I have been a painter for over 30 years now. My experience is from 4 generations of painters. It is so nice to see someone making a video with real brushing tips and old school skills that can truly be helpful to the d.i.y.er. Good job bud.
You are just rude. Didn't your mother ever teach you any manners? I bet your work is about like your language, filthy and unprofessional. You should be ashamed of yourself.
dellfozzio pintura I am the best brush man in the Midwest and I do not paint like this at all. you can tell a real painter if he shows up and some painters whites with paint on them. I've painted with multiple companies commercial industrial mansions New res Renovations, I've done it all. Do not follow tips on any of these people, just hire a real painter!!
312eastwest I agree, a lot of times you don't have to back for all the exteriors but plastic off the windows and back off lights and go to town with a sprayer and some Shields!! these people don't know what the hell they're doing on TH-cam!!
Mike Beck sry guys , spraying is awesome if it's an option. I was only commenting on this guy's brushing techs. You can tell he has some skills and not just some wannabe like alot of videos I see, but yeah, mask and spray if possible. Just make sure it's prepped properly people.
My uncle lived at the shore where house needed repainting every 5 years or so. Use to prepare and paint one side of house each year -- one weekend to prepare (scape, repair or replace wood etc...) and second weekend for painting. House always looked great and task per year manageable. Use a roller paint stick/power roller to cut time in half from video suggestions
Thank you so much!! We used your technique and myself and wife was able to paint our two bedroom cottage in two days (outside painting and trimming and deck on both sides. Our landlord couldn’t believe how fast we got it done!! Mahalo!!!
I have been a painter for 7 years (read: 30yrs) and I agree, these tips are great! I would add an extension stick for lighter handling, especially when rolling the paint.
Flawless technique here. I'm a pretty lousy painter myself, with about two years experience but I've popped onto this video more than once to steal little tips and tricks. Really good painters all seem to handle the brush differently than your average painter. It looks as though the brush is the softest, most plush thing around and like it's practically painting itself. You're making it look easier than it is, for sure.
I agree with your observation on how the brush looks. I've finally gotten very proficient with one myself, and the key is what this guy keeps repeating, which is to keep plenty of paint on your brush. If it's getting streaky and requiring you to brush it back and forth or use a lot of pressure, the brush is too dry. Most people put too thin a coat on, as well.
Thanks a million for your tips. This is awesome. Your tips turned a week long chore into a two day task. Laying it on with a roller and then working it in with a brush is a revelation. I did 8 inch lap siding 3 boards at a time and came to dread the the parts where I had to dip to cut in! By the time that I finished I found my self rolling on the paint on extra heavy around the obstacles and then "catching it" with a brush before it could drip. I also found that I could lay on heavy enough that I only had to do one coat on the entire house. Again AMAZING tips, you changed my life !
LOL, "Changed my life!" That's a new accolade for me. :) Thanks You've obviously got a knack for painting by the way you describe your actions. Although, being your project is exterior, I would probably go the extra mile and apply the second coat. Always better to do 2 coats on exteriors (even in 1 coat covers) And get this, the second coat goes on even faster. All the best mate
I spray painted my cape-style wooden-shake house approx 15 years ago. Watched some videos and bought an inexpensive sprayer with a small tank. Yes, I spent a bunch of time refilling the tank. I did a great job controlling overspray with a sheet of cardboard blocking as I was spraying. I was a brazen 40-something woman. It was a learning experience. Fast forward to my late 50’s, I’m in the process of prepping to repaint before winter sets in. This time I’m going to roll/brush. I’m not sure if it’ll take more or less time. I suspect that it’ll take less paint. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Im hoping the small edge from each row is covered with paint from the edge of the roller and doesn’t require picky touch up. I am a competent DIYer of lots of big projects. Thanks for the little roller-loading tip!
At the end of the day, as long as it gets done. :) We sprayed probably 98 percent of the houses we painted for clients, but made this for those not wanting to use a sprayer. It really speeds up the process, but not near as quick as spraying. Happy painting :)
I’ve read conflicting text about the staying power of sprayed vs brushed on paint. It appeared from my house that the peaks that were rolled on held up better than more of the rest of the house that I sprayed. Surely the prep plays a part as well as the direction (N/S/E/W) it’s facing. I guess an airless painter also differs from the less expensive sprayers. Dunno? Just wish I had timed myself and tracked the number of paint gallons used the last time I painted the house. Thanks again for the video and the reply.
Good video tips for diy. I used to work with my dad some, a painter for 50+ years commercial and housing. He said never paint out of the paint can. Pour what you need into a paint pot and dip out of that. He dips the brush, taps the side, spins it with his fingers and taps the other side of the brush on the same side of the pot almost faster than you can see it happen. When you need to put it down to get rolling the brush stands up in the pot on the clean side and is not left out in the air. Never roll out of a paint tray. They are too prone to being kicked over or stepped in. Use a 5gal bucket and a screen.
Mr. Invincible painter, You're killing us as painters giving away our techniques lol. I love watching other painters with their style of our craft. Idk my father taught me to paint 20 +years ago and it was like deja vu watching this.... The only thing you left out was always brush back from dry to wet ESPECIALLY with paints or stains that have a gloss.... I'm newer school.... Was taught on a brush but I'm pretty crafty with a sprayer lol we "all like to save money" as you put it lol... In glad you show homeowners "weekend warriors" what's entailed in painting. I believe they'll realize theirs a lot more than what the eye sees, and they'll learn that once they dip into the first gallon... Once again thanks for the video. Myers Painting Too
Great video mate thank you. I am in the process of buying a house which needs a lot of work and this will be one of my reference videos for DIY work. Much appreciated.
@@bettye444 It took a fair amount of time to scrape the old paint off the wood trim. Painting went faster for myself. I did this all before the first snow. I work on the sun side wall if temp gets to say 60. Maybe done till spring.
I have seen new homes and they were sprayed. Looked really bad. Builder refused to repaint. The start and stop marks really stood out. That was my biggest fear before i began to paint my home. I figured these guys are professionals. All they do is paint houses and this is what they are producing. So that stopped me from spraying even though i had already bought a sprayer. Watched countless videos, but you had the most real life value and content. I have finally finished painting my home and it turned out being a professional job. So I returned to say, thank you. You were God sent and at the right time. I will say to anyone looking to paint your home, you can do it. HOWEVER, he makes it look easy and it's not. Its' A LOT of hard work. I mean....a lot. Tip: maybe you should set up a donation page or something. I'm sure people would donate because of the money they saved.
I watched your video again and I am currently at 3/4 of the house is finished. When I painted with my mother she insisted on the paint brush because she did not want stipple left on the flat siding. Well I have to be honest, that stipple on the siding cannot be seen unless you get really close, like with readers, and I don't mind it at all! I still have to use a brush to go into the grooves but I have to say the roller is my new best friend when painting! My neighbor is a professional painter and he told me that they use a roller pretty much all the time anymore. Depending on how much you load the roller, it also seems like I am applying a thicker coat to the siding, where the brush is much less! I want a thicker coat since it is on the exterior and I always do two coats of paint, so I am happy! Thank you for your video!
I worked with an old painter and he always had the biggest brush loaded to the max with paint. When you work by the hour attention to detail is critical.. when you work by the job redbull gives you wings.
💥 Thanks for your time sharing this. It looks pretty simple rolling and brushing standing on the ground but show this on a ladder hitting the second story.
Excellent video. Flawless techniques. Thanks for the video. I enjoy exterior brush & roller painting, and really enjoy doing the stuff most people hate: louver shutters, multi-panel doors, lap siding. With the right techniques, even the most reluctant and uninitiated of DIYers can enjoy it too!
+doobysnacks LOL, you're right though mate, a little help with knowledge (tips and tricks) any DIYer will improve their skill set almost instantaneously.
Just want to say, I think your tips are great, your presentation is comfortable, your knowledge is helpful to me, and I appreciate the time you have taken out of your personal time to do this for us diy'ers at no expense to us. I am shocked that anyone would have a negative comment and you should just ignore them because, although I am not a total nubie, I still learn from you tips and as someone from the audience you are aiming for, you are doing a valuable job that I appreciate. Anyone who says different is just wrong. I know because I am one of those "normal" people. OK, I'm not really all that normal. Just forget that part.
Thanks Belle Michelle, I appreciate the nice comments. And yea, there seems to always be some degenerate around wanting to tear you down. I don't know why, just some issues they have within their selves I guess. No matter, I've been around long enough and these days I simply block them from commenting, no arguments, no wasting time, just gone. :) Again, thanks for recognizing the work that goes into my videos. All the best
I prefer full brush work! Become one with the brush and paint. I'm currently on 'God Mode: Level 2 - Master With Dual Brushes' I have a buddy stand on the roof dropping tubs of paint down.. while I go full Bruce Lee on the weatherboards utilizing my master brush skills!
I use to own a painting machine that fed paint to a roller and I used it inside my house and I believe it worked well, the things I didn't like was the clean up and the amount of paint wasted when cleaning out the machine. I was just wondering however, if that machine might help you and speed up the painting even more by not having to even dip the roller. Now I am wondering how fast a job could get done and done well by two people, one rolling and the other tipping (I think that is the term you used) with the brush. Just something else to ponder! My mother and I last painted her house 18 years ago after my father died. We painted every inch with a 1 1/2 inch brush and put on two 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint and it took 3 months. This year, I do it alone but I am using a roller and brush, I began today! Pray for me cause I need it!
Firstly: That is brilliant. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Secondly: I reckon I can speed you up. Don't cut in first. Lay that paint on and then cut in using it. What do you reckon? Also, wet edge: You could roll that roller vertically. You'd get a ton of paint on and more in the groove, can lay off really fast back to where you came from. I'm doing windows this year and cladding next: this makes a huge difference.
10 points for thinking Bridget, but sorry, no go. The reason I cut in first is so I can start to lay off as soon as I'm finished with the roller. If the paint starts to set (and it will on a warm sunny day) before you can start laying off (because now you are cutting in) your in for a whole set of trouble. If you have plenty of drying time, it would work. My day was very warm and windy. All the best
I independently developed this technique while painting my home. Great video and information to share - wish it was around fifteen years ago when I started LOL! You pointed out doing small sections because of windy conditions and never in direct sun, maintaining a wet edge - all important points. The reason beginners should understand is the speed of drying is increased in these situations and your paint will drag on the brush and lap marks will leave a blocky pattern. Thanks for sharing you expertise!
This is an old thread, but on the off chance that you check it, I’m a first time home painter of a 20x48 ft home. It’s cement board siding that runs vertical, so I was goin to roll and then back brush it. Tips? warnings? I’m kind of working bassackwards here because I’ve already painted the shutters, doors and decking. I only know what I’ve learned on utube...
All good mate. Sounds like you're on the right track. Only thing I would recommend, make your first coat of paint for the raw cement siding on the thin side. Better absorption.
SGspecial84 Yea mate, I’ll pay that one. And it’s the biggest reason so many do a crap job of it or give it a complete miss. Seen it a thousand times over. 👍 thanks for commenting 😀
I have been a 'DIYer' for years and swear that I will never paint again at the end of every project. So here I am about to paint the exterior of the house. Thanks for the tips , I will be trying them tomorrow
Subscribing! I will be painting my own house SOON! I simply cannot afford to have a pro do it...After watching these videos I feel pretty confident. I have already painted my interior and it looks great, but the outside poses different challenges. Some say here that spraying is a better method, but in the hands of a DIY'er like me, most simply don't possess those skills! The thought of all that masking makes me cringe...Besides, I plan to take my time and enjoy the process. I love my house and will take great pride in painting it! Thanks for the great instruction.
Hi Michelle, as a diy, you to have that luxury of taking your time. And when it comes to spraying, you're spot on, diy's don't have the skills for spraying and do more harm than good.. Paint literally gets everywhere. I've seen a lot of damage done, and by so called professional painters. It's not for everyone. Good luck with your paint project and happy painting. :)
Seems insane for a person to spray (and backroll) when they can do it like this. So much simpler, so much less cleanup--particularly if you wrap the roller cover.
Would work well too if you rolled ,say,5 boards (vertically) or up and down as opposed to sideways.By doing so you would also fill the gaps between boards with paint making it that much easier to brush it all out.
Number one, I could see it being harder for the diy, also, by filling in the 'gaps' you would have to be constantly checking back to brush out runs. Even being careful to NOT fill in the gaps, you still get the occasional run.
Learnt a lot from a true professional thank you for making this don't know why when people take the time to share there experience some guys don't respect it thanks again from Ireland
Thanks a heap mate. And yea, I don't get why some people have to complain, their issues I reckon. As for the Irish, I married one! :) Happy painting Kenneth.
I rehab mobile homes. I like to paint on days where the air is not real dry. that way the paint doesn't dry too fast. My mom nails a few holes along the top of the can where the lid seats so paint can drip through and not well up and stick in there. My lumbar 5 is effed up but painting actually seems to be a good back exercise.
Simple extended pole cuts down on your ladder work, roll a heavy coat of paint , then back brush and cut in at the same time , can do a lot from the ground with 1 roller pole 1 brush holder pole.
Not bad. I have been painting since... 1987 omg.....I would have done a couple of minor things different but regardless, this video is professional and to the point. Many on youtube aren't. The key here is less dipping. The point is, use lot's of paint, It's that simple. We don't get paid for dipping, we get paid for applying.
+Frank Atwood It's what got me into making videos. I watched some how to's on painting years ago and said to myself,"I can do better than that". Also the information was sooooooo bad. Not just bad but completely wrong information. The hardest part for me was making the actual video! Happy the professional part comes through. :) Thanks Frank
This is exactly why I watch youtube. Just brilliant stuff, thanks so much. One idea that came to mind is how much faster again this might be if I used one of those pre-loaded rollers where the handle can be filled with paint? May even be able to wrap with cling film between sessions to minimise cleaning. Thanks again for sharing.
Yea, so much on YOuTube it's not funny. :) Happy you found it useful. And a quick mention on your idea of using the pre-loaded roller? Give it a miss, just a diy gimmick.
I love his technic for rolling with enough paint to do the siding lower edges with the back brush. I will incorporate that in my huge project as soon as it is warm enough. I have used the paint stick with the paint in the handle. It's basically a huge syringe. I have only used it for interior so far. He calls it a diy gimmick like that is a bad thing. I am a very good diy guy. This is a device that has made interior painting fun for me. I hate loading the roller though I have used deep pro quality pans. The bucket with roller grid looks better. Back to the project. I intend to use a power roller (with a pump line from the bucket), a roller as mentioned here, or a sprayer to get the paint on the wall quickly and evenly. Then back brush as he shows to work the paint into all corners and crevices. 2 points that are the only real problem I have found with these type for interior is the expensive flow thru roller covers and that they are really hard to clean. If you can afford to use them for one long day then replace rather than clean them you will be happier. The trick of loading the roller than wrapping it in plastic wrap when you take more than a very quick bio-break it a great way to go. If you do the big syringe type spend the money for the ratcheting squeeze handle. You have much better control than the push plunger type. Any input for choice of powered roller verses ratcheting syringe type verses a sprayer for paint loading the wall would be appreciated.
Thanks enjoyed watching and useful tipping I painted my house asbestos shingled make twenty years ago is looking shabby now indeed did not have your tips about loading roller! THANKS great video!!
Lol dude. No. I'm laughing over here. Have you really tried that on an exterior? What a god damn disaster. No wonder this guy switched to making lasagnas; it's hopeless.
@@mackhomie6 in another comment on this video, 2 years ago, you wrote something like "I still hear this guy say I put to much paint on in that subtle voice". I seen this comment we are replying to now of yours at 10 months, so You came back to watch and I wanted to see if you still hear him. Please be smart, I hope we understand each other.
@@mcarpenter1948 I understand now that you reminded me of the comment. lol, "in a sense, it's almost _too much_ paint.". yep. everytime I overdo it and try to put too much on the brush or roll it on way too thick, I find myself muttering under my breath "...almost too much" aha, funny you'd ask.
Pure bristle/china bristle are designed for oil base materials, not water base. They are getting more and more rare these days too, with brush companies designing filament brushes for oil base now. I've never had any issue with filaments not holding enough paint.
I'm painting the exterior of my house within the next couple weeks and definitely learned a bunch watching this video and appreciate the tips! Thanks!! 👍🏼👍🏼🏡
If you learned from this video then you probably have never painted, everyone paints this way, I thought he was going to show something with a spray gun or combination with roller etc
I usually paint this way but my wife decided to hire someone because I was going to take too long, he used a spray gun, he scraped and sanded and replaced boards upgraded windows, but I am not happy with the outcome, I still see the old paint lines or nail holes, he put two layers only and said that is good enough does not need more layers but I am used to putting lots of paint. I don't know what to do.
You said it right 90 percent of non professional painters cannot figure out how to keep a wet edge. I've even seen many professional painters who have a hard time keeping a wet edge. To make it look good you must not brush into semi dry paint.
In my neck of the woods, white base paints dry so fast that you wouldn't be able to lay off the roller mess with the brush. The best pros here strictly use a brush only on lap siding, or if they're desperate to save time, maybe roll, without back brushing. Brushing is not as slow as you make it sound, especially given that you're jumping up and down ladders, roofs etc, much easier to do with just a pot and a brush.
The more tint there is in paint, the slower it dries. I know this from experience. Here's a quote from Dulux Australia: "The speed of dry can be noticeably slowed (especially in humid conditions) by high colourant levels because the non-drying glycols / surfactants that are present act as slow evaporating solvents that keep the applied paint film wetter for a longer time period. This delayed drying time can sometimes be twice as long as expected."
I have those grooved cedar shakes popular in the 1950's and applying with a roller then brushing it out is the only way to go... Definitely 10 times as fast... Two people is best... One with roller one with brush following.
@@RickBushell1958 ... That's a fact... I live in an area where all the houses (about 60) were all sided with it... Now I am the only fool left who still has them. But I was always a non conformist... I like the look. They'll be painted one last time( I've done it twice)... Getting too old to deal with the aggravation. Can't scrape the old paint... I do a careful pressure wash... But it still chews up the cedar.
Hi rick that system will only work on that house there are different other weather boards that over lap which you cut along under neat and then u can use a small roller but I find it just as quick to brush them....
Derek, I can guarantee you you couldn't keep up with me. Out of all the years I've painted there has only been a handful of painters that could. At the end of the day, you do what works for you. Btw, I paint all weather boards using this system, even the ones that overlap! Careful Dereck, I'm a real painter!! LOL :)
id say I probably could cause iv being in this game long time to and I know all about speed and efficiency and to me its all about how productive you are at working brother of the brush as we use to as in the old land . At the end of the day its all about profit but doing a good job..
Maybe, but I doubt it. I use to get nicknames like Nitro or Speedy Ganzales! LOL Maybe click on my FB tab and we can catch up if you're ever up north of Sydney! Oh, and bring some of that Jameson's!! :) I can surely tell you some stories.
maybe some day when I go back there and yes have a nice wee drop one you should try is called black bushmill this much nicer than Jameson's cheers for now .....
Just finished the first half of our house after a week of prep and 4 more days painting. Figured out the roller trick on our own on the last day... 2 days ago 🤦♂️
The problem I see with using the roller to apply a heavy coat of paint so you can brush it in is gravity. Once you have a heavy coat on there it will start to run and drip on the ground. I try to use a hvlp sprayer as much as possible. The avarge Joe can go to Harbor fright and pick one up for less then $150.00 but always make sure you back roll everything you spray on
The video was for the benefit of diy's that won't be spraying. Lots of diy's like that here. Only brush work, I was simply showing how to speed the process up with a roller. Cheap as chips and much faster. as for your gravity theory, it doesn't hold up (lol pun intended). If it's done as I show on the video, there is absolutely no issues.
The paint will run down doing it your way. Funny you don't show the ground in your video. And why are you telling people to use a big roller when a 4 inch Jonny roller and paint cup would work much better and faster. But hey what do I know I've only been doing it for 27 years.
Whatever you say Lloyd, you are obviously the master. My 40 years bows to your 27. Yea, a 4 inch is going to be faster than a 9 inch, I should of known, go figure.
It's not about who's been doing it the longest. It's about facts. I enjoy your videos. you do have some good tips. I just wanted to point out to you and anyone watching the best way to get the job done. I'm not trying to offend you. Sorry if you took it that way.
And more insults, thanks mate. I should maybe work for you for awhile so I could learn how to be a better and faster painter and do it the right way. Seriously Loyd, go bother someone else with all your BS.
I like the video...I have a lot of weatherboard cladding to paint and it didnt occur to me to use a roller as well as a brush. After seeing it done I can better appreciate it covers well overall and speeds up the application to the long flat areas. Thank you.
i have standard hardi-plank running horizontal. the fastest method for me was to use a quality 3/4" nap and load it well with paint. i rolled up and down. 1/2" or 3/8" were no good. with 3/4" i could easily push a bunch of paint into the overhang gaps. sure there was some excess paint released each time i rolled over an overhang, but the roller would eventually pick up the excess once it released enough paint. i only had to brush around windows and door trim. i used sherwin williams best and only one coat. it has been 3 years and the paint has not faded nor has it bubbled or chipped off anywhere. we have 100F summers and 0F winters. I even painted the visible cement foundation with the same stuff and it has remained perfect, as well! the old paint was chalky to the touch, so in prep i used a stiff broom w/ 18ft extension, chlorine and dish soap from a small backpack sprayer, and scrubbed the siding good before powerwashing afterward. i was going to hire out the job, but the half dozen contractors who came on site were lazy asses, so i did it myself. i rarely contract anything anymore, because everyone else sucks.
mcconn746 What do you mean? Sound is coming out both speakers for me. Do you mean this video is double mono and not true "2 channel" because it was't recorded with a "stereo" mic?
That was great.. I’ve an idea though.. You go: 1- cutting 2- roller paint 3- brush to fill grooves and so on How about we go: 1- roller paining almost to the ends 2- brush for filling grooves/cutting
I had to replace some vinyl siding today and the replacements don't quite matching the color. So, I will be painting them. Should the new vinyl sidings be primed first?
Yea, something should be done to them. I don't know if I've ever painted vinyl siding before. Probably needs to be etched somehow before priming. Maybe wipe over with lacquer thinner or acetone first. Also don't use a water base primer. Let me know how you go? good luck mate :)
I use to work for a panting company. You're 100% right about you want to tap the brush on both sides and not wipe it on the edges. 90% of people who don't know how to paint do that and then look at me like i'm nuts when I tap my brush on 2 sides fast.
Matty Natural Horsemanship I rarely even tap, just a flick actually, but the tap is a great habit to form for a diy, soooo much faster if they can force themselves to do it. Hard to break bad habits. Thanks for posting 👍
What does the tapping of yr brush on side of pail actually do? Is it so paint doesn’t drip and brush is better loaded than wiping it half off on the side of the paint can?
thanks for the video.. much appreciated. I've got an old cabin to paint. This will go a long way in helping me. One thing.. you mentioned a video clip about how to load a roller at the 11.15 mark but there's no link that I could find. If you see this and have the link I'd love to see it. Cheers!
In 1961 a farmer in Ohio painted his whole house in 10 minutes. (after he and his wife taped paper over all the windows.) He rented one of those setups the state used to paint tall water towers. 15 Ft vertical set of nozzles with a gas powered compressor. Pulled it around the house with his tractor. Then he did his barn!!! I posted this for everyone to have a laugh. IT DID HAPPEN THATS NO JOKE!!!!
@@thomasrobinette3227 What do you mean; what do I mean? I described pretty clearly how an Ohio farmer painted his house in very short order. It might be funny but that's how it was done. What more do you want? Duh.
Sorry but that Shane, but the customer wanted it the same color. Nothing I could do about that. Would of been perfect for video to have a different color. No worries, the process is exactly the same. Happy painting mate :)
This appears to be a beaded siding that has flat surface. can the roller technique be used on lap cedar siding where you have a 3/8" to 1/2" overlap at the bottom with a vertical surface that needs to be painted? I assume the heavy paint application provides enough paint so that when your back brushing you have the paint to catch the overlap? Thoughts? Thank you, Rick
Hi Jim, no problem. Using the roller is just a tool to help speed things up. And speeding up, I mean less dipping with the brush. With the shingles tho, you're going to have to experiment a bit on applying your flood coat (roller) and using more brush work I'm afraid. Good luck
I was waiting for you to say, 100 times faster just throw the whole gallon of paint on the house to save time from having to dip your roller in the 5 gallon bucket 😂 J/K. Great video!
Does anyone scuff sand between first and second top coat? If not, what would you say is minimum time before one has to sand a recently applied first coat? Thanks!
Not many diy's sand anything. But yea, I do and the time allowed before 'scuff' sanding will always change depending on many different factors. You'll know if it's too soon. Just make sure to allow enough time to dry.
@@nowirehangers2815 It's not the fact it is weatherboards but the paint you are painting over. Having said that, you could probably get away without sanding, it's just the way I was brought up in the paint game, "If you are going to paint it, sand it" :)
Would rollers still save time on a weatherboard house? I can see rollers would be very effective on cladding that is flat but weatherboards are on an angle with an exposed side. I can see it being fiddly with potential paint wasteage.
I like the technique and I've tried to use some of this already. Issue is when you're 10-20 feet off the ground on a ladder. Also tried a paint sprayer by Wagner and worked great on one side of the house, but then totally crapped out.
LOL, the very reason lots of people hire the pros. Yea, the high stuff can be daunting. I'm assuming you've got the little electric sprayer? Not designed for big jobs.

Use to prepare and paint
one side of house each year -- one weekend to prepare (scape, repair or replace wood etc...) and second weekend
for painting.
Mahalo!!!
Good stuff, nice effort. This is exactly why I create diy painting videos. To help others. Thanks for commenting. :)
All the best mate
charredskeleton after seeing this, I cannot wait to paint my house, even though it doesn’t need painting. M🤓
We sprayed probably 98 percent of the houses we painted for clients, but made this for those not wanting to use a sprayer.
Gotcha! Keep up the good work friend - very good video your sharing with those who need the encouragement along the way. Mega Blessings!
Mr. Invincible painter,
You're killing us as painters giving away our techniques lol.

Awesome, thanks so much for passing on your expertise in this thorough video
No worries, my pleasure :)
Great video mate thank you. I am in the process of buying a house which needs a lot of work and this will be one of my reference videos for DIY work. Much appreciated.
Ambrew, happy it helps. All the best on your painting projects. 👌
Thank you for helping us the DIY community.😊👍
Any time!
Also wanted to thank you. I'm 71 years old and am inspired to paint my house one side at a time. This will help.

I’m 76 and just bought a brick house with a lot of wood trim. My son and I will be painting that soon. Good tips.
I like your energy and way of teaching. Seem like a great guy, thank you for the video!
thank you! spent ages with a brush yesterday and knew there had to be a faster way to get this house done and there is. you are the best!
Glad I could help!
I have 4 inch clap board. Not sure I can use a big roller because of the angle. But even a small roller would speed thing up. Thanks for the tip.
I worked with an old painter and he always had the biggest brush loaded to the max with paint. When you work by the hour attention to detail is critical.. when you work by the job redbull gives you wings.
LOL, I don't need redbull Dan, I'm already an angel. :) Thanks mate
💥 Thanks for your time sharing this. It looks pretty simple rolling and brushing standing on the ground but show this on a ladder hitting the second story.
I have a video showing just that. We used to paint 3 story's in San Francisco using 40 ft ladders. :)
Where do I get this cool invisible paint?!
Thank you!! Very helpful as I am about to embark on painting our house!
I prefer full brush work! Become one with the brush and paint. I'm currently on 'God Mode: Level 2 - Master With Dual Brushes'
I have a buddy stand on the roof dropping tubs of paint down.. while I go full Bruce Lee on the weatherboards utilizing my master brush skills!
Looks fabulous groovy, mop that paint in!
Thanks for taking time to help a novice do it yourselfer.
No worries Jerry, always liked to help. 😊
UncleBman Good onya, and well done.
I thought he was gunna whip out a sprayer and finish it all in 5 minutes. lol

It's worn Hardie board. Hasn't been painted in 15 years.
The slow part of painting the entire exterior of a house by yourself is the prep work. The painting part is smooth sailing.

Thanks for your reply! find these videos extremely helpful! I will keep your videos on standby while I do this.
Seems insane for a person to spray (and backroll) when they can do it like this. So much simpler, so much less cleanup--particularly if you wrap the roller cover.
Would work well too
if you rolled ,say,5 boards (vertically) or up and down as opposed to sideways.By doing so you would also fill the gaps between boards with paint making it that much easier to brush it all out.
Number one, I could see it being harder for the diy, also, by filling in the 'gaps' you would have to be constantly checking back to brush out runs. Even being careful to NOT fill in the gaps, you still get the occasional run.
excellent advice from a guy who quite obviously never tried it. did you really think nobody had ever thought of rolling the paint on vertically...?
I learned lots. Never thought of a roller. Thanks.
Obviously you are a pro - a pleasure to watch and learn. Thank you.
Please do a video on painting a garage door. Thanks!
Simple extended pole cuts down on your ladder work, roll a heavy coat of paint , then back brush and cut in at the same time , can do a lot from the ground with 1 roller pole 1 brush holder pole.
I actually use this technique when painting my Soffits and Fascia Good tips
Use a quality 4in brush for painting exterior siding, and setting up 2 ladders and running a plank gives you a lot more room to move
+Painting Palm Beach Yep, it sure does. :)
Thank you! This is how it get done! We are thankful for paint sprayers
Great video. The techniques are awesome but he also knows how make a video fly
Also get a pole for your roller. Roll up and down, then finish with your brush. It will save your back and arms
Lol dude. No. I'm laughing over here. Have you really tried that on an exterior? What a god damn disaster. No wonder this guy switched to making lasagnas; it's hopeless.

i would also recommend using a pure bristle holds a lot paint than a synthetic
Pure bristle/china bristle are designed for oil base materials, not water base. They are getting more and more rare these days too, with brush companies designing filament brushes for oil base now. I've never had any issue with filaments not holding enough paint.

I'm painting the exterior of my house within the next couple weeks and definitely learned a bunch watching this video and appreciate the tips! Thanks!! 👍🏼👍🏼🏡
No worries mate, glad you got some things from it. What it's all about. :)
He did a horrible prep, it seems? Should of filled nail holes. A good prep real makes the difference.
If brush out the groove first then use a velour mini roller on the flat part you won’t have to lay it off with a brush, much faster
You said it right 90 percent of non professional painters cannot figure out how to keep a wet edge. I've even seen many professional painters who have a hard time keeping a wet edge. To make it look good you must not brush into semi dry paint.
Nice tips mate. I'm about to undertake painting my house so glad I watched this.
Not sure how you get white base paint dries faster than other coloured paints. Paint is paint, but each to their own I quess.
Really would be nice if you said what nap roller you were using.
Great video ,thanks a bunch. Now I can pass it on to my people. Many thanks..Pros are the best!!!!!
I have those grooved cedar shakes popular in the 1950's and applying with a roller then brushing it out is the only way to go... Definitely 10 times as fast... Two people is best... One with roller one with brush following.
Those where the worst things ever invented for cladding. God, I hated prepping those! Have fun mate. :)
@@RickBushell1958 ... That's a fact... I live in an area where all the houses (about 60) were all sided with it... Now I am the only fool left who still has them. But I was always a non conformist... I like the look.

We never realized we were embarking on a 3-4 week endeavour. Heavily textured live edge cedar full of knots sure didn’t help.
@@jborcz1014 But you got there in the end. well done. :)
I like this technique, first time saver that I've seen that didn't involve an airless paint sprayer.
I like the video...I have a lot of weatherboard cladding to paint and it didnt occur to me to use a roller as well as a brush. After seeing it done I can better appreciate it covers well overall and speeds up the application to the long flat areas. Thank you.
Good onya Joeman, it does exactly that. Good luck and glad you like the video. :) Thanks

Hi great tips. More please. Question. Have you ever used" habitat for humanity , Visions ? Its 100.00 per 5 gallon.
i have standard hardi-plank running horizontal. the fastest method for me was to use a quality 3/4" nap and load it well with paint. i rolled up and down.

@@RawFitChris All I know is that I only heard it from my left headphone speaker. Most of the other videos were in both speakers.
@@RawFitChris I don't know, it was quite awhile ago.
Good job there. I do it almost the same way, all depends on conditions like you said.
Semi related question... When painting house trim where power lines are connected to the house, can i get within inches of the line to paint trim?
I can't answer that question for safety reasons. s'orry
That was great.. I’ve an idea though.. You go:
1- cutting
2- roller paint
3- brush to fill grooves and so on
How about we go:
1- roller paining almost to the ends
2- brush for filling grooves/cutting
Note, clap boards paint faster than cedar shingles.
That was very good mate, good on ya.
Thanks Jaime, glad you liked it. :)
Without masking anything, cutting in and moving the brush that fast was impressive.
LOL, i had a lot of years slappin a brush around. :) Thanks for commenting.
This video is so surreal
thanks for the video.. much appreciated. I've got an old cabin to paint. This will go a long way in helping me. One thing.. you mentioned a video clip about how to load a roller at the 11.15 mark but there's no link that I could find. If you see this and have the link I'd love to see it. Cheers!
I'ts an old one but should do the trick :) th-cam.com/video/xdb9fslQCB0/w-d-xo.html
My father is a great painter and he does those things
In 1961 a farmer in Ohio painted his whole house in 10 minutes. (after he and his wife taped paper over all the windows.) He rented one of those setups the state used to paint tall water towers. 15 Ft vertical set of nozzles with a gas powered compressor. Pulled it around the house with his tractor. Then he did his barn!!!
I posted this for everyone to have a laugh. IT DID HAPPEN THATS NO JOKE!!!!
So, why you laugh? I need to paint house for inspector in NO TIME!
What do you mean?
@@thomasrobinette3227 What do you mean; what do I mean?
I described pretty clearly how an Ohio farmer painted his house in very short order. It might be funny but that's how it was done.
What more do you want? Duh.
@@frederickwise5238 oh! I read your last sentence as "it DIDNT happen". Hahaha
@@thomasrobinette3227 (the grass around the house was a little worse for "the wear" from the spray that fell but a few mowings fixed that.) LOL
Paint sticks are great too, no re-dipping
I'm noticing that the color of new paint is too close to what's already on the house that I can't see what you have done.
Thoughts?
Thank you,
Rick
Just about any siding can be painted using this technique.
Did not see in the comments,so I'll ask - how would you adapt this for shaker singles?
Hi Jim, no problem. Using the roller is just a tool to help speed things up. And speeding up, I mean less dipping with the brush. With the shingles tho, you're going to have to experiment a bit on applying your flood coat (roller) and using more brush work I'm afraid. Good luck
I was waiting for you to say, 100 times faster just throw the whole gallon of paint on the house to save time from having to dip your roller in the 5 gallon bucket 😂 J/K. Great video!
LOL, another video for another time mate. When I have the time to clean up the mess! :) Thanks for your comment.
@@RickBushell1958 why do you do that please? i know its for the end appearance, but is it necessary on weatherboard? thanks again
Charles Olson it would still be faster, but of course it’s up to you.
Fantastic, thanks so much!!
You're very welcome!
How would I keep it from dripping if I put that much on?
Constantly Keep your brush or roller moving to spread the paint, if you overload your area with paint you gotta keep it moving and manipulating it.
11:36 you didn't go all the way across the boards, there are columns missing fresh paint
Absolute no idea what you are even on about mate!
If you painted right across the boards wet like you suggest, how did you end up with these patches? imgur.com/cNXMKwO
Just by watching this video my house painted itself in 10mins
Wow thanks
CTRwannaB you must have one of those smart homes, lol
A paint roller?????? When did they invent this great product?
I’m trying to hand paint my brick house. The guy at Home Depot or Lowe’s told me to do a coat of dry-lok first. It’s taking me years. Help.
Invincible Painting Basics flexion. My son painted an entire side of house no issues. It crapped out on me on the next section. Got those finished manual style and now have to hold off for a few months for the Texas heat!!!
