British Transport Films made a series of ‘Report on Modernisation’ films. The first two were made in 1959 and 1961. In one of these, I think it was the first, a model of the proposed Leeds station development was shown.
When I was last there a couple of years ago I walked through the North Concourse and just before reaching the exit at the far end on the right side is a tile mosaic seen set into the floor, ‘News Theatre’. I remember the ones at Victoria and Waterloo Stations in London, but I didn’t know that Leeds also had one. The only other one I know of was at Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
When the North Concourse at Leeds was being cleared out in preparation for restoration and re-opening something against one of the walls had been removed, revealing the remains of a poster for the 1966 Southport Flower Show.

I've climbed onto the suspended walkway that hangs above where the river enters the tunnel and looked down at that door wondering what's behind it.. So satisfying to finally know! haha
The layers of infrastructure are amazing, love seeing stuff like this. Really well covered!

Darren, I will never think of an expanded city station in quite the same way again, as might even be on top of you! Your knowledge of all these old thoroughfares, waterways and bridges is impressive indeed and fascinating too - especially for those that imagine that things have always been as they see them in the present! There are persistent rumours about Edinburgh Waverley, following the success of the Glasgow Central tours, saw paws crossed, eh? You might even get to guide the guides...

Even more, how many times has this been done in how many towns and cities across the country, the planet in fact?
I'm really impressed by the tanking/waterproofing successfully completed back in the mists of the distant past. It had to be perfect because of the enormous amount of pressure exerted on the walls of and by the former goit.

If those arches could talk, the stories they could tell......
Funny how we live our lives not knowing what's under where we live, work and play.
Thanks Darren for this great watch.

Darren I knew something was under there but never did I think it was as vast as that.i deliver to Bibbis restaurant close to where you were filming and the vastness of the area under cover and buried is over whelming.once again a superb video brilliant details and images .keep going Darren brilliant work.can I just say that under there the line for York would be above you .just saying.

Astonishing archaeological labyrinth. DIfficult to get your bearings, let alone picture its earlier industrial history, before the river/goyt was bricked-over. Must have created some problems, I would imagine, when putting in the foundations for the new buildings? Well done - a very interesting couple of video's!

Curious, how did you get permission to go down there? I’d love to magnet fish off of the edge under the car park, bet there’s some proper history in the water
