  • Wait, Sections are only in SketchUp, right? Well... technically, yes, you can only PLACE Sections in SketchUp, but if you know where to click-like Tyson does-Sections can be a powerful LayOut tool that will let you take your drawings to another level!

I believe it would be great, since both scenes and styles can be "partial" like that (you don't have to save everything with them), that it would make sense if at least layout (but sketchup could do that too) allowed you to kinda stack them. Such that I could for example select a couple styles, put them in order (if multiple styles override the same parameter, the last one would win, but for all the other parameters that are perhaps overridden by just a single style or scene, they would just be merged). Same could potentially be done with scenes.
That would be a great help, because I could have say, a set of scenes that only store the camera position. Then I could have a bunch of styles that each do a different "concept" if you will. And my "view" could be that I select a scene (or even scenes) and styles and I put them in order, and sketchup and layout would just merge and override the settings to come up with the result.
To make it somewhat simple, we could potentially just call these "scene sets" and "style sets" and they would sit where all of the plain scenes and styles sit. But they would be different in that instead of storing the resulting values, they would contain the ordered lists of scenes and styles and if you changed some of the input scenes or styles, these would update automatically (since their values are calculated).

Thanks again for the amazing tips. I had mentioned that I was having trouble with scenes on the forum and I feel like you guys are doubling down on the video tips thanks.

Thanks Tyson, this is very useful workflow to help standardise drawing output.
Love the Grey line style can you let me have the setting please.

You can change your edge color in the Styles menu under 'Edit' section.

Thanks for your tutorial. Please read and pass along the following request for Layout:
Can we update Layout (LO) with these requests:
    • Snapping improvements (although moving node is great!).
    • Sketchup (SU) like inference for drawing lines (LO is subtly different).
    • Components like SU.
    • Fillet, Chamfer & Extend like Autocad.
    • Vector hatches - the ability to change line weights of lines in hatches.
    • The ability to scale line weights universally inside groups by a single factor.
    • Add multileader notes.
    • The ability to set the horizontal length of a note leader’s as standard & to stay when moving.
    • Editing notes/leaders is not as intuitive as most other things in SU & LO. (To be fair, this is a problem in all software programs I’ve ever used)
    • Prevent notes from shifting in location once editing is initiated.
    • Improve printer drivers
    • Shape/fill/stroke selection refinement in terms of clarity in which you are editing.
    • File size reduction and/or ease in subdividing drawings into separate files.
    • The ability to turn on/off auto gluing to the ends of lines.
    • Flexibility to apply lines (& line-weights) only to selected edges of a fill. I.e. multiple sides without strokes
    • Native Section Cut hatches by material (maybe back-face toggle on/off for material as well) as part of SU but live & editable in LO.
    • Custom Style folder location does not show in Style within the SketchUp Model Tray in LO.
    • A cloud/revision line within Layout. Maybe even a Revision management system.
    • LO plugins.
    • Paste in Place or paste attach to cursor
    • When you right click a scene in LO to open in SU, it should open to that scene.
    • Color by Layer in LO (Similar to Color by Tag in SU)
    • Layout Warehouse (like SU Model) especially for Scrapbook details.
    • Browser type navigation inside pattern selection window.
    • Stop the incessant signing in.
    • Ortho on and off (F8)
    • The ability to control dash start position
    • The ability to change a views scale and clipping mask together.
    • The ability to embed views into scaled drawings.
    • Linked text or spreadsheets cannot be edited inside LO. If an edit is attempted then the associated program auto opens for editing so that the link is not broken.
    • The ability to resize the scrapbook preview window
    • Function to allow text (after being typed) to be retroactively converted from lower case to upper case or vice versa.
    • Right click - convert shapes (rectangles etc.) to curve. Instead of having to cut then weld.
    • Move pattern origin keeping the shape in place.
    • Create a clipping mask for scaled drawings like with Sketchup views.
    • Cannot nudge points and lines with the keyboard. Only objects.

Great feedback, but probably not the best place to post. Head over to our forum (forums.sketchup.com) and post in the Feature Request area. Unfortunately, we video-grunts are not directly connected to product development, so you are more likely to get the attention of the right people over there!

@@SketchUp I figured that may be the case. I take the opportunity to share our running list any chance I get with anyone slightly affiliated with SU/LO. You video-grunts keep up the good work!

Be good to control active section cuts in layout for speed 😊

That would be great, and even more useful for some of us would be to be able to set up the section cuts inside layout.

What you showed makes no sense. What you should have shown was different styles for the same scenes. This is confusing.
