Make a wooden train whistle | 2012 New Years noisemaker

  • Here's how to make a 4-toned train whistle made using a scrap piece of a 2x4 board. These make great stocking-stuffers or gifts. Kids love them.
This is also a good project to make if you have limited tools. All of my sawing could easily be accomplished with a hand saw.

    Dear Steve,
Thanks for this awesome video. I saw someone use this today as a classroom management tool. They are not easy to come by where I live, but with your tutorial, I used my hand tools and had one made up this afternoon. Such fun! Thank you for the plans and the detail you put into your video. Cheers

This has to be one of the most fun projects I've watched in a long time. Thanks, Steve.
... but it seems a bit dangerous. What if a youngster blows the whistle causing someone to jump in an effort to get away from the train, hits the counter, knocks off a slice of bread which lands on the floor, peanut butter side down. If the person cleaning up the stuck bread is allergic to peanuts, they could easily break out in hives.

Another video on the net demonstrated turning the whistle on a lathe, before drilling the sound holes. I'm thinking, build the whistle first, and then turn it down to something less square. It's held together with glue, so it's not going to come apart on the lathe
