So pleased to see you making this whistle. My dad used to make them for us as kids ( from Hazel) I remembered the twisting and tapping but not the rest. I’ll make one tmrw on my walk. Thank you so much
Thank you for enabling an 83 year old man to take a walk down Memory Lane & for refreshing my memory on how to make wooden whistles like I did in my childhood & adolescence! From your accent I detected that you & your wife must live on the other side of the Atlantic. I look forward to watching more of your videos; & on the basis of this presentation, I am seriously considering becoming a subscriber. Almost 50 years ago I learned many rustic handcrafts when my family lived in the Southeastern Appalachian mountains in the USA. We now live in the Deep South. In my earlier years I was privileged to visit England, Ireland, & Scotland from which some of my ancestors migrated to America; others possibly came from Sweden or Switzerland. I am very blessed to discover your channel. May God bless you & yours!
Ben, that was beautiful.
Physics, Musicology, Culture and bushcraft, all in one.
Bravo.
I've never seen this done with a sycamore, only willow. I've actually heard this style called a "Willow Whistle". Thanks for posting, it's been about 35-40 years since I've seen one made.
My granddad made one for me when i was a boy. I just looked this up because im going to attempt it for my kids on our next camping trip. Thank you
My Grandpa 1886 to 1983 taught me to use a knife to make wood whistles when I was 7. He had this exact method!
Childhood memories came alive thanks to you, thank you
Thanks great so pleased you enjoyed it many thanks cheers Ben
After determining your location, I immediately made my decision tio subscribe. It was 1970 or 1971 that I participated in a preaching mission to Great Britain. I was fortunate to be assigned to an incredibly quaint village by the name of Crishall. The family with whom I stayed were delightful and very hospitable. The gentleman of the house was a farmer, church musician, & also tended an orchard. Most likely, the time of my visit preceded your birth. As a new subscriber, I look forward to learning much from you & your wife: experimenting with new skills and/or refreshing former skills. Thank you again, and may God bless you & yours!
Wet your whistle! That's cool!
That's magic!
I feel the same way man, only the bark tapping and twisting I remembered. You’re bringing back some of my best memories 👌🏻
When you tested the whistle the songbirds responded!
Great it was a lovely time of the year
@@BenOrford I envy you living in such a beautiful country. And you said it was May - in other words Summer, yet you're still able to wear long sleees! Amazing.
Nice one 👍 and I was the 1000th person to give this a thumbs up
Well that’s fantastic so pleased you enjoyed it and congratulations on being the 1000th appreciative person 🎉👍
wow thanks never knew wet your whistle come from that thank you for sharing
Thank you!❤
Miss these types of video with the nomad hopfully more to come soon all the best 😊
Thanks! This video was great, straight to the point and a good explanation of how to maintain its sound!
Very cool project and great idea
Thanks a lot so pleased you enjoyed the video and the project. cheers Ben
That is incredible!!!
That’s awesome bro! I’m going to give this a go
So Fantastic!
Awesome 😎. Now I have a good craft project this weekend with the grandkids. Thanks Ben
Fantasic
Thank you so much
It works for the first time
Sick I’ll share that with my dad
He had my attention at "we don't want to split the end of our whistle"
That’s awesome 😎
Magnificent. Great thing to make. Great video 😁😁🦘👍
Thanks Andrew so pleased you enjoyed it 👍
BRAVO SIR, BRAVO!
Well done sir.
Очень интересный нож! Пожалуй сделаю себе что то подобное. Обожаю работу сканди спусков по дереву - что нибудь выстругивать из дерева. Универсальней ножа не бывает.)
Awesome. Thanks Ben. I was looking for a quick "make" for a scout camp I'm visiting end of May
Great well this should be perfect for them to try 👍
How lovely! My nephew likes carving branches. May get him to try thus 😊 Can you make one using most types of wood? Apple? Cherry? Etc.
So cool!! :)
Very cool
Thanks a lot 👍
great!
thanks
Can you make them from a London Plane tree? (a type of sycamore)
All the native trees in my country are very much hardwoods without any kind of bark like that and therefore utterly unsuitable :/ I wish I were where you are!
thanks so much for this wonderful video! Is it possible to do this at other times of the year (like now!) or only around May? Thanks!
Well you will be able to do it with willow if you soak it for a day or so in some water but it’s easier in the summer. So pleased you enjoyed the video. cheers Ben
nice
That is a nice knife and you showcased it well Ben. One day - sight - I'll raise the funds to buy one!
Wish there was a government grant I could apply for to buy one of these beauties! :)
Thanks for showing a very sharp well made tool and your craftsmanship.
Best Gray
Is it possible to do this any time of the year?
i was excited, but it didn't work. the bark never came off and it just eventually chipped and peeled. I did everything right.
Are you trying to do it at this time of year? If so you need to wait till the spring flush and sap is rising.
This time of year the bark won’t come off at all. Hope that helps cheers Ben
Ben, what kind of folding knife was you using to carve the whistle?
Hi Larry this was one of our Uk legal Nomad friction folders. They are available to order on our website. There is a link in the description
Many thanks cheers Ben
which knive are you using?
This is one of our Nomad united kingdom legal friction folders.
I’ll add a link to one like mine 👍

Nice knife what is it
Can you do this with Pine. I don’t know my trees very well but I do know I have a lot of pine trees around
I think the bark would be an issue. Willow works well
Not familiar with this style whistle. Very helpful.
Great stuff glad we have shown you something new.
cheers Ben
I’ve just tryed this and failed couldn’t get it to separate I think I was using maybe wrong tree
Well if it’s a bit dry you will struggle.
Try willow or sycamore for the best results or even soak it overnight in some water 👍
@@BenOrford I’ll trim another one off this was sycamore I’ll soak it and try again thanks Ben 👌
What knife is that?
I always thought wetting the whistle meant something else 🤣🤔😉
What kind of that
что за нож?
Please stop hurting trees...
🗿
Yeah, it's not like they grow on trees
YOU MAKE EXCELLENT VIDEOS, YOUR KNIVES ARE FANTASTIC AND ESPECIALLY, THIS FOLDING KNIFE THAT THE SHEPHERDS USED TO HAVE IT. ANOTHER FOLDING KNIFE LIKE THIS THAT I HAVE SEEN IS FROM THE SVORD, FROM NEW ZEALAND. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT YOUR KNIVES ARE NOT IN GREECE AND THEY ARE A BIT EXPENSIVE.
