- As seen on Travel Channel. Sequoia is such a well-kept secret, that they call it "The Hidden Park." When you come, you might not believe how tall these are. There's a drive-thru tree that you can drive through just because you can. And while you're at the national park, check out the 1500 plant species. Also check out the secret cave system, right below its trees - Crystal Cave.

Forget the park the forest is a million times better
This is one of the reasons why I love California. Its a beautiful state with so much to offer, I miss it so much

Informative Redwood video
Had a brief visit there about 40 years ago; overnight at the park lodge. One thing that sticks in my memory is the incredibly sweet odor in the neighborhood of the sequoias--I assume from their bark or wood. (Or perhaps from some other trees or bushes surrounding them??) You can see all the wonderful photos and videos, but nothing in the guidebooks prepares one for the scents--I also rate highly the piny (?) scent as I walked the rim trail on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and the wonderful sun-warmed pine scent on Calif. route 44 between Redding and the entrance to Lassen Volcanic NP. No air freshener can match it! Also (back to Sequoia), the hummingbirds at the feeders outside the dining room at breakfast time ... Highly recommend this park; wish we'd had time to get to Kings Canyon.
What some of you may not know, is that Sequoia National Park is neighbored to the north by Kings Canyon National Park. They're practically joined at the hip. You enter these two parks from Highway 198 in California, either the south entrance from Visalia, California where you reach Sequoia first. Or from the north entrance from Fresno where you reach Kings Canyon first. About halfway through this beautiful country up there along 198, you reach the other park, no matter which direction you come from. If you plan on going up there for a camping trip, Lodgepole and Dorst Creek campgrounds are the most popular up there. The area is significantly populated by Black Bears, so make sure your gear is secured when you're up there. The bears are more of a nuisance then a danger, for they love to go after people food. There are lockers up there at each camp site to secure your food gear. There is plenty of hiking and other activities up there. Its breathtakingly beautiful. I highly recommend it to any new visitors.
The forest is better
I am going there this summer FGW and, from there, we're going to explore the Pikes Peak in Colorado: its worth a trip!
Awesome video! Correction on one thing. General Sherman is not the largest living thing on Earth. The Aspen in park City is. They share a common root system and are clones of themselves so the forest is basically one living organism.

A stalactite holds on "tite" to the ceiling. A stalagmite "mite" get up there someday. LOL
A good one! I learned stalaCtite hangs from the Ceiling, while a stalaGmite grows up from the Ground.

The giant trees in Sequoia are amazing! Whitney is "only 14,505", not 15,000, it's the highest in the Lower 48 but not all of the U.S.; enjoyed the black bear and three tarantulas we found on our way back down to Visalia.
It's not so much of a secret anymore. The park has become so popular lately that it's always booming with travelers!

Best state because of the geological diversity. Hawaii and Alaska are second and third. Colorado 4th Wyoming 5th Utah 6th Arizona 7th Nevada 8th and then there are the rest.

Sure can depend on point of view, but OR & WA are pretty good. None of the ones Devin Dash listed has anything like the Columbia River Gorge, Crater Lake, etc.. So it's hard to really rate states.
In terms of geological diversity you're right. Not sure it makes it the 'best." But as a Californian I sure dig it. There's no where else you can go from big desert to 11K+ to the ocean in one day.

General Sherman is the actual size of a single limb of the big boy trees that long ago dotted the globe for a small example let's look at devil's tower in Wyoming. It stood about 53 miles tall

Actually, giant sequoias might not be here long after us as they're endangered.
Kings Canyon and Seqouia are joint parks and going there is better than yosemite. The landscape is greener and filled with seqouias compared to yosemite which is in the sierra national forest which is rockier and not as accesible backcountry as Seqouia

Yes, there are bears there but not grizzly bears. The park guides can advise you about safety around bears.
Plus the only real dangerous bears are cocky beefy males and mothers with cubs

I wouldn’t say it was unknown but very well known, WTH. They cut down readwoods for years till they limited the timber industry. They made water towers made of redwood for hundred years and they made siding and shingles too. Where do you get your info???
Eric Van Eck these are sequoia! Not redwood. Redwoods are sequoia’s taller and thinner relative. Redwoods only live in the north coast of California

Mt. McKinley (Denali) in Alaska is the tallest mountain in the U.S. - not Mt. Whitney.

I always consider Alaska as part of the "continental US", considering it's on the same continent. I think perhaps "contiguous US" is the correct term... but who knows, maybe it's used interchangeably? :)
I always heard "continental" but maybe that term is antiquated now? But Wikipedia says contiguous, so I'll go with that from now on. Thank you for this little bit of enlightenment :-)
PrimeNavigator The contiguous (continuous) states are those that are "connected". IE: "the lower 48". Alaska is part of the continental US. The term is not antiquated but has a different meaning and they are not interchangable.

Mt. Whitney is not 15,000 feet. It is 14,500 and a nickle.
What Moran, would want to destroy, such magnificent beautiful, trees,..? This is why I am an advocate for the use of plastic, instead of paper. Stop using paper packaging, and use plastic, It would also, create new jobs, all across the board,...! I would rather re-use plastic, for every thing, then kill such a beautiful creation,..? I pray that my idea will come to light, one day,..! 1-23-2019 Evona A Grochowski.
I wish it could be that way but most plastic is not re used cause our government doesn’t wanna pay for the costs of doing all that and just toss more and more into landfills. I feel that neither paper or plastic should be used but a biodegradable in between that falls apart quickly after use so nothing gets chocked or eats it.
Too bad that one tree you can drive through fell down from the storm and broke apart.
That was a different redwood at another park close by. I just got back from sequioa /kings canyon np yesterday and drove through the sequoia there. It's ny moro rock.
