Vector is basically a type of image that is made up of lines and shapes, rather than a raster image which is made up of lots of little dots (pixels). For animation it often means that you can control whole parts of the character at one, like instead of having to redraw the whole arm when it moves, you can just have the computer rotate it all at once
It should be noted that even if you are a CG or stop motion animator, drawing skills are still incredibly useful, because you need to be able to plan what you animate first. And the best way to plan animation and search for poses is just to quickly draw the character
Yeah, but better need to be careful with some bad cartoons (e.g. TTG, Pickle and Peanut, etc.) These shows were lazily animated. But if you want to make your series great, create some plots for the episode, then add some complex personalities and traits for your character, balanced out the humor, etc. This will make your animation great and someday, your show will be popular as heck.
im currently studying animation and they teach us all these types, but i personally prefer traditional or 2d animation because i feel drawing is one of my stronger skills. However, my favourite form of animation is a mixture of traditional, 2d, and 3d witch actually, wasn't mentioned in this video. this form of animation is mostly used an Japanese films or some newer anime. in this form of animation, the characters are animated traditionally then translated to computers to be coloured and edited digitally. still backgrounds are almost always hand painted traditionally or digitally, and backgrounds that move or rotate are made in 3d. some moving objects, plants, and people moving in the background are also animated in 3d. then finally everything everything everything is composited together and special effects are added in.
Yes, I think he tried to explain it in a briefer way. So that there was an over all cover of each type, but I also believe he didn't cover a few things.. I always did see 2D animation as a more traditional form, the version of it where they use flash to create this look is just rising to popularity with some these days. I for one am not a big fan of flash. Understandable
Boo chan Great! Now how are you going to get a job out of that? These things are not common jobs like jobs at Walmart, McDonalds, dealership, school, Fort Knox, etc. There are a lot of people with degrees for this, and not many jobs. Dreams with no backup. It's like trying to put a gallon of water through a straw in just *one* second. Get a practical skill-set. One that will pay well, and are *available*. For example: welding!
Occasionally, you will have certain types of animation combined. CGI used in Attack On Titan worked surprisingly well in a 2D environment. If anything, it worked to give the scenes a sense of unnerving action that totally worked for a show about giant, hideous creatures that eat humans and have completely unknown origins. Nice video! - Kade the Kontent Kop

For 3d art and animation, there is artistic skill required for modeling the mesh, texturing/sculpting phase, and even for animation. People are too quick to dismiss 3d animation as "the computer does it all". That's far from the truth. The computer can aid in a lot of things, but you need solid artists behind it all for it to look good.
Xyos212 And job opportunities are slim at best. Not a good career choice if you want to be part of Disney of Dreamworks. Might get stuck with doing tiny things in small-time movies.
I have finished my B.sc Degree in Multimedia... looking forward for Animation course now. Ofcourse colleges doesnt impact much but degrees in india is necessary, self learning is what everyone needs... Thanks to youtube and social networks for helping me always
I totally agree with you Degrees in India still hold value from job perspective. Self learning helps you upgrade yourself and quickly learn any skill you desire. As someone who is is curious about animation and wants to get started platform like TH-cam helps a lot. Learning animation is easier than ever.
Maya is a really hard 3-D animation program. I took the basic Maya class in my college. But I wasn't allowed to be a Digital Animation major because I had already completed a degree in Visual arts and the college won't let you dual major or get a second degree. I find this very stupid because you need to know how to draw to create any type of animation and having a visual arts degree makes you so much better at digital animation.
Probably college makes Maya harder to learn than it really is because in order to grade students, they skip over the absolute basics and assign projects that are on an intermediate level. College instructors aren't allowed to give A grades to everybody. They have to give out Cs,Ds and Fs. Granted, I got a B+ in the Maya 1 class that I did take.
I think it's also important to note that all of these are valid animation types, no single one is inherently better or worse than the others, and that they can all be used for artistic expression.
Fantastic overview of the five types of animation! Your clear explanations and engaging examples make it easy to understand the distinct characteristics and applications of each type.
Its sad that videos like this that actually teach you something interesting get less views and attention than stupid food challenges or some other idiotic form of showing off money and wasting everyones time. This helped a lot!
I started with 3d animation, but lately I've been going more and more over to traditional. Take so much time making different characters in 3d, and I wanted to learn how to draw. Still not super good at drawing, but all the time saved by not having to model, texture and rig a character is worth the struggle with drawing. As I can just go straight to animating.
cel animation is for sure my favorite i don't know if it's my bias of more challenging things being better or the colours being more striking to me that made me come to that conclusion
The reason I love mostly 3d animation is that you can get super high quality filled with detail scenes at solid 60+ fps without worrying. Also I love traditional animation, but when it's done with way more frames per second - at least 24. This creates very smooth and pleasing to look at animation, but is so time consuming I understand why it's not done usually
This was a great video, all this time I was thinking about taking classes in animation where I will be learning things like body mechanics which I am not really interested, now I know to look out for classes in motion graphics. I think you may have saved me thousands of dollars in tuition. Thanks.
I don't know what I should go for. Animation, or Concept artist? I'm very intrigued by the idea of animation and how you can bring pictures to life, but at the same time i feel like i don't have enough patience sometimes. Concept artist is mainly just drawing stuff, which is my area of expertise. Like I want to draw characters and settings for video games and movies.
Dont know what you guys are going on about, but I have an idea for an animated TH-cam video approximately 6 minutes long I'd like to make for someone in the style of 1:45- 2:00. I don't know anything about art or making videos. Can anyone point me in the right direction..?
Before digital they did the same as stop motion, took a picture of every frame in sequence, compositing the different cells to create the finished frame. Nowadays they generally scan each frame, or simply paint directly on a tablet (thus having it saved on the computer directly).
They scan it now but before scanners they used to take a picture of each frame on 35mm film. They would cut the frames they don't want and then they would connect all the 35mm rolls that they are going to use in the right order
+hyperx72 the other one was more of a test for another type of shadows....ofcourse i wanted to make it fast since it was a test, it seems people didnt really enjoy it, so i am going to make something with the same style of burning of the fire...acctually the story behind the second one is that mr. ugli once died, but his molecules are always there ( represented by a plant growing ), also his cause of death was life ( a blue piston like machine that squeezed ugli ), there was also another meaning behind the beggining, when you,ve seen a stickman change into some sort strange thing, it acctually meant character developement. now he will have to repeat it.
It's not just a drawing. Character animation is great art form of bringing your characters to life. It's not just something moving across the screen. You're drawing life. Every character animator can agree that it's not a flat image bouncing up and down. Animation is the illusion of life, and creating your own world. Which is why so many "animators" today miss that.
Awesome video. Thank you so much for this feedback. I'm currently working in IT and have decided to go back to school. I miss my creative side and felt either Graphic Design or Animation would be ideal. Though like in any type of work, there are times work can be tedious but I strongly believe animation is the way to go. Motion Graphics is catching my attention!
Do you think there will ever be another form of animation? My guess is that there will be 3d movies where you choose the view angle and can explore the world, sort of like a video game
sorrow the greninja assassin I do both forms and I've really taken a liking to both. I sometimes prefer 2d because of the immense setup time for stop motion but I still love both
You just made me understand something that has been a mystery for me far too long because I was always wandering why these animations are different and now I know why thank you. But know I am thinking how would Naruto look if it was made in 3D animation, it would lose some of its prime. Can you make a video of the advantage of each type and where it is mostly useful and helpful. Thank you, subscribed!!
My favorite types of animation are 2D computer animation, stop motion, and CGI. I also like traditional animation, but I'm pretty picky and only like it done a certain way. I love 3D computer graphics, and I'm currently learning how to do computer generated imagery and animation. I believe not one type of animation is better than the other. They all have their pros and their cons. Animation takes talent to master, and there's really no easy ticket to creating a masterpiece. This is my opinion. Go ahead and feel free to disagree.
flash tupi and 2d anaimtions ruel those traditional ones take like years to make if you were to make a movie and time was a matter of distance it would take ten thoousand light years
Traditional drawing is my favorite. I want to study 2d animation in university. Why? Because it includes drawing not like sculpting in 3D and I think I find it more artistic. Exp: over the garden wall, persapolis, the prophet, code geass.
You're a great teacher you give us so much and great info in a short period of time while giving homework which is actually interesting 1st is desturated 2nd is more warmer (not sure on this one) And 3rd is complementary colour scheme or group thanks
I respect everyone who can do those but- I respect SOOOO much the people that do stop motion and traditional animation. Like god I would never survive the time it consumes to do all of it XD I used to do stop motion as a kid. Like with playboy you know ? I’d make a dinosaur thing and a snake move around and fight cars XD using ketchup as blood haha. But that was only for gun the people who do this professionally have my best respect. It takes a lot of time and that’s impressive.
"3D animation is just called animation be cause it is just the most popular" While 80% of world animation is based in Japan, where they still use 2D lol, thx for the info.
Hi, your work is amazing I like very much the idea that being a person with a different language, which is English, use subtitles regrettable mind in Spanish this information is very little for the people that we like this world of animation, appreciate your time and greetings I hope read and view everything that has for its audience.
I love stop motion because movies like coraline and one of the greatest stop motion movie ever @nightmare before Christmas is just plain beautiful and I appreciate each and every one of the artists who has done stop motion because that shyt takes FOREVRRRRRRR! ❤️
If it's done well, it looks great, but I can't ignore the number of times that badly done vector has ended up looking cheap because it looked like one picture being warped around - in essence, that's what vector animation is, however, it takes some skill to make it not look like that, lol.
I would have done the categorizing differently. - Frame based: Where you have to create every frame by hand. Sub categories would be traditional or stop motion you mentioned. - Keyframe: Where objects are rigged and you specify key frames. Key frames are then interpolated to create smooth animations. (2d and 3d in this video) - Physics based animations (you forgot this one): Where motion is calculated using physics. Think of explosions, smoke and water but also simple movements like throwing a rock. Common in blockbusters and games.
I do traditional animation on an app called FlipaClip but I make my videos only about 12-24 frames long because one, I get exausted after drawing 24 pictures of the same thing, and two, they only allow videos to be 6 seconds long. If someone wants to make longer videos, they will have to pay for that, which I am not going to do. If I have a chance and if I am EVER going to be a professional animator, I will probably want to do 2d animation because it seems more simple than traditional animation. 3D looks cool too.
Theory and practice makes you good. Keep reading and drawing and looking at good art, and stay humble, and you'll become better and better at drawing! :)
so being a traditional animator is frame by frame but being a 2D animator is cut out? Since I've been calling myself a 2D animator but I draw frame by frame sooooo I should call myself a traditional animator? I use a tablet btw
I do traditional animation.its actually not as grueling as it sounds. It’s pretty easy and even fun. I want to be an animator and have my own movie studio someday.
3D animation most require you to work to put life in your character, you won't be drawing unless you are in 2D, you can take a look at animation mentor, they focus alot of basic animation principles
My story: got some very creative, amusing ideas but my drawing is not so good but i want to animate!! Tell me a way where can i do animation? And I am just 15 years old
you know what would be cool... a animation white board that can connect to computers. basically u can draw on the white board and press a button or something to add a frame
I absolutely enjoyed watching this video! I love how you explained everything in precise detail concerning how computer animation (along with the other modes of animation) is done! Highly informative!!! 10/10 ⭐!!!!!

This is a great review of all the various types of animation!
My real question is, how do they put traditional animations on film? Take a picture? Just film the papers? Wut?!
they scan it
Before digital they did the same as stop motion, took a picture of every frame in sequence, compositing the different cells to create the finished frame.
Nowadays they generally scan each frame, or simply paint directly on a tablet (thus having it saved on the computer directly).

+hyperx72 the other one was more of a test for another type of shadows....ofcourse i wanted to make it fast since it was a test, it seems people didnt really enjoy it, so i am going to make something with the same style of burning of the fire...acctually the story behind the second one is that mr. ugli once died, but his molecules are always there ( represented by a plant growing ), also his cause of death was life ( a blue piston like machine that squeezed ugli ), there was also another meaning behind the beggining, when you,ve seen a stickman change into some sort strange thing, it acctually meant character developement. now he will have to repeat it.
gatinator animator.corp They are beautiful not crap
WOW Thank you so much for putting everything together! This is super helpful!
Do you think there will ever be another form of animation? My guess is that there will be 3d movies where you choose the view angle and can explore the world, sort of like a video game
Some youtube videos already have that function. If youre on a pc just look on the starting page on the left where it says 360* videos:)
+RealMadnez I don't really think that's a new genre in animation...
+Charlie Ringström For me, it's not a new kind of animation but an extension of 3d
Yeah, agreed!
Vasco2024 That is a badass idea...
I love 2D and stop
stop motion
sorrow the greninja assassin I do both forms and I've really taken a liking to both. I sometimes prefer 2d because of the immense setup time for stop motion but I still love both
FlorbenGorben ok, that good to know there people with the same thoughts.
Yea no prob
You just made me understand something that has been a mystery for me far too long because I was always wandering why these animations are different and now I know why thank you. But know I am thinking how would Naruto look if it was made in 3D animation, it would lose some of its prime. Can you make a video of the advantage of each type and where it is mostly useful and helpful. Thank you, subscribed!!
we make 2D animation for kids. cheers
That's a stupid stereotype
Lmao their videos
Stereotypes...
Well... not all animation
Dude if you want to advertise your channel this is not the right place for that. Btw animasi lu gk terlalu bagus
Please credit your sources, or at least the amature internet ones like happyness and cyanide and domics
"hapiness and cynide"? lololol
Amateur? Lol
yeah cyanide and happiness and domics
That's me at 6:10!
I knew it! I knew there was domics in here! frickin LOVE domics......
Go ahead and feel free to disagree.
my favorite is 2D and 3D but they're cgi because I will make them on computer
Best introduction to Animation i have ever seen , thank you
I love traditional animation. To anyone going into the field who loves traditional animation as much as me, let's give it a major comeback!
Yeah!!
5 types of animations:
1)-Lazy
2)-Determined
3)-Stolen
4)-Hated
5)-Minecraft Animation
Minecraft animation is the worst
@@HamoTheUltimate

Do you mean MC animation is worse of Fortshit is worse?
Cause I'm telling you now, it's the latter.
I meant that fortnite animation is worse
Am I the only one who prefers traditional animation?
No, you're not. I too grew up with traditional hand drawn animation. and that will always be the BEST.
It's clearly better!
You not the only one
flash tupi and 2d anaimtions ruel those traditional ones take like years to make if you were to make a movie and time was a matter of distance it would take ten thoousand light years
Of course not! I wish I could do traditional.
Traditional drawing is my favorite. I want to study 2d animation in university. Why? Because it includes drawing not like sculpting in 3D and I think I find it more artistic. Exp: over the garden wall, persapolis, the prophet, code geass.
me too but unlike what you thinking because i wanna to learn 2D and 3D using a computer not in papers
Traditional and 2D is not the same thing though traditional is hand drawn and 2D is from a computer or some sort of technology
You're a great teacher you give us so much and great info in a short period of time while giving homework which is actually interesting
1st is desturated
2nd is more warmer (not sure on this one)
And 3rd is complementary colour scheme or group thanks
I respect everyone who can do those but- I respect SOOOO much the people that do stop motion and traditional animation. Like god I would never survive the time it consumes to do all of it XD
I used to do stop motion as a kid. Like with playboy you know ? I’d make a dinosaur thing and a snake move around and fight cars XD using ketchup as blood haha. But that was only for gun the people who do this professionally have my best respect. It takes a lot of time and that’s impressive.
My favourite:
1. Traditional Animation
2. Stopmotion
3. Computer Animation
4. Motion graphics
5. Flash animation
Gfh
My disney movie will be tradintional animation
"3D animation is just called animation be cause it is just the most popular"
While 80% of world animation is based in Japan, where they still use 2D lol,
thx for the info.
I think he is referring to non-japanese animation

Thanks for such an informative and FULL of DETAILS video.
I make traditional animation but I do them at 30fps at all times, finding out that 24 is the max in most professional works has left me baffled.
Hi, your work is amazing I like very much the idea that being a person with a different language, which is English, use subtitles regrettable mind in Spanish this information is very little for the people that we like this world of animation, appreciate your time and greetings I hope read and view everything that has for its audience.
Who else is studying animation? :-)

@@geboinzki.iman2828 yes

ok... so?
"Flash is cheap and easy to use."
2d animation (vector) all the way, man.
I agree! Woop woop! XD
(2d and 3d in this video)
- Physics based animations (you forgot this one): Where motion is calculated using physics. Think of explosions, smoke and water but also simple movements like throwing a rock. Common in blockbusters and games.
So exciting with traditional animation
hey can you credit your sources?
where is credit to the video makers?

Me: **war flashbacks**
I do traditional animation on an app called FlipaClip but I make my videos only about 12-24 frames long because one, I get exausted after drawing 24 pictures of the same thing, and two, they only allow videos to be 6 seconds long. If someone wants to make longer videos, they will have to pay for that, which I am not going to do. If I have a chance and if I am EVER going to be a professional animator, I will probably want to do 2d animation because it seems more simple than traditional animation. 3D looks cool too.
awesome video, this will help explain to the people who have NO IDEA
6th type of animation- Flipaclip
I think thats in traditional animation.
flipaclip is terrible

but I'm not really good though (I think)
It's okay, keep going on! You'll be better and better : )
tinglesound Thank you :)
Theory and practice makes you good. Keep reading and drawing and looking at good art, and stay humble, and you'll become better and better at drawing! :)
Ezy Teri Reddy thank you ^^ I am actually improving little by little :D
Colorless World what you make effort and creativity into is art :)
so being a traditional animator is frame by frame but being a 2D animator is cut out?
Since I've been calling myself a 2D animator but I draw frame by frame sooooo I should call myself a traditional animator? I use a tablet btw
+DuSky Glider guess it depends if your using something like flash or anime pro studio... what studio do you use ?
Kuroi Sora toon boom 12 at the moment
DuSky Glider Have you seen Saga of Rex by Michel Gagne (hope I got the name right)? It was made with Toon Boom Harmony...
I do traditional animation.its actually not as grueling as it sounds. It’s pretty easy and even fun. I want to be an animator and have my own movie studio someday.
I watch this video over and over again
I'm not good at painting 🎨 can I become a 3d animator
Both painting and 3d animating take work to get good enough to work professionally, I’d choose the one you have more passion for
3D animation most require you to work to put life in your character, you won't be drawing unless you are in 2D, you can take a look at animation mentor, they focus alot of basic animation principles
In 3d animation your gonna have to 3d model your character
My story: got some very creative, amusing ideas but my drawing is not so good but i want to animate!!
Tell me a way where can i do animation? And I am just 15 years old
