I bought two 1984 Honda 350s, one XR and one XL. No title for either. Went to Utah DMV, and they gave me paperwork to fill out and have a cop come and inspect serial numbers and file a report. If clean, then I'll get more instructions. But it doesn't sound like Utah is nearly as much hoop-jumping as CO. I've been nervous, but with your link to the vin report, neither one shows any bad history, so thanks for that.
thanks for sharing! it took me 6 months to get a title for a used motorcycle! Lienholders, blah blah blah, I paid cash but it was horrible! I guess at some point "the people" decided we need to cover all the bases to make sure someone doesn't get screwed. but geez! lots of hoops for an honest guy trying to make an honest transaction.
What a mess! If the process is that involved in Colorado I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like here in California! That really sucks man but hopefully you get it all straightened out soon!
Doing good buddy, thanks for asking. Man O Live, what a deal, It is not hardly even possible to make a dirt bike street legal here. Holy smokes, what a deal, does not sound like fun at all. I will say this, you are doing a great job sticking with it and I am sure by the time you make this bike street legal, it will be well worth all the non-sense you have been though to get it there. Thanks again for sharing and have a blessed week.
The exact thing happened to me when I bought a wrecked bike from an insurance company. Long story short, I paid 400$ for a wrecked motorcycle. Paid 600$ to get it road worthy. Paid 900$ for the paperwork. Still was a great bike but dang that paperwork stung.
The NICB database only shows vehicles that were stolen AND insured... If you don't have it insured, and it gets stolen, and someone checks that database, it won't show. SO you should ALWAYS call the police first when buying on bill of sale, and they will run the VIN and tell you if it is stolen. Just because it doesn't snow in NICB doesn't mean it isn't stolen. :(
I ended up getting rid of my $600 beater Amigo because of the same thing.... when watching your previous videos I always assumed that you were somewhere around where I lived in the foothills. When you pointed out that fake cow, I finally paid attention and know exactly where you are. :-) ( I meant for that to come off creepy) I plowed that place a few years ago. and was on that road about 5 hours ago on my DRZ.
Just thinking to myself, imagine someone getting hit with that for their first bike! I had a friend who had troubles with two cars in a row due to bad titles, so I became extra cautious about title stuff. Hope it works out for you!
Ah mate thats a pain but sounds like you got it sorted so well done and thx for posting the educational vid! If you feel like researching how to do all that in Vic Australia I would appreciate you posting a vid on that too :)
Wish I caught this video earlier. I thought I'd be aware of what I was getting into, but not this deep. Currently jumpstarting the process for a Shadow I recently picked up. But I'm not too dire as it's not my only means to get around. The process for a bonded title seems pretty similar down south here in NM!!
We'll see what happens. I still need to get the bond itself and then send the entire packet to Albuquerque for processing. A 1-3 month process. I at least pulled the VIN and checked it out and found not a thing!!
I had a CRF 150F bought for my GF to learn on. I picked it up for a good deal, at least I thought it was. I had found out the same as you have about a bill of sale and getting a real title for it. I sold it 3 mos later with a bill of sale. It wasn't worth the time and effort I 'll never again buy without a title.
I bought a TTR250 with a signed MSO here in Nevada and they wont let me plate it since I'm not the original owner and I can't get a hold of the original dude this sucks
tell you right now i went through this problem with my yamaha and that database isnt accurate at all i was even talking to sherriffs and they said there database wont show it i was in tx and bike was from California
Can you give me a logical answer why Honda doesn't make a XR400 or 450 dual sport my XR 650L would go. The process you just went through is exactly what Oregon does to.I bought a KTM 525 with no tittle. Honda needs to think about this.
ohh my..here in ON, CAN I get an affidafid from lawyer $25 I claim my due diligence as trying to contact previous owner in writing..easy peasy. with his sig its mine
That sucks dude. I had something similar with my first bike. I bought a mint Ninja 250 off this really nice chick. She was having trouble selling it. People would ask some questions about the title and vin, then she'd never hear from them again. So she dropped the price really low. I didn't think anything of it at the time. Hand her $1300, which was $1700 less than blue book at the time, and she signs over the title. Just thought "fuggin sweet. Got me a bike for an incredible price!!"... Get home and look at the tile?!? Massive "Lien" stamped across the top. FUUUUUUUUUUUUU Start calling banks. One bank sold the account to another, who sold it to yet another, and then an other... then back to the first bank again. Just following the crazy web. Terrified that I'm out $1300 and/or a bike I fell in love with. Over 20 calls to different banks begging for help. No one could tell me who owned the lien... because (and this was the part where my spirits lifted).... No one DID own the lien. Had to get in touch with the records department, not open accounts... The account had been satisfied by the first owner, and they never requested a new title. (NY is one of the few (maybe only) states where a title can be transferred, and debt associated with that property does not necessarily transfer with the title to the new owner.) NY is dumb. Any how, I requested a Release of Lien... got the bike registered/insured and was super happy it worked out. I victory punched the air a shitload of times. I wrecked the bike 2 months later. face palm/
Holy crap, that was an awesome story up to the last line. I feel like I just got gut punched. Sorry it ended that way, hope you didn't get hurt too bad.
Thanks bro. Hope your bike works out for you too! Yea I walked away from it with just dislocated ribs (was fully geared up). I was a noob and panic braked on a downhill chicane. High-sided myself into a curb, head and back first. Had just installed a back protector into my jacket, thankfully. Took the insurance money and bought a used DRZ. Winning!
Yeah, when I shot it was just thinking out loud like I always do. Then I saw the first edit and it was 12+ minutes talking about paperwork. Then it got knocked down to 8 minutes and still sucked. Then I wanted to do a PIP with puppies or something, but didn't have time unless I wanted to skip a week and I didn't.
Wow sorry to here that story that does kinda suck. I thought Id leave ya a comment to maybe give ya a bit of a bright side though. I have a clean titled 1998 XR 400 that I love but I had to dish out $2500 for mine because the previous owner new what he had and wouldn't budge. It is in pretty good condition with the Dakar dual sport kit and it was the least expensive one, of very few for sale at the time, that I could find in a 500 mile radius. I think if I remember you got yours for a great price! Like around a grand maybe? So even after the hassle and the extra bit of cash you still got a great bike for a great deal in my opinion! Cant wait to see how you tricked it out.
That sounds like such a massive hassle! What I got out of this video: if you buy a bike, get the title. :D
Or get it cheap enough that it's worth the hassle.
eveRide ADV pretty much what I got out of it too lol
+1 on that one. I hate hassles. I will pay extra for no hassles.
or register it with vermount problem solved

Excellent information, never heard of that database before, thanks.
Sure thing!

Thanks!
I'm about to go through the same thing with my xr400 in Tennessee. Sounds easier and cheaper than I thought.
Yep you'll go through all of that, and it was an error at the DMV to begin with. Good luck Hermit!!
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I went through some of the same stuff when I had to get a new title for my last bike. I feel your pain
Thanks. It'll work out.
We're here for you hermit.
Thanks!
Doing good buddy, thanks for asking.

Wow, what a hassle, Hermit. Good luck!
Thanks!
In Illinois it is quite common not to register offroad vehicles. It costs $100+ to apply for a title.
Really that's it. You can steal a dirt bike and get a title and plate by just kicking in an extra $100? That's some mafia BS there.
No, you have to pay $100 to have it put in your name. My sons bike has a signed title from 2 owners back. No one wants to pay the $100.
That's a lot of sneaking around for a bike that your wife doesn't know about :D
Funny story: She was in getting something out of the shop one day and says "Hey wait a minute, 1, 2, 3, 4... YOU GOT ANOTHER ONE!"
Haha, The question that makes every man cringe :D
Hermit DaVlog The moment you realize your wife can count.

Massive bummer :/ Makes buying used so risky and tedious.
Yep, definitely gotta deal with crap sometimes when you buy used.
Just for the record, it took me 10 min to find the guy on facebook and get an answer from him. Thanks internets.

Good point. Depending on where it was stolen your home owners policy could cover it.
oh you were that guy throwing the tantrum at the DMV.
Yeah, the one carried out with his hands and feet bound with zip ties. That was me.
I think that's my bike and I am making a claim on it. Stay safe
I knew you'd say that.
I ended up getting rid of my $600 beater Amigo because of the same thing....

Well that sucks!
Pretty much.
Thanks for the video! I always wondered what that bonded title thing was for. Hope it works out for ya....
Me too.
Good luck brotha!
Thanks!
That. Sucks.
Yeah. It'll work out eventually.
Sorry least your on the XR250 looks like a beautiful day.

Wow. That is a mountain of red tape.
Not a picnic.
Im always on the dirt bike diet this time of year haha! 270 to 255 so far...my poor suspension...
Keep the hammer down. Spring is here.
Wow that ruff you put all that work into the bike then you have to go though all of that.
Exactly.

Nah, it aint, but it's better than nothing.
Is this is the same process for a car?
I live in Colorado...where are you riding in this video? Thanks...
Great video. I always ck the vin # before I buy. Ride safe my 2 wheel friends.
Good advice.
boo sauce. Sorry that happened to you, bro.

'cause he's a jerk.
