  • The pre-teen period of a child's life is a universally awkward experience. However, as media and technology have developed, so have the harmful influences and expectations we put on kids, specifically, young girls. We must do our part in supporting and healthily guiding them in their growth rather than guide them towards unrealistic and unattainable expectations for themselves. Jamila Mata is a Filipino-American senior at Moreau Catholic High School, who is focused on understanding different cultural experiences as well as embracing her own. An avid reader, she enjoys opening up and developing conversations about different traditions, lifestyles, and media. She hopes to devote herself to a life of service, cultural enrichment and knowledge, as well as teach others about the importance of dedicating oneself to learning and emotional growth. Currently, she is President of Moreau Catholic's Anime Club and strives to make the communities she is a part of a safe and enjoyable environment. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This! I feel that today’s youth face a lot more pressure to be what they see online and get judge by others or worse judge themselves by the inability to do so. It is impossible for youth nowadays to keep up with the toxic trend of never ending social media influence and this definitely takes a toll on mental health, confidence and self identity.
Bravo Jam! I love how you see things in bigger perspectives! You’re going places! 🫶🏻

tbh, we all needed to hear that euphoria slander, it’s so sexualizing for teenagers 🫢 (great insight jam, thx for sharing!)
