    I spent many years working on the C5, what an awesome display of power!

    I was stationed in Guam with the Typhoon Chasers back in 1982. Back then, C-141s and C-5s were prevalent. A C-5 came in one day and had a radar problem. I stupidly volunteered to help the tech take the essentials and his tool bag to the flightdeck. Little did I realize how freakin' far up in the clouds the flight deck was situated. My thighs were screaming by the time we hauled everything up there. This is a huge airplane. I flew to the Philippines several times in one, and the passenger compartment faces aft. It was very humid in Guam in the summertime, so when the a/c was trying to overcome the arid temperatures, it looked as though fog was being purposely pumped into the cabin. I know the Antonov is bigger, but this behemoth will certainly do. The cargo bay is relatively cavernous as well...

    There is a reason why the C5 was designed as a shoulder pad:
    -The cargo space is not affected by the continuous wing holster, as it runs above the cabin;
    -The engines can be suspended under the wings and still have sufficient ground clearance. This prevents too much swirled dust from being sucked in when using semi-paved slopes.
    This ground clearance is also important for another feature of the Galaxy: To facilitate loading and unloading, the entire aircraft can be lowered via the landing gear hydraulics.

    I'll never forget the first time I set eyes on a C-5A. I had just arrived in Charleston, SC, in 1974 and as I stepped out of my car, a C-5A was passing low overhead, landing gear down. There were trees around my location and it seemed the aircraft filled the visible sky. Okay, my 50 year old memory may have exaggerated that last bit, but not by much. It was overwhelming both visually and audibly.
    I live near TAFB, and to my knowledge they've never had a C-5A there. Probably the largest aircraft they'e had on the ground was Air Force One.

    Quite a few hops in the old C5As! Those times are long gone and like the "Vulcan" howl, I miss the C5As screaming GE TF39 engines, even though I'm aware of the increased efficiency of the CF6s

    "Skilled US Pilot Pushes C-5 Engines to Extreme Limits During Insane Takeoff"
    Translation: US pilot makes a normal everyday takeoff using a non-extreme thrust setting in a C-5.

    • @ralphkellenberger9540
      @ralphkellenberger9540 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      correct, ECC (fadac) controlled engines cannot be "pushed to extreme" limits, MTO is the max and the CF-6 engine on the C5 is derated from the engine's true max rated power

    I used to work at the end of the West runway at Norton AFB back in the late 80's and early 90's. You would hear the sound of those engines and go out to watch them take off. At the East end they would turn around by the golf course, and see the players crouch down. When it took off, you could read the writing under the wheel wells. It was always amazing watching so big fly.

    The C5 was a design proposed by Lockheed in response to the Air Force request for proposal (RFP). Boeing proposed the 747 and Douglas offered the DC10. Boeing won based on technical offerings. Douglas won based on cost (being cheapest). Lockheed won based on the need to have "Continued production capability" since their production line would shut down and capacity would be lost. The concept of Continued capability was also seen when the DC-10 production ended so the Air Force purchased the KC-10 until the C-17 could be purchased.

    What gives the C5 Galaxy its unique whistling Skilsaw sound? Many use the same engines found on many 747s, 767s, MD11s - GE's CF6-80 - and a couple of Airbus models. None of them sound like that. Older C5's use the TF39, a known screamer but what makes them screech?

    Sucked a pigeon into an engine on landing at Torrejon, España in 1982. Stiiiiiiiiiinky. Had to stay on the aircraft as the pilot ran the engines up to see if they could clear the "debris" from the pigeon. NOT a pleasant experience. P.U.

    Air National Guardsmen (& Air Reserve), some of the best Crew Chiefs living. Unlike Active Duty, Air Crews & Crew Chiefs can stay w/a particular aircraft for years, learning & knowing the particular in’s & out’s; instead of being rotated out after only 2-3 years.

    • @georgefaulk2528
      @georgefaulk2528 หลายเดือนก่อน

      BS, I'm 21 years Air Force retired. We learn ten times more than the Guard because we are exposed to a lot more problems of different aircraft. Put them on a different aircraft and they'd piss their pants because they don't know what to do. Plus the Guard would come into our base for 2 weeks every year, mostly just to party. Majority of the tasks and projects they were given to do was only halfway finished or half ass done. We always had to finish the projects and fix all the mistakes they made. Give them a job that should only take a week to do, and they would never finish it. It never failed, every year. Like they say it's a weekend job for them, not their real job.
