I read that the United States built 3,985 of the magnificent aircraft. There are less than ten still in existence, and only TWO are still air-worthy. An armada of these flying over Japanese cities had laid utter waste to the country before the atom bomb was ever perfected. Each plane required about 3.5 man-years to construct, but accounted for the destruction of 50 man-years of infrastructure, and countless lives. From a bean-counter's perspective it was by far the most "profitable" weapons system deployed in WWII, in simple return-on-investment terms.
