- Hey guys!
In this video, we are drawing the human head from 15 different angles. We will be using Andrew Loomis's time-tested method and I think you will be surprised at how quickly you will understand and enjoy drawing like this. No charcoal in this one just colored pencils and your sketchbook is all you need.

58 yr old retired civil engineer here learning to draw portraits. Sir you are an excellent instructor. Thank you for this video and your calm clear instruction!
You are so welcome, I am glad the videos are helping you :)
58 year old😮
I've been struggling to find a way back into art for about a month now. I could never seem to find someone who explained it in a way that made sense to me. After watching your first video on the Loomis method, I started to grasp the concept and started working in three dimisions on my own. I can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Definitely a subscriber now.
That’s awesome! I’m glad that you’re enjoying the videos. I hope they continue to help you on your journey. Take care my friend 😊🙏🏻
you are very good teacher. because every one can be a good artist. but not every one can be a good teacher.
Thank you, I appreciate that 🙏🏻
I am a student trying to learn to draw and paint. I’ve always loved to draw as a child. Not being able to afford proper classes, I turned to TH-cam and I found you. Thank you! I’m able to learn. You break the lesson down and make it easy to understand. Thank you!!
You can do it! I'm glad you found the channel. My TH-cam offers a lot of drawing info but if you want my best classes where I give away a ton of drawing tips, tricks, and best practices then I would recommend you sign up for my Skillshare. I also have a new book coming out on June 11, 2024 that you can order. Below are the links to both, good luck on your art journey :)

I had never heard of 'The Loomis Method' but I realized that I learned to draw people from a book given me in 1986 by an artist friend who bought it in 1958. Turns out it's called "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth." by Andrew Loomis. Great text on drawing, composition and perspective. Good to see it in action now that I am back into making art 30+ years later.
Interesting! I have that book in my library as well. It is very informative :)
this video is an absolute game changer. i have seen at least 5 videos on the loomis method, and this is the best one yet. keep up the great work!
Glad it helped you 😊🙌🏻
This is so peaceful and calming, your like a Bob Ross reincarnation. Love the simple and beautiful technique as well! You earned a sub.
Wow, thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Take care 😊🙌🏻
His voice is so calming and he is simple with the instructions and takes his time… thank you… I have been trying to learn these for so long but so many videos are either too fast paced, too hard to follow along etc… thank you 🙏🏾
You're very welcome! I'm glad it was helpful :)
this might be the best teachin' i've get for practisin' loomis method, the rest little too fast, he did fifteen different gestures of head proportion and i feel like i'm a full certified artist already and i was always gettin' request on portrait portrait portraits, so now amma get 'em done fasho
Fantastic! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Your personality is infectious. Very happy I have come across your channel.
I’ve recently gotten back into drawing to destress from uni work and have to start back at the beginning and basics. Watching the videos and drawing along has been very mindful and relaxing. Thank you 😊
Ah thank you so much 😊 I’m glad that you found the channel and have started drawing again. I always try and make the videos as relaxing as possible. Hope you have fun drawing with me. Cheers!
I've never been able to draw heads... except, now I draw shapes that definitely look like they could be heads. I don't think the Louvre is waiting for my artwork, but I can't wait to do more sketching! Thank you.😃
You can do it! Just don’t stop drawing ✍🏼
Your videos are absolutely amazing! So relaxing, simple explanation for a great technique! Thank you very much!
Thank you so much 😊 I’m so glad you are enjoying the videos!
Thank you for sharing this, I’ve watched a few videos on the Loomis head and this one makes the most sense to me. Will be checking out more of your vids!
You are so welcome 🙏🏻 I’m glad that it was helpful.
Your calming, reassuring, energy is terrific for this. Thank you! Liked and Subscribed.
Welcome to the MC fam!
Your way of explaining is really amazing, I learned in one day
I’m so glad you found the video helpful 😊🙏🏻
Thank you for your excellent calm teaching style and sharing your talent
Absolutely my friend, I’m glad you liked it 😊🙌🏻
Just found your channel yesterday as I was looking into a refresher on Loomis heads & their varied angles. Wow! You have done a wonderful job explaining the mechanics of this, especially regarding jaw lines etc. I’ve binged through several of your excellent tutorials already and found the 15 head model provided all the basics. Thank you for creating these videos. I’ve subscribed and will continue watching and drawing along with them in the upcoming days.
Awesome! Thank you! I'm so glad the videos are helpful for you :)
So calming and relaxing, keep it up.
Glad you enjoyed this one. Take care! 😊🙌🏻
This is sooooo good!!! Going thru it very slowly you make it so much easier!!!

Your so welcome Richard. I’m glad you are enjoying the videos. Cheers! 😊🙏🏻
Thank you for being so responsive to questions.
Of course 😊
Found you when I´m trying to improve from the basics. And sorry for comparison but your voice is so calming and full of encouragement that for a second I thoutgh I was listening to Bob Ross. Thanks a lot.
Wow, thank you! I love Bob Ross, I used to watch him paint when I was a kid.
These last two head tutorials were great.... exactly what I was looking for. Now I can "quickly" draw heads for the animations I'm planning to start next year. The key is quickly. I'm not trying to be a detailed super artist. I'm simply planning to animate things and need to be able to draw heads and bodies at various angles quickly. And this is coming from someone who has very little drawing talent.
Hey Henry, I’m very happy that those two videos have helped you. I will see what I can do in regards to making more videos on basic shapes and forms. Hope you are well! Cheers 😊
@@MesserCreations Just re-watched this video. You forgot one angle and I can't seem to find it anywhere. What about the direction where the head is at a 3/4ths of an angle facing away from us? An angle where you can still see part of one eye and the side of the nose while the head is facing away? I'm having a rough time trying to visualize it using the loomis method.
Hey Henry, that is actually a very good point. I’ll see what I can come up with in a future video. Thanks for your feed back on this video.
Thanks for this video. Very useful and easy to understand 😊
You are so welcome, I’m glad it was helpful 😊🙌🏻
Thanks, great tutorial!
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed it 😊🙏🏻
Great instruction!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Me gusta como lo explica. estaba buscando un video asi, no es fácil cuando se está comenzando , pero como tu lo dice, todo esta en la práctica. Me Suscrito para seguir aprendiendo de tus buena asesoría. Gracias

My pleasure! Glad it helped you :)
Thank you so much, it helped a lot
Glad to hear that!
Thank you for teaching us this method i am very grateful to you sir❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome my friend 😊🙏🏻
What a relaxing voice ❤️
This has to be the best and easy and to see for this tutorial
Thank you Ruben, glad it is helping you 😊🙌🏻
Thank you very much for teaching that awesome technique in real time. Very useful 👍
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks, best explanation ever.
You’re welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊🙏🏻
Hey, thanks for the amazing turtial! I just wish you'd make a second part on how to add the facial features on these heads. I drew all the heads with you but now I'm stuck as I don't know where to put the facial features on each head🤦♀️
You are so welcome, and thanks for the idea! I will see what I can do for a video like that. :)
Yeah that would be great if u could!
thank you so much. this helped me a lot ❤
You're welcome 😊
That's what is all about fun!
Absolutely :)
Wow this is one of the best explanations of it I always struggle at upwards n downwards angles been drawing characters for years following rob marzullo, Patrick brown, jazza ,David finch ,ed foychuck and mike van orden as well as others lol but this skips nothing I love it deffo gonna put it into practice deffo subbed
I appreciate you mentioning me in such elite company. I'm just glad you enjoyed the vid and that it is helping you :)
@@MesserCreations no probs yea helped a lot wanna get the angles n facial mapping down before full bodies n poses lol
I always say there’s only one thing harder then drawing faces and that is full body poses. All in good time, good luck man.
@@MesserCreations cheers yea always practice with my cyberpunk character been designing for years lol just bit complex why I couldn't have simple oc lol
The best tutorial basic loomis method
So glad you enjoyed this one Janelle :)
Hey thanks for this. I bought loomis’ book but struggled to make progress and gave up. This video really helped! 😊
That’s great! I’ve had multiple artists tell me that these videos are much easier to learn from than the Loomis book. I’m glad you decided to give it another try. Keep going 😊🙌🏻
Hi there! I am so excited to find you. But I am concerned that this is a year old. are you still doing your awesome tutorials? I pray you are. You have such a sweet, calm, about you and your tone takes the fear out of even trying the Loomis method. I am 78 years young and wondering where YOU have been allllll my life on my small art journey? Please keep making videos. and thank you so much for making these.
Hey Diana, Yes I am! I have a ton of step by step drawing tutorial videos here on my TH-cam channel. I also have exclusive content available on my Skillshare channel. Here is a link to sign up if you are interested skl.sh/3TTQMWs My Skillshare is where I go into depth teaching about how to draw the Loomis head with reference photos. It is much more digestible than TH-cam, and you can upload a project at the end of the class's too. Regardless if you sign up for Skillshare or not I am glad that you found the channel and I hope it helps you on your journey :) Take care!
Yey! Hopefully my son and I can work on this together
We both have "head" issues.
Thank you so much👍👍
Hey Red! You guys are so welcome, I hope it helps and you have fun drawing! Take care!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much ❤
You're welcome 😊
bro i am starting to learn drawing and your video really help me. thank you for this amazing tutorial ❤❤
Welcome 😊
Hi my teacher was not at the drawing class tonight so we just drew the people on our own and I pulled upur vid and drew a Loomis head first!! Another student asked me to send him ur link!!! (which I did, of course!) and GUESS WHAT?! BOTH portraits I did the models asked for the portraits!!! It was so fun!!!! There is sooooo much more to learn and I have to keep watching you but just wanted to thank you again!!! I'll see what my teacher says next Wednesday! 😘
Haha that's so cool! I appreciate the fact that you shared the vid with others. Its even cooler that the models asked for their portraits from you. You are so welcome :) I always start out drawing a Loomis head first. For me its the perfect amount of basic structure to start building the rest of the portrait from. Keep going, never stop drawing.
@@MesserCreations ❤️
great artist!
Thanks :)
WHAT'S UP!!
LOVE THAT INTRO!!
YOUR A VERY HANDSOME MAN, BTW, IMHO.
This is awsome it has definitely made me improve after watching and still use the techniques I hope to have as many subs as you do someday thankyou
Happy to help! Just keep going and eventually you will. Never stop drawing 😊🙌🏻

You are so very welcome my friend 😊🙌🏻
Great tutorial! :)
Glad you liked it 😊🙏🏻
I keep reapeating myself, so I got it.
This picture helped me a lot
Thank you
You're welcome 😊
I wanna take up comic book art as a hobby - been drawing in my youth, but now I want to get into it more. Just came across your videos and I just looooove this tutorial! Thank you so much for this
Go for it! The Loomis method is perfect for comic character drawing. Andrew Loomis was actually a cartoonist so it makes perfect sense that his method would resonate with comic artists.
@@MesserCreationshaha yeah I came across his name a lot, and thinking about getting his books for myself:)) but so far I am having just tons of fun watching your videos, someone here had the comment that you have very Bob Ross vibes and I agree!
Thank you so much , it's very helpfull 😊
You're welcome 😊
I wish I had found your channel sooner -- I was originally in art college before being shuffled into the sciences (gotta follow the scholarships...) and I need to get back to my artistic roots! I wish I had never compromised. I enjoy science, I love my career and I'm happy with where I'm at now, but I feel like I neglected my art for so long to chase something that was only half-tickling my brain.
Thanks for sharing your videos -- I enjoy working through them as guided practice while I try and graduate from stick man to Loomis man.
Also just noticed that we have the same glasses.... e_e
Great minds think alike!😅
Hey Capa, at least you have found it now :) I feel like we are all artists, some of us just express it more than others. You can always get back to your art so long as you choose to. Every artist has their "active years" where they create their best works of art. Maybe this is the start of yours. I'm glad that you are here now, and I hope that my work helps you with yours. Take care my friend!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this one. No extraneous information and babble we don't need. Really straight forward, calm voice, super clear. Thank you. I have an A3 page full of little Loomis heads and I'm going to keep going until I don't have to think about it. One question. If you are trying to draw the circles freehand (ie not measuring with the set of compass) then how do you know what proportion the ovals are going to be? Are we trying to get a square into four equal squares? Many thanks. Oh yes, I'm doing your course over on Skillshare as well. I've been a member there for quite a few years now and love it. 😊
Hey Beverley! That’s it, just draw as many as you possibly can. It’s all about muscle memory and getting completely comfortable with the basic structure of a head. To answer your question, most all ovals are going to be the same size roughly. The top of the oval lines up with the hairline so you can gage where the top of your oval will be based on the reference in question. I would not recommend blocks and rectangles unless that is what makes sense for you. I will be uploading more classes to my Skillshare in the coming weeks where I will be drawing basic features and showing how you can place them on certain heads all with references. Thanks for being a part of the MC fam. Hope that answered your question? Take care 😊🙌🏻
@@MesserCreations Thanks for taking the time to answer my question 👍
Absolutely 😊
You can tell this guy cares about his audience simply by how he's replied to nearly every single comment. Seriously tho great video
I try to respond to everyone, sometimes it can get overwhelming lol I appreciate you, thanks :)
I need to do heads, and heads, and heads. I am a watercolorist and want to do all of my children and grand children, and great grand children, before I die. I will be 72 this year, never giving up. Your video was great... did 100 in 3 days, still going, and going, and
I hope the video has been helping you :) I draw heads all the time. I swear you can never draw enough. I know I’m always practicing.
amazing tutorial !!! Thanks. please make a tutorial on how to draw facial features on these Loomis heads
You are welcome 🙏🏻 I will most definitely make one on how to place the facial features on Loomis heads.
Es genial ese metodo👀💪👽
I’m so glad you like it 😊🙌🏻
Just so you know Sir, I'm a student of yours. Keep them coming, we are watching.
Thank you 😊 I will keep them coming. I appreciate you guys.
I am gratified that not only do you, a professional artist, also use a compass to draw a circle, but you're using the same Helix compass I use :) Any suggestions on how to do the side plane on the straight on and 3/4 views? Particularly the straight on, I can never get them the same size and one side forever looks wonky.
It’s a really nice compass :) hmm as far as getting those lines straight I struggled with that as well. You could try to use a ruler stick or you can try and just draw a lot of them in your sketchbook and build up your muscle memory. Either way will be beneficial. Hope that helps? Take care! 😊🙌🏻
Thanks ❤️
You are so welcome 🙏🏻
i love your videos 🙂
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoy them 😊🙌🏻
Practiced along with u but had to slow your speed down...lol x thank u x best wishes from UK Alli XXX
I’m so glad the video was helpful. Take care Alli 😊🙌🏻
Wow
hi this video is amazing, thanks for doing it.
I have a question if you don't mind.
I'm a bit perplexed by your front views in line 2 and 3.. Shouldn't the features align ? seems to me that on those view you compressed the length of the face.. Is it me missing something out ? I mean .. why for example the chin in front view is not at all at the same vertical place as it is in profile views ?
If you can find the time to explain, it would help a lot .
In any case so happy i found this channel, instant subscribe :)
Good..
Nice bro

Would/could you make a video showing the Reilly method too?
You’re a really good teacher btw.🙃
Maybe one day! I still have a handful of videos I will be coming out with regarding the Loomis method, but then I will come out with an equally comprehensive series on the Reilly method. It will just take some time to produce. Cheers my friend, I am very glad you are enjoying the videos so far :)

Tell me how you determine where to draw the inner circle for the ear, inside the first circle? Do you look where the ear is in the reference photo and go from there? I’m really confused because nothing tells you in the Loomis book.
The top of the oval is the hairline, the bottom of the oval is the bottom of the nose line. As the head turns away from you the oval gets thicker. As the subject looks directly at you the oval gets smaller. The ear sits in the bottom back quadrant of the oval. If you follow those three principles you should nail it. Let me know if it doesn’t work and I’ll try and help you.
@@MesserCreations thanks. I’m confused about exactly where to put the oval. If you have a photo reference, do you locate the ear first and then locate the oval according to that?
