  • Namid is a character that I rigged for the University of Central Florida production "Dreamweaver." Early during character design, we established that our character needed to wear a dress. We had the tools, and decided that we wanted to use Maya nCloth. I spent a lot of time researching and testing before I came up with a method of attaching the cloth to a character rig. This video represents just a fraction of the time that I spent on this project. I had a ton of fun learning about cloth, and look forward to getting better at using it in the future!

All of the cloth that we applied to the film would not have been possible without the help of two of my classmates: Samantha Sokolis and Kelly Herbut.

Oh, so that’s why all the Disney tests for Zootopia and Brave had the legs sticking out of the clothes, they weren’t nclothed, they were still skinned!

Fascinating process. Why skin instead of going directly to the cloth though?

Hi! Awesome tutorial!! Thank you for sharing tips. But, I have a little question. Is the size '0.075' you refered at 00:13 important number? Or does it just mean "small figures"? When following your video, there was an error in the overlaid cloth especially armpit. I don't know what's wrong. Namid dosen't look wiggling so I just want to know what's different from your character. I'm still struggling with that error..
I would really appreciate it if you would leave me an answer!!

Awesome rig. Is there more tips on skinning skin tight clothing. No matter how I paint weights, it penetrates the skin

One way to compensate for clipping involves creating extra controllers on the clothing that animators can use to pull the clothing back out when it clips through the body. You won't get a perfect result from skinning alone, and most productions render out clothing on a separate layer, in case they need to comp over stuff like that.

How do you match the 1st frame of simulation after animating the character

    • @jessiewrubel6371

Typically you can add a buffer of frames before simulation. If the animators are starting on frame 1000, you can start your cloth sim on frame 900 or so. This gives 100 frames for the cloth to settle, before reacting to the character animation.

set your workplace to the "rigging" workplace in the drop down menu in the top right (by default this is set to "modeling") and then you'll find a new tab at the top called "skin" where you can find "bind skin." then you can select your root joint and your mesh and skin them.
