The stupidest thing about the crash at 6:20 is that prost clearing turns in onto senna, and in 2020 that would easily be a worse penalty then cutting the chicane after restarting your car. It literally decided the campionship!!!
The BT55 was an epic failure, it destroyed Brabham and Murray's F1 career. Theres even a letter to McLaren leadership (Dennis/Whitnarsh) denouncing the lies spread by Murray and published in the book MP4/4 a technical appraisal. Gordon Murray had no hand or input in the development of the MP4/4 neither the MP4/5.
I follow F1 since the early 80's and I've never seen a more dominant car than the FW14B, the car "from another planet". IMO, what made the mp4/4 the most successful car, it has to do with the vision of the McLaren team to hire 2 top drivers and not define a #1 and #2 driver, but let them free to race on track and 'may the best one win'. However, in Williams, by adopting the '#1 driver culture', putting all priority in Mansell, and hiring a 'not top driver' as a #2 driver... the Williams team lost the chance to make history (even though, the Lion alone won *9 races* and pole in ALL BUT 2 races in that year... Pretty astounding.) . . . OK, we all know Mansell required it on contract. Otherwise he would retire.
If Mercedes and the W12 or W11B (I don't know how they are going to name the car obviously) do not produce a more dominant car for 2022,then I think the MP4/4 will remain the greatest of all time. However never say never in F1. You litteraly never know what is going to happen. Great video mate!

Senna became world champion only when he drove the fastest car in the field, 1988, 1990, 1991. And in 1990 when he drove the fastest car, he barely managed to win the championship by intentionally crashing into Prost, who drove a slower Ferrari. When Senna drove the second fastest car in the field, 1992 and 1993, he was so much slower than the drivers with the fastest cars, that he had no chance of competing for the championship. In 1992 rookie Schumacher, in his first full year in F1, driving for the fist time on most of that year’s circuits, in a slower Benetton with manual gearbox, finished the season ahead of veteran Senna who drove a faster McLaren with automatic gearbox.
I don't know if it's so much the car, they're the best pairing of all time, absurdly talented pairing, it'd take a pairing of Schumi & Lewis to compare talentwise... and even then they'd have to be at their peak. If you put Senna & Prost in the 2014-2016 Mercedes cars, I'd say in 1 of those 3 years they'd better that accomplishment.
2 laps from perfection...never happened before or since. Now that seasons are almost 50% more races now 22 races vs 16 races back in the 80s it is even more likely that mp 4/4 dominance will never be equalled.
@lolosity314 when rb19 routinely laps anyone not on the podium like the mp 4/4 did in 1988 then they can sit at the same table. Look up the race results from the 88 season to see just how dominant they were....the mp 4/4 in the hands of senna and prost was MIND BLOWINGLY DOMINANT.
@@frankwaugh1894 you don’t get points for lapping people. Also, I don’t even need to look up the race results for that season to know they weren’t better that rb so far. If we take into account that Perez is absolutely shocking, the car couldn’t have performed better this season.
I do not understand how this idea of the MP4/4 having the most success of any F1 car can be stated, when the ALFA Romeo 158/159 Alfetta won EVERY RACE IT ENTEED between 1946 and 1951 Silverstone GP!!!! In the first 2 years of F1 it was on the podium of every single race. It won every race of the 1950 inaugural season. F1 started in 1950, not later....
Well technically in 1950 it won 6 out of the 7 races because of the Indy 500. So I'm going my a % of races won per season, in which case the MP4/4 comes out on top 👍
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast True, though of course it didn't enter the Indy 500 and neither did any other F1 team. You can't win races you don't enter...so a % win rate has to be on races entered. But the McLaren was a fine car indeed.
RB19 might've beaten it, but probably it won't be as iconic, cause it's just the continuation of RB18 championship winning car, therefore it was Max Verstappen's third championship winning car, whereas the MP4/4 was the first McLaren powered by Honda, Ayrton Senna's first McLaren and his first championship winning car oh and that Marlboro livery too
Red Bull RB19 has won more races than Red Bull RB9 and Mercedes W11, and it's about to win even more races than McLaren MP4/4, Ferrari F2002, Ferrari F2004, Mercedes W10, Mercedes W05, Mercedes W06, Red Bull RB18 and Mercedes W07 this year! (Update: After winning the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Red Bull RB19 has scored 21 wins out of 22 races and with it the winning percentage of 95.45%, therefore dethroning McLaren MP4/4 as "the most dominant F1 car" after 35 years)
I adore the MP4/4 but it is a bit of stretch to label it the "Greatest F1 Car". There have been some pretty decent candidates over the decades. The Brabham BT19, the Lotus 72, the Williams FW07 and the Williams FW15C could all lay claim to being the greatest rear engined F1 cars of the 20th Century. The Ferrari F2003 is probably the greatest of the 21st Century cars. And probably the greatest F1 car ever built. As an Australian, I will always have a soft spot for the BT19 and the Williams FW07. Cheers from the Land Down Under.
I don't think it was the most dominant car in F1 history. The real deal was the most dominant drivers line up. Imagine 2021 season with Max and Lewis in Red Bull opposite to Perez and Bottas in the Mercedes team.
With a 95.45% winning percentage over the 93.75% winning percentage of McLaren MP4/4, Red Bull RB19 has officially dethroned the former to become "the most dominant F1 car" after 35 years!
6:31 Wrong, wrong, very wrong... if Senna won the 1989 Japanese Gp he wasn't champion yet... and another thing if this video is about the Mp4/4 (the greatest F1 car ever) why do you talk about the Mp4/5 (1989)?
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast I was referring to near the end of your video, you mentioned the FW14 without using the “B”. I don’t dispute which car is statistically at the top of the bunch.
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast what a shame that Prost had to put up with those rules. He would have been a 6 maybe 7 times world champion if that top 10 results rule didn’t exist. And in a time when he was competing against Senna, Lauda, Mansell, Piquet, Rosberg et al. And they were all his teammates aside from Piquet. The most underrated driver in history and easily one of the GOAT. Mansell left Ferrari only because he was out driven by Prost every single race. In 1988 he beat senna on points and yet he still lost the championship even though he only won one less race then senna. He beat senna in 1989 even though Honda were favouring senna and giving senna all of the technical support. He lost the championship in 1984 by half a point against Niki Lauda due to the Monaco gp being stopped and only half points being awarded. Had he came second to senna at Monaco, he would have won the championship. And yet the Prost haters will say that Prost wanted the race stopped just so he could win. Which is a load of crap because Prost was only thinking of the safety of the drivers in those horrific conditions. And Stefan Bellof was catching senna faster than what senna was catching Prost. So, senna was probably going to be taken by Bellof had the race kept going. Senna was an incredible one lap wonder. Prost was the ultimate race driver!

@@TheMotorMouthPodcast I was referring to near the end of your video, you mentioned the FW14 without using the “B”. I don’t dispute which car is statistically at the top of the bunch.

Prost had more points than senna and senna still won the wc. Completely wrong.
That was because only the top 10 results were factored into the championship 👍
