Thanks for the tips, now I understand why starting from bottom, the trips will dry slower on the painted surface that gives you time to fix them.

Exactly. It’s a tip most painters don’t even apply. Because if you’re applying the stain correctly, you’ll have drips. But you want to minimize the effects of the drips.

So, I'm going to paint / stain to a natural green color on old cedar shingles. Can I use an airless sprayer? And thank you for this video. always great information.

Thanks for your question. Yes you can use an airless sprayer. However, it’s best to back brush the stain into the shingles in order to get proper adhesion and coverage. You will need to spray the stain in many different angles but it’s the back brushing that will work the product into the wood grains. Especially for the first coat. If you do a thorough job on the 1st coat, you might be able to get away with only spraying (and not back brushing) the 2nd coat. But still, watch for drips.

Hello! If my shingle are already stained (similar to what you are using) is there a way to change it/restain?

If your cedar shingles are currently stained with a semi transparent stain (like in the video) you really can’t change it. The semi transparent stain has soaked into the wood and therefore adding a new color stain will not create the same effect. You would need to use a chemical stain remover and wash the shingles to remove the current coating. (This is a lot of work if your cedar shingles are newly stained. If your shingles are older and faded, it’s a lot easier to remove the stain). However, if your shingles are currently stained a light stain color, and you want to stain them a darker colour - it will work (but I’d highly recommend doing a test in an inconspicuous area or a tester shingle first.
You could also apply a solid stain to get any solid color but it’s not the same as a semitransparent stain. If you need any further help you can call our hotline at 1-866-724-6818 or send us an email at support@trustedhousepainter.com
