Than you for this. I have been over every inch of this building carrying out a measured survey when I worked for the Council. Brings back many memories memories. I was lucky enough to go to the top of the clock tower just before my retirement. Get them to take you in the basement to where the Police changing rooms were and where it can flood from the beck. Also the old kitchen and the plenum shafts in the dub basement.
The cells and their corridors (which are usually Olive Green & White, but seem to have been Brown & White at some point) can be seen in many films and TV shows, however the all White corridor style basement can be seen in the film *Upgraded* (2024) where *Camila Mendes* is forced to work by her snobby superiors.
Awesome video , what an incredible building. It has been kept in a lovely original condition throughout and the attention to detail , even in the places that the general public wouldn't see. Thoroughly enjoyed this Darren , many thanks 👍
You can see the basement in *Upgraded* (2024), and I'm 99% sure that a random room on one of the upper floors (which I snuck up to around 7 years ago, where I'm fairly sure the public aren't allowed) is the location for the series 4 *Hospital Interior* in *Peaky Blinders* (just 1 of 7 Peaky Blinders locations in City Hall.) The exterior of the *Hospital* is in a preserved neighbourhood in *Manchester,* however I'm 99% certain that the interior of the *Hospital* is *Bradford City Hall.* The floor is a slightly different style to the floor in the majority of the building, however the *White Bedside Cabinets* which they used in the show, are the same ones which are or were kept somewhere in *Hospital Setting* in *Bradford College* or the *University of Bradford.* They probably used the same bed frames and other hospital props from the *College/University* too.

Very interesting video Darren I have The Great Train Robbery DVD/Blu-ray 1996/2015, didn't know the court scene was filmed in Bradford City Hall I'm going to take another look at the DVD again. Very impressive nice one.
Practically everything in the *The Great Train Robbery* (2013) is filmed in *Bradford.* It's roughly 60% *Bradford,* and 40% *Leeds,* in the same locations which are always used for filming. I have it downloaded from the internet for free, and have a list of most of the locations written down in one of my private blogs. I haven't watched either of them for a while, however I'm pretty certain that *The Great Train Robbery* (2013) and *Victoria* (2016-2019) did not film in the *Old Law Court.* They did however film in other areas of *City Hall* such as the *Council Chamber,* the *Main Entrance Hall,* the *Prison Cells,* the *Red* coloured toilet with the circle window, the *Courtyard,* and other random rooms. The same can be said for *Peaky Blinders* sort of, as *Peaky Blinders* only used the *Old Law Court* for the *Changretta Family Photo.* They did however use the *Prison Cells, Main Entrance, Main Entrance Hall, Mayor's Office* (or the room opposite the Mayor's Office), the *Two Reception/Conference Rooms,* the *Council Chamber,* and a random room on one of the upper floors, for actual filming rather than photography, which were used for *6 locations in Peaky Blinders* (7 when you include the photo).
There's many more toilets I need to see, mainly Green ones like the one at 0:48 if I remember correctly, which I'm pretty sure are somewhere in *City Hall.* I need to see more because there's one, two, maybe even three or more mainly Green toilets which I have in my head, which have been used in multiple films and TV shows, but didn't think to check them out when I visited around 6 or 7 years ago, however I don't remember that Green one being used. If they're not in *City Hall,* then they will most likely be in *Braimes Pressings* in *Leeds.* The Red toilet at 9:37 however, has definitely been used in at least 3 productions.
Mate thats actually brilliant, i work at the great victoria hotel and they host film crews for the courts, and ive always loved to see inside it, thank you for that content
I worked in there for a year almost 40 years ago. The office was in the original building in the attic near the clock tower. You never had an excuse not to know when the quarter hours were as the clock struck to remind you. I never did find my way around and would often get lost and need help to find my way back to where I started!
May I add a little info here. At 11:30 the video shows the entrance to the Court room. Ahead you can see the small windows at eye level. Most of the panes are frosted but one is clear and gives one the opportunity of peeking into the room to see the state of the proceedings so as not to interfere by entering the room. Judges didn't like it if people came and went during his summing up. Also, if you were to turn left you would go down a few steps, turn right into a corridor which goes under the Judges chair and emerges at the other side of the Court which had a similar but mirrored entry. Originally there was a bar across the front of the dock but was removed for filming.
Darren, Great watch again... The image at 3:59 reminds me of the Dome above the Grand Staircase on the Titanic. I have learned so much about Victorian Toilets, can't wait to share with my coworkers tomorrow, by the way "Massive Urianls" is quite the understatement -- they're as big as shower-stalls.
Thanks for the heads up on the Queen's toilet in Morley town hall. My dentist is in Morley and I always make a point of using the town hall toilets when I go. They are really nice but I didn't know I could visit the Queen's shitter. I'll be sure to make enquiries next time I need to pay a visit.
That takes me back! I have only been in there once as a child of about 6 in the early 1980s. Our school and another competed to see how many children we could fit inside a Nissan Micra in front of the City Hall then got a short tour, met the mayor and had some sandwiches provided in the mayor's fancy visiting room. Unfortunately all I recall are the flag room, the courtroom and the back staircase. I was obsessed with secret passages as a kid and thought that somebody did say there was at least one in there but they might have been pulling my leg.
The secret passages are more likely the sewers which follow the *Bradford Beck* and go from *Bradford Live* in the West, *Market Street* in the East, and also lead to *Sunbridge Wells.*
@@danielgardecki1046 I am now aware of the many underground waterways in Bradford though, unfortunately not their routes. But the implication here was that there were hidden passageways within the building, Though I do wonder whether there are cellars leading to a passage to the Cathedral if only a culvert.
Darren maybe one day you can do a vid on Manchester city / town hall? its just bening or been refurbished and re opening supposedly this year! its another great expample of Victorian arcutecture and well worth a vist ..it also has an extension like bradford BUT they kept the street in between open (its now pedestrainised ) and has a bridge going between the old town hall and the extension! ...ALSO worth checking out is the John Rylands Library in Manchester it is part of the univerity of manchester now BUT anyone can visit it" It opened to the public in 1900 is one of the finest examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Europe and is indisputably one of the great libraries of the world. Hello Darren. Love to look your videos of hidden secrets. If it is from the ballroom in Blackpool or old railtracks. The courtroom of Bradford Hall remembered me to an old movie with Margret Rutherford in Miss Marple. Do you know if it was there? Please excuse my bad English. Greetings from Germany
At least one or two episodes each of both *ITV* series *Poirot* and *Marple* have filmed in *Bradford.* However I'm pretty certain that both only used the *Keighley and Worth Valley Railway,* and nothing else in *Bradford,* from what I remember anyway. I haven't seen either show, as I actively avoided them, and practically every other *ITV* detective show when I was a kid and teenager (apart from *Heartbeat, The Bill,* and a few others), so I have no idea which episodes they are, although I'll find out one day when I decided to download them all. It's possible that the *BBC* original *Miss Marple* filmed in *Bradford* too, although I don't remember hearing anything about that. I have a list of at least 50 films and TV shows which have used *Bradford City Hall,* and can name most of the specific rooms too, although I'm certain there will be more productions I don't know about yet. Just this week I randomly found out about a Kung-Fu feature film from 16+ years ago which filmed at *Bradford City Hall,* however the film got cancelled after the 2007-2008 financial crisis.
@@danielgardecki1046you're right. The original BBC Miss Marple from 1964 wouldn't filmed in Bradford. After I wrote the comment I watched Murder Most Foul again. But I looked especially at the background. I don't know where it is, but it isn't in Bradford. Thanks for your comment.
Spooky. I was speaking to my partner the other day, saying that I thought there must be a town hall somewhere that looks like a court (and so is used in TV dramas, since I doubt they could film in a real court) and then this video randomly pops up.
I recently watched a brilliant Jim Broadbent film on bbc 2 called The Duke and a great deal of it is filmed around our Bradford, namely little Germany, and the very court you have shown us and undercliffe cemetery perhaps an idea for a video to visit them and tell the tale of the Duke a true story of a funny and remarkable man
*Jim Broadbent* has filmed at least 5 productions in *Bradford.* *Bradford City Hall* has been used in at least 50 productions. I'm the guy who added most of the cast and crew to *The Duke* (2020) on *IMDB* years ago, because film and TV people clearly aren't bothered about making sure their credits are added. I want to focus on updating *Bradford* productions, but it's impossible to ignore the countless false, incorrect, mixed up etc credits, profiles, productions etc which I find every single day. In the last week or two I've been focusing on some 10-15 year old feature film and web series productions by people mainly based in *York,* as I've seen them pop up countless times over the years, when trying to find the correct people. As predicted, there are 100s of duplicate profiles for the same people, with their credits spread over multiple profiles which I'm slowly merging together or moving. So far I've updated 1 web series (consisting of 24 episodes) one by one, 2 feature films of theirs, plus have nearly finished updating a 3rd feature film of theirs. I just need to finish adding all the thanks credits and companies then it will be complete. There's also around 20 or 30 more shorts by them on their main channel, which are missing from *IMDB* at the moment, which I will be adding, most of which seem to be related to the web series, but whether they should be included as part of the series or not is another question, as they consist of things like special episodes, and behind the scenes stuff. The bulk of the same cast/crew from those productions have also worked on at least 1 more feature film, at least 4 more web series, plus around 30 more short films. There also seems to be countless missing music videos involving one person in particular, however I think I might not bother adding them, as like I said, there's countless music videos where he's listed as a crew member, on countless channels.
I remember when 9/11 happened there was a book of condolences that people could sign in the grand entrance. You could still enter through the main stairs at the front then. I couldn’t resist going in to have a nosey!
You still can today, but only if you're invited to something like a wedding or other event, or it's one of the one or two open days they have in September every year for the Heritage Open Days.
Worked in there once. Freelancing for my friends business that supplied the audio for a presentation project 😅 it’s such a shame that Bradford so run down now
lol Darren i have been i a court twice in my life ......once in the dock .....when poll tax was in ..gave my mam so much each moth but she did'nt pay my poll tax so I ended up at magistrates court with an attchemnent of earnings given me i was prob 18 or 19 back then and 1st time in the court and it was a scary experience tbh...the second time was in the gallery at magistrates court as a dear much beloved friend who was a regular patron of the night club i worked in was Murdered by her then boyfirend...we all went down to the court to see sentancing OBV it went to crown court in Manchester that was creepy too as he stared at us all (as he OBV knew our faces ) i felt so uncomfortablewith that too ...its been over 20 yrs since that happened and i cant remember if he got life or not ( it was BRUTAL murder where he tied her up to a chair ect and tortured her for hrs before killing her!) and in 2024 i find myself wondering if he has got out of prison or not and where he is now ...he was only about 19 or 20 and our friend who he killed was in her 40s we all used to call her a cougar lol BUT she was the loveliest person you could ever meet .....a friend of ours from the club has some vid of her when we were all going to see rocky horror at the palace theater in manchester on YT so thats still there for me to remember her as well!
Ooh, Darren! Didn't you feel terribly underdressed as you gazed up at that lovely dome? Crinolines would sure have been a lot better match for all that marble?!! I can just see you with the parasol on those stairs... blushing when any of the gentlemen whom may have occupied those wonderfully tiled facilities pass by...! But never mind, you've done the Dick Whittington bit now - it's only a matter of time until they elect you as Lord Mayor, my dear... Then you could have the original mayoral quarters restored to their original sites, and show us where you hang your pendant...!
What about the tunnels and basement 🤔??? Look at every single door 🚪 has an archway for the REAL ORIGINAL GIANTS DOOR 😮 Clearly TARTARIAN with at least 3 floors buried beneath ground level
The basement recently featured in *Upgraded* along with many more areas of the building... However the "real basement" is underground, and no-one gets to see it, however it can be found online. It contains the *Bradford Beck* which goes all the way under *Bradford Live* to the West, and *Market Street* to the East. I saw some videos by urban explorers years ago who went there, one of which decided to exit the tunnels/sewers on *Market Street,* with people no doubt wondering what was going on.
5:55 Seriously? No, seriously! You look good for your age you old goat! Must be all that messing about making them thar little videos life of Riley thing that you got goin on.
I worked for the Council for 39 years and sometime held meetings in the old court house.

Which is why it has doubled for that many times.

Great video - really interesting. The only time I’ve been in City Hall was when I got married 😀
Would like you to investigate Yeadon town hall
Waiting for the invite 😉
Very ornate 😊
I remember when 9/11 happened there was a book of condolences that people could sign in the grand entrance. You could still enter through the main stairs at the front then. I couldn’t resist going in to have a nosey!
You still can today, but only if you're invited to something like a wedding or other event, or it's one of the one or two open days they have in September every year for the Heritage Open Days.
I was in the cells in about 1971
Well I have been in a real Court so have beaten you on that one 😅 going to watch part 2 next thanks.
Worked in there once. Freelancing for my friends business that supplied the audio for a presentation project 😅 it’s such a shame that Bradford so run down now
Thanks for your channel, as an agoraphobic person I am unable to visit these places, But with your help, I can Cheers.
21:21 Smart arse here.
That Cromwell fella should be half a dozen statues to the right of ol' nephew nobbler Richard III himself.
Darren, just thinking here: In part 2 I'm sure we'll see the inside of the Clocktower from bottom to top.......
You will. Not at the top though
@@AdventureMe High enough to see the clock mechanism and the mechanism for ringing the bells ??????
Have a good evening "afternoon here"
From a time when Bradford competed with London for wealth.
A time when Bradford was richer than London, and every other city on the planet.
At 2.54 did anyone hear a little girl giggle
lol Darren i have been i a court twice in my life ......once in the dock .....when poll tax was in ..gave my mam so much each moth but she did'nt pay my poll tax so I ended up at magistrates court with an attchemnent of earnings given me i was prob 18 or 19 back then and 1st time in the court and it was a scary experience tbh...the second time was in the gallery at magistrates court as a dear much beloved friend who was a regular patron of the night club i worked in was Murdered by her then boyfirend...we all went down to the court to see sentancing OBV it went to crown court in Manchester that was creepy too as he stared at us all (as he OBV knew our faces ) i felt so uncomfortablewith that too ...its been over 20 yrs since that happened and i cant remember if he got life or not ( it was BRUTAL murder where he tied her up to a chair ect and tortured her for hrs before killing her!) and in 2024 i find myself wondering if he has got out of prison or not and where he is now ...he was only about 19 or 20 and our friend who he killed was in her 40s we all used to call her a cougar lol BUT she was the loveliest person you could ever meet .....a friend of ours from the club has some vid of her when we were all going to see rocky horror at the palace theater in manchester on YT so thats still there for me to remember her as well!
Cubicles, not stalls.
Haha. Thanks. I'll take that as a compliment
@adventureme. If you like a nice ornate dome get yourself over to the Spa Theatre in Bridlington.
Already been lol. But they wouldn't let me film
