    This has helped me so much, my first plane took so long on trial and error. I kept putting my center of lift and center of mass to close (thought they should be equal). I also didn't account for fuel losses. Can't wait to build my advanced plane better with this knowledge

      Probably true somewhat in real life. A rocket is just going up, a plane has multiple parts so it can go up, down and turn. More moving parts means more complication and chance for failure. I think it’s fair to say a plane has a higher chance of failing than any astronaut has had in a rocket. It doesn’t mean no deaths, obviously there have been, but it’s far less.

    It might have been mentioned in a later video but since I didn't see it mentioned here I thought it worth... well, mentioning.
    When the center of lift is above the center of mass, the craft is more stable, and naturally when it's the opposite, it's less stable. That isn't necessarily bad, because less stable craft are easier to turn, but it's good to be aware whether you're favoring stability vs. maneuverability.

    I've seen alot of different Kerbal tutorials from different TH-camrs, and may I just say that yours is the best by far. A proper, genuine "tutorial", brilliantly presented.
    It had been frustrating me for ages that I couldn't build a plane that flies the way I wanted it to even though I thought I was doing everything I was watching these guys do. Straight away from watching your video, I've nailed it 👌 You've opened up a whole new world to a game that has frustrated me for years since it's release and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    I really hated building Planes... I just find it annoying if you have to make really long trips via airplane you need to use the physics warp and that's very often kind of messy from x2 acceleration and beyond.
    This guide really helps me figure out some things I like to try on my next build. I never payed much attention to the placement of the landing gear, for example. What you say makes total sense and anyone would have been able to come up with that - haveing someone point a finger at it just makes things sooo much easier. Also, I never split the controls between yaw-, roll- and pitch-controlling surfaces. I wonder how that's gonna make a difference?!? It will be fun to find out later tonight.
    Again: Thank you for the time you put into this. I hope for you that this channel blows up by quite a bit cause it really keeps up with Matt Lownes and Scott Manleys stuff.

    A couple things I'd like to add/clarify:
    For the first plane (the tech level shown in this video) balancing the CoM and CoL so closely is actually far from necessary. Just make sure the CoM (yellow icon) is forward of the CoL (blue icon) and you're good.
    In fact, I find it easier to have my elevators at the back in this design, as shown at about 12:00 - this makes the plane less agile, but more stable, which means easier to control. And since this is aimed at beginners, I think ease of control is more important than agility.
    It also makes the tweaking of the control surface deflection (show in the next video, if memory serves) almost completely unnecessary, which in turn means one less item on the checklist that could lead to catastrophic mission outcome...

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All fair points. A lot of it is personal taste. I don't like the feel of a very nose-heavy plane and so much prefer the CoL quite close to the CoM. I also rarely use the tail connector that I do here (I find it too long) preferring instead an empty Mk1 fuel tank or even the Hammer SRB so I can get into the high atmosphere, but I thought all of that would be too much for this video.

  • @the_omg3242
    @the_omg3242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great tutorial. One other factor you didn't mention on landing gear placement is making sure the main gear (rear) are pretty close to parallel. Depending on where you mount them, if their camber or caster is too far out of alignment, the plane will be unstable when rolling and if one side lifts first it will cause it to pull hard to one side and strike a wingtip. (which usually doesn't end well)
    There was a mod with gear that would automaticly align, but with stock you should spend time to get it as good as possible.

I can't believe how quickly hours pass while I'm playing, I'm loving it so far, getting ready for my first Mun Landing 😁. At least according to a twenty five year old Human-Computer interaction course, but it seem reasonable that you don't bother to learn a new way to do things if you already know one.

    Thank you so much for this, Scott Manley's video is outdated and wrong and extremely counterproductive.
    You just saved me most of the materials, resources, and science I wasted by following Scott's awful career mode tutorial.
    By the way, though, wtf is a "Materials Study?" I can't find any info about how to do a "Materials Study" in the game or online at all.
    Also, does anybody know how to move the camera side to side when building these? I can only seem to rotate, zoom, and move up/down. But no side-to-side movement is possible.
    EDIT: Figured out how to move the camera side-to-side. For anyone interested, it's just "middle-click + drag," super simple!

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Materials Study is the experiment that the SC-9001 Science Jr performs. The experiment is performed the same way as with other experiments, by right clicking on the part and selecting do a materials study. It's very much like the Mystery Goo in that it needs to be reset by a scientist in order to be run again.

    thanks for the vid I'm making a space shuttle but I can't get it to glide so this helps a lot also (ik I'm a year late) can the center of lift be above or under the center of lift or does it not matter

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can matter especially if your angle of attack is high, like with a space shuttle on re-entry. If the centre of mass is quite a bit higher than the center of lift and you're pitching up aggressively, you can reach a point where the CoM goes behind the vertical going up from the CoL. If that happens, there's a good chance the plane will become unstable.
      With shuttles on re-entry you want your mass as far forward as you can. During this phase your fuel tanks should be mostly empty. I like to move all the fuel to the most forward tanks. Sometimes I even have empty tanks for fuel or monoprop up forward just for this purpose. This will increase stability during re-entry.
      Once you start pitching down and going into glider mode, you can start moving some of the fuel back to improve handling.
      Good luck.

    Great intro to planes. I would have liked to hear how center of lift behaves when above or below the center of mass.

      I'm hoping to make a new plane tutorial soon. I'll try to remember to include that.

    These videos are amazingly helpful! I have just one request, would it be possible for you to put this series into their own playlist. It gets difficult trying to sort thorough all of the other videos to find the next one in order.

    Have you tried the Missions expansion? I was surprised that the first missions have no pilot or reaction wheels, making the first rockets the hardest to fly (relatively).

    Watching your videos... one thought came to mind... what about using that KOS script to have some pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight check lists... so that after design... you are not forced to remember a bunch of info... and can concentrate on piloting... just a thought.

      Honestly, that's kinda brilliant, especially for me who is always forgetting stuff. I do have a doc with a checklist that I never use. Something ingame could just be the trick.

    Followed your tutorial to a tee and at 14:30 I can't get the blue ball behind the yellow ball. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. There seems to be an edit in the video because at 14:28, the ailerons are behind and the at 14:31, they are in the front with you not showing how it was done. I've tried to "slide" it over but it only slides a few feet and stops. I have to delete it and re-add it but then the balls are not in the place where you show them. What am I missing?

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is definitely an edit, but I simply grabbed them and put them in their new spot. As you observed, the move tool can't move them that far. One possibility is that there is that a lifting surface has been duplicated but it is inside another part so you can't see it. Also, I've had the CoL indicator (the blue ball) get messed up. Try reloading the craft and see if that resolves it.

    It’s so frustrating how you have to make your planes look so odd because of KSP’s wonky physics model. I feel like you always have to put those canards on the front otherwise there’s no way to bring the lift forward, and you can’t put the wings forward enough to not need canards or you block cockpit entry.
    Other than that, thank you, this helped a ton!

    for me this didn't help, my plane keeps tilting to one direction and it is incredibly unstable, I followed every step of the tutorial and I don't know what I did wrong..
    edit: also when I try to take off the back cone thing keeps hitting the ground and destroying the plane
