I like the old sound of the old hardware, really warm & I'd never really seen a real 303 or 909 be programmed, thanks
That sound never gets old.
I could play for hours with those those two products
paul gregory With me, for 'Hours' read days!!!
I'm just learning to program a 303 and wanted to put a few classic acid lines in to see how they were done, and found a few versions of this one online which were total shit. You've got it just right here though - nice one!
The analog sound transformation is the better thing on this machines. Great job!

I came here because I saw your name ”Analogue Hummus” and I thought to myself I need to hear whatever this guy is up to 😅😂 Everybody needs aah!
That last 30-40 sec sounds amazing!
I want those so badly. I love the sound of acid synth.
wow - cool toy & demo. I never played one, but it's tempting to get one now
Ahh this brings back the days of Acid. There will never be a VST that can replicate that warmth and breadth from the original circuits.
Double blind testing shows that nobody is able to tell the difference between a modern VST and "warm", "broad" hardware of ye olden days.
demonkoryu perhaps it wasn't just the hardware. Whatever it was, the older technology had a distinct sound and ATTITUDE. have they done a legitimate test of this or are you just talking about the ones done on various forums?
don fernandez He's just talking out the ass...
That was sweet. I wonder if Cyclone Analogic follows the exact same programming.
Tron! I've got the orange Roland which is like rocking horse. Love this stuff.

Ramon Strien mmmmmm the sweet sweet sound of vinyl springs to mind. there's nothing like a vinyl record played through an old valve amp ;)

yea and the Reason's Redrum app is very similar too the 909
Cause a synth app is digital, analogue hardware has a lovely tone and warmth which digital software just cannot replicate in my opinion.
I want one of these so badly, but they look complicated. I can't even figure out Fruity Loops >_>
god i love this thing, wish i had one
Does somebody know a cheap alternative for them? I mean for real the prices are ridilicious
Also the last bit is obv trolling so i'll just roll my eyes at that.
I think it was just the cheap behringer mixer with that channel input gain at max

It’s in the wrong key?
P B could be that i tuned it in another key. This was just to illustrate how to program that pattern
I would die to have your setup D:
Good sound! Acid! :)
Sick, Exterminator 2 Music! I love it!
You really need to replace your tact switches, but you probably know that and did that already... :) They shouldn't double-trigger. :)
its a free dl from the site just reg and get the .iso plus all the add on mods
Didn't Norman's engineer do most of the programming, sampling i.e. work back in the day...............????
Check out any of the interviews in his studio. It's super basic and he does his own sampling.
Thanks man.
Awesomeness
@Shoomer1988 What are you talking about? Musicians first learn from learning to play other peoples songs. This is an excellent and skilful reproduction. What have you ever created?
By the looks of it he just uploads other people's music. Totally an expert lol
I have 3 xoxboxes and 2 TB303s, the xox is great for the midi, step sequencer etc, but there is no comparison in the sound. The xox sounds hollower, less glassy and does not achieve the original 303 squawk even close.
if you cant afford one its because you aren't a professional musician (at least not a successful one) and so should not be sitting on a tool which can be afforded and employed by someone who's use of it will actually be heard by the public.
holly shit . 303 & 909 togheter
Does anyone else hear "White Spirit" by Feed Me? It's just missing a note.
damn that is tedious, no wonder these things flopped back in the 80s when they first came out! Learning to play the Bass is much easier and less time!
