The Rajiv Menon episodes are outstanding. I find him to be the best person to shed light on AR Rahman's creative process at least in the early days. He is so articulate, detailed and analytical in his explanations, that it is a treat to watch him take us through the journey of how ARR's music came into being. Helps that he is a film maker and musician as well.

Rajiv is so suave and sophisticated. The way he crystal clearly articulated his thoughts about uniqueness of Rahman is absolutely marvellous. These 3 episodes are indeed one the bests in the entire series.
Yep, I too love the suaveness in him while also having that sophisticated touch like a classy musician as he had it in his genes probably hailing from a musical family. No wonder unanimously all those who stayed with the series are claiming his episodes to be the very best of this entire series!

I don't know if it matters to anyone but the music tracks of Bombay made me go through the darkest days and still see light in the end. On a side note, I bought the cassette first and played it on my friend's music system, before I had my own. Thank you for touching our lives with such great music.

This is the level of detail we want to hear in interviews. Kudos to the interviewer for asking the right questions and keeping the conversation in the right direction. You brought out stories that hard to come by, and delved deep into the minds of some of the greatest creative people this country has produced. Bollywood didn't encouraged K.S.Chitra amma and ignored her like anything , though she brought national award for hindi in 1997 ,even she sang tuhire in hindi ,but hindi producer removed it ... I have lot much regret on hindi film industry on this part..
Chitraji is already well occupied with Tamil,Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada music industry. 🙏
Really, why people are so overly prejudiced on the grounds of language or other barriers. We South indians have been very kind to almost every North singer even when their diction in our languages was super horrible and many of them didn’t even had one fourth of brilliance that Chitra mam has. Instead we saw the unity in diversity and appreciated the variety of all the North India’s singers and producers I heard have paid extra amounts on top of it to rope in each of them.
How intolerant that these Bollywood folks are is evident on many occasions and how their composers used to shamelessly copy our Ilayaraja’s scores and didn’t even credit them properly. It’s only because of Rahman many such useless trends and royalties have changed at large and for good. But nevertheless, it’s more of their loss than Chitra’s as she’s anyways super busy down south.

Still remember when Minsara Kanavu released during good old Madras days and in school we use call it as electric dream among friends and discuss about Rehman music, dance, arvaind swamy and kajol song etc , and was fun though, very nostalgic feeling.
I remember listening to 'kehna hi kya' for hours and absolutely being fascinated by it,having not even basic understanding of music..I would fiercely argue this being the best AR Rahman song,now I know why,the way Rajiv explains 6:35-7:30...perfect,it all makes sense now.

In the last comment and in some parts of his conversation he has touched surfacialy on the attitude of Ilayaraja. He who is rigid, composes and never adapts, considers superior to everyone. In contrary Rahman was a modest master.
Even I was reminded of him when he said that! Ilayaraja showed his arrogance even after Rahman winning oscar on the very stage where the music directors of the South were all felicitating him!

If something like that happens, I'd love if all music composers(who are all fan of ARR) should get together and perform the music.
Rajiv Menon is definitely a man with tremendous knowledge about films and music .
When Rajiv says ARR modesty is the key and others have arrogance , it took me back immediately to the times when K Balachander , Mani Ratnam , Bharathiraja were ready to depart from working with ilaiyaraaja and move working with ARR
Let’s not forget 3 great filmmaker’s who have tasted varied success with Ilaiyaraaja decide to not work with him around same time is not happening without a reason

Even Balumahendra left ilayaraja and did one movie. Later for the next movie producer Dhanu brought him back to ilayaraja. K. S. Ravikumar, Vasanth, Kovaai Chezhiyan, Ramarajan, left ilayaraja for a few films.
These set of directors has their loyalty to SA Rajkumar , Deva , Sirpi, Vidyasgar, Margathamani , Hamsalekha amongst others @@sridharkarthik64
It’s true. Bombay has one of the finest musical composition in the history of Indian cinema.
This video was another eye opener. Not only about ARR sir creative process for music production bur also Rajiv Menon sir's diligence for cinematography. Mani sir's and ARRs sir relationship of how the trust in the relation plays a part as well. But the highlight is the part what Rajiv Sir describes as the "artistic humility" of ARR sir. This has now come out in many interviews on your channel and other interviews as well such as the one where Arjit Singh sir interviewed ARR sir.
The best is always saved for last by 02 India, these episodes with Menon are sublime.

'Bombay theme' makes me cry every time
Yes, and what Rajeev said about the composition that it was actually a lullaby had made me relook at the theme score.. He very well said what's the base emotion here but the magic of ARR is that you could actually feel it like the pain of the bereaved ppl during the infamous Mumbai riots. That's why he's so special as to how he can marry two contrasting ideas into one and churn it into an epic score!

Even I know that he’s a cinematographer and had extracted some amazing scores from Rahman. But what is almost unknown to me is how close is this man to Rahman and their association since his struggling days when he’s juggling music with jingles. Really, certain gems come out very late and so is this interview that came with least expectations but remained the best ever in this series and i’m very sure that the future interviews of any other technicians too might not beat this given this man’s sheer knowledge and articulation.

I think Rajiv has forgotten the backlash that Bombay movie faced during release especially some scenes related to this song. 🙂 that's the beauty of time, it makes people forget.

Releasing a movie like Bombay in South India especially in Tamil Nadu and Kerala will be not harmful to the theater, but in fact it would run to packed houses if only it is as good as Bombay. The rest of the country is definitely like Mr. Menon described.

What a voice Mr Rajiv Menon.. amazing
Again so many fascinating insights in one interview. Ofcrs, the moment of the day could be even that comparison he made initially as well where there are multiple musical influences in his music which is not so in any other music director and Rahman is a maverick at that and ofcrs, we can’t help but second that what he said. And it’s no surprise to me at least when he mentioned he had no ego or arrogance that other successful music directors had. But then that humility had also added an extra edge to his already scintillating music is what the takeaway factor here or the icing on the cake that qualifies it to make it a moment of the day.
Though said jokingly, Mani Ratnam decided to fire him and that’s when the greatest film Bgm ever of Bombay was born that had Mr. Ratnam in tears could also be the moment of the day as that fact itself surprised me more than the actual moment of the day since it’s something I know as his ardent fan.
Also, Rajeev is chosen first to sing for Roja apart from acting is also quite another surprise for me. Though i’m very convinced by his logic as to why Bombay could in a way be one of his best albums including the world-famous bgm, but for me Roja always stands first close to my heart and then only any other album. Also, had Rajeev filmed Roja he could have let in some great insights into its Bgm scores as well which I feel is one of the best in any Indian film bgms so far. Apart from the songs and the visuals, it is this sheer novelty, freshness and brilliance in bgm scores that multiplied the impact of every visual in Roja thousand fold. But unfortunately, Rajeev too had not opened his mouth on the amazing bgm scores of Roja. Even now one can get goosebumps after listening to certain bgms he made throughout the film. Even Rakeysh Mehra mentioned about his bgm score for RDB for a particular scene but dunno why Roja’s bgm is not talked about by anyone ever so far.
Eagerly awaiting the next episode for his insights on Guru and probably his other films too. 🙏 Thanks O2 india for ardently continuing his series and giving each episode no less than 15 mins to cover the length, breadth and depth of his fascinating insights into the music making art of our Mozart!
