UPS Driver Collapses at Front Door From Severe Heat

  • As record-high temperatures continue across the nation, there's a new concern for UPS delivery drivers. In Arizona, a UPS driver struggled to make it onto the front porch of a house. He then collapses and lies down for a moment to recover. The UPS worker slowly gets back up and reaches for the doorbell before stumbling back to his non air-conditioned truck. UPS says the driver is fine, adding "our package delivery vehicles make frequent stops, making air conditioning ineffective."

I used to work for a major package delivery company. The trucks don't have AC, and they aren't insulated. You add the heat from the sun, the physical activity, and the engine, and you find the limits of the human body quick. I've had to on multiple occasions cobble together a water mist system out of a beverage cooler and a battery powered pump to hose myself down and cool off. Before that, I was dumping bottles of water over myself and chugging down liquids just to keep up with the heat. I can only imagine how bad it much be in the desert sun.

As an Amazon driver, we have AC’s in our vans, and even getting a bit of cold air from the AC makes a difference. I do package delivery by van and and air conditioning does not work with frequent stops we do. Ends up just eating up gas. So we balance it out with adjusting delivery times to early morning or early to late evening to make it tolerable. But that takes a lot greater planning and is still tough to do but that's the job.

I own and operate a lawn care service for 20 plus years in Minnesota. I remember around this time it was as hot and dry here as the Sierra Desert was being reported. No rain for weeks and nothing but consecutive day after day of excessive heat warnings. Breaking all types of records. All types of water bans throughout the summer on using sprinklers on your lawn. Darn near took me out of business. The last two summers in Minnesota have been the Hottest/Driest in my 20 plus year career doing this. It seems very odd and i’m hoping this year will be cooler than the last two. One thing i recommend if you work outside in heat other than the obvious things. Get yourself a battery operated fan around your neck. I can’t live without them at work. 10-20 dollar fan saves lives. I have 4-5 on rotation.
