I put one of these on an older Schwinn bike in January. Updated the brakes, new tires. This thing flies. It can work in pedal assist mode where it looks like you’re just riding a bike. It has a throttle which I only tend to use at startups crossing a street or when pulling out of a turn when It’s too soon to pedal. Fun. Today I got it up to 38 MPH. I typically use power assist 2 or 3. Average around 15 MPH and cruise at 18 to 20 when I have the room. Got over 250 miles on it since the upgrade. I have discovered bike trails that I was unaware of because riding manually limited my distance from home. At 69 this makes me feel like I’m 30.😎
Still great. During the last winter I didn’t ride it as much after putting 1000 miles on it. When I decided to ride it again it appeared the battery wasn’t charging up fully. So I rode it a couple of times and recharged it. The second charge was better. Finally the last charge was back to normal. It was stored at 50% charge over the winter. I recently acquired a retro Columbia bike. It’s a remake of a 50’s model remade in the 80’s. Ive actually neglected the eBike since getting this retro bike. Anyway, no issues with the conversion.😎
@@comfortablynumb8832 No I didn't. I did replace the chain, new brake pads, and ebike rated tires. I just ride like a cruiser so not a lot of shifting etc.
At min 15 the walk feature is genius. Saved me carrying a 40-50lbs bike uphill and trough the woods. The BBSHD is rated at "cargo" it's heavy duty. You really don't to go much faster or worry about small weight differences. This machine is a beast!
I have this same set-up. But don't have a throttle. Only pedal assist. You're range and speed dovetails with what I can keep track of. You say that pedal assist gives you about 60% of the available power and the throttle gives you all available power. I believe you, and I can see that in your video when you use the throttle. I love this system. No complaints at all. Fastest I've been is 40+MPH going down a hill. Roll between 15-20MPH all the time with very little effort. Nice video. Thanks for making it.
This is the best most informative review of this unit on the internet so far - good work. Thanks very much. A progress report would be useful also if you can find the time. Cheers from NZ.
I will try and do an update video on this bike, been going strong for nearly 2 years now! That is without pedaling, to be honest anything above about 30kms/hr with peddling is a bit useless, its just too quick for your legs to keep up.
Love it! All that power and yet so quiet.🍻 Really neat conversion job, too.👏👏 Good cable management, from what I could tell.👍 I've just ordered the BBSO2, 750W kit. I'm in the UK though, with its ridiculous 250W restriction, so keep it under your hat, OK everybody?😉🤝
bro. I have the 750w kit. Love it. However, know that you will have to DIY the DIY things. It took me and my dad three days to install. Maybe it's cus we were a little unorthodox, but still. Also, you may not even need to have it go at its 34mph speed. For me, 26mph is more than enough. I bought the 750w because of the amount of torque it has. I plan on going uphill a lot. It's pretty good.
@@niceboy761 I got all my materials from Ali Express and Amazon. It's the Bafang 48v 750w mid drive. I bought a 20ah battery with it as well, and it can go 30 miles if you go around 15mph with it on throttle, about 10 more miles if you do pedal assist
I own the bbs02. It's still very powerful for a bicycle. So amazing that I save almost half of the time on commuting. Also I find the speedometer is very accurate. It is only 1 or 2 off the gps.
@@ForWhomBellstols It depends on the assisted level and your battery. I use it with a 48V 15Ah LPF battery. Among the 5 assisted level I settle on level 2, with the average speed of 40kph when pedaling, the battery will give me 40+km of range. With level 1 pedal assist, I estimate around 70km. Remember the assisted level of bbs02 is speed oriented. You go higher then you go faster, but only to a certain extent. If you have a custom controller then that's another story.
Haaaaaa you actually made a video!!!! AWESOME review I just sent the link to Ewan, you mentioned every little detail, this will help a lot of people =] Well done!
+Fresh Anything - Yeah.... remember we were in the Carpark talking about making videos, how I started my channel (kinda by accident) with one single video that got lots of views... I hope this video does the same to you!!!! I can tell that this video here will get LOTS OF VIEWS. If you're serious about the channel thing, I can recommend some really cool TH-cam tools that helped me and many other channels to grow bruno2bari@gmail.com ....yeahhh so much POWER!!
Thanks for making this video. I found it very helpful. This is the most comprehensive video I have seen regarding the Bafang mid-drive system. Thanks again.
I love an MTB set up for tarmac. They look purposeful somehow. I have a SS Trek 4500 alpha with slicks and a 203mm front disc, Rock shox and nothing else. It weighs in at 25lbs even. Nice bike mate.
I went 21 miles in 55 minutes throttle only on the 48V 17.5Ah battery. Plenty of 25 mph stuff and some ups and downs so pretty good range. Charged up and used 614Wh - only 3/4 of the battery! Going 35 to 40 does drink it though.
Ive just made myself a 750watt one and yeah the front chain sprocket is a pain on mine too. I loved the way you did this video. i will be doing a video on my conversion and riding soon. thanks.
brett3060 make sure you change the chain wheel because the original one will rip your chain apart and is so heavy and jerky and makes the whole experience less enjoyable. Stay safe and have fun! Don't bring attention to yourself! Most peeps don't know I'm on an electric bike because I also pedal and it's so quiet...
Thank you thank you i am building an ebike from the ground up and am trying to decide between 2wd with 2 bafang bpm's or 1wd with a bafang bbshd. Your review was helpful in my quest!
Also, not sure if it was mentioned. But always store liion or Lopo batteries at 3.8v per cell. Will increase the life of your batteries significantly! Never leave batteries fully charged for any longer then needed. (If you care about your battery I guess) I use a Wemo remote PowerPoint.. if I know I need the bike in the morning, I set it to turn on charge at 2am. Tesla cars also do this, only charge as much as is needed for the journey, and use similar 18650 cells.
I purchased the older bb 750. I used a nuvinci 360 automatic hub in the rear with it. Works real good, one chainline so no issues with clunky gear changes or broken chains, It would be even more awesome with the 1000 watt model!
herkko61 hey, didn't make a review, but used the biggest nuvinci sprocket I could find online...22 tooth on the back, and a 34 Raceface narrow/wide tooth on the Bafang. I put it on a Trek Fuel EX full suspension, so I had to add an adjustable spring tensioner, to accomodate for the swingarm movement. I haven't had one instance of the chain coming off, but you CAN feel the flexing in the carbon fiber swingarm when torqing hard! Probably be more solid on a hardtail....that being said, last weekend took some e-bikes and buddies to Spieker mountain. It's a hiking trail, with about 2000 ft elevation over a couple of kms. Real steep! I was on my Giant with a 500 watt geared rear hub motor....I made it about halfway, and cooked my controller 😔. But the bafang/ nuvinci on the Trek Fuel EX climbed the entire trail to the top- with just a 10 amp/hr 48 volt battery!😲 Insane amount of torque! Nuvinci hubs and mid drive motors compliment each other....the motor can spin easily with the super low gearing, and not overheat. I think I was pushing the nuvinci to the limit, though....manufacturer recommends no more than a 500 watt motor driving the nuvinci, but it passed the " stress test" with flying colours! I didn't have an inclination meter in my back pocket, but I swear some of the slopes were over 50 degrees. Had a 2.5" x26" tire at about 20 psi on the back to put a good footprint on the ground. Met some winded hikers on the way down, and they couldn't believe we took bikes up there. I think the nuvinci is very efficient with a middrive motor, and buttery smooth. The Bafang is good with a typical gear cluster on the back hub, but can mash the chain and cassette pretty good, shifting under power. With the nuvinci, there is NO mashing, and power shifting is seamless and silent, so I think that the drivetrain will last longer, with less maintainance. Yes it is a heavier hub, but not noticable with a motor at all. If you were hesitating, wonder no more....you will be extremely pleased with the results!! cheers!
Thank you very much for your reply. I'll use Nuvinci + Bafang only in my city bike, so I think the torque will never be even close to a mountain bike use. Also, the first Nuvinci model should be the toughest to stand the torque. Just wondering because I'm quite a heavy guy. I already changed the rear sprocket to a White Industries' "heavy use" one, 20t if I recall correctly. Then I only need a Raceface 34 narrow/wide, that's all. This 1kW motor must be a beast! :) In my neighborhood there are many very steep hills. I like cycling as exercise but my knees are aching nowadays too much when riding up the hills.
herkko61 my stock chainwheel I got with my Bafang motor was a 44 tooth....I got an aftermarket spider that fit the Bafang motor from Hipower cycles. That way I was able to bolt up a variety of different chainwheels to the Bafang unit....I chose the Raceface 34 tooth for the crazy mountainclimbing torque....overkill for the city. Stock should work great with the nuvinci. I thought I'd tell you about the aftermarket spider...bafang has a 5 bolt pattern thats kinda unique to their brand, which limits your gearing options, I am not sure if they now offer different chainwheel options with the motor...but the spider was cheap, around 20 bucks, if you wanted that option. And then the narrow/wide chainwheels become an option. I like them-they do a great job of keeping the chain on the sprockets!😄
Thanks again Jim. Then I go with the Bafang chainwheel but keep in mind the spider adapter alternative if I later decide to move to mountain biking aswell. In that case I definitely need a spider.
Nice bike. I have a scott sub 20 and i will put a 48 volt 1000watt mid drive 68mm bafang with a 52 volt battery. I am glad to see that it fits your Scott hood because my scott is about the same. I will go with 44 teeth in front. 👍🏼I can't wait to get it. If you would of got a better display head unit you could go faster each head unit has different limiters most are 99 kph the one you purchased cuts out 70 kph but its still fast.
I got the same setup except its 750W motor to make it legal in California (750W max). Very cool setup indeed. I like your other bike accessories as well, i only installed a bike light but thats about it.
I like your set up I got the 500c display with my bbshd because it's all in one I actually got the programming cable so I could have full throttle all the time no matter wot pedal assist I'm in good video man 👍🏾💯
Thanks for the video! One of the more betters ones I've seen! Want to convert my 29er Single Speed MTB with this kit but still thinking if should go geared.
I would probably go geared otherwise you will put too much stress and work on the motor when going up steep hills. I still find I need to treat it as if the motor wasn't there to get the best results..
Going from a hub wheel where it doesn't matter what gear you're in to this has a been a steep learning curve but getting used to it and the mechanical resistance is so minimal that I use it with no power 50% of the time :D
I've got a BBSO2, with a 17.5ah 48v battery, which I fitted about 8 months ago, to a Boardman hybrid-type commuter. Riding under normal road conditions (ie 15mph on decent surfaces with little head wind) and assisting the motor to a fair degree, I can easily get over 100 miles of range between charges. And I'm recharging when I get down to between 2 and 3 bars, so plenty of juice still left. The trick is not to rely on the motor any more than you have to. Save it for the steeper hills. You'll stay fit that way as well. Happy e-biking! 😁💪
Your scott conversion looks exactly like my boardman comp conversion, even down to battery and mudguards. Only thing different is you have faster BBSHD and road tyres although even those look like city jets I 'm considering for road use. I thin you have sweet taste, nice bike :)
+eMax eBikes Thanks Emax Team, thought your work and end product was top class. I'll be posting a follow up video soon, 1000kms nearly done and still going strong...Might invest in a 2nd battery soon...
I wish you had kept the camera still when you showed us where the break sensor cable/magnet was clued to your break lever location. Couldn't quite see it.
I have been getting all information I can about BAFANGS motors and about the different batteries I can use before I order mine. Your video has been the best video I have seen so far. I think I don’t need to see any more videos after yours. Thank you. Nevertheless I have few questions. How many teeth has the new chainring? It looked to have less teeth. Is it made of aluminum or steel? I would like to get the smallest chainring that fits because I usually do extreme extended climbing and I don’t want to force the motor. I am not interested in speed. Only interested in climbing. Another question: Can you use a 52V battery with that very same motor? Thank you. I gave you a thumb up very well deserved and I subscribed too. I live in Southern California. This area is a paradise for mountain bikers. Thanks again.
The handle bars are a bit different to the bike that I had when I was a kid. The only brake I had was the one inside the rear hub and you peddled backwards to apply the brakes. The problem was is you were flying down a hill and hit a big bump the chain would come off and have zero brakes. You had to put the bike down as soon as, so that you didn't gain anymore speed. Only one high gear and 29 inch wheels. Things have changed a lot. I might have to try something like this before I get too old.
We used to see who could do the longest skids, but the tyres back then would still last for ages because they were so tough. You would just have flat spots everywhere though. We lived in hilly country and my mate had a fixed wheel with no brakes, just fight back on the pedals to slow down. We were tough back then.
Does pedaling with throttle only mode hurt the motor? seems like pedal assist is how theyre meant to be run? good video, thinking of this model in brisbane, I also like the idea of buying the programming cable instead of gear sensor, I had heard that delay may get annoying, I like the idea of using throttle separate to pedaling but I want to do big distance so wanting to pedal same time or is it better to start in throttle only mode get up to speed and switch to pedal assist? I think mid drive are so cool but seems the best way to wear a motor out quick having it double as the crank rather than separate like a hill topper or hub on front wheel
I'm also thinking of keeping it legal speed and getting a motorbike license, I think cops want to bust these bikes they are like riding a motorbike without registration like a free ride it would piss anyone off used to having accountability for accidents. I want to get 1000w model for when laws change and can up the speed and register it, I think if you hit someone at 70km you'll be in serious shit trying to explain it lol
Good video with all sensible comments and not carrying on with a lot of crap. What program do you need on a computer to muck around with the speed limiter? What else needs changing on the program other than the speed limitation? Does the replacement throttle just plug straight into the wiring harness or do you need to notify the wiring?
I've got the older bbs1 which i shattered the spindle 3 times, and got upgrade to 350w and dropped speed from 20 to 18mph and not used pedal assist so less strain and now just get pedaling and open throttle. Been looking at better motor to fit onto old Kona ht but stuck on Bbshd but not 1000 or Bose 03
Any experience of using that shark style of battery pack in the rain and just how waterproof it is or isn't? Although, I'm in one of the wetter parts of the UK and comparing the weather to down under is probably akin to comparing apples to oranges. Looking at converting a mountain bike [bottom bracket type and measurements nightmare] to BBSHD and in the process of deciding on things like a good donor bike and either a triangle battery pack and bag or a shark style one like yours. Very nice bike and one of the more detailed TH-cam videos on the subject. Thanks.
I have the 750 on my diamondback now I think I will get the 1000w and put the 750w on my wife's diamondback Lux. I put on some kwik seven 5's for the the street so much fun to ride. Love that set up. I found this sweet mount to get the light off the bars and centered mounts in the spacers. Minori made in japan.
52v Panasonic cells 20-40 miles not many hills here I use the throttle a lot. Around 20 miles throttle only mostly flat terrain. Then it depends on how much you peddle which PAS mode you use. Almost 500 miles on mine now still runs nice.
thanks for the quick reply, I just brought mine came in the post today. I am busy installing it and will probably use it ona 20AH 48v battery. I have been using wheel hub motors but this time decided to use these mid drive motors instead. I'll let you know how it is in a few weeks lol
Thanks for the video! About to order a Bafang mid motor and now doing research. My questions: What size & brand are your new skinny commuter tires? Are the brake sensors installed for both sides or just that one right side ? What glue did you use? The USB cable is to reprogram the controller (not the display), or the motor, or both? And what are some restrictions that should be changed w throttle only mode? Much appreciate!
I just bought and fitted the 750W BBS02.. It saves 250W power than the 1000W and still provides 160nm therefore will go further.. especially with 15Ah Battery.. I think the BBHD is overkill and best suited to the fat heavy bikes.. Fitted it to my Kinesis XC2 and very happy.. Top speed 47mph 😀
I have same kit and i put it on my Scott sub 20 I had to get a bling ring lekkie and its worth it , 42 tooth 135 dollars cad but it is a must. I would really like to get some shoxs like you have. I got a shift sencor and its good. I would just flick my lever and shift and that worked really good. Thanks for video 👍🇨🇦👍🍻🚲🚲
+Fresh Anything That's awesome - Hopefully you've had no issues with the first 1,000kms! I just took in my Norco today to get converted, asked for the Lekkie Bling Ring to be put on it from the get go since you've had a good experience with it! Got to ride a demo one at the shop and WOW- can't wait until I get mine next week and look forward to your update video too! Cheers and thanks /r
Hello and thanks for the great review of the Bafang BBSHD 1000w kit. I am planning to install the kit on my DiamondBack Apex MTB frame, I would like to ask where you purchased the speed controller on the left side of the handlebar as this sound like the better setup for me. Regards. Francisco.
Thanks for the great video. I was thinking about going with the 3000w cyclone but ended up with the BBSHD thanks to this video. Been a couple of months now and i love it. The only thing I would add to this video is to pay attention to the quality of the cells used in the battery pack. Don't go cheap! The battery makes a noticeable difference to the performance. When my current 48V 40A drain battery dies I will go for a 52V 40A battery. I really enjoy the peakiness of the freshly charged 48V battery which lasts about 5-10 mins. With a 52V battery I am hoping this 5-10 minutes will become 10-20 minutes.
Gavin Boyle By 40A you mean ofcorse amps? But what AH you have? I finally bought BBSHD and now I have to decide about the battery. What is better, 48v 17 ah or 52v 14 ah? Is 52v worth it if I get less AH for the same money?
I have a 48V 7.8AH currently. I commute 8km to work and the 7.8V battery does this distance easily. Using throttle only at full power I can do 12-15 Km. I am 95kg and encounter a few small hills. When the battery is fully charged for the first 5-10 mins the acceleration is noticeably quicker. If you do a google search of a discharge curve graph of a say a Samsung 25R li-ion cell you will see that the very top tip of the voltage curve drops off rather quickly. As the voltage drops from its peak so does the acceleration. The 52V battery keeps you in that higher voltage band longer than a 48V battery. 48V x 17Ah = 816 Wh 52V x 14Ah = 728 Wh. So choose the 52V and get an additional 5-10 minutes of peaky acceleration or choose the 48V and get an extra 12% capacity. Since I ride a short distance I would go for the 52V 14Ah. However if you need to travel more than 20kms you will need that extra 12% capacity.
G Henrickson His battery isn't 40 amp hour but only 7.8AH, read below. I have 52V 17.5AH and my bike with BBSHD goes about 55 km using just the throttle.
I see you went for the 52V. Awesome you are getting 55km. I am only getting about 45km tops. My crappy Samsung 26F celled 48V 15A battery is my limiting factor. I should have learnt/researched more before buying . I know now the BBSHD needs a battery that can easily deliver a constant 30A (when required) and that 48V is fine but 52V is better.
Nice. Thanks for the road test. Good thing those cars are on the other side of the road. A little unnerving to watch as an American. Mine is limited to 32 KMH but I would like to go a bit faster.
Even a relatively mild increase in speed will dramatically reduce your range. If you stick to 15mph or less, you can expect around 20-30 watt hours per mile depending on conditions. But it goes up dramatically from there. Once you are over 20mph the energy consumption goes almost straight up as you increase the speed. Not only do you have the normal exponential increase of energy with speed, but you get enormous wind resistance.
32 kmph is enough, that way you are safe, police wont annoy you and you have great mileage, going at 65kmph on bike designed to go at 20kmph is just disaster, so many things waiting to go wrong. Have you heard of physics formula that if you double your speed, force increases by a factor of 4, so going at 65kmph from 30kmph will means you need 4x as much power from battery/motor and upon impact injury will be 4x worse.
@@SSToor It's nice to be able to go that speed, although for long distance cruising it's not economical, and I recommend a decent helmet. I'm thinking of upgrading to a downhill MTB helmet (want a motorcycle helmet but with better visibility and a bit cooler and lighter for pedaling), currently got a green cycle helmet but want a bit more padding/protection. Biggest danger I found was drivers doing maneuvers in front of you, not expecting you at close to motorcycle speeds on a push bike.
Outstanding, excellent review. It's refreshing not to have a Uncle Bill Narrative. :) What would be your opinion/advice and any one else's for doing this conversion to my 20" Folding Paratrooper? What is your weight and that of the bike? Sorry if I missed if you stated it. Thank you.
Yes I felt that it rolled better on the road and therefore probably less drag on the motor, especially up hills. I have changed them back to nobby tyres at the moment though because its winter and I haven't been commuting to work on the bike. More trail time...
Great review, i want to install on bicycle with V brakes, i am a bit worries about the braking power, i already think it,s not good enough, i live in Wales and it rains a lot... i think with this much power it will be risky. I probably need to invest in disk brake bicycle and convert. Probably cyclo bicycle... thanks again for video, very informative
I recently converted my Bianchi hardtail MTB to a Bafang mid-drive 750watt motor. Now having ridden it for some 250klms, I'm thankful I didn't put this on a bike with rim or V-brakes...the added weight and momentum would have quickly overcome anything but hydraulic disk brakes 👍
Top video mate. Answered heaps of questions Ive been asking myself and seeking out on the net. I tow a trailer with gear in it and live on a mountain up to 600m. Im considering the 750 BBS02 ( i have the bling ring) with the extra accessories you are using, wipperman heavy duty chain and 11-32 rear gears, but wondering if the BBSHD is better suited. I purchased a 48v 25a battery. After a couple of months how are the chainring and freewheel cassette gears wearing? Cheers from Mt Dandenong ( no flat tracks or paths here) near Melbourne.
I have had this running for about 8 months now, I have changed out my cassette for a 11-34 only because it wasn't new when I had the conversion done so was worn a little at the top end. Changed the chain also at the same time. I have been super impressed with the way this bike can chew up big hills in the mountains and also can be used as a commuter. Very versatile and fun setup. Best part is a relatively low noise profile so doesn't look out of place on the road or trails...I think the BBS02 is a good setup too but for peace of mind of it not burning out and the extra power the BBSHD is the way to go!
I will be making many videos soon of riding... I am sourcing a decent Gopro setup shortly to create them because at those speeds you can't be holding a mobile phone!
@@tonielcock8891 I've found on mine that 7.5 to 8 metres of rollout will get the most performance out of the motor and 9 metres of rollout for both the motor and my legs at the same time. 52/12 on 26" x 1.5 wheels with a BBS02B. Unfortunately it rubs against the chain stay without spacing washers. Any of those lekkie cogs would have to be smaller so worth using them with an 11 tooth as your highest gear. You will still get pretty fast on the smaller cogs. The above is for maximum flat land speed with pedal + throttle.
@@TimpBizkit what do you mean 7 to 8 metres of travel? I have gone back down to the 44t from the 48t and would never go any more than 44t now. Got 37mph down hill and 32.8mph, happy with the performance
Imagine what its capable of. i have tge bbs02 for 2 weeks now. got 58 km/h on a straight so far by only changing wheel diametre. ordered the usb cable for prooer tuning now. ;-)
Be careful what you program it for. Bbs02 controller is pretty weak. 25 amps continuous even is asking a lot of you want to to last. BBSHD can do 30 amps continuous no problem.
When you installed it was it hard to line it up or did everything fit good? I just noticed this is an older video. So overall how do you like the bike free the upgrade?
Nice set up there. I would someone want something with more range on full throttle. In the USA here that would only be about 13 miles at least you were honest about it. Would like 30 miles range on full throttle. The speed is awesome. guessing top speed is 32-40mph. What would you have to do to get twice as much range.
You can get double by using pedal assist but of you want a lot more than I suggest carry a 2nd battery or buy a battery bag but then it becomes heavier, not portable like on the frame and Very expensive!
Got a question for you extremists: How well does this BBSHD product perform in wet weather i.e. Heavy rain? I'm talking about the electrical parts like buttons, throttle control, LCD, switches, connections etc. I understand that it has an IP46 rating on the motor. But will the switches short out and send you sailing under extreme wet weather conditions? I live in Florida and we get a lot of rain here. Anyone have any any experience with this? I'm mainly concerned about safety and reliability.
I have been caught in a couple of storms and had no problems just wiping the digital controller screen with my glove. It seems to hold up pretty well to rain and to me hosing down the bike. I Certainly wouldn't take the bike in a river though...
Have you ever needed to grease the HD motor and why does it not come unlock? Also do you need to program it on the computer to make the speed more efficient? Could you go through and explain how much speed the motor is giving you on the PAS and also when you change gears? Can you pls talk about maintenance when do you need to bring it into a bike store to service the motor? Is the accuracy of the speed not correct and is the same with the DCP 18 Display? How much do you ride? 5 days a week and no issues? And will you stress the motor if you keep putting it on full speed?
Hello 👍 ,, you can change the pin (motor) that enters the frame of the bottom bracket,!? Let me explain,. I took the 100mm but, Pultroppo with the dissosamento chain crown house we are not there. He strains too much arrived at the 9 speed, from 10-11 goes hard and eats the iron. Since I have a 148×12 mtb wagon. No more margin even with picnic crown that I recovered 5mm .. Nothing! It doesn't work. So I would like to try on my old 26 rockrider 5.2 mtb Che a
What if you hit a person at 60k and hurt them real bad , are they going to be covered some how with hospital bills ?same if you hit a car , what would happen or who is responsible for coverage? I ask because I'm going to be putting a bike together soon with a 60v battery hopping to reach speeds of 80kph. Thanks and very nice bike .
I've got a Felt " Flying Machine " cruiser style bike, it was great on flat ground but now we're living in hill country and 7 speeds isn't enough. Is there any kind of Bafang motor and battery combination that you would recommend for maximum range considering the bike is really heavy and I'm 235 pounds too.
Just upgraded this battery to a 30amp 52v, it's now a beast with this motor. Yesterday did 60kms in extreme Hill dirt terrain. No issues at all. Will eat up mountains. I still had 3 bars left on battery...you do need better tyres strong wall and thorn resistant tubes. I got a cpl of flats before I changed to the right setup...
Watching in 2018... good video, love this setup! Currently installing this kit on my '17 Cube Acid 2x 29er... what size of rims and tires do you have on there for commuting?
Hi, I just bought a new bike with the bbs-hd system installed and I get some motor vibration at high speeds under throttle. Do you get this with yours at all?
Sure do! It's just the sheer power of the motor vibrating the aluminium tubes. The bikes weren't originally designed to be used with motor. It's a bit like driving a manual car it vibrates at higher revs then smooths out once ur cruising again...
Though this might be the cause, I suspect it is resonance in the motor. It does happen at a certain rpm and load. Also regarding the clunking when shifting, I find a quick back pedal just before the shift gives me a few moments before the power comes back on. It works better than that shift sensor (I have those too). Btw my 750 doesnt have that vibration but my HD does.
Hi I’m looking to buy a 750w how is the battery, motor after 2 years use
Still great. During the last winter I didn’t ride it as much after putting 1000 miles on it. When I decided to ride it again it appeared the battery wasn’t charging up fully. So I rode it a couple of times and recharged it. The second charge was better. Finally the last charge was back to normal. It was stored at 50% charge over the winter. I recently acquired a retro Columbia bike. It’s a remake of a 50’s model remade in the 80’s. Ive actually neglected the eBike since getting this retro bike. Anyway, no issues with the conversion.😎
@@geoelectro Thanks! Sounds a nice bike, I have an orange 224 full suspension it’s going on. Do you recommend upgrading the caset as per the video?
@@comfortablynumb8832 No I didn't. I did replace the chain, new brake pads, and ebike rated tires. I just ride like a cruiser so not a lot of shifting etc.
@@geoelectro thanks
Thanks very much, about to do a follow up 1000km progress update review...stay tuned
Agreed.
Where is the update!?!?! Is 40mph with or without pedaling?
I will try and do an update video on this bike, been going strong for nearly 2 years now! That is without pedaling, to be honest anything above about 30kms/hr with peddling is a bit useless, its just too quick for your legs to keep up.
That sounds a little low. What is the range of gears on your rear cassette?
Thx m8 , you have convinced me to go for the mid drive instead of the Hub motor . !
Love it!
All that power and yet so quiet.🍻
Really neat conversion job, too.👏👏 Good cable management, from what I could tell.👍
I've just ordered the BBSO2, 750W kit.
Unjust laws need not be obeyed.
@@allywilkeforsenate And they are not being....🤭🤝
@@originalrecipe6113 are you uk if so we're did you get your motor thanks
@@niceboy761 I got all my materials from Ali Express and Amazon. It's the Bafang 48v 750w mid drive. I bought a 20ah battery with it as well, and it can go 30 miles if you go around 15mph with it on throttle, about 10 more miles if you do pedal assist
I own the bbs02. It's still very powerful for a bicycle. So amazing that I save almost half of the time on commuting. Also I find the speedometer is very accurate. It is only 1 or 2 off the gps.
Im thinking to get one for myself, could you tell me good Sir, how many miles can you roughly make on one battery charge.
An excellent review, all the information you want to know about this kind of setup concicely and clearly delivered, thanks.

So close to 1000 Subs... Nice vid mate!

I loved the way you did this video. i will be doing a video on my conversion and riding soon. thanks.
Thanks for watching, I hope to be making some more videos again soon. Have fun on your setup!
hey, how long is the battery life? ive heard that they dont last long.
brett3060 it's been great, 1 year on now.
Fresh Anything any advice for someone who's gonna do something similar? cheers
brett3060 make sure you change the chain wheel because the original one will rip your chain apart and is so heavy and jerky and makes the whole experience less enjoyable.
Thanks.. i never thought about turning the display around or putting the control on/off buttons on the right side.. Great idea
I didn't either but y
Also, not sure if it was mentioned. But always store liion or Lopo batteries at 3.8v per cell. Will increase the life of your batteries significantly! Never leave batteries fully charged for any longer then needed. (If you care about your battery I guess)
I use a Wemo remote PowerPoint.. if I know I need the bike in the morning, I set it to turn on charge at 2am.
Is there any review of your setup available? I got nuvinci (the first model) too and going to modify the bike an electric one.
herkko61 hey, didn't make a review, but used the biggest nuvinci sprocket I could find online...22 tooth on the back, and a 34 Raceface narrow/wide tooth on the Bafang.

+Fresh Anything Thnks for the tip! Will take a look into geared setup :)

Yes I remember the back pedal brakes, awesome for doing 20 metre skids down a hill as a kid.
We used to see who could do the longest skids, but the tyres back then would still last for ages because they were so tough. You would just have flat spots everywhere though. We lived in hilly country and my mate had a fixed wheel with no brakes, just fight back on the pedals to slow down. We were tough back then.
60 km/h and it seemed to have even more to give, just insane.
The more insane thing is that people will even go that speed on these kind of ebikes! Very unstable and bad range.
@@emish4282 bbs02 750w using 20AH battery does 20-25 miles pushing it hard going 30+mph. if i charge my battery everyday it costs about £2 per week 🙂
it is very helpful. I wasnt going to buy bafang because of there is no only-throtle mode. thank you.
The cable is about $20 and you only have to change 1 setting to get throttle only
Does pedaling with throttle only mode hurt the motor? seems like pedal assist is how theyre meant to be run? good video, thinking of this model in brisbane, I also like the idea of buying the programming cable instead of gear sensor, I had heard that delay may get annoying, I like the idea of using throttle separate to pedaling but I want to do big distance so wanting to pedal same time or is it better to start in throttle only mode get up to speed and switch to pedal assist? I think mid drive are so cool but seems the best way to wear a motor out quick having it double as the crank rather than separate like a hill topper or hub on front wheel
I'm also thinking of keeping it legal speed and getting a motorbike license, I think cops want to bust these bikes they are like riding a motorbike without registration like a free ride it would piss anyone off used to having accountability for accidents. I want to get 1000w model for when laws change and can up the speed and register it, I think if you hit someone at 70km you'll be in serious shit trying to explain it lol
I should add lastly though, I love the bike, so inspiring that mud guard is sick too.
Thanks.
you mentioned you upgraded the thumb throttle where did you get that? I need one for my build.... thanks :o)

I found this sweet mount to get the light off the bars and centered mounts in the spacers. Minori made in japan.
what's the range and what size battery are you using on your 750W?
52v Panasonic cells 20-40 miles not many hills here I use the throttle a lot. Around 20 miles throttle only mostly flat terrain. Then it depends on how much you peddle which PAS mode you use. Almost 500 miles on mine now still runs nice.
thanks for the quick reply, I just brought mine came in the post today. I am busy installing it and will probably use it ona 20AH 48v battery. I have been using wheel hub motors but this time decided to use these mid drive motors instead. I'll let you know how it is in a few weeks lol
Holy amp hours batman. I only have the 11.5ah battery. With the 20ah battery double it most likely.
Cool and very informative review! Thank you very much! Tell, please, what type of brake lever you got installed?
I just bought and fitted the 750W BBS02.. It saves 250W power than the 1000W and still provides 160nm therefore will go further.. especially with 15Ah Battery.. I think the BBHD is overkill and best suited to the fat heavy bikes.. Fitted it to my Kinesis XC2 and very happy.. Top speed 47mph 😀

Hello and thanks for the great review of the Bafang BBSHD 1000w kit.
I am planning to install the kit on my DiamondBack Apex MTB frame, I would like to ask where you purchased the speed controller on the left side of the handlebar as this sound like the better setup for me.

Great videi Will you please provide the make, model, and, if possible, where to purchase the improved throttle? Thanks,.
I know it's been a while, but do you remember where you ordered your thumb throttle. Great video by the way.
Nice bike man, would the PAS kick in also without speed sensor on the spoke?
A 40 amp hour battery? That is huge. Is that a rack mount battery pack? Wherever did you locate such a thing?
G Henrickson His battery isn't 40 amp hour but only 7.8AH, read below. I have 52V 17.5AH and my bike with BBSHD goes about 55 km using just the throttle.
I see you went for the 52V. Awesome you are getting 55km. I am only getting about 45km tops. My crappy Samsung 26F celled 48V 15A battery is my limiting factor. I should have learnt/researched more before buying . I know now the BBSHD needs a battery that can easily deliver a constant 30A (when required) and that 48V is fine but 52V is better.
Sweet ride
Where did you get that read fender? That is pretty sweet.
That's a great speed not too crazy but not too slow. Good job
nice video man, can you do a video on how you did the programing ?
Nice. Thanks for the road test. Good thing those cars are on the other side of the road. A little unnerving to watch as an American. Mine is limited to 32 KMH but I would like to go a bit faster.
just put the limiter higher or remove it. simply done. ;-)
@@SSToor Your a Prick 😈
What would be your opinion/advice and any one else's for doing this conversion to my 20" Folding Paratrooper? What is your weight and that of the bike? Sorry if I missed if you stated it. Thank you.

great video. can I ask what is the pedal resistance like if you get caught out with a flat battery.
It's fine actually, just like riding a normal bike but instead of it weighing 10kg it's about 20....great on the downhills haha
Very reasonable sound level. Not too loud at all.
Hello, I like the review. Question, by changing those tires to road tires did it help to go faster than your mtb tires?
Yes I felt that it rolled better on the road and therefore probably less drag on the motor, especially up hills. I have changed them back to nobby tyres at the moment though because its winter and I haven't been commuting to work on the bike. More trail time...
@@TwistTheThrottle2024 How much Ah is the battery and how many miles it runs for such powerful motor?
@@piyushtalegaonkar2940 For daily commute get a 750w! This one is just much more powerhungry and much less economical in terms of milage.
Amazing bike. It is very beautiful!
Max speed: 78 km/h! You MUST make a video when you ride the bike!
I will be making many videos soon of riding... I am sourcing a decent Gopro setup shortly to create them because at those speeds you can't be holding a mobile phone!
Don't you find that the smaller front chainring lowers top speed.
At the moment lm waiting for the 48t as I will see how I get on with that.
NIce video, any mechanical issues so far?
Harminder Singh No issues at all! Still going strong!
gilessmokey you must have got a bad one or poor install...mine hasn’t missed a beat in 2 years
Imagine what its capable of. i have tge bbs02 for 2 weeks now. got 58 km/h on a straight so far by only changing wheel diametre. ordered the usb cable for prooer tuning now. ;-)

Be careful what you program it for. Bbs02 controller is pretty weak. 25 amps continuous even is asking a lot of you want to to last.
BBSHD can do 30 amps continuous no problem.
Great video, I'm undecided weather to get this motor or the bbs02b. Guess its all down to cost and is it worth the extra almost £200?
Yes bbshd is better, its stronger and more perfected than 02
Read my comment. 750 so2 does 40mph. Two chainwheels a 44 and 52. Eight on back 11 tto 32.
Where did you get the rear mudguard from mate. Looks good
Great build. links to purchase sites? thanks.
Hey I’m new to building Ebike this will be my first I was wondering if you could make a video on how to setup mode 0
When you installed it was it hard to line it up or did everything fit good? I just noticed this is an older video. So overall how do you like the bike free the upgrade?
good explanatory vid!
Really useful video, thanks!
Great review, I am in New Zealand too, where is the best place to buy one?????
hey hi I'm also in new Zealand and I was just wondering did you end up getting one of these motors and if so where from. thanks
I am well pleased with mine - what make is that thumb throttle?
Thanks mate, great video, much appreciated
Nice set up there. I would someone want something with more range on full throttle. In the USA here that would only be about 13 miles at least you were honest about it. Would like 30 miles range on full throttle. The speed is awesome. guessing top speed is 32-40mph. What would you have to do to get twice as much range.
You can get double by using pedal assist but of you want a lot more than I suggest carry a 2nd battery or buy a battery bag but then it becomes heavier, not portable like on the frame and Very expensive!
hi, just curious if youve had any problems regarding the rear freewheel handling all that power?
No not yet...
So I would like to try on my old 26 rockrider 5.2 mtb

Thanks for talking about how the battery comes off. I'm building one on a Trek Marlin 7. I always wondered about the battery.
Awesome review, thanks a lot!
Great vid! Whats the max speed on flat ground whithout pedaling?
Probably about 65km/hr but depends on wind, smoothness of road, tyres, weight of rider etc...
Thx!!
Hey, great video! What is the range of the bike approximately?
Watching in 2018... good video, love this setup!
Currently installing this kit on my '17 Cube Acid 2x 29er... what size of rims and tires do you have on there for commuting?
I know im a bit late, but what was the throttle you used? And maybe the handlebars on the bike? Thanks
which thumb throttle did you upgrade to? great build!

Hello, what tooth ring was it, gave you had any issues over the years?
Thanks for the video. What is the name of the thumb throttle. I have the original on my bike and as you say, it's really jerky.
Hey FA- Just wondering how the bike is going since you've had it a while :) I've had my BBSHD for about 1000kms, no issues at all yet ;) :D
RickO'chet it's honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made! Life changer! So much fun and has made me ride even more than ever! Love it
I've heard that too - hopefully they're not too hard to replace.
