Velomobile vs. Group of Road Cyclists | Cycling event Arvon kuntoajo, Kälviä, Finland

  • I went to this local cycling event, Arvon Kuntoajo, on 1.7.2017. This time I decided to go fast and maybe have some competition with other cyclists. But as it turns out, other cyclist were much more slower, so there was no competition. The fast group of road cyclist were definetly stronger riders than I am. And they were riding as a group, which makes them even faster. But still I was able to go much faster than they.

    Concerning uphills, I read an article recently about how to climb. In the past, my legs would go sour and I would have to back off (in glass fibre Quest). The article stated that the trick is to make sure you get an excess of air into your lungs, so what I do now is steer with one hand, try to relax my back and put one hand to the side, so I can breathe in deep and do "Trumpet-breathing" out (hard out, and use your belly to breathe too). The interesting thing is that now, my heart rate goes up a lot quicker and I can climb steadier and longer. Also, for me this is making about a 20-25% difference in speed. (from avg. 15,4 to 19,1 km/h on my reference hill). Compared to a friend with a normal bike, the weight of my bike is partially compensated by the fact that it's so much easier to deliver the power, and the fact that it's not possible to "open up" your chest on a fast racer with really low handle bars.

    I see that you had problems with getting onto the larges cog on your gears. Did you really needed the lowest gear? Or were you also on the middle chainwheel in the front at the time in this video?

    a fair competioin is only when the sport instruments are the same....thats why th UCI has banned recumbents bikes. .....a quest or any other bike with a fairing is very expensive so not everybody can use it.....in the 1930 some races are banned gear shifting, because not much people had the money for it. The UCI s Job is to garantie a fair competition between sport guys, so the best athlet will win and not the athlet with the best material.

    • @zivkovicable
      @zivkovicable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but I don't think the purpose of this video was to find the best athlete. Saukki was clear that at least the best of the road cyclists were stronger than he was. This was a test of which mode is more efficient.

  • @craigfirman1809

    43kph is a high average speed over the distance. In your opinion how fit are you? I’m considering buying one but I’m not sure if it’s worth the extra cost

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I consider myself as an average rider. You are not going to get that kind of average speed on your commute. For example my avg speed on my commute is sonewhere around 35 km/h. But the speed is not the only advantage of velomobiles. Velomobiles are also more comfortable than upright bikes and you get great weather protection. For example the drivetrain is protected from mud and water. That’s huge advantage during rainy days.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tällä ajaessa ei tosiaan tule samanlaisia kiputiloja, kuin pystypyörällä ajaessa. Mutta pitkällä aikavälillä saattaa perse hieman puutua. Samoin kun esim autolla pitkää matkaa ajaessa. Tai ihan missä tahansa samassa asennossa pitkän aikaa istuessa. Siihen auttaa pieni jaloittelu, koska nojapyörässä ei oikein voi vaihtaa asentoa. Mutta tosiaan pystypyörästä tuttuja perse-, niska-, hartia-, selkä- ja rannekipuja ei tule.

  • @enrico93
    @enrico93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi very interesting video I subscribed, from your videos seems that is really hard to manage the velomobile to face steeper uphills so can you tell me with what crankset is equipped you model? I suggest they would have to put 3 crown gears like mountain bikes so you can use very low gears so that you can go trough the steeper uphills at decent speeds

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep my crankset has 3 chainrings. The largest one is 57t, but I don't remember the other two. Maybe 44t and 34t or something.

    • @enrico93
      @enrico93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheVelomobileChannel pretty interesting, 57t chairing is pretty massive and with also the aredinamic shape of velomobile I would be not surprised if the top speed on flat surface should be around 100 km/h, on the other hand 34t for the smaller crown gear is the same gear with many road bicycles are equipped so I suggest the velomobile needs a smaller one to perform well in uphills

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, but the rear wheel is 26” so that means, the 57t ring isn’t so massive after all. Actually after about 65 - 70 km/h the cadence will be just too much to hold that speed very long.

  • @ztech6596
    @ztech6596 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is it OK to post velomobile rides on strava and destroy all the upright cycling KOMs? Technically you could say that riding a velomobile is "cycling" and therefore should be allowed on Strava...

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it ok to take a triathlon bike and wait for the best possible wind conditions (strong tail wind) and then crush the Strava KOMs? Which is more cheating? Strava is not an official UCI competition. In my opinion all human powered efforts should be allowed in Strava.

    • @ztech6596
      @ztech6596 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can imagine a lot of cyclists won't be happy with this and will flag your segments. At the same time, many of the more popular flat highway segments here in Latvia are won by drafters behind trucks at 80 - 90 kph. And they often don't even get flagged - it's become almost a norm, even though it is NOT human powered riding.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
