Man’s Childhood Message in a Bottle Found 27 Years Later

- After 27 years, a childhood message in a bottle was found. In 1995, a group of best friends wrote a message in a bottle and tossed it into the bayou just outside Houston, Texas. Twenty-seven years later, Terry Pettijohn was cleaning a beach with volunteers when he found the bottle. Pettijohn turned to Facebook to find the people listed on the note. Finally, he was able to connect with Brian Standefer. Turns out the bottle only traveled two miles from the place of origin.

The net distance it traveled was 2 miles, but It actually traveled all around the world, saw all the wonders and horrors of the world, and decided it was time to come back to his friends to finally rest.

When I was about 10 I put a message in a baby food jar. They have a really good rubber seal on the inside so I thought it would stay sealed well. Plus it was small. I went down to the river (102 river) in my super small town (under 75 ppl) in rural SW Iowa. About 2 years later, I got a letter from someone in Central MO. My bottle had made it all the way to the Missouri river (which feeds in to the Mississippi and then the ocean if It had kept going, and I knew this). There had been a flood that year and the people that found it were farmers. They had gone out to their fields to pick up trash and found it.
I recommend ever kid do this once in their life.
Why? I prefer every kid volunteer for a 1 day "Beach Clean Up" once in their life, so they can see the environmental impact of your proposal.

That is so neat. To think of all the time, storms, hurricanes, & yet for it to only travel 2 miles. I think it was more than coincidence that they found it within a couple of years of their friend’s passing. Def a message from him. Too cool. ❤️🍾🌊

What I find interesting is that most of the bottles date from 30 years ago the position of moon determines each one
I wish I could do this in reverse. If I could write my 18 year old self a letter it would save me from a lot of anxiety, depression, and PTSD😩😩

i don't think the person before those illnesses could have anything to say that would magically prevent them from occurring. it's like at my lowest point i thought me being a mom someday would be the reason I keep going, now I don't even want to be a mom🤣

About the phone number:
My family had the same house phone number ( a land line ) from March 1965 Through March of 2021 after my mother died. That's about 56 years.

It's always a good idea to send a message to your future self, as you don't know how much you will change and when you might need it.
The Ocean Cleanup has found that the vast majority of plastic waste flowing from rivers ends up back on shore, relatively close to the source. Only a small fraction floats out across the oceans. This bottle's short journey is consistent with those findings.

My grandmas cousin had a similar situation. When he was a kid he found a turtle a etched his name into the turtles shell, 30 years later he found the same turtle
For those of you in the comments too young to remember. the whole bottle with a message was a huuuuuge deal in the late 80s . Almost every kid made theirs. I was 8 in the late 80s i fond memories from the worst decade ever .
Messages in bottles have been a thing forever.I'm sure I did that as far back as the early 60s.

I don’t fault them for answering the question the way they did; afterall they were being interviewed for a TV/recorded segment, so they likely wanted to go with the flow.

I didn’t think anything of it till they mention there friend passed ! I lost my best friend in a wreck. I went back to the spot. To try and heal. And I found his earrings. Hit pops told me they where his gift to me 😞. I keep one close to me all the time.
