oh man, I am SO excited. I've been wanting learn Loomis' method for about a year. I've watched tons of videos, including some great ones from Proko, but I still need some help. These lessons are priceless. thanks for making this!!
Hey Brad, I have been watching these beginning vids as part of my daily practice, for a few weeks. It reminds of going to music class trying impress people with my speedy riffs and my teacher telling me:" great, but can you play Bach Sarabande? " hmm..ne.."how about a few scales slowly..hmm..couldnt do it, Miles?...then you start all over....play a tone at a time an make it mean something...this is really hard ,but necessary foundations for those who haven't done it..I would strongly urge anybody wanting to do drawing to stick with it for a year to the point when you look at the result after a coffee break and it still looks ok, your eye has now been trained to see properly, something beginners dont know, including me....thanks Brad, really great work
Hi Bradwynn, great video as always. I believe that all the Loomis books are available as a free download. I purchased his Figure Drawing For All Its Worth book and it has the head exercises in it as well. Yes! Please do more of these videos. Thank you!
It's wonderful watching you draw, you make it look simple and inspiring. I had an old Loomis book I found at a garage sale - Figure Drawing For All It's Worth, and have a whole new respect for him. Please continue to make more videos.
Good book to have on the shelf for reference. I just need to get into it more for a regular practice. Thanks for checking out the video Patricia! This Thursday I'll post video for pg 25 in the book. I'm starting to doodle little Loomis heads during the day at work now. lol
This was very helpful and I vote for more like it. Thanks for the link to the Loomis book. I was just in Solana Bay for the week and every time the train went by I had the urge to draw. Thanks for all the great videos.
I found the online versions over a decade ago on the bring-back-loomis website, but the books were out of production until about two years ago I believe. Bought this one and 'figure drawing for all it's worth' as soon as I found out they were back in production as a personal treat. Such classics!
Just a positive feedback: If possible try to keep the canvas vertical, aligned with the reference, that way beginners like myself can relate the line angles more precisely. And thanks! Your videos help me a lot
Great idea! Thank You for this. I've found this book about a month ago. It is great but I have difficulties getting into it on my own. Mainly because I lack the discipline to do this fundamental stuff properly. Following You on this will make it so much easier. Thanks again and greetings from Poland ;)
What kind of information are you looking to gain when you do studies like this from Loomis? Just basic head construction? I have found that it is pretty difficult to copy these drawings verbatim, as simple as they are.
Loomis, then Reilly in my experience. Reilly’s good for when you already know the basic construction of the head. Haven’t tried Bridgman so I can’t say much about that one
Loomis for basic construction Reilly for rhythmic gestural drawing Bridgman for Basic constructions and learning to Render. (That's what my experience is so far)
Great video, I'm having trouble figuring out where to slice the ball on the sides, also it is very satisfying the sound that pencil makes on the paper.
Thanks! Great video! Please, consider making a video on drawing small heads for figure drawings. What to look for and all that's relevant. Mine are rubbish and I have not found a single thing to help me with this. Again, thanks.
When I do little figure sketches I keep finding I make the heads too small. I think it gets better with practice and I need to find more time to practice figure quick sketch. Are the shoulders generally 2 head lengths apart? ... I found this reference link... comicbookcreativehub.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/anatomy-Fig-1.jpg
Bradwynn Jones Thanks, very useful. Yes, sometimes I do them too small, but the worst part is the features and trying to draw a couple of lines that look like eyes or noses, etc... As a hobbyist I can more or less get a likeness in a full A5 size portrait, but when it comes to giving a head to a figure... it's very depressing. Again, thanks for your videos, I find them very instructive and illustrative at the same time.
This video was exactly what I needed. I seriously hope that you continue to make more videos from ANY of the Andrew Loomis series. I was wondering if you would ever make a video covering the hand section of the Head And Hand book?
Great to see how you tackle studying from book because to me Loomis specially is too clean and sometimes criptic, looking at your process i can see that my approach was actually correct so that puts my mind at ease :D Awesome video bud. :)
I don't think you can go wrong studying the techniques in Andrew Loomis books. I heard that the artist Alex Ross was heavily influenced by Andrew Loomis' work, which you can see in some of Alex's work.
Bradwynn Jones This one is pretty amazing and imo where you can see the Andrew Loomis influence: hangwithbigpictureframing.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/wb_20110918_un_detail.jpg
Hello bradwynn, nice to see you drawing again. I would like to give you an idea for your next drawing. Since you draw rather realisitc stuff wich seems to be your comfort zone, what would you think about, drawing a fictional character. Like Kain, the godfather of all vampires. But in your own interpretation, you can use reference fotos if you want but id much rather see you create in it in your imagination but of course its up to you. This can be very challanging, and it might turn you off^^
Wish I’d found this before buying it the other day :(. Great channel thanks. Why do you hold the pencil in that way? I’ve just started drawing again at the tender age of 54 but hold it as I would to write, is that wrong for some reason?
Great video, really like that u decided to do this book. I am total beginner and I wonder is better for me to draw with pencil or charcoal pencil sharpened like yours? 😀
104 104 if you're more interested in fine art and painting I would say to go with charcoal. I always used to draw with my wrist and after using charcoal and newsprint I found that I was actually a much easier dynamic way to draw, and even when I had a regular old pencil it was more comfortable to hold it like he does. Check out the Watts Atelier website!
Hey, I'm struggling to get the point of my pencil as sharp as yours. Ive watched your sharpening video but the tip is still not as precise as i would like it to be. Do you have any tips?
That's difficult to say. I practiced them for about 6 months before going to Watts Atelier. I could draw them from memory after a few weeks but they didn't look put together well yet. I still have trouble drawing them specially the extreme angled heads. lol
hey B Jones would you please make it a series please? I would Love to study Loomis, but since my english o is not that good... your vídeos would help a lot!!!:)
This reminds me my study sessions with Mr. Andrew Loomis, very frustrating as it was the first thing in my drawing journey if I remember correctly. Great video as always and I enjoyed it, it's nice to see your versions of Loomis heads and study workflow, keep the vids coming if possible, it's really spectacular.
u hold it this way because it gives better conrol over ur pencil, lines are smoother and u do better curves. lines are not so sharp. Holding ur pencil like u'd write is better for architecture i'd say

Thanks for the Loomis book--never too late to enjoy drawing--in another three years, I hope to be another 85-year-old Grandma Moses
Very nice video. Thank you. It helps a lot seeing someone really skilled practicing.

Loomis is the Don of Drawing. Thanks for sharing, squire
THANK YOU! Not since "Drawing on the right side of the brain" is drawing technique so usefull.
Yes, want more. Watching you was much more understandable than trying to follow static pictures.
Thank you, Bradwynn for this amazing short tutorial to simplify one of the most complicated drawing books :)
My dad learned from Loomis, and gave me his books to continue the tradition... of course we want more! :)
Thanks for sharing this video ;) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Awesome. A classic classic book meets youtube!

Almost just spit out my coffee from laughing at this!
i know this is 3 years late but

Bahahaha I just looked down at my drawing and I have drawn Nicholas Cage!,,

what would you recommend first to learn: Loomis, reilly or bridgeman?
Loomis

Hello Bradwynn, are you using a charcoal pencil or a graphite pencil? Just wondering if we can cut and hold a graphite pencil the way you are doing?
Esse livro eu encontro em Algum Site???
What website can I find this book?
🤩
i am a complete beginner of drawiing ... the advantage of this kind of holding the pencil is that the hand is not between the eyes and drawed?
Great video, really like that u decided to do this book. I am total beginner and I wonder is better for me to draw with pencil or charcoal pencil sharpened like yours? 😀
You can play around with both and see what fits you best
Thanks for watching! I think either one is fine. It's not better either way. I agree with Arke Killa. Try it out and see.

hey man , great video as always . I follow what you do in the videos, will you be doing painting videos as well ?
I found it online. I have tried this so many hours and hours and hours, for years. For some reason all I can make is long faces.
Me siento inspirado 😍
What kind of sharpener do you use?
The book is still public on Google Drive just search the title + PDF.
Thank you.
Thank you for your videos. They are really great. Could you also do a video on your favorite books for artists? Best!
Thank´s Bradwynn :) Hug
